Jintai Ding of the University of Cincinnati and the Chinese Academy of Sciences presented a talk titled: ZHFE, a new multivariate public key encryption scheme at the 2014 PQCrypto conference in October, 2014. Abstract: In this paper we propose a new multivariate public key encryption scheme named ZHFE. The public key is constructed using as core map two high rank HFE polynomials. The inversion of the public key is performed using a low degree polynomial of Hamming weight three. This low degree polynomial is obtained from the two high rank HFE polynomials, by means of a special reduction method that uses HFE polynomials. We show that ZHFE is relatively efficient and the it is secure against the main attacks that have threatened the security of HFE. We also propose parameters for a practical implementation of ZHFE. Fang Song - A Note on Quantum Security for Post-Quantum Cryptography

IQC member Fang Song presented a talk titled: A Note on Quantum Security for Post-Quantum Cryptography at the 2014 PQCrypto conference in October, 2014. Abstract: Shor's quantum factoring algorithm and a few other efficient quantum algorithms break many classical crypto-systems. In response, people proposed post-quantum cryptography based on computational problems that are believed hard even for quantum computers. However, security of these schemes against quantum attacks is elusive. This is because existing security analysis (almost) only deals with classical attackers and arguing security in the presence of quantum adversaries is challenging due to unique quantum features such as no-cloning. This work proposes a general framework to study which classical security proofs can be restored in the quantum setting. Basically, we split a security proof into (a sequence of) classical security reductions, and investigate what security reductions are "quantum-friendly". We characterize sufficient conditions such that a classical reductions can be "lifted" to the quantum setting. We then apply our lifting theorems to post-quantum signature schemes. We are able to show that the classical generic construction of hash-tree based signatures from one-way functions that are resistant to efficient quantum inversion algorithms, there exists a quantum-secure signature scheme. We note that the scheme in [10] is a promising (post-quantum) candidate to be implemented in practice and our result further justifies it. Actually, to obtain these results, we formalize a simple criteria, which is motivated by many classical proofs in the literature and is straight-forward to check. This makes our lifting theorem easier to apply, and it should be useful elsewhere to prove quantum security of proposed post-quantum cryptographic schemes. Finally we demonstrate the generality of our framework by showing that several existing works (Full-Domain hash in the quantum random-oracle model [47] and the simple hybrid arguments framework in [23]) can be reformulated under our unified framework. Patterson In addition to the video on YouTube there is a variety of other content available to students enrolled in the class. "In 2008, a person calling himself or herself or themselves Satoshi Nakamoto released a paper suggesting a system for an anonymous, peer-to-peer alternative money. Bitcoin was born. Although not the first digital currency ever proposed, nor the first challenger to fiat money, bitcoin is the first to have captured the broad imagination of speculators, coders, regulators, criminals and the mass media. This course puts Bitcoin in context: how do we understand money as a social, political and technological phenomenon? From discussions of ancient transactions to the rise of state-issued currencies, we will explore the social and technical aspects of bitcoin, its predecessors and potential successors, and how its features echo aspects of many different historical transaction systems. No prior knowledge of economics or computing is required. There is little academic writing on bitcoin. And this may be the first truly academic class on the topic. We want to put bitcoin in a wider perspective, to reflect on what it means for society, politics and economics, as well as how it helps us think about money both a social and a technical phenomenon. This class is not an advanced seminar on bitcoin--we will not be delving deeply into the inner workings of the system, but instead providing a bird's-eye overview with enough technical detail for you to be able to put media stories, hype and hope around bitcoin in perspective. Similarly, this is not a class in monetary economics--we won't go too deeply into monetary theory or policy, the money supply, or inflation. Instead the class invites you to think more deeply about one of the oldest systems of technology on the planet, and most ubiquitous: money, whether coin, cash, credit card or cryptocurrency, we humans have been making money for most of the past 10,000 years. How we do so in the future is a question bitcoin just maybe helps us answer."

