Nauman Sheikh, "Adoption of Analytics in an Enterprise"
Nauman Sheikh, Author of Implementing Analytics: A Blueprint for Design, Development, and Adoption, ASRYM Inc. Presentation from the 2014 Great Lakes Business Intelligence & Big Data Summit Topic: Adoption of Analytics in an Enterprise While pockets of success stories are available within various industries where Big Data Analytics was applied to strategic advantage for an enterprise, the real value from this breakthrough technology is if every single business activity is influenced by the insights provided by Big Data Analytics. This presentation takes a diametrically opposite view to big technology investments and over reliance on Data Scientists. The holy grail of democratization of analytics such that every single business function makes use of it lies in • Simplicity of the concept and its application to business • re-use of existing technology avoiding large up-front investments • relying on data mining versus statistics and • creating a development process that does not wholly rely on availability of Data Scientists The session will start with a simplified definition of Analytics; explain the various components needed for a complete analytics solution, explain the use of NoSQL or Hadoop and most importantly, will cover how business needs to be on-board before any project is initiated. http://www.greatlakesbisummit.com/ March 13, 2014 Marriott Hotel Troy, MI About WIT WIT Inc., is a Business Intelligence ("BI") consulting firm, headquartered in Troy, Michigan. Newt Gingrich Rips NSA's Data Mining: All That Info And They Couldn't Stop Boston Bombings
6/6/13 - Newt Gingrich appeared on Sean Hannity's show Thursday night and asked not whether the NSA's gathering of Americans' phone data was right or legal, but effective. "When you gather all this data, you don't know what you are looking for," Gingrich said. "With all this information, why couldn't they figure out there were two Chechens that had bombs in Boston? Why couldn't they figure out that there was a Pakistani who was creating a car bomb in Times Square?" "The fact that they relentlessly refuse to profile, and be accurate, and focus on people likely to kill us—and so instead they gather mounds of data about everybody—actually I think weakens our ability to find out the people who are the most dangerous," Gingrich said. "It seems like if you hired millions of people you wouldn't be able to sift through all that, would you?" Hannity asked. "They do it all by computer and code word and looking for specific things," Gingrich said, before adding, "What is it they are missing when they have all this information on innocent people and can't figure out who the guilty are?"

AppSphere 15 - How the World’s Largest Healthcare Data Warehouse Ensures Great Consumer Experience
The world of healthcare has changed dramatically in recent times with the focus on healthcare reform and a shift from large national accounts to consumer-driven markets. The largest health insurance system in the US Healthcare market, with over 106 million members and immense data about members, subscribers, patients and providers, has a wealth of information to help both the member experience and provider experience. Historically, large employers and national accounts have been the business focus, receiving and transmitting healthcare data through traditional batch file transfer processes. To serve its end-customers with information and insights in real-time, there was movement from batch transfer to web services-based data delivery model. The change however brought new challenges - multiple infrastructure, middleware, application and database layers combined with several security requirements, which severely impacted the user experience. Come see how this large health insurance firm used AppDynamics to move towards a consumer-centric organization: - A sub-second response across their complex web services stack - Scale from hundreds to millions of transaction volume in a short span of time - Deliver great consumer experience while mining the largest data warehouse in the world - Immediate victories and long term strategy shift for better use of data as information, and MORE…

Driving Business Value with Data Analytics
The explosion of data spurred on by technologies such as the Internet of Things, along with the growth of computing power and emerging data science techniques such as machine learning, makes possible a renewed understanding of a community's behaviour, which in turn, can assist in more accurately quantifying the effects of operational and planning decisions made by government officials and by those who provide them services. High fidelity demographic and movement mapping through telecommunications data, connected and autonomous vehicles, and mobile location-based services all provide unprecedented data sources to planners, designers, engineers, and technologists alike, opening up a myriad of improved outcomes for how communities are built and will be built in the future. If this data could be better shared and harnessed, it will be possible to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, better identify transportation barriers, plan for more inclusive and sustainable economies, prevent crime and mitigate the impacts of disasters, all with smarter, better coordinated, more efficient planning and operations.

