However, the original recording was over an hour long. In this special bonus episode we present some of the scenes that didn't make it to the final cut. This IS NOT the usual slips of the tongues, stuttering, or any of the garbage outtakes and bloopers from your favorite televisions shows and movies. Nostalgic Game Remakes & HD Game Remasters | CCS Podcast AFTER HOURS #5

31:54
LaughingMan, CineMax and The Fuboo discuss the merit of nostalgic game remakes (e.g., DuckTales Remastered, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, Double Dragon Neon) and speculate whether such high-definition remasters can be considered a way of preserving classic games that would otherwise be inaccessible (e.g., The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition), or if they're blatant cash grabs from companies that lack imagination. And of those remakes, why are some successful and not others? Why are some video game remakes panned for outdated gameplay while some are praised for remaining close to the original? It's a hypocritical quandary -especially when compared to the movie industry- that was one of our toughest debates. Yellow Gaming Journalism & Professional Victimhood: #MESSIAH | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast

16:55
Yellow Gaming Journalism: Professional Victimhood & #MESSIAH | CCS Video Podcast To paraphrase Michael Corleone: "Just when we thought we were out, they pull us back in!" B-Mask cites a recent debacle between himself and ex-game journalist, Matt Lees, in which Lees goes on a diatribe in his own podcast, condemning the use of female sexual attributes (exposed breasts and female fantasy armor) to sell mini games on the Apple App Store. B-Mask suggests that the issue isn't as black and white as most news outlets and journalists would like the public to believe, cites cultural differences and traditional marketing tactics (sex sells), and states that it's a topic worthy of having a rational discussion or debate in order to find out whether there's any real link between video games and real-world misogyny, and if so, formulate a genuine solution. Matt Lees' indignant reply consisted of essentially trying to shut him up by stating: "this is one topic that [Matt Lees is] entirely unwilling to debate" "opening the floor to 'fair debate' gives [the opposition's] wonky ideas an air of credibility that they simply don't deserve." "[the opposition] can quite simply fuck off, as far as [Matt Lees is] concerned". In addition, Matt Lees drops the biggest bomb with the claim that no one in the gaming industry is paid to have opinions that are different than his own, which not only reeks of a totalitarian and self-righteous mindset, but it's also telling of how first-world problems, professional victimhood and yellow gaming journalism have amalgamated into a massive source of revenue. It seems like everywhere you turn video game developers, game designers, and game reviewers are flocking to questionable political ideologies like moths to flame while completely dismissing or outright ignoring any voices that question the potentially skewed world-view that these game industry insiders seek to perpetuate. Soap-boxing insiders like Adam Orth make a career of publicly denouncing the 'toxicity' of the gaming community, after being fired from Microsoft for actively trolling the Xbox One consumer base. Industry insiders like Halo designer David Ellis call out the questionable attire of other video game developers' female leads, and in the same breath over-generalize gamers as 'man babies', all the while featuring the sensual, digital naked woman (Cortana) as one of the main characters of his company's flagship franchise. Reviewers like Jim Sterling take short-sighted, under-researched, yellow journalism headlines and proceed to look down from their podiums and condemn the very people who listen to their shows as being 'toxic' or 'immoral'. Suey Park takes a Colbert Report joke entirely out of context and begins a knee-jerk campaign which, ironically, battles hate and bigotry with more hate and bigotry. And what conversation about professional victimhood would be complete without Anita Sarkeesian, whose feminist gaming videos, funded by a $160,000 Kickstarter campaign, have been met with scrutiny by legions of unsung YouTube watchdogs who actually bothered to fact-check the information that she suggests perpetuates misogyny in the video game industry. Meanwhile, the concept that video games have a direct influence on a gamer's real-world social behavior has been scientifically debunked in past video game political controversies, such as Jack Thompson's war on video game violence. And yet, gamers united against Jack Thompson's crusade against violence in video games in the early 2000's, so then why are main stream video game journalists so willing to side with Anita Sarkeesian's (often debunked) claims that video games promote misogyny and perpetuate 'the patriarchy'? When will the madness and the blatant hypocrisy end? Because it's a topic that video game journalists simply don't want to publicly investigate -for fear of being labeled as 'sexists', or they have a case of classic 'nice guy' syndrome- we had no choice but to jump on our own high horses, and return to the table to air our grievances and plead to the masses that some open discussion of these hotly contested topics take place. Movie Ratings are Bullshit + the Bechdel Test Nonsense! | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast

17:54
Movie Ratings are Bullshit! - MPAA, BBFC and the Bechdel Test | CCS Video Podcast All systems go! After considering a more lucrative hobby as male strippers in Las Vegas, the CCS Video Podcast gang is back in full form. The MPAA and BBFC movie ratings systems are a touchy topic that B-Mask, CineMax, Kenny and LaughingMan have been eagerly anticipating. The Cheshire Cat Studios gang is no stranger to the controversy surrounding the complete lack of consistency by the US and UK film ratings boards, but what of the secrecy surrounding the very guidelines that the MPAA is sworn to uphold? And what of the political factors and corporate interests that lie at the very heart of the matter? Does the MPAA and BBFC truly uphold high moral standards to provide parents with the tools necessary to shield their children from sex, violence, language and drugs, or does the all-mighty dollar truly have the last word? And what of the disastrous effects that the dreaded NC-17 rating -disproportionately applied to sex and nudity over scenes depicting wanton violence- can have on independent film makers? B-Mask, CineMax, Kenny and LaughingMan explore the controversies and hypocrisies of the MPAA and the BBFC, and mercilessly eviscerate the advent of the latest movie rating tool championed by pro-feminist social justice warriors: The Bechdel Test. But the question remains: Is there a perfect ratings system that parents can use to determine if a film's content is suitable for their children, does the MPAA and BBFC do an adequate job of providing consistent ratings, or should art be adherent unto itself and nothing else? Give us your feedback! The original recording lasted for just under a full hour, and much of our favorite points, examples and material had to be trimmed out for the sake of a timely release. However, the extra information shouldn't be lost to the cutting room floor, so be sure to tell us in the comment section below if you'd like to hear the full 1 hour long 'Movie Ratings are Bullshit' audio debate! Five Nights at Freddy's: "Scariest Game of All Time"? | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast

