05:54
An animated comparison of the richest country in the world. All 188 countries ranked according to their National Wealth - how rich are they, and if all their money were to convert to gold, how big will the amount of gold they have relative to the size of a human. Source: Credit Suisse (Global Wealth Data Book 2017) Note: 1) Figures listed refers to National Wealth and NOT GDP!!! Top 10 Countries With The LARGEST Gold Reserves!

10:12
Check out these 10 countries with the largest gold reserves in the world! This top 10 list features some of the richest and wealthiest countries on earth that have tons of gold bars stacked up somewhere! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "SURPRISING And Interesting Facts About Money!" video here: https://youtu.be/ONpChSPqVc4 Watch our "Most AMAZING Discoveries With A Metal Detector!" video here: https://youtu.be/45JveYKafVo Watch our "Most EXPENSIVE Diamonds In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/RcZATf3Lmb0 10.) India According to the World Gold Council, the Bank of India currently holds 557.7 tons of gold. It is one of the largest stores of gold in the world! This makes up 9.9 % of the country’s total foreign reserve. Foreign exchange reserves is money or other assets held by a nation’s central bank so they can back the national currency. India, home to 1.25 billion people, is the number one largest consumer of the precious metal. Furthermore, India is one of the most reliable drivers of global demand. For example, India’s festival and wedding season, which runs from October to December, has historically been a major market for gold. And probably, one of the most interesting facts about India and gold is that India rarely invests much in gold. This is because as a country, India operates under the belief that buying gold leads to a deficit. And their belief must be proving right as things also seem to be improving for India. For instance, if you look at the last few years, India has increased its gold reserves from 557.74 to 557.77. While this might not seem like a lot, India is also at its highest point in history! In addition to what the country holds, Indian households which are considered the world’s largest hoarders of gold, hold a record 23,000-24,000 tons, which is worth about $800 billion. 9.) Netherlands In the past few years, the Netherlands has held 52% of its foreign reserve in gold. The Netherlands has a reported 612.45 tons. In 2016 it was reported that the bank was looking for a place to store all its gold because they were going to renovate the vaults and needed to moving it. The Dutch central bank is planning to move the country’s gold reserves from the center of Amsterdam to a new complex called the Cash Center. Like most countries, Dutch gold is also held in banks around the world to reduce risk. Security measures to guard the gold 24/7 have become a problem in Amsterdam. 189,000 kilos of gold will be moved at the beginning of 2022. Maybe this is one reason that over the last decade and a half, the Netherlands was selling off tons of gold in order to reduce its reserve. However, there weren’t that many buyers out there and they sold less than the country wanted. More recently the country has had less ambition to sell gold. Currently, the country holds the same amount of tons, 612.45 that they have over the last few years. However, the country has increased its percentage of foreign reserves to 61.2 %. 8.) Japan Japan is another country which had been increasing its gold reserves since the 1960’s. Their official gold holdings were reported at 765.2 tons. About 2.4% of Japan’s gold today is in foreign reserve. Historically, Japan has always held a bit more gold than other countries. This was true until 2011, when they began to sell some of their reserve in order to pump money into the economy after the tsunami and the following Fukushima nuclear disaster. But even with selling, Japan’s central bank has been one of the most aggressive practitioners of quantitative easing. For example, in January of 2016, it lowered interest rates below zero, which has helped fuel demand in gold around the world. 7.) Switzerland Prior to 1997, Switzerland was steadily building its gold reserves. In 1997, the decision was made to sell some of those reserves to bolster the Swiss currency and diversify the foreign reserves. The percent of foreign reserves in Switzerland is currently 6.7 %. Switzerland actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita and currently has reported 1,040 tons. Over time, many citizens in the country started to feel like the bank was getting rid of too much gold. They then banded together with the “Save the Swiss” movement. However, once everyone was able to vote in 2014, the vote came to a no, and gold continued to be sold. During World War II, Switzerland became the center of the gold trade in Europe, making transactions with both the Allies and Axis powers. Today, much of its gold trading is done with Hong Kong and China. Around last year, the Swiss National Bank made a $5.9 billion profit, reportedly from its gold holdings. With shocking evidence now uncovered, Zimbabwe’'s diamond trade faces suspension. "We were told ‘here are the guns, sitting in the truck, do you want to stay?’" says Andrew Cranswick, CEO of the mining company who owns the rights to mine diamonds in Marange. After his company was evicted, the Marange fields were opened up to the people and tens of thousands of Zimbabweans came to dig, paying the police a commission. Yet the police didn'’t always play fair - "$15 million worth of diamonds were confiscated", says one former miner – and soon the police were replaced by Mugabe’s own military. "Mugabe needed a way to buy the loyalty of the army" says Ken Roth, "the military were ordered to kill". In the first week of November, helicopter gunships launched a massacre on the Marange diamond fields. Evidence has been collected of 200 deaths. Those who weren’'t killed were raped or crippled. "They told us if we wanted to go home we had to sleep with the men", says one woman, "the soldiers watched and laughed". Next month, the Kimberley process, the international body charged with stopping trade in conflict diamonds, will decide whether Zimbabwe should be suspended. Yet with many Western governments involved in Zimbabwe'’s diamond trade, a former delegate of the Kimberley process believes this deadly business may yet be protected. Mapping resources that matter: Paul Bauman at TEDxCanmore