Nauman Sheikh at BDF 2015 | Challenges of IoT Value Proposition – “It’s not Big Data”
Abstract: The promise of IoT adoption by industries is projected to add several trillion dollars to global economy. The holy grail of autonomous machines interacting and taking analytics driven decisions of their own accord will revolutionize industries like manufacturing, transportation and healthcare. The challenges in these early stages of the IoT and analytics revolution appear to be design & deployment of sensors, communication mechanism from sensors to big data appliances, big data analytics technology and manpower particularly data scientists. However, the progress made in the last few years has significantly improved our capacity to address these challenges. This lecture is not about any of these challenges. This presentation is about what happens next i.e. automated decision making. The autonomous decision making driven from IoT and analytics is not going to happen in a vacuum. Decisions are being made in an enterprise and there is an entire eco system of business processes, operational accountability and value proposition that exists today. In order for IoT to prove its worth, this eco-system will have to be revamped. This, in my view, is the biggest and almost insurmountable challenge in the near future and all the progress of other IoT challenges will hit a roadblock. The session will cover how to analyze and assess this challenge, how to start working towards an evolutionary roadmap to mitigate this challenge and how to ensure that the IoT initiatives are successful. Bio: Nauman Sheikh is a veteran of the data architecture profession who has built dozens of large scale operational, data warehouse and analytics systems over the last 18 years. He has worked in three continents solving business challenges in consumer credit, risk, fraud and direct marketing areas dealing with a variety of cultural, technological and legal challenges surrounding data and its use. He is a hands-on practitioner with skills ranging from data warehousing to predictive modeling to analytics driven business decisions and their audit and control frameworks. He is the author of a recently published book “Implementing Analytics: A Blueprint for Design, Development & Adoption”. He has worked with companies like Experian, Fidelity Information Systems, Navistar and Exelon. He lives near Washington D.C in USA

Technological Unemployment and Free Pizza
In recent months in Australia, it has become quite clear that many jobs are becoming obsolete due to technological unemployment. That is, unemployment caused by technological advances and the onset of automation. Death of the Driver One example is within the mining industry. Many mining sites now have fully automated trucks that drive themselves along a set route hauling iron ore as required. A once high paying truck driver job has become almost unnecessary as technology improves. I once worked for the Queensland Police Service (between 2007 and 2008) and I recall a number of police officers leaving their $50000 salaries to become truck drivers earning $100000+. Their logic was simple – why do something relatively dangerous and stressful like policing when instead they could be sitting in an air-conditioned cab getting more than twice the salary? It is predicted that by about 2035, there will be no more driving jobs – taxi drivers, truck drivers, couriers – they’ll all be gone. Uber has already been quite honest about it saying they plan to introduce an automated fleet as soon as it’s economically viable. Many observers highlight the negative impact of automation, that is, the large number of job losses. However, I’d like to talk about the many advantages. Benefits of Automation First, automated vehicles will be far safer than their human-driven counterparts. People get tired, distracted, look at their mobile phone, drink-drive, drug-drive, deal with the kids in the back seat, etc. We’re not designed to focus on one task for hours on end. Already the driverless cars being tested on the roads in North America have incredible safety records, so we can only assume that their safety will improve in the upcoming years. I foresee a society where ultimately it will become illegal to physically drive a vehicle due to the inherent danger involved. Once governments see the statistics and realise that humans are causing most of the road fatalities, they’ll be forced to act by a tech-savvy population. Second, the cost of goods and services will come down. If there are no more truck drivers to pay to deliver the groceries to the supermarkets, then ultimately the groceries will cost less. I was recently talking with a friend about automation in the fast food industry. It’s simply a matter of time before fast food restaurants no longer require workers. Hamburgers and French fries will be 100% made by robotic machinery. Technological