Taylor Daniels of the University of Louisville presented a talk titled: Differential properties of the H F E cryptosystem at the 2014 PQCrypto conference in October, 2014. Abstract: Multivariate Public Key Cryptography (MPKC) has been put forth as a possible post-quantum family of cryptographic schemes. These schemes lack provable security in the reduction theoretic sense, and so their security against yet undiscovered attacks remains uncertain. The effectiveness of differential attacks on various field-based systems has prompted the investigation of differential properties of multivariate schemes to determine the extent to which they are secure from differential adversaries. Due to its role as a basis for both encryption and signature schemes we contribute to this investigation focusing on the H F E cryptosystem. We derive the differential symmetric and invariant structure of the H F E central map and that of H F E- and provide a collection of parameter sets which make these H F E systems provably secure against a differential symmetric or differential invariant attack. Abstract: In recent years, lattice-based cryptography has been recognized for its many attractive properties, such as strong provable security guarantees and apparent resistance to quantum attacks, flexibility for realizing powerful tools like fully homomorphic encryption, and high asymptotic efficiency. Indeed, several works have demonstrated that for basic tasks like encryption and authentication, lattice-based primitives can have performance competitive with (or even surpassing) those based on classical mechanisms like RSA or Diffie-Hellman. However, there still has been relatively little work on developing lattice cryptography for deployment in real-world cryptosystems and protocols. In this work, we take a step toward that goal, by giving efficient and practical lattice-based protocols for key transport, encryption, and authenticated key exchange that are suitable as "drop-in" components for proposed Internet standards and other open protocols. The security of all our proposals is provable based (sometimes in the random-oracle model) on the well-studied "leaning with errors over rings" problem, and hence on the conjectured worst-case hardness of problems on ideal lattices (against quantum algorithms). One of our main technical innovations (which may be of independent interest) is a simple, low-bandwidth reconciliation technique that allows two parties who "approximately agree" on a secret value to reach exact agreement, a setting common to essentially all lattice-bases encryption schemes. Our technique reduces the ciphertext length of prior (already compact) encryption schemes nearly twofold, at essentially no cost. Everything you need to know about cryptography in 1 hour Cryptography is hard. It usually takes many years of study before it is possible to make any serious contribution to the field; and even expert cryptographers often have flaws discovered in their work. However, merely using cryptography requires far less expertise. In this talk, I will cover everything most software developers will ever need to know about cryptography -- starting from the very beginning -- along with (time allowing) some of the reasons behind the recommendations I provide. Specific topics covered will include symmetric vs. asymmetric encryption; symmetric vs. asymmetric signatures; block ciphers; block cipher modes; key lengths; message authentication codes; hash algorithms; password handling; padding for asymmetric encryption; padding for asymmetric signing; Diffie-Hellman groups; and side channel attacks. Specific attacks will be discussed only to the extent of mentioning that they exist and explaining how cryptography-using systems should be designed to thwart them. About Colin Percival Dr. Colin Percival is a Security Officer Emeritus of the FreeBSD Project and the founder of the Tarsnap online backup service. In his spare time he attempts to improve the use of cryptography in software, both through novel cryptographic research and by attempting to educate the software developing public about the proper use of cryptography. Keccak, More Than Just SHA3SUM Gilles Van Assche Joan Daemen Michaël Peeters Recently, the American National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the selection of Keccak as the winner of the SHA-3 Cryptographic Hash Algorithm Competition. This concluded an open competition that was remarkable both for its magnitude and the involvement of the cryptographic community. Public review is of paramount importance to increase the confidence in the new standard and to favor its quick adoption. The SHA-3 competition explicitly took this into account by giving open access to the candidate algorithms and everyone in the cryptographic community could try to break them, compare their performance, or simply give comments. In this talk the authors of Keccak will introduce and highlight the strengths of their cryptographic primitive and explain how it can benefit to the FOSS community. Although Keccak, as the SHA-3 standard, will coexist with the current standard SHA-2 hash function family, it is much more than just another "SHAxSUM" algorithm. Keccak relies at its core on a new construction, called the sponge construction, which allows for simpler and more flexible modes of use. The talk will illustrate this by giving various examples on how current software designs can benefit from this greater flexibility, e.g., for all the flavors of hashing, stream encryption, authentication, authenticated encryption and pseudo-random bit generation. This talk will also focus on the different aspects that make the design of Keccak open, from the open source implementations on various platforms to initiatives to keep encouraging third-party cryptanalysis, such as the KeccakTools cryptanalysis software and the Crunchy Crypto Collision and Pre-image Contest.

Professor Bart Preneel of KU Leuven heads the COSIC (COmputer Security and Industrial Cryptography) research group. His main research area is information security with a focus on cryptographic algorithms and protocols as well as their applications to both computer and network security, and mobile communications. He teaches cryptology, network security and coding theory at the KU Leuven and was visiting professor at the Ruhr Universitaet Bochum (Germany), the T.U.Graz (Austria), the University of Bergen (Norway), and the Universiteit Gent (Belgium). In '93-'94 he was a research fellow at the University of California at Berkeley. He has taught intensive courses around the world. He undertakes industrial consulting (Mastercard International, S.W.I.F.T., Proton World International,...), and participates in the work of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC27/WG2. Professor Preneel is Vice President of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) and co-founder and chairman of LSEC vzw (Leuven Security Excellence Consortium).