17:08
Talk Overview 90% of geophysicists in the world explore for oil and gas. Another 5% explore for mineral resources. And another 4.9% teach and regulate the previous 95%. In today's world, fluctuating commodity prices and mountainous stockpiles of recycled metals tell us that we have too much oil, uranium, coal, and iron ore. Today and in the foreseeable future, what the world is drastically scarce of is clean water, clean soil, and a common cultural legacy. Those remaining less than 0.1% of geophysicists not accounted for, above, are dedicated to developing techniques to explore for potable water, mapping soil salinization, demining previously productive agricultural land, and delineating subsurface remains of culturally rich sites threatened by development. With examples from Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, we can see how these non-destructive subsurface investigation techniques can radically improve life not only on a local and regional scale, but even on a continent wide scale. And where we are not using these approaches, we can envision how the development of access to clean water, clean soil, and mankind's cultural legacies can be greatly improved. Speaker Profile Paul Bauman is the Technical Director of the Geophysics group at WorleyParsons, in Calgary, where he has been working since 1990. He is one of the world experts on near surface applications of borehole and surface geophysical methods as applied to investigations in water resources, archaeology, soil science, geotechnical engineering, subsurface contamination, and geohazard identification. Paul has a B.Sc.E. in Geological Engineering from Princeton University, a Minor in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton, and an M.Sc. in Earth Sciences from the University of Waterloo. Paul has published widely in peer reviewed journals, scientific volumes, and conference proceedings. He has presented geophysical papers at over 100 conferences in an extraordinarily wide range of disciplines including geophysics, soil science, hydrogeology, disaster relief, archaeology, water resource development, contaminant hydrogeology, mining, mine waste management, heavy oil, shallow gas, salt water intrusion, salt water intrusion, etc. He has been an invited speaker at many educational, professional, and government institutions including Princeton University, Boston University, California State, the University of Pennsylvania, the National Water Authority in Yemen, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Royal BC Museum, and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife. Aspects of his archaeogeophysical work have been the subject of a NOVA documentary (Ancient Refuge in the Holy Land), numerous radio and television interviews, a National Geographic movie entitled "Finding Atlantis," and numerous newspaper and magazine articles including in Time, National Geographic, and the Reader's Digest. Paul's work in the Cave of Letters and other sites is featured in the recently published popular books Secrets of the Cave of Letters: Rediscovering a Dead Sea Mystery; Digging Through the Bible: Modern Archaeology and the Ancient Bible; and Digging through History: Archaeology and Religion from Atlantis to the Holocaust. Ongoing archaeogeophysical projects include the subsurface imaging of a Roman bath house from the time of Jesus, located in Nazareth; the geophysical mapping of the ancient Phoenician harbour of Tel Akko, perhaps the first constructed harbour in the world; and the geophysical mapping of the destroyed and buried remains of a World War II Nazi extermination camp at Sobibor, Poland. A few water resource projects of note include the introduction of an entirely new approach to water exploration in Africa, which raised success rates in drilling from less than 20% to over 90% in Malawi; innovative and successful geophysical water exploration programs in Yemen which tapped previously unused aquifers in areas that had gone years without significant rainfall; and the secondment to UNICEF to assess the impact of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami to the water resources of Aceh Province in Indonesia, and to begin the redevelopment and rehabilitation of water supplies to the region -- besides being an experienced geophysicist and hydrogeologist, Paul speaks fluent Indonesian and Malay.

