This short film tells in stark detail the stories of some of the victims at the North Mara Gold Mine in Tanzania operated by UK listed company, Acacia Mining. The mine has been plagued by human rights problems. Barrick Gold Corporation, is the majority shareholder of Acacia Mining, holding 63 per cent. Since 2014, at least 22 people have been killed and 69 injured, many by bullet wounds, at or near the remote mine in security related incidents, according to research conducted by RAID and MiningWatch Canada (MWC). Nine women and girls have been raped. A Tanzanian parliamentary inquiry set up to look into the problem in 2016, received 65 reports of killings and 270 people injured by police responsible for mine security. Tanzanian opposition and human rights monitors believe the number is higher, estimating 300 mine related deaths since 1999.

The government of Tanzania has slapped Acacia Mining with a tax bill of $190 billion. That's equivalent to almost two centuries' worth of the gold producer's revenue. The charges relate to alleged under-declared export revenue from its Bul-yan-hulu and Buz-wagi mines between 2000 and 2017. The fine is the latest development in an escalating conflict between the government and Acacia. In March, Tanzania banned exports of unprocessed gold and copper - a move Acacia says is costing it about $1 million a day in lost revenue. The government has also accused the firm of operating illegally and tax evasion. Acacia has denied the allegations. Tanzania's government has accused Acacia Mining of illegally operating in the, causing the company's shares to slump by as high as 14%. An audit ordered by President John Magufuli in March showed that Acacia togther with other mining companies, have been evading taxed for the past 19 years. The firm has been in dispute with the government since the country issued a ban on concentrate exports in March. The restriction is costing Acacia about $1 million a day in sales and the company has said it may be forced to close its flagship Bulyanhulu mine unless a solution is found. Magufuli is overhauling Tanzania's mining industry, seeking to generate more revenue to help finance projects including the building of a new port, railway and oil pipeline. Once a year, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) throws the world's largest mining convention in downtown Toronto. This year, the convention featured a track on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that was open to the public. The final session of this track was a CEO panel featuring Jamie Sokalsky, the CEO of Barrick Gold. While Sokalsky tried to present Barrick's CSR program as more than just window dressing, I got ahold of the mic to draw attention to the very real and on-going human rights abuses at two of Barrick's mine sites, first in North Mara, Tanzania and then in Porgera, Papua New Guinea. Unfazed by the fact that they turned off my mic, I raised my voice to speak louder about the scale of the devastation in Papua New Guinea. Finally, the security escorted me out as I handed out footnoted fact sheets to the audience at the forum. Barrick's entire board and shareholders will gather this April 24 in Downtown Toronto's Metro Convention Centre's John Basset Theatre at 10am. Please come and confront Barrick yourself... don't let them get away with denying the destruction their are imposing on other communities! FACT SHEET: http://protestbarrick.net/article.php?id=868 This is the text of the fact sheet I distributed at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto on March 5, 2013. It is just the tip of the iceberg regarding Barrick's abuses, but enough points to prove a point that Barrick does not promote sustainable development at their mine sites. The fact sheet also debunks the myth that self-reporting can replace regulation and independent monitoring of mining activity. camera: Zach Ruiter director: Sakura Saunders editors: Zach Ruiter and Sakura Saunders music: Illogik, "The Path"

Mugini Jacob, VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in the Mara region, Tanzania (13 April 2010) Three more cases have been reported in connection with theft of liners at the North Mara Gold Mine despite presence of police officers who guard the liners for 24 hours. The liners prevent acid water leakage into people's residential areas and River Tigithe that flows into Mara River a on the Tanzanian side. The stolen liners have been quickly been replaced to prevent leakage of harmful toxic from the mine's ponds. The Mine's Community Relations Manager Godliver Manumbu confirmed the reports without going into details. But she hints that villagers surrounding the mine have agreed to take part in guarding the liners from being stolen. 'We are working together with the two villages at the moment and we are in the final stages to sign a memorandum of understanding(MoU) so that they can start providing guards to protect the liners', Godliver says. Under the MoU some villagers will be recruited to guard the liners at ponds located at Gokona mining pit and the mine's major tailings storage facility, according to her. She names the villages as Kewanja and Matongo. The surrounding communities have always been urging the mine to do every thing possible to prevent contaminated water from leaking into water sources. 'We want the mine to install carpets in all ponds to prevent environmental pollution especially on water sources', says Sakina Juma , a food vendor operating near the mine. Another resident identified as Mwita Kihinda called for public education on the effects caused by contaminated water on health of people, livestock and environment. 'We have been complaining but we don't know the truth about the effects of contaminated. People should be educated and told the truth', laments Kihinda Kihinda. On his side George Matiko, a local leader welcomed the idea of using the villagers to guard the liners, saying that move will play a significant role to end theft of liners at the mine. 'Involvement of community will help to reduce intruders from entering the mine and if possible we are going to use traditional elders to condemn the acts', Matiko says. Last year the mine which is operated by Barrick Gold Africa come into spot light after discharging harmful toxic into River Tigithe for several weeks . The mine insisted that the seepage was triggered by theft of liners. But it was forced to spend huge amount of money to replace the stolen liners. . Since then the government has been providing police officers to guard the liners for 24 hours. At least one civilian was on Saturday last week gunned down after about 200 people invaded the mine for allegedly grabbing gold sand and clashed with police officers. 'Around 200 people invaded the mine pits and refused to move when ordered to do so by our police officers', Tarime Regional Special Police Zone Commander Constantine Masawe was quoted by the Tanzania media as saying. 'It is unfortunate incident but police officers had no option, the invaders had even attempted to grab their guns', the regional top police cop says. The mine claims that it spends plenty money and time to prevent crimes targeting its operation in the area instead of directing resources on community development projects.