19:09
Five Nights at Freddy's: "Scariest Game of All Time"? Not Really... | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Outlast, Slender, Among the Sleep, Alien: Isolation — horror is in vogue among gamers. While it's true that we've seen some great original horror titles in the past couple of years, there's a slew of lesser-known horror titles that, while trading the subtlety and slow-burn that haunts you for days after completion in favor of a fast jump scare, are still popular enough to gain the public's attention and inspire imitators. Most of them are made by indie developers and modders on a shoestring budget, and they usually don't receive all that much coverage from the mainstream gaming press. So, how do they manage to gain internet infamy? And more importantly, why do more and more people aspire to make these games? The answer might surprise you: YouTube Let's Plays. Indeed, Let's Plays of video games are among some of the most popular content on YouTube. And Let's Plays of horror video games are exceptionally popular with the YouTube Let's Play community. (The more jump scares the better!) As such, we couldn't help but notice that there's a certain quid pro quo scheme going on between indie horror game developers and various 'Internet celebrities' like PewDiePie or Markiplier: • The indie game developers keep churning out these quick, disposable jump scare games; • And in return, the YouTube Let's Players milk them for all their worth — making countless 'scared' play-throughs, and thus effectively turning these games into smashing hits with their followers. Case in point: Five Nights at Freddy's, a game that has taken the internet by storm. And while normally we wouldn't care what people enjoy playing, after seeing the amount of praise and a quasi-religious following that this game has (with some even going as far as branding it as "The Scariest Game Ever!"), the CCS Gang couldn't help but raise their collective eyebrow and ask: "What's so scary about this game?" Additionally, our horror game veterans are left scratching their heads as to what exactly makes Five Nights at Freddy's worthy of the title of "scariest horror game". With the acclaim of Five Nights at Freddy's being "the scariest game ever" by the YouTube community, we pause to examine whether its success is warranted. On the one hand, Five Nights at Freddy's weaves a creepy narrative with disturbing imagery. On the other hand it's almost built to exploit a rising indie-game/YouTuber symbiosis. Because nothing earns more YouTube subscribers than a cheap "Schadenfreude money-shot" jump scare. We also develop our own "ideal horror game" list of requirements, and analyze where exactly Five Nights at Freddy's succeeds and where it falls short. Finally, LaughingMan outlines his own ideal survival horror game, much to everyone's discomfort. Like our stuff? The Creepiest Legend of Zelda Fan in the World!

05:02
"Zelda" | "Legend of Zelda" | "Zelda Fan" | "Creepy Fan" | "Zelda Fanboy" | "Scarry Zelda" | "Top Zelda" Website: http://cheshirecatstudios.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/cheshirecatstudio Twitter: http://twitter.com/cheshirecatstud We at "Cheshire Cat Studios" have decided to pull a George Lucas and re-release some of the most memorable bits from our earlier episodes for you to enjoy. We couldn't help but feel like our good friend (if you could call him that) the "Dark Master" got burried under a ton of other personal life stories in the original "Fanboy Idiocy" recording, so to show our imperishable love for that lonely loathsome creep we've dedicated a stand alone video to B-Mask's fateful encounter with the Dark Master — possibly the "creepiest Legend of Zelda fan" in the world. B-Mask: I would say that there is a line, and this is where I should probably bring up the Legend of Zelda incident. I think there is a line where you have to say- CineMax: Hmm hmm hmm! B-Mask: -that they may be enjoying it a little too much. And with CineMax's help I shall reinact exactly what happened. CineMax: oh yes, we shall. B-Mask: I had an incident recently when I've been working on the Legend of Zelda Documentary (skyward sword the history of zelda on youtube dot com slash crashorts of evil okay thanks bye). Kenny Farino: Pluggy plug plug B-mask: Oh please I don't even know the meaning of the word LaughingMan: Unless it has a BUTT in the prefix Group Laughter. B-mask: Yeah, exactly. But I had an incident where I was trying to promote my Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword history of zelda documentary and a lot of people on the Zelda dungeons forum were saying to me there was this other guy making a documentary named the Dark Master. You should talk to him and you should come to some sort of agreement and he's doing all kinds of work and filming the games himself and he's a really great guy and he's Jesus, he's our Lord and Savior. He's the best guy ever. And I was like Okay I'll check this guy out and I'll talk to him. So I bring him up on Skype and he's already a little bit weird to me. His sentences are very clipped, he types in things that are like "hey thanks man" and "that's cool". No grammar, and no commas or anything and, I dunno, I find that creepy sometimes. So I finally get into a Skype chat with him and the voice I am greeted with is Dark Master: (creepy guttural voice) Hrmm... uhh.... Hello? How you doing there?... LaughingMan: He sounds like that strong bad guy, Senor Cardgage. B-mask: You sound, you sound 'different' and he says "I'm making a Legend of Zelda documentary... errr... like you are." And I was like, Okay this guy sounds like the creepy pedophile from down the road, who I've named Uatu (an obscure Marvel Reference there). This guy was terrifying. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt and said "So what's your documentary going to be about?" Dark Master: It's going to be about me, I'm going to be this Dark Master, and ehh.... Ooh! I'm going to have this assistant and I'm going to call him Shit Face, and I hate him and I kick him... It's going to be really funny, you know? B-mask: And I'm like "Okay... yeah... alright... no, I'm not scared. Why do you think I'm scared?" And he's continuing and he says, Dark Master: I really like the Legend of Zelda CD-i games. Uhhh... You know... In my opinion they're the best in the series. And in this documentary of mine, my characters going to talk about the other games too but what he really wants is for the Legend of Zelda CD-i games to become loved by everybody. B-Mask: And I have this image in my head of everyone standing around and worshipping "Link mah boi!" and it's just not good for anyone's health. So I say "Okay, this... this could work... you might want to change it a little... you might want to open it up to another audience..." Dark Master: You think it could work? B-mask: "Yeah yeah, I think it could work if you make it available to other people to enjoy..." And then, out of the blue. Out of the fucking blue, he says to me: Dark Master: So, uhh... personally I think that a Zelda game would be really good if, uhh... you know, uhh... ZELDA GETS AIDS! LaughingMan: What the fuck?! Group laughter Dark Master: Yeah, Zelda gets them from Gannon. Gannon gave Zelda her AIDS, and then Link has to go and take away Zelda's AIDS. And save the entire entire kingdom and I think it would make for a really tragic story. Heartwarming you could even say... Kenny Farino: It's part of Gannon's evil master plan: Destroy Hyrule with AIDS! Everyone gives Ken a weird look. Kenny Farino: ... Sorry... B-mask: And so my response was "Hey my mom is calling and I have to go eat dinner, maybe you and I can talk again sometime around two-thousand-never?". And he's like

All Your Questions Answered - CCS Q&A Video

Ultimate Deadpool: The Ideal Merc With a Mouth?