World's Deepest Mine - Gold Alchemy

04:51
South Africa's TauTona mine, real life alchemy, and Halicephalobus Mephisto. Footage from the 2012 documentary, "Down to the Earth's Core". We have travelled into space and looked deep into the universe's depths, but the world beneath our feet remains unexplored and unseen. Now, that's about to change. For the first time in one epic unbroken shot, we embark on an impossible mission - using spectacular computer generated imagery to smash through three thousand miles of solid rock, and venture from our world into the underworld and on to the core of the Earth itself. It's a journey fraught with danger. One thousand feet down we find ourselves inside one of the planet's most volatile places - the San Andreas Fault. Caught between two huge rock slabs, we watch as stress builds and then releases. It unleashes an earthquake and blasts us on towards rivers of molten rock, explosive volcanoes, tears in the Earth's crust and giant tornadoes of liquid metal. But for every danger, there are wonders beyond imagination. Four hundred feet below the surface, a three hundred million year old fossilized forest, with every leaf and every piece of bark perfectly preserved. At one thousand feet down we enter a cave of giant crystals, glistening in deadly 122 degree heat. More than two miles underground we find buried treasure - gold and gems. Deeper still there are valuable resources - salt, oil, coal and iron. And over one hundred miles down we see the sparkling beauty of diamonds. As we descend we piece together our planet's extraordinary story. We rewind time to discover how prehistoric forests became modern-day fuel. 1700 feet down a layer of rock reveals the extraordinary story of the dinosaurs' cataclysmic death. We watch stalactites form and gold grow before our eyes. The deeper we travel into the underworld the more we understand our world above the surface. A bigger picture takes shape - a cycle of destruction and creation, driven by the core that sustains our dynamic planet and makes the Earth the only planet with life in a seemingly lifeless universe. Until, finally, three thousand miles down, we reach the core. Inside it lie the secrets of life as we know it - the magnetic force field that protects life on Earth from the sun's deadly rays, the ancient heat source that keeps our planet alive. Down to the Earth's Core brings the latest science together with breathtaking computer generated imagery. The result is an unmissable journey into an extraordinary world - full of dangers, wonders and secrets. And it's all down there, beneath our feet, right now waiting to be discovered.

Afghanistan's Secret Billion Dollar Emerald Mines

27:50
Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? Subscribe to Journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures For similar stories see: Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines https://youtu.be/c7iv1fef6qo Zimbabwe's Blood Diamond Killing Fields https://youtu.be/k9Bk5VIhjiY The Children Risking Their Lives In Underwater Gold Mines https://youtu.be/P1L_pxYZVwE "We have a lot of requests from Europe because the Emeralds from Afghanistan are the best in the world", Raphael says. He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? Welcome to Top10Archive! We live in a day and age where nuclear power is becoming a common need for daily life. In 2011, the Key World Energy Statistics found that 10% of the world's electricity was provided via nuclear power plants; but what, ultimately, fuels these plants to provide power? All across the globe, uranium mines gather the natural resource used as the basis of all nuclear power; and while many countries contribute to the mining of uranium, these 10 countries provide the highest amount per year, based on tonnes mined in 2013. Australia. History of Australia in a Nutshell.

