CIDCO MD Sanjay Bhatia gives a wonderful presentation of proposed Marina at CBD Belapur
The foundation stone for country’s second marina is likely to take place on January 26. Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre, Cidco managing director Sanjay Bhatia and chief engineer of Maritime Board visited the site in Belapur to take stock of the affairs. The project will have food plaza, amphitheatre, RO-RO services, skating ring and speed boat for passenger service. Bhatia gave a 3D presentation of the proposed marina at Belapur on Thursday. The City and Industrial Development Corporation Development (Cidco), in association with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra Maritime Board, is developing marina along the coastlines in Belapur. A marina is a specially designed harbour with moorings for pleasure yachts and small boats. At present, India has only one marina in Kochi, Kerala. The move is aimed at attracting more tourists to the satellite city, which has been gifted with long stretches of coastlines. If marina is developed, Navi Mumbai will come on the global map offering sea-based adventures. As per the plan, a recreation centre will also be developed along the marina for visitors. Bhatia said, “All the works will be done as per Coastal Regulation Zone norms.” The country’s lone operational marina is at Kochi, but there has been little movement in this direction up the western coast so far. The Kochi International Marina was developed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, which started operations in April 2010. In the past attempts had been made to have a marina in Mumbai and western coastlines, but there was no development. If the current plan goes well, Navi Mumbai will get country’s second marina. This will also create more job opportunity. A marina not only provides a sheltered environment for parking yachts and boats, but also offers allied activities such as maintenance, spare parts, accessories, house-keeping and fuelling, with options fo recreational activities as well as restaurants.