16:58
The Cheshire Cat Studios crew share their dissatisfaction with the two most recent adaptations of everyone's favorite "Merc With the Mouth" ("Deadpool: The Video Game" & "Ultimate Spider-Man") in an attempt to raise awareness of how "Marvel" is doing its hardest to transmute a loveable, fourth-wall breaking underdog into a boisterous, Internet meme-spouting cartoon character in an attempt to appeal to the ADHD crowd. We begin by dissecting "Deadpool: The Video Game" and how it has proven that Deadpool should never be the centerpiece of the story he's in and then proceed to extrapolate what elements make the character so appealing, share our favorite Deadpool moments, and specify what steps need to be taken to create an 'ideal' Deadpool movie — which, after the overwhelmingly negative reception of "Deadpool: The Video Game", we may never get to see, for better worse. The Legend of Korra Analysis: Elemental Errors? | Beyond Pictures

10:13
The Legend of Korra series finished late last year, but new seasons have already been planned well in advance. Some feel that the series so far doesn't, perhaps, hold up to its predecessor - Avatar: The Last Airbender. B-Mask takes a look at why that might be the case. Website: http://cheshirecatstudios.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/cheshirecatstudio Twitter: http://twitter.com/cheshirecatstud Tumblr: http://cheshirecatstudios.tumblr.com/ InvertedMind's DA Page: http://invertedmind-inc.deviantart.com Transcript: Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko are incredibly inspirational people, having through their work ignited my own interest in the power of animated television. I hold them in the highest regard, and would love it if they saw this video. Having said that, I'm now going to burn all these budding bridges by talking about why The Legend of Korra sucks. Nah, I'm not hatin'. Well, to be pedantic I don't really set out to hate on anything, though many find my critiques blasphemous. I'm incredibly fond of the Avatar franchise and The Legend of Korra is no exception. I love the world, the style, the music, the ideas, and the characters- not to mention that Janet Varney is absolutely adorable. I LOVE YOU. Which is why it pains me to have anything bad to say at all. I still maintain that the first few episodes of The Legend of Korra are perfection and the original series, Avatar the Last Airbender, is my overall favourite animated show. Sadly, it's clear that the latest incarnation is somewhat lacking. I worry that the creators of The Legend of Korra believe all the critics are variations on the eternal fanboy and have thereby disregarded many arguments. I like to think that I could offer more eloquence to some of these points of contention- i mean not to blow my own trumpet but...actually, eh, fuck it. With The Legend of Korra Book 3 on its way I'm keen to address this series while it's still fresh in my mind- and while I will be looking at what doesn't work, I will also give credit where credit is due. Avatar is set in a world where people are born with the ability to bend the elements- coming in flavours of earth, air, water, fire, and absolutely normal. The Avatar is a reincarnated deity who has the ability to control all of these elements, and therefore can bring balance to the world when things get a bit rowdy. The Avatar is also able to act as the bridge between the spirit world and the mortal realm. In the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, the overarching plot was set right from the get-go- Aang had to learn his skills and bring balance to the world by stopping the fire nation. This became the forward momentum for everything that followed, allowing the focus to fall on character development and evolving perspectives on the entirety of the situations context. Exposition felt progressional, not retractive. The Legend of Korra does have an overall agenda but also ekes out plot details bit by bit purely for exposition, and the goalposts shift almost every episode come the second season. Now on the one hand this does work if the plan is to really pull the rug out from people's feet and create a sense of mystery, but the surprises and twists offered are often incredibly superficial, offering little sense of weight or insight. Our characters are active in pursuing a goal but aren't very good at questioning anything in same way as their predecessors.

Paranoid Social Justice Warriors | Dangerous Personalities

14:21
Nat and LaughingMan have been reading FBI Profiler Joe Navarro's book "Dangerous Personalities". However, it was the chapter on the Paranoid personalities that turned out to be both surprisingly familiar and doubly alarming... For the past few months there have been several juicy stories that we could have tackled: Hollywood Sex Abuse Scandals, the lackluster Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi, Net Neutrality, and so on. But nothing just seemed to really 'spark' a discourse. In the meantime, Nat and Laughingman have been reading quite a few books, and one happened to be FBI Profiler Joe Navarro's book "Dangerous Personalities". The book covers four dangerous personalities exhibited by some of modern history's most notorious figures, but the chapter on Paranoid personalities sounded horrifically familiar. In addition, more and more ex technology pioneers have been warning the public in regards to the dangerous effect that technology is having on society as a whole. Former Facebook executive, Chamath Palihapitiya, has expressed regret for building tools that 'destroy the social fabric of how society works'. And given the divisive nature of Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and even YouTube, it's no surprise. However, LaughingMan has a loose theory that perhaps the nature of social media and the Internet is an incubator for paranoia and narcissism. In an age where everyone believes that they are reality tv stars, and publicly air far too much as short sound-bytes, perhaps we are all living in a panopticon where we, the prisoners, are always under the watchful eyes of the court of public opinions. Coupled with the fear-mongering, click-bait media creating far more divisive and outrageous articles to pad their bottom lines, perhaps it is fostering an 'ad populum' online environment, prompting those to virtue signal out of fear of being judged in the court of (supposed) public opinion. SJW groups like Antifa believe that fascists and Nazis are everywhere outside of their circles, and they use violent tactics to suppress opposing speech as a means to justify their ends... SJWs and violent groups like Antifa are just as Joe Navarro describes the Paranoid Personality: They are habitual wound collectors; they cannot be reasoned with even with hard evidence; they believe that violence and cruelty will achieve their desired outcomes; they will dehumanize opposition and start witch-hunts; anyone who doesn't agree with them is an enemy. And in the case of porn star August Ames, the results of these witch-hunts can be nothing short of tragic. — — — Like our stuff? The Amazing Spider-Man 2: What's Wrong With the Spider-Man Film Franchise | Beyond Pictures

16:09
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Movie Analysis - #Thwip! | Beyond Pictures B-Mask's Twitter: https://twitter.com/B_Mask_ Spider-Man is one of the world's most endearing comic book characters — and perhaps the most mocked superhero movie franchises. From the Sam Raimi trilogy to Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man films, and from Tobey Maguire to Andrew Garfield, B-Mask looks into not why the new movie sucks, but also why the Spider-Man movie franchise just isn't that captivating. B-Mask, a long-time fan of the famous wallcrawler, takes a critical look not just at Marc Webb's latest The Amazing Spider-Man 2 film, but rather the entire Spider-Man movie franchise as a whole. From the misuse of Spider-Man's love interests and his supporting cast, to the questionable interpretation of some of his most iconic villains, to the outrageous misrepresentation of some of the most pivotal themes and messages of the source material — B-Mask addresses the numerous issues that have plagued the Spider-Man film series for more than a decade now. All of which, unfortunately, have been often overlooked due to the general audience's desire to see Marvel's webhead on the big screen. At any cost. P.S. Don't worry Dan Slott. You're safe. Bioshock Infinite Analysis: Piecing the Critical Puzzle

06:53
Irrational and 2K Games' latest hit, BioShock Infinite has been met with a hell of a mixed response. From those claiming it's the greatest FPS since... well, the original Bioshock, to those claiming that Elizabeth is pure Waifu material. B-Mask of Cheshire Cat Studios takes all of these stances into account and analyses what we can glean from this — and exactly how much Ken Levine's new attempt at philosophical debate with guns holds up to scrutiny. Notch vs Zoe Quinn: The Last Night and GamerGate