Unemployment and the Cost of Goods Imagine a large pizza chain, let’s call them Pizza Preppers, who decide to automate their stores. Their pizza dough is made by an automated dough machine, rolled and prepared to an exact specification. The appropriate toppings are automatically cut and placed on the pizza as per the customer’s order. The pizza is put in the oven, cooked, sliced and boxed – all by machine. Finally, automated drones will deliver the pizza right to the customer’s door. All orders and payments will be handled online. When the shop is running low on tomatoes, an order will be placed with the distribution warehouse where a box of tomatoes will be packed onto an automated truck and delivered in an appropriate time-frame. Imagining further into the future, when the distribution warehouse runs low on tomatoes, it will in turn place an order with the farming network. Farms will also be fully automated. Drones will be smart enough to go out into the fields and pick appropriately ripe tomatoes and deliver them to the boxing centre. The boxing centre will automatically box the tomatoes and place them on automated delivery trucks to send to the distribution warehouses. Whenever the drones or trucks are low on power, they’ll automatically return to their charging stations (probably powered by renewable energy) where another fresh drone or truck will take their place. This cycle of demand, production and supply will continue on 24 hours a day with very little need for downtime. Ultimately, Pizza Preppers will realise that their costs have dramatically fallen. Due to competition with other automated pizza chains, they’ll be compelled to lower their prices even further. In Australia 2016, you can already buy a large pizza for $5.00. When automation hits our pizza stores, I imagine the price dropping to $1.00, or maybe even less. Eventually the CEO of Pizza Preppers decides that their costs are so negligible, that they decide that they don’t want money for their pizzas any more and find alternative ways to keep their company profitable (e.g. advertising on their boxes). The only thing they ask is that customers don’t abuse their free pizza policy, so implement measures to counter such abuse ... Addressing Big Data Impacts on the Data Center - Entisys Session 18: Big Data 2014 - A PSP Forum
Addressing Big Data Impacts on the Data Center - Entisys -Session 18: Big Data 2014 Speakers: Robert Wisnowski, Strategist, Big Data Storage and Cloud Solutions / HP, Van Young, Strategist, Big Data and Cloud Solutions / HP Thumbnail: What does "Big Data" mean in managing government information? Big Data initiatives will have transformational impacts on data center infrastructure. With a focus on strategies dealing with governance, data management, protection and utilization, this session will examine case studies of government and business responses to the higher performance, scalability, agility, and availability requirements on data center infrastructure being driven by big data initiatives. This session was presented at the 2014 PSP Big Data Forum -- Managing Government Information Effectively. Extended Description: A comprehensive approach to governance, planning, utilization, and management of data center resources is required to fully realize the value benefits of big data initiatives. Addressing issues associated with the collection, analysis, and storage of sensitive, multi-jurisdiction data will be paramount. Public and private clouds can be a large player in speed and agility of data management and access. Traditional data, Big Data, and dark data (unstructured, untagged and untapped data) all need to be stored, accessed and analyzed, allowing new value to be uncovered from what is currently neglected and considered mostly cold or stagnant in value. Much of our governments data repositories are in this category. HP case studies and examples of how HPIT's current strategies are taking advantage of their automation in their data center using Cloud Service Automation (CSA). The DB movement and storage for data queries, flexible network growth and new analytics models have outcomes exceeding IT expectations. New structuring requires new data traffic patterns that are described in detail from working HP deployed systems. USENIX Enigma 2016 - Data Integrity Based Attacks in Investigative Domains