10:38
The animated history of Australia in a nutshell. For centuries, rumors and legends are spreading among the traders, about the Terra Australis Incognita, unknown southern land. For Europeans, this is only a tale. However, in the middle of the sixteenth century, a series of world maps are created, so-called 'the maps from Dieppe,' documenting the latest Portuguese explorations, on which a mysterious land is found, called 'Le Grand Java.' A few centuries later, the map will be considered by some as the evidence of discovering Australia by Portuguese. Soon after, in sixteen-o-five a Dutch trader, Willem Janszoon, sets sails from the Dutch East Indies to search for a new land. According to his plan, he arrives at an unknown destination and names it 'Keer-Weer.' As it turns out, later on, it is Australia, modern-day Cape York. Since that moment, the sea route is frequented by the Dutch ships, which sometimes, sailing too far away are sighting the coast of Terra Australis. The Dutch, bring Terra Australis to the world maps. In sixteen-eighty-eight, William Dampier sets out on a voyage around the New Holland, returns and convinces the Admiralty to support another expedition. In August seventeen-sixty-eight, HMS Bark the Endeavor, under the command of Captain James Cook, sets sails from England. In the year seventeen-seventy arrives at the coast of New Holland and disembarks in several spots, including Botany Bay and Possession Island and gives the land a name - the New South Wales. Cook's expedition spreads the idea to colonize the new land, and with losing the thirteen colonies, the idea grows stronger. During that time, many people in Britain live in poverty and the penalty for theft is high. Choosing between hunger, and thievery, many Brits are choosing the theft and simultaneously overpopulates the local prisons. Officially to reduce the criminal population, and unofficially to make use of the human resources British Government sends out an expedition to create a penal colony and a bridgehead for further British colonization. In seventeen-eighty-eight under the patronage of Lord Sydney, an expedition arrives at Botany Bay under the command of Arthur Philip, carrying seven hundred and thirty convicts and two hundred and fifty free men plus the crew. Discovers a large bay, founds a settlement and names it after the patron of the expedition, Sydney. British push forward, and in eighteen-twenty-seven Edmund Lockyer founds Albany in modern-day Western Australia. Britain claims the entire continent. Along the increase of the free people, resistance grows, people do not want the penal status of the land. Finally, the British Parliament convinced, agrees to stop sending convicts to some of the colonies. Since eighteen-forty sending criminals will be gradually reduced, until the tenth of January eighteen-sixty-eight when the last shipment of convicts will reach the Western Australia. In eighteen-twenty-five the population equals about sixty thousand people, to reach four hundred-fifty thousand in eighteen-fifty-one, to touch, during a gold rush, over a million and fifty thousand people, just ten years later. Locally, Aborigines are oppressed. At the beginning of colonization, Aborigines not knowing the concept of property, do no know what treaties with the Europeans can bring. They are bringing disease and plagues decimating aborigines, and also the conquest of the natives pushed out from their homelands. Until the nineteen-sixty-seven, Aborigines, will not be considered as equal inhabitants and citizens of their native land. On the first of January nineteen-o-one, a dominion of the Commonwealth of Australia is proclaimed, and Sir Edmund Burton becomes the first prime minister of the federation. Along with the outbreak of the First World War, thousands of young people on a distant continent, are at war which they do not understand. Thousands of dead and wounded shock Australian public opinion, and make them realize the difference between the British and Australian interests. The Second World War breaks out. Like two decades earlier, Australia joins war along with Britain. However, the British are being defeated in the far east. Japan quickly takes new territories. Hong Kong falls. Singapore falls. Australia is under threat. The United Kingdom put on the defensive in Europe and cannot provide support. A turning point occurs. ANZAC asks the United States for protection. Along with its victories, the US takes the opportunity to pull Australia and New Zealand under its influence. The war in Europe ends and soon after also on the Pacific, the new world order is brought to life.

Kenya set to embark on countrywide mapping to explore all mineral deposits

03:07
Kenya needs to embark on serious countrywide mapping to explore all mineral deposits at its disposal. That will improve Kenya’s mining potential and increase mining revenue generation from its current 1 percent in the gross domestic product. This is according to Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu who says the ministry is operating within a precolonial mining act that has been proved to be a barrier to the development of mining in Kenya. De Grey Mining's next steps for backing up the conglomerate story

12:40
Executive Technical Director and Chief Geologist, Andy Beckwith, is explaining potential investors why it can now be the right time to invest in this gold explorer. De Grey's current share price had passed the hype phase, based on the conglomerate story, and is now fully based on solid existing gold resource definitions over 1,2 Moz. In fact, the company is soon going to start bulk sampling with three conglomerate targets. This should provide further upside potential. De Grey has just been waiting for the corresponding permit, and expects to start the first 1-5 tonnes bulk samples from the conglomerate targets in the next weeks. The new gold mill at Withnell had been planned before the first gold nuggets were found on De Grey's landpackages. So, any further discovery would just be on top of the existing value. That mill will then be able to crash very large bulk samples in the amount of up to 20,000 tonnes, preferred from the most promising conglomerate targets, possibly from Loudens Patch. Before that De Grey will continue to do field work, such as orientation sampling, mapping and initial drillings. De Grey and its neighbours, such as Novo Resources, Artemis, ect, assume that the Pilbara Region in Western Australia is a fraction of the Witwatersrand mineralization trend in South Africa. 1,6 Billion gold ounces have been mined and produced there.
Mining boom threatens Tasmania's forests

Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe The ancient forests of the Tarkine in north western Tasmania were protected by the Australian government as a site of "national heritage". But that listing has lapsed, and the government seems in no hurry to re-impose it. At the same time, resources companies are applying to mine the mineral-rich area, something that conservationists say is threatening the environment. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Tasmania.