15:49
So yeah, this is a thing. Again. During the 2017 E3 Microsoft Xbox conference, the game "The Last Night" was announced. What followed next was a witch-hunt against one of the game's creators, Tim Soret, for his past #GamerGate comments. Despite the egalitarian nature of his comments, the focus of GamerGate's ire, game developer Zoe Quinn, made sure that Tim's past "transgressions" were brought to light. (All remarkably around the same time as her book deal, as well...) What this shows is that no one is safe from a journalistic stranglehold on independent thought in the gaming industry. Not only was Tim Soret forced to bend-the-knee and apologize for his personal views (egalitarian views, no less), it just highlights that faces in the game industry (and even members of the YouTube community) can be branded as 'heretics' if they don't step in line with the feminist ideological mafia. However, the financially independent creator of Minecraft, Markus "Notch" Persson, isn't being pushed around so easily. In fact, he's not only pushing back against the public bullying and shame-tactics, he's hitting harder. And there's very little the cry-bully fascists can do to stop him. — — — Like our stuff? The Red Pill Documentary | Down the Rabbit Hole

24:24
We've been asked for our opinions of the Cassie Jaye documentary, "The Red Pill". Given our often grim view of modern 'victimhood' feminism, as well as the events of GamerGate and the The Last Night controversy, we were more than happy to watch the film. Nat and LaughingMan are joined by Wade (aka: AggresiveDuck, yes with one 's'), and what we watched was nothing short of upsetting, but not the least bit surprising. Having seen male friends and male family members victims of domestic abuse, LaughingMan knows well the legal and social uphill battles that battered husbands often face. Oh, and the conversation naturally leads to the VidCon fiasco where the infamous Anita Sarkeesian called Internet skeptic Sargon of Akkad a "Garbage Human"... Because why not. Well actually, it's entirely relevant: The outright dismissive attitudes during Anita Sarkeesian's panel's QA session is indicative of the problem that many in the feminist movement simply aren't willing to have their ideology challenged. — — — Like our stuff? We frequently lambast Hollywood's complete lack of imagination, their stubbornness to take chances with new ideas, their sheer laziness by pandering to the lowest common denominator (i.e., Michael Bay, James Cameron et al), and rehashing old ideas for a quick profit. Sequelitis and movie reboots are nothing new, but the sheer amount of them in this day and age is nothing short of obscene and insulting to the people who they're meant to entertain. However, are they the industry's attempt to squeeze blood from a rock, or are they simply providing a service for people who clamor for new stories with their favorite fictional characters and facelifts to their favorite franchises? Join B-Mask, LaughingMan, and CineMax as they share their frustrations with Hollywood's outrageous lack of imagination (or shame), challenge some of the more questionable IP's the studios have decided to revive, and, most important of all, promulgate the real reason behind the sudden inrush of reboots. Why PewDiePie Should've Quit YouTube FOR REAL! | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast

PewDiePie Deletes His YouTube Channel? HUGE MISTAKE! | Why PewDiePie Should've Quit YouTube For Real | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast Recently PewDiePie has made the announcement that when his YouTube channel reaches 50M subscribers, he is going to close it down. The reasons being the latest round of complaints by YouTube creators involving 1) YouTube viewers being unsubscribed from their favorite channels without their knowledge; and 2) subscribed content being drowned out by either recommended videos, recommended videos with deep pockets, clickbait videos with large view counts, or older, more popular videos by a channel a viewer is already subscribed to. After watching his video, here is our somewhat controversial argument. Personally, we don't think that PewDiePie will follow through with this threat if the comment box controversy is anything to go by. However, love him or hate him, we as YouTube creators NEED PewDiePie to NOT delete his channel. Because better or worse, he is one of the top YouTube channels that represents the YouTube creator community. — — — Like our stuff? The Oscars: The Academy Award For Best Exercise In Pointless Vanity

33:23
It's that time of year again, boys and girls, because the Oscars are upon us! Which movie will the Academy select as 2014's Best Picture despite being an incredibly safe, boring choice? Which actor or actress will take home the Best Actor/Best Actress Academy Award, and which ones will be snubbed for another year? [Spoilers: Hollywood darling Sandra Bullock, and Leonardo DeCaprio, respectively]. Perhaps this year we will finally learn the answer to the biggest question of all: why do people still care about this irrelevant, self-congratulatory ceremony where a bunch of out-of-touch Hollywood celebrities declare which movies are the best? This last question is especially tricky considering that cinema as an art form gets most of its appeal from what people subjectively like or dislike about a particular film. Kenny and B-Mask explore these questions and more as they discuss the Academy Awards as an institution, why it may be losing touch with what people expect from movies, and why, at the end of the day, the Oscars are simply losing relevancy. The Legacy of Silent Hill: The Past, the Present, and the Future | CCS After Hours Podcast

41:55
In this After Hours episode, The Fuboo is joined by CCS’s newest recruit, Katie B, to talk about one of survival horror’s biggest titles: the Silent Hill series. They discuss why Kojima’s P.T. (or “Silent Hills”) game seemed promising, and then take a look back into the history of the Silent Hill series as a whole. As hardcore Silent Hill fans, Fuboo and Katie believe that only the first 4 titles should be considered ‘true’ Silent Hill games, and they examine the essential components needed to make a game really fit the ‘Silent Hill’ label. They also discuss the often misunderstood importance of the mysterious cult that operates in the town, and why a focus on the occult is crucial to making a Silent Hill game work. After all, many people are confused about what the powers of the town actually do. The backstory of Silent Hill is basically about a spiritual power that becomes tainted by the horrible practices of the cult. Before the cult arrived, the area around Toluca Lake was inhabited by Native Americans, who worshiped the spiritual power as a god. It was Alessa’s 7 year long torment under Dahlia’s spell that turned the spiritual power into something nasty. The underlying cause of every game is the spiritual power and the way it influences the psyches of the characters. Silent Hill is not a ‘mystical judge’ who seeks to torment those who have done wrong until they confess to their sins, as many have been lead to believe. This was only the plot of Silent Hill 2, but Fuboo and Katie speculate about why it was this particular plot that stuck with everyone, rather than the events of the other 3 games. The idea that only the first 4 games are ‘real’ Silent Hill games is a topic of hot debate among fans. Do you agree with the ladies of CCS? Or do you think the newer titles have something great to offer in their own way? What do you hope to see from the next Silent Hill title? Let us know below in the comments! — — — Like our stuff? Amnesia: The Dark Descent - Mainstream Edition (From the Creators of Resident Evil 6!)

But now the unspeakable has been announced: Frictional Games, the creative studio behind Amnesia: The Dark Descent has been obtained by Capcom, the company behind Resident Evil 6. While some may say that it's a smart move, we believe that the only real horror is what Capcom will do to the flagship title of true video game horror.