Eric W. D. Rozier, Assistant Professor of EECS, University of Cincinnati The Trustworthy Data Engineering Laboratory (TRUST Lab) has been working with the World Bank, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the City of Cincinnati to help solve a common problem faced by many organizations involved in data driven investigations: companies and entities that attempt to disguise malicious activities through attacks on the integrity of available data. In this talk we will explore the challenge of assuring data integrity in heterogenous data systems that face the challenges of velocity, variety, and volume that accompany the domain of Big Data. We will examine real case studies in debarrment and corruption in international procurement with the World Bank, investigations into violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act with the FBI, cases of violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act with the EPA, and human rights abuses of low income citizens by corporate slum-lords in the city of Cincinnati. In each of these cases we will show how malicious actors manipulated the data collection and data analytics process either through misinformation, abuse of regional corporate legal structures, collusion with state actors, or knowledge of underlying predictive analytics algorithms to damage the integrity of data used by machine learning and predictive analytic processes, or the outcomes derived from these processes, to avoid regulatory oversite, sanctions, and investigations launched by national and multi-national authorities. #bbuzz: Grant Ingersoll "Crowd-sourced intelligence built into Search over Hadoop"
Grant Ingersoll http://berlinbuzzwords.de/sessions/crowd-sourced-intelligence-built-search-over-hadoop Search has quickly evolved from being an extension of the data warehouse to being run as a real time decision processing system. Search is increasingly being used to gather intelligence on multi-structured data leveraging distributed platforms such as Hadoop in the background. This session will provide details on how search engines can be abused to use not text, but mathematically derived tokens to build models that implement reflected intelligence. In such a system, intelligent or trend-setting behavior of some users is reflected back at other users. More importantly, the mathematics of evaluating these models can be hidden in a conventional search engine like Solr, making the system easy to build and deploy. The session will describe how to integrate Apache Solr/Lucene with Hadoop. Then we will show how crowd-sourced search behavior can be looped back into analysis and how constantly self-correcting models can be created and deployed. Finally, we will show how these models can respond with intelligent behavior in realtime. About the speaker: About Grant Ingersoll Grant Ingersoll is a co-founder of LucidWorks as well as an active member of the Lucene community -- a Lucene and Solr committer, co-founder of the Apache Mahout machine learning project and a long standing member of the Apache Software Foundation. Grant's prior experience includes work at the Center for Natural Language Processing at Syracuse University in natural language processing and information retrieval. Grant is also the co-author of the upcoming "Taming Text" from Manning Publications.
What is your Big Data Strategy? Informatica Session 02: Big Data 2014 - A PSP Forum
Education Session 2: What is your Big Data Strategy? - Informatica Speakers: A panel discussion, led by Amy Tong, CIO, CA Lottery; Jim Hasegawa, Deputy Director of Business Planning & Research, CA State Lottery; Dr. Linette Scott, Chief Medical Information Officer for the Department of Health Care Services; Stephan Zoder, Informatica Thumbnail: What is your Big Data Strategy? More importantly what is your overall data strategy? This panel discussion from the PSP 2014 Big Data conference looks at 3 different Big Data strategies that are very dependent on type of information, the need to share data, the type of Government operation, and the needs of the organization to make decisions based on the data. Extended Description: The term big data is certainly all the buzz. Many organizations are talking about developing a big data strategy. Big data cannot be looked at as a singular initiative or effort but instead must be part of a broader organizational data strategy. Data governance, data access, data management, data integration, data retention, data security, data quality, master data management, application data integration and exchange, partner data management, reporting, analytics and visualization are all elements that must be considered for both a big data project as well as an organizations overall data strategy. This session will focus on best practices in developing and deploying an enterprise data strategy and how they relate to successful projects in government organizations. 1) Establishing the case: how to establish a credible ROI, data as strategic asset vs. overhead cost 2) Developing the program: role of Enterprise Architecture and Business sponsors 3) Planning to sustain the program: sponsorship to proof to perpetuation. Join this session for a brief presentation by state leadership on how they successfully started down the road to a comprehensive data strategy followed by an open panel discussion on the finer points of getting there. 22 Reasons to fear radiation from the Farallon Islands.