Sexism in Video Games: Research, Reason and Rebellion | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast

17:50
In our first video in our sexism in video games series, which we affectionately refer to as the #Messiah Trilogy, we made mention of a book titled "The Proteus Paradox" by Nick Yee. The Proteus Paradox is a collection of data collected in the Daedalus Project, a study of how politics, superstitions, and various social norms infiltrate the blank slate of online gaming. While the Proteus Paradox shows some amazing data in regards to online behavior, from MMO marriages to how avatar customization can be used to influence those around you, we focused on Chapter 6: The Locker Room Utopia for the data regarding how gaming is still a largely male-dominated past time. While there are instances of sexism in gaming, what is more startling is that it's not the biggest hurdle in making gaming a socially acceptable past time for women. A few of the biggest detriments to women being equally accepted as gamers include the perceptions that most women are iPhone and Angry Bird "casual gamers", which could lead to a general lack of respect for female gamers when they are in positions of decision making in MMORPGs. And even picking up a video game at the local game shop could be an adventure in social stigmas. Additionally, there are reports of general harassment towards female gamers in that -besides the usual "smack-talking" abuse suffered by both men and women alike- some female gamers feel as though they're somehow 'required' to prove the legitimacy of their real life gender, through pictures or web cam video, to other gamers. And of course, there's the issues of female sexuality in video games. No doubt sex-appeal is a major marketing push for video game protagonists, but exactly how is sex-appeal in video games any different from other established mediums of entertainment? Is sex-appeal gender-exclusive, or are both male and female video game characters modeled and crafted to give the gamer a higher sense of empowerment? And what of the real-life women who, drawing inspiration from these sexualized female characters, cosplay as these very same video game characters? Are we meant to lose all reverence and respect for video game characters who show a little bit of skin? Additionally, the feminist vote appears to be split on the topic of the sexual nature of female game characters, with a female character being one feminist's sexy and confident role-model, and another feminist's oppressed fuck-toy. However, according to Nick Yee's book, there's testimony from female gamers that suggest that they wouldn't mind the sexy female characters if, say, male characters had a bit more 'umph' where it counts. Can we dare to speculate that people of both genders can actually enjoy sexuality? Le gasp! ------------ Like our stuff? Kickstarter: Professional E-Begging & Questionable Fundraisers

16:19
Ever since Double Fine Productions' astounding success with Broken Age (formerly known as Double Fine Adventure) a year ago, Kickstarter has become somewhat of a posterchild for crowdfuning on the Internet. And while the idea of an 'Online Darwinism' platform where only the strongest and most innovative ideas get to see the light of day via a direct financial support from the consumers does sound enticing on paper, the actual execution of it leaves much to be desired. We've all heard countless success stories from aspiring filmmakers, game developers and musicians who got to make their dream projects a reality. But what about the myriad of terrible projects that still make at least three times their desired goal thanks to the naïveté of the Kickstarter userbase? What about all the outrageous scams that were seconds away from pilfering the dishonestly received money and vanishing into thin air? And let's not forget about all the cases of unceremonious e-begging by Hollywood celebrities who should already have sufficient funds and/or connections to launch their projects without the need of Kickstarter but still decided to exploit it. Kickstarter represents a worthy cause, and we here at Cheshire Cat Studios are totally behind it. That said, they really need to start screening whom they grant permission to open up a campaign on their site lest they want to end up in danger of losing their credibility. Comicsgate: Social Justice, Comic Sales, and Milkshakes

53:23
LaughingMan and Natalie have been followers of the great GamerGate controversies and the rise of political correctness and social justice outrage in the video game medium. However, because neither are terribly well-versed in the comics industry, a similar iteration of political controversy within the comics book industry went by fairly unnoticed. Until recently. In our latest Extended Play podcast, LaughingMan and Natalie invite two of our comicbook-loving Patreon sponsors, Demon-eater and ArtemisWyrm, to give us a lowdown on the social justice movements within the comic industry. Marvel and DC comics have received a backlash from not only their fans, but also the comic book store owners, who have been complaining that the new politically charged themes and Rule 63 gender-swaps of many of comics greatest heroes simply aren't selling. And we ask "why not?" We are aware that comic books have long been a widely-known medium of genuine progressive societal change, and that characters like X-Men have been positive forces for real-life equality, dignity, and human rights. So why are characters like American Chavez, female Thor, and the new Iron Man and Hulk rubbing this same base of readers the wrong way? LaughingMan brings up a theory that the comics of yesterday and today are following the Ideologies found in the X-Men comics, themselves: Where Charles Xavier wants to use positive action to win hearts and minds of the public, the newer comics appear to be following the divisive and more aggressive ideologies of the X-Men's semi-antagonist, Magneto. But that's all only the tip of the iceberg: What of Batman: White Knight's reformed Joker character? What about the new crowdfunded Diversity & Comics? What's all this talk about "milkshakes"? (Well, on that last one, we're still not entirely sure... #CCSLactosIntolerant). Demon-eater and ArtemisWyrm help throw some light on #ComicsGate. — — — Like our stuff? Video Game Violence & Misogyny: A History of Media Scares | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast

VIDEO GAME VIOLENCE & MISOGYNY: A BRIEF HISTORY OF MEDIA SCARES | CCS Video Podcast Website: http://cheshirecatstudios.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/cheshirecatstudio Twitter: http://twitter.com/cheshirecatstud iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/cheshire-cat-studios-podcast/id895996074 Google+: https://plus.google.com/108762471428925104289/posts Tumblr: http://cheshirecatstudios.tumblr.com/ InvertedMind's DA Page: http://invertedmind-inc.deviantart.com In part 1 of what we affectionately call our “Social Justice Warrior Trilogy”, we investigated the lack of debate occurring on the topic of sexism and misogyny in video games, and the people who profit off of the controversies. We began with game journalist, Matt Lee’s, indignant reply to B-Mask in regards to the use of sexuality in video games, and Matt Lee’s self-righteousness and reluctance when it came to the topic of an open debate on the matter. The conversation then explored recent gaming controversies regarding an openly hostile slant of video game journalism towards their consumer-base, and the soapbox preaching that they resort to on slow news days. From Anita Sarkeesian, to Suey Park, to Jim Sterling, to David Ellis and Adam Orth, we pointed out the hypocrisies in their logic and the fact that each is profiting off of the controversies that they and the rest of yellow video game journalism perpetuates. However, as we demonstrate in Part 2 of our Social Justice Warrior Trilogy, this is nothing new. Movies, comic books, music and video games have a long, sordid past of power-hungry parasites stirring up controversies in an attempt to either gain or retain power. From violence and sex in video games, to the controversies in heavy metal music of the 1980s, to the Dungeon & Dragons Satanic panic of the same decade, to the comic book controversies of the 1950s. We brush up on our history to demonstrate that not only is it common with each new entertainment medium to be used as a scapegoat or straw man for the ills of society, but that it’s highly profitable to do so. Besides returning our attention to Anita Sarkeesian, Jack Thompson and the Social Justice Warrior movement, we focus on US politicians (Joe Lieberman, Hillary Clinton, Tipper Gore) who have spent decades vote-chasing under the banner that video games, movies and music are “robbing children of their innocence”.

Telltale Games Closure: A Cautionary Tale for Game Developers

26:21
With the closure of Telltale Games, we're not likely to get closure on their The Walking Dead series. But at least we'll get the Netflix Minecraft Story Mode... Meh. We've historically had a love/hate relationship with Telltale Games, with their outstanding writing and their increasingly abysmal gameplay mechanics, respectively. And while the closure of Telltale Games was surprising, it wasn't terribly unexpected to those who had an ear to the ground regarding gaming news (not us, mind, we mean actual game reporters). But from our estimation some of the things that contributed to the studio's closure included: The lack of 'choices mattering', the outdated and buggy proprietary game engine; and Telltale Games' over-reliance on IPs. — — — Like our stuff? The Platinum Age of Television: Nielsen Ratings Vs. Twitter

09:55
Breaking Bad, Dexter, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men; Television has never been better. Or has it? For every action there's an opposite and equal reaction, and with the rise of every new great television series there's also a lot more dross making its way into living rooms across the country and abroad. Regardless, one thing is certain, television has made a strong comeback in lieu of movies and video games. But what's with this so-called "Platinum Age of Television" and how is it measured? Is it that shows are actually getting better in regards to content, or is does it have to do with how that viewership is measured? Do these standard television rating systems even count the growing online audience found on Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming mediums? What about the rise of social media? How much pull does Facebook and Twitter really have in not only attracting television audiences, but also developing fanbases to keep the shows on the air? And while LaughingMan, Kenny, CineMax, and B-Mask lament the endings of a few of their favorite television shows (Dexter, Breaking Bad) they crack open a past issue of WIRED Magazine and debate how much validity this so-called "Platinum Age of Television" has behind it. All while trying to keep off of the radars of Disney's deadly attack helicopters. Website: http://cheshirecatstudios.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/cheshirecatstudio Twitter: http://twitter.com/cheshirecatstud Tumblr: http://cheshirecatstudios.tumblr.com/ InvertedMind's DA Page: http://invertedmind-inc.deviantart.com Transcript: LaughingMan: So, who's lamenting the ending of their favorite television shows? CineMax: *Sigh* Yeah, breaking bad is over. So is Dexter. Kenny: Yeah, I'm sad Dexter is dead. LaughingMan: See, I never remember television shows ever getting this kind of mass following. Sure, a lot of old television shows had fans, but they never had fans like this. People who follow television shows on social media. There's even an April 2013 issue Wired Magazine that states that "We're currently living in the Platinum Age of Television" and that "Television has never been better." B-Mask: Hmm. Now I know we discussed this before, but I find it really interesting when people say that we live in a certain age, like platinum or golden. Because it's so subjective as a value. Kenny: Yeah. I mean, people will say that shows like Leave It to Beaver, The Honeeymooners, The Andy Griffith Show were the golden age of television and that we'll never get any better. But based on whose perspective? Based against what exactly? LaughingMan: Well, they're actually just gauging these things not by, you know, a value. They're gauging them by an anniversary. You know, the golden anniversary, the silver anniversary, the platinum anniversary. CineMax: But of course, what's interesting is that, unlike history, which always follows a consecutive order of sorts... You know, the stone age, the bronze age, the iron age. So it always kinda progresses forward. B-Mask: Yes. CineMax: However, when we discuss mediums such as movies, video games, or hell even comic books — it's the other way around. You know, like: "Hey! Here's the golden age of comic books." Okay, what's so special about the golden age of comic books? "Ummm. Well, you know, Superman lifted a car and threw it at someone! Oh, and Wonder Woman made a timely passing racist remark! LaughingMan: LOL. B-Mask: I'd like to just quickly add: I don't know if I've said this before on the show, but I still stand by what was once said by a friend of Jeremy Clarksons. He said that there never was a golden age of television. What happened was, was that we had all this stuff that was made back in the day, and you can count, like, ten good things in a decade. Whereas now what's happened is, because we are able to create more, we are able to produce more good content than we've ever had before. However, as a result, there's a fuck of a lot more dross because we're making as much bad as we are good. Kenny: Yeah. B-Mask: So it sorta equals out that way.

Brony 'Marries' Twilight Sparkle: When Fanboys Go Too Far

10:05
DISCLAIMER: Please do not misconstrue this video as a direct onslaught on the entire brony community. The staff of Cheshire Cat Studios is fully aware that every fanbase, group or community has its rotten apples. As such, the intent of this video is not to vilify but rather scrutinize how the actions of some of the members of the community have quickly transformed 'bronies' from just another fanbase into one of the most controversial groups both on the 'Net and in real life. It's been months since we expressed our indignation over the exploits of the worst of fanboy antics, but a recent news article has resurrected our ire towards — you guessed it! — the radical elements of My Little Pony's Brony community. This time an artist of erotic My Little Pony pictures is sent a cease and desist letter by a man who claims to have married Twilight Sparkle. Rather than simply lambast the fringe fans like so many before them, B-Mask, LaughingMan and CineMax dissect the MLP phenomenon and offer possible explanations for the rise and apparent decline of the Brony movement. They also refer to their own personal experiences with the series. Double Fine Misadventure: The Tale of the $3M Indie Game

11:19
In order to increase the amount of content being released, we have decided to launch a spin-off series called CCS Podcast VERSUS. Each episode we'll be pairing up two Cheshire Cat Studios heads to discuss a trendy bit of news from the entertainment world that has caught either their interest or ire. This episode: With alarming news that Double Fine's much-anticipated point-and-click game Broken Age, made popular by their last year's successful Kickstarter campaign, has run out of funds once more, B-Mask and Kenny Farino debate whether Double Fine haven't bitten more than they can chew and try to rationalize if the game can still be considered 'indie' with that much money behind it. The Wii U Is NOT Selling: How to Fix Nintendo | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast

13:46
The Wii U Is NOT Selling: How to Fix Nintendo | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast In mid-January of 2014 Nintendo made headlines by cutting their sales projections for the Nintendo Wii U. Nintendo cuts sales projections from 9 million Wii U units to almost 2.8 million, a 70% cut. Without admitting as such, Nintendo has at least acknowledged that their touch-screen hand held device has officially failed. The backlash of the announcement was a 20% drop in Nintendo's stock, game developers questioning investing time and money into Wii U games, and becoming the subject for a new Cheshire Cat Studios Video Podcast! What originated as an After Hours discussion between LaughingMan, CineMax and Inverted-Mind regarding the Nintendo Wii U's failure was deemed too good not to make it a full video podcast. While the members of the CCS Video Podcast have covered Nintendo's obliviousness and idiotic decision-making in the past, we've never pledged our allegiance to any hunk of plastic. While we all have some level of fondness for Nintendo, we refrain from divisive tribalism and prefer to look at the situations objectively. We have been simply offering our insights on the issues of why the motion controller craze was a passing fad, and why Nintendo's sheer lack of quality titles has been self-destructive. With that being said, could the Nintendo Wii U have been salvaged into a feasible console for gamers? With the rumors of a new Nintendo console just over the horizon, is the Wii U a fault of the hardware specs? Does the lack of release dates for big name titles like Super Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, and Bayonetta 2 contribute to the problem? Find out in our latest episode! Website: http://cheshirecatstudios.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/cheshirecatstudio Twitter: http://twitter.com/cheshirecatstud Tumblr: http://cheshirecatstudios.tumblr.com/ InvertedMind's DA Page: http://invertedmind-inc.deviantart.com Transcript: LaughingMan: So, back on January 18th, Inverted-Mind, CineMax and I were going to record an audio-only After Hours episode about our good old friend Nintendo slashing their sales projections for the Wii U to a third of the original estimates. 9 million units to 2.8 million ... And the slip in stock market that happened immediately afterwards. But the recording was too good not to make it a full video podcast! May sound like old news, but Nintendo's stock is still down 20% since the news of the lowered sales projections broke about a month ago. And we want to know: Is there more to the story than Nintendo's terrible sales projection? They said, what, they were going to sell 9 million Nintendo Wii U units? CineMax: Uh-huh. LaughingMan: And now Nintendo's sales projection is about 2.8 million. CineMax: Wow. LaughingMan: Nintendo's totally axed their sales projection. I mean, what in the hell is going wrong? CineMax: And I think it's important to bring up the fact that yes, we've made several controversial videos regarding Nintendo's most recent malpractices in the past, so before all of you wonderful children of the Internet put this youtube video on pause, scroll down, and write all sorts of fallible comments accusing us of being Nintendo haters or PC fanboys, let's make one thing clear: We've never sworn allegiance to any hunk of plastic. LaughingMan: Goddamn right! CineMax: Forget about the console wars. We have absolutely no horse in this race, we're trying to remain impartial. We admit that all three consoles have flaws; however, it does seem like Nintendo is the most likeliest one to go under. LaughingMan: We're not game review sites, we're not getting paid to like something! Reference to the Gamespot Kane and Lynch advertisement controversy. Everyone: LOL. Inverted-Mind: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Cha-ching! This is the worst game ever, but I'm going to give it a ten! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's high critic metacritic ratings and low user ratings. LaughingMan: It's 'cos they're paying for our ads! *Laughs* Here comes Nintendo with a wheelbarrow full of money. Oh! Suddenly our opinion on the Nintendo Wii U has totally changed! CineMax: Get yourself a brand new Nintendo Wii U today! LaughingMan: Yes! Endorsed by the CCS Video Podcast. In fact, we're going to start printing off custom Nintendo Wii U cases! CineMax: To be fair, that's only going to devalue the Nintendo Wii U even more. LaughingMan: LOL. --- LaughingMan: So, here's the question, you guys. we keep on lambasting Nintendo for obviously bone-headed moves. I mean, you just have to back and watch some of our previous content to see that not only do we have an affinity, we do like Nintendo. We don't endorse it, but we do like it. But they're doing such stupid shit. Now! There's a couple of things Nintendo can do to remedy this. What do you guys think? RESUSCITATE AND UTILIZE PAST AND POPULAR FRANCHISES

Destiny 2 Kekistan Gauntlet a Nothingburger?

10:08
So what's the most offensive thing you've ever seen in a video game? Well it's nothing compared to the nothing burger that is the Kekistan Gauntlet in Destiny 2. Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, has removed a Kekistan-themed gauntlet from their game, and made it very well known to the public and gaming press. In light of this we ask, "Will this spark a hydra effect, where we'll see more shitlords hiding defiant little Easter eggs in video games? What of the gaming community at large?" Additionally, could such an obscure item in Destiny 2 have been discreetly removed without all of the firestorm, or was the virtue signaling a media ploy by Bungie, much like the developers of Yooka-Laylee made of removing JonTron's voice cameo prior to release? Just to also say, we know that Sargon didn't really "invent" Kekistan, more "popularized". We do not believe that the Kekistan flag is a symbol of white-nationalism or racial bigotry, but it's in fact a scathing satire of identity politics (including white-power movements) akin to the XX in Charlie Chaplin's Nazi Germany satire comedy, "The Great Dictator". It's more accurately used to irritate Social Justice Warriors and troll the sensationalist, yellow journalism media. — — — Like our stuff? Fembusters (Ghostbusters 2016) Review: Dissecting a Trainwreck

01:09:18
♫ "If there's a white straight man in your neighborhood. Who you gonna call? FEMBUSTERS!" ♫ After months of endless online leaks, rumors, and speculation the highly contrversial reboot/remake/rehash of Ghostbusters is finally here. And much to LaughingMan and CineMax's surprise, it's actually a fairly competent comedy that pays homage to the original all the while creating a unique, distinct identity for itself. Guess Paul Fieg was right all along. We should've given his movie a chance as opposed to jumping the gun and hurling insults at Sony. ... ... ... NAH, JUST MESSING WITH YOU! As predicted, the movie is a total mess. So, join everyone's favorite cynical duo as they dissect exactly what makes Ghostbusters 2016 unwatchable. — — — References: Original 'FemBusters' After Hours discussion: http://cheshirecatstudios.com/fembusters-sonys-damage-control-for-the-ghostbusters-reboot/ Midnight's Edge retrospective of all the behind the scenes troubles of the Ghostbusters 2016 reboot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-6VLuz75yw Stanz1984's Original Reddit Leak: https://tinyurl.com/gbredditleak — — — Intro Music: Ghostbusters (8 Bit Remix Cover Version) [Tribute to Ray Parker, Jr.] - 8 Bit Universe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5lcETwAItA — — — Like our stuff? Wage-Fixing in the Animation Industry: Trouble in (Cartoon) Paradise

22:52
A piece of very important animation news came out on August 24th on CartoonBrew.com, titled, “Judge Rules Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Sony, and Other Studios Can’t Evade Wage-Fixing Lawsuit.” What does this mean exactly? Basically, what’s been going on is that hollywood’s biggest animation studios have been conspiring together to fix the wages of their animators. Those studios include Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Blue Sky Studios, Sony Pictures Animation, Lucasfilm, and others. Wage fixing means that multiple competing companies will meet together and make an agreement to not recruit employees from each other by offering them better pay at one studio or another. This practice is illegal. So when did all of this even begin? Apparently it started way back in the 1980s, when Lucasfilm sold its computer animation division (which would become Pixar) to Steve Jobs. The two companies then made a secret agreement stating that they wouldn’t recruit from one another in an effort to keep the wages of their employees down. But as the animation industry boomed over the years and more studios were founded, the conspiracy grew deeper and deeper, and new studios such as Sony and Blue Sky Studios were pulled into this secret agreement. So why were the companies doing this? A qoute from the CartoonBrew article states: “According to the artists, a 2007 email from Pixar’s president Ed Catmull to then-Disney chairman Dick Cook, stated, “we have an agreement with Dreamworks not to actively pursue each other’s employees.” Perhaps the studio executives remembered all too well the bidding wars for top artists that broke out in the mid-1990s when Jeffery Katzenberg founded DreamWorks Animation. The competition for talent led to higher and higher wages for the artists. The studios, ever focused on maximizing corporate profits, likely did not want that to happen again.” So basically, these big studios have been illegally suppressing the wages of their animators for over a decade. They’re keeping the artists from seeking better jobs at other companies because every single company pays the same, and even if they didn’t, the companies have agreed to not hire from one another. So the free market is completely off limits to all these animators, they don’t have the option of getting better jobs based on talent or dedication. And that’s despicable. Batgirl Joker Cover Controversy: Wasted Effort Episode 1