22 Reasons To Fear the Worst from Fukushima & the Farallon Islands. Harvey Wasserman | [This is the first in a two part series] UC Berkeley has been dumping radioactive waste at the Farallon Islands for the last 33 years. We demand UCB clean up the radioactive waste from the ocean. It is a lot easier to clean up the waste from the Farallons than it is from Fukushima. Fukushima's missing melted cores and radioactive gushers continue to fester in secret. Japan's harsh dictatorial censorship has been matched by a global corporate media blackout aimed—successfully—at keeping Fukushima out of the public eye. But that doesn't keep the actual radiation out of our ecosystem, our markets ... or our bodies. Speculation on the ultimate impact ranges from the utterly harmless to the intensely apocalyptic . But the basic reality is simple: for seven decades, government Bomb factories and privately-owned reactors have spewed massive quantities of unmonitored radiation into the biosphere. The impacts of these emissions on human and ecological health are unknown primarily because the nuclear industry has resolutely refused to study them. Indeed, the official presumption has always been that showing proof of damage from nuclear Bomb tests and commercial reactors falls to the victims, not the perpetrators. And that in any case, the industry will be held virtually harmless. This "see no evil, pay no damages" mindset dates from the Bombing of Hiroshima to Fukushima to the disaster coming next ... which could be happening as you read this. Here are 50 preliminary reasons why this radioactive legacy demands we prepare for the worst for our oceans, our planet, our economy ... ourselves. 1. At Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945), the U.S. military initially denied that there was any radioactive fallout, or that it could do any damage. Despite an absence of meaningful data, the victims (including a group of U.S. prisoners of war) and their supporters were officially "discredited" and scorned. 2. Likewise, when Nobel-winners Linus Pauling and Andre Sakharov correctly warned of a massive global death toll from atmospheric Bomb testing, they were dismissed with official contempt ... until they won in the court of public opinion. 3. During and after the Bomb Tests (1946-63), downwinders in the South Pacific and American west, along with thousands of U.S. "atomic vets," were told their radiation-induced health problems were imaginary ... until they proved utterly irrefutable. 4. When British Dr. Alice Stewart proved (1956) that even tiny x-ray doses to pregnant mothers could double childhood leukemia rates, she was assaulted with 30 years of heavily funded abuse from the nuclear and medical establishments. 5. But Stewart's findings proved tragically accurate, and helped set in stone the medical health physics consensus that there is no "safe dose" of radiation ... and that pregnant women should not be x-rayed, or exposed to equivalent radiation. 6. More than 400 commercial power reactors have been injected into our ecosphere with no meaningful data to measure their potential health and environmental impacts, and no systematic global data base has been established or maintained. 7. "Acceptable dose" standards for commercial reactors were conjured from faulty A-Bomb studiesbegun five years after Hiroshima, and at Fukushima and elsewhere have been continually made more lax to save the industry money. 8. Bomb/reactor fallout delivers alpha and beta particle emitters that enter the body and do long-term damage, but which industry backers often wrongly equate with less lethal external gamma/x-ray doses from flying in airplanes or living in Denver. 9. By refusing to compile long-term emission assessments, the industry systematically hides health impacts at Three Mile Island (TMI), Chernobyl, Fukushima, etc., forcing victims to rely on isolated independent studies which it automatically deems "discredited." 10. Human health damage has been amply suffered in radium watch dial painting, Bomb production, uranium mining/milling/enrichment, waste management and other radioactive work, despite decades of relentless industry denial. 11. When Dr. Ernest Sternglass, who had worked with Albert Einstein, warned that reactor emissions were harming people, thousands of copies of his Low-Level Radiation (1971)mysteriously disappeared from their primary warehouse. Harvey Wasserman's next piece is on how Fukushima threatens our human freedom and material survival. He edits www.nukefree.org, and wrote Solartopia! Our Green-Powered Earth.

We Were Lied To About 9/11 - Episode 11 - Thomas Drake
Please fast forward 48 seconds to start the interview. Youtube made me remove the song I was using. Sorry about that. Thomas Drake is a former senior executive with the National Security Agency, a United States Air Force and Navy veteran, CIA intelligence analyst, computer software expert and whistleblower. While at NSA, he blew the whistle on multi-billion dollar programmatic fraud, waste and abuse; the critical loss and coverup of 9/11 intelligence; government wrongdoing; and a dragnet electronic mass surveillance and data mining program conducted on a vast scale by the NSA (with the approval of the White House) after 9/11. Mr. Drake argued that this program violated and subverted the Constitution as well as individual sovereignty and privacy, while weakening national security and fundamentally eroding our civil liberties. In April 2010 he was charged by the US Department of Justice with a 10 felony count Espionage Act indictment facing 35 years in prison and declared an enemy of the state. All 10 original charges were dropped in July 2011 after Mr. Drake pled to a single misdemeanor count of exceeding the authorized use of a government computer with no fine or prison time. He is the 2011 recipient of the Ridenhour Truth Telling Prize, and with Jesselyn Radack the co-recipient of the 2011 Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence Award and the 2012 Hugh