14:15
Cheshire Cat Studios proudly presents… WASTED EFFORT! A new video series starring everyone’s favorite cynical duo! LaughingMan and CineMax begin the episode by highlighting the hypocrisy of online feminists and moral crusaders when it comes to fictional depiction of violence against women vs. fictional depiction of violence against men. Evidently, an unrepentant homicidal maniac (the Joker) shooting an innocent woman (Barbara Gordon) through the spine in the seminal 1988 Batman one-shot “The Killing Joke” is an intolerable act of violence as well as unequivocal evidence of the author’s misogyny. (Never mind all the evidence to the contrary, of course.) Meanwhile, a female online personality shooting an innocent man point-blank over a dozen times in one of her videos due to her illogical, paranoid fear of getting raped at all times (only to then turn to the camera and deliver an atrocious one-liner that would make even David Caruso wince) should be seen as nothing more than innocuous, wholesome fun for the whole family. Gotta love those double standards, don’t you? After that quick little demonstration, the two hosts move on to discuss the actual subject matter of this video: the recent controversy surrounding the Joker variant cover for Batgirl #41 drawn by Rafael Albuquerque. They make mention of Reason Magazine’s conflicting coverage of this incident, taking a closer look at Nick Gillespie’s take in particular. In his article, Nick Gillespie argues that even if you disagree with DC Comics’ decision to cancel Rafael Albuquerque’s cover, we should still view this as a decisive victory for the consumers. How come, you ask? Because according to the author, with the advent of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the fans now have a unique opportunity to stay in touch with and provide feedback directly to their favorite companies and artists. To quote Nick Gillespie: “Artists must now effectively collaborate with their audiences—not slavishly giving them what they want, but seriously respecting their wishes and desires.” A noble sentiment, indeed. However, the question that both LaughingMan and CineMax can’t help but ask is: “Was it really the loyal Batman fans who took umbrage with this particular cover?” Or was it a group of professional killjoys and self-appointed moral guardians — some of whom have even proudly announced their own ignorance of the Dark Knight mythos? After all, how else do you explain the existence of #SaveTheCover: A hashtag started by actual Batman readers to apprise DC Comics that they 100% support the controversial cover, as well as to disprove the plethora of erroneous statements made by the critics; such as there not being any covers depicting a male superhero being at the mercy of one of his villains. (‘Cos there are. A lot.) We can concede that Nick Gillespie’s heart is in the right place. Companies should consider the feedback provided by their own consumers if they want to ensure customer satisfaction and stay ahead of the competition. However, more often than not we see the system get abused by an implacable virtual lynch mob that tries to censor anything they don’t like — all in the name of so-called “progress.” What’s even more demoralizing, however, is that these people’ actions seem to indicate a larger problem present in our society right now: No one wants to sit down and have an open and honest debate about whatever points of contention they might have. Instead, if things don’t go your way, the best strategy these days seems to be to publicly announce your indignation with something and demand immediate reparations. And if someone dares to object to your childish temper tantrum? Just block them on social media and claim that you’re being harassed to win over the public’s sympathy once more. Hoo boy… Well, we never promised that we would start our new show on a positive note. :S Nick Gillespie's aritcle: http://reason.com/blog/2015/03/22/in-batgirl-joker-cover-the-batshit-hits — — — Like our stuff? The Game Review Aristocracy: Who Critiques the Critics? | CCS After Hours Podcast

Daniel Floyd's musings on #GamerGate: http://bit.ly/1zkS7FP Like our stuff? Game journalists are doing their best to libel their own consumer-base as misogynists in an attempt to defend their political agendas, their click-bait journalism, and their now questionable sources of revenue. The gaming press would like nothing more than to sweep the rising “conflict of interest” questions that are cropping up under the rug. Such an example is Daniel Floyd of Extra Credits fame, who is all too ready to declare that #GamerGate won’t change anything and that the campaign for journalistic integrity should be abandoned. Additionally video game reviewers like Jim Sterling have no shame in letting people know that he is “one of the cool kids”, rubbing elbows with developers, receiving special editions of products. And, in full aristocratic fashion, tells gamers to “deal with it” (insert Marie Antoinette’s “Let them eat cake”). Yet a better question remains: in the age of the Internet, exactly what do we need the gaming press and professional video game reviewers for? The Internet is a great Democracy for ideas and opinions, and almost anybody is free to praise or vent, rant or rejoice. And while any Democracy has its underlying issues – in the case of public reviews there have been cases of companies artificially inflating, say, Amazon.com reviews – the popular opinions are usually more accurate than the opinion of one single person. CineMax and LaughingMan discuss game reviewers, praise the likes of RedLetterMedia’s Previously Recorded series, chastise inconsistent video game scoring systems, rave about public reviews on Amazon and Steam, and rant on the rise (and what will be the eventual corruption) of YouTube Let’s Plays and Reviews. So, who reviews the video game reviewers? We, the people. And like the comparison between game reviewers and Marie Antoinette’s famous quote, things might not end that well for game journalism.

Female Objectification in Video Games? Anita Sarkeesian Vs. Gamers

16:24
There is a glaring deficiency of strong female characters in the video game medium, what with most representatives of said gender falling into one of two groups: 1) one-dimensional sex doll-like eye candy created solely to pander to the narrow-minded frat boy demographic (as seen in most Action and Fighting Games) or 2) expendable background characters with whom the player can enter into a romantic relationship and ultimately bed in a quick soft-core PG-13-esque cut scene as an optional side-mission of sorts (as seen in most Western RPGs). We at Cheshire Cat Studios recognize this as an important issue that needs to be dealt with and would love to see more well-written and versatile characters of BOTH genders populating the video game medium in the future. HAVING SAID THAT, we wouldn't have been ourselves had we decided to remain silent when certain 'activists' unabashedly exploit the aforementioned issue to pursue their own twisted agendas and become filthy rich. We begin by expressing our discontent with Anita Sarkeesian's misguided gender war and then move on to discuss the duplicity of the feminist movement when it comes to reshaping the game industry, the overt hostility towards female player characters from game publishers, and even 'real-life' gender politics in the context of video games (i.e., is it possible for a player to fully immerse themselves in the game if they're playing as the opposite sex?).