M. Hefner 1st Amendment Award. He was also a visiting professor of strategic leadership and information strategies at the National Defense University with the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Previous to NSA, he was a principal in a couple of dot coms. He has 12 years of industry experience in change leadership, senior management, organizational leadership and development, quality assurance, software and systems engineering (having analyzed over 150 million lines of code), learning strategies, acquisition and program management, operations and technology life-cycle integration as a contractor and consultant with both government and commercial clients including Fortune 500 and Fortune 50 companies. He was at Booz | Allen | Hamilton as a management, strategy and technology consultant and software quality engineer from 1991-1998. He served in the military for some 14 years as an active duty US Air Force aircrew member performing cryptologic linguist duties on the RC-135 airborne reconnaissance platform and as a Mission Crew Supervisor on the EC-130H electronic warfare mission during the latter years of the Cold War. He also served in the US Navy as a reserve commissioned all-source intelligence officer assigned to the National Military Joint Intelligence Center at the Pentagon serving on the ELINT, Terrorism, and Middle East/North Africa desks in the 1990s. He also had a short stint as an imagery intelligence analyst at the CIA in the late 80s. Mr. Drake is the founder and senior leader of Knowpari Systems LLC, a boutique leadership development and executive consulting firm formed in 2008 and focused on business intelligence, IT-corporate governance, risk management, operations analysis, systems thinking, strategic advising and deep learning through people, process and technology – expanding capacity, increasing performance and enhancing social and relational well-being for individuals, teams, and organizations. His outreach and speaking expertise center on delivering dynamic, interactive and compelling content in the areas of strategic leadership, international relations, contemporary international problems, professional ethics, executive management, business intelligence and decision support systems, resource strategy, complex systems (social and technical), human relations, dynamics of the information and knowledge age, information management, organizational sustainability, executive leadership, 21st Century issues, governance and decision-making, the Constitution and civil liberties as well as whistleblowing. He now writes, speaks and teaches around the world on whistleblowing, Constitutional rights, civil liberties, secrecy, surveillance and abusive corporate and government power. He has dedicated himself to defending life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

www.africom.mil - U.S. Africa Command hosted a two-day Department of Defense HIV/AIDS Prevention Program conference, January 28-29, 2009, at the command headquarters in Stuttgart Germany. Recognizing HIV/AIDS as a threat to Africa's security and stability, U.S Africa Command supports the Department of State, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other agencies with the coordination of HIV/AIDS programs, including the DOD HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP), Defense Health Program (DFP), and the Safe Blood Program. "U.S. Africa command's vision is to eventually eliminate new cases of HIV in our African partner nation militaries," said Erik Threet, U.S. Africa Command humanitarian assistance program coordinator. The command also works towards enhancing partner nation military readiness through a program called Partner Military HIV/AIDS Program (PMHAP), which assists partner nations in developing sustainable HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment programs. The conference was attended by representatives from the Naval Research Health Center San Diego, based in California; Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, based near Washington, D.C., and Africa-based doctors and medical personnel. Doctor Jerome Kim, MD, a U.S. military colonel and deputy director of science for MHRP at the Walter Reed Institute of Research, explained, "The mission is to develop a globally effective HIV-1 vaccine, and support the Presidents Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR)." The Department of Defense works with U.S. Embassies, host-nation teams and African militaries to develop a strategic plan for treating HIV/AIDS and reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS infections. "The primary focus of DHAPP program is prevention to reduce the amount of yearly incident rates of Africa military partner nations," said Threet. MHRPPs research efforts encompass threat assessment and epidemiology, HIV diagnostics, vaccine development and testing, and therapeutics research. While its primary focus is on developing a globally effective preventive HIV-1 vaccine, the MHRP provides effective prevention, care and treatment programs in each of the communities in which they conduct research. This year, more than $60 Million dollars have been allocated from PEPFAR for MHRP's HIV prevention, care, and treatment initiatives in countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria. "There have been small reports of success in United Nations HIV/Aids programs," said Major Christina Schofield, U.S. Africa command medical staff member. "Trends seem to stabilize or sometimes slightly decrease, but there is much work to be done." According to Dr. (Colonel) Schuyler Geller, U.S. Africa Command Surgeon, the HIV conference was successful. "It allowed us to interact with our partners from Defense Health Program, as well as the Laboratory partners on the continent of Africa such as Naval Medical Research Unit-3," he said. "It highlighted coordination through many organizations throughout DOD. This helps us tremendously in our fight" against one of the top killers on the continent of Africa.