Mt. Kilauea, Hawaii Mount Kilauea, on the southeastern part of the island of Hawaii, is the most active volcano in the world. As a part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, it's a large dome that's been formed from lava eruptions of the central crater and features lines of craters reaching east and southwest from the central mount. 9. Chimborazo, Ecuador Did you know that Mount Everest isn’t the tallest mountain?? While Mount Everest might be the tallest peak in the world… because of our planet’s shape, Mount Chimborazo is actually the furthest point, on land, that you can reach away from the earth’s core. Due to the bulge of mass around the equator, it’s 7000 feet closer to space than anywhere in the Himalayas. Pretty cool, right? Who knew?? 8. Barrow Island, Australia Barrow Island is a small island in the Indian Ocean, about 30 miles off the northwestern coast of Australia. It’s an arid place that was the site of Australia’s first, and richest, commercial oil field… but it’s the weather here that makes it stand out from everywhere else. 7. Gansbaai, South Africa There are plenty of dangerous ocean locations around the world but, without a doubt, the most extreme has to be the waters around the town of Gansbaai in South Africa. It’s a popular tourist destination for one main reason- the ability to go cage diving with Great White Sharks. 6. Mount Thor, Canada Mount Thor in the Auyuittuq (ow-you-ittuk) National Park of Baffin Island, in Canada has a 5495-foot peak. It’s in an incredibly remote place, and at first it doesn’t seem like such an extreme place- after all, it’s one-sixth the height of Everest… but this mountain trumps every other in one way- it has the highest vertical drop of anywhere in the world. 5. Tristan da Cunha Tristan da Cunha is a group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic ocean. The archipelago is 1,511 miles from Cape Town, 1,343 miles from Saint Helena, and 2,166 miles from the Falkland Islands… which makes it easily the most remote place on earth. 4. Veryovkina Cave, Georgia Caves are natural formations where rock has been worn away by water or ice. They typically are near the surface of the earth but, occasionally, there are ones that go much deeper, after all we are talking about extremes. Veryovkina cave in Georgia is the deepest reaching cave that's ever been found, and the journey to the bottom is more grueling and treacherous than you could imagine. 3. Vostok Station, Antarctica The Vostok station is a Russian research station in the Princess Elizabeth Land region of Antarctica. It was built by the Soviets in 1957 on the center of the East Antarctic ice sheet and, because of its location near the southern magnetic pole, it’s an ideal place to carry out research into geophysics, medicine, and climatology. 2. El Caminito Del Rey, Spain If extreme walks are your thing, then El Caminito in Spain is well worth a visit. It’s a suspension bridge on Malaga’s ominously named ‘walkway of death’, which allows you to walk across El Chorro gorge at a height of 328 feet. 1. Death Valley, California Death Valley, in California, is the lowest point in North America… reaching 282 feet below sea level. It’s what’s known as a graben, which is a sunken block of land between two mountain ranges, and was once the site of a 100 mile long lake. As the waters evaporated, and the region turned to desert, the salts were left in the ground and became an important natural resource in the early 1900s. Bauxite: Guinea's mineral wealth | Global 3000

05:35
Guinea holds the world's largest reserves of bauxite, a mineral from which aluminum is obtained. Eighty to eighty-five percent of Guinea's export revenues come from sales of this resource. However, the impoverished country has not benefited from its mineral wealth. Guinea's first democratically elected president is trying to reverse that. Balala on Mining

00:43
There must be transparency and accountability in Africa’s mining sector if the industry is to work for the benefit of all. That is the message the mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala delivered during the 35th Southern And Eastern African mineral centre meeting. Balala said most conflicts facing the continent's mining sector are as a result of policies that largely favor foreign companies that are exploiting mineral resources within Africa.

Mongols Shirts and Crash Course Posters! http://store.dftba.com/collections/crashcourse In which John Green wraps up revolutions month with what is arguably the most revolutionary of modern revolutions, the Industrial Revolution. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. All this, plus you'll finally learn the difference between James Watt and Thomas Newcomen, and will never again be caught telling people that your blender has a 900 Newcomen motor. The Looting Machine: Investigating Corruption in Africa

54:55
Mapping out the networks that link kleptocrats to middlemen, multinationals and markets is the key to understanding the dark side of the globalised economy. Tom Burgis, Financial Times investigations correspondent and author of a new book on the looting of Africa, discussed the tools required: following money trails, reporting from conflict zones, understanding the bigger context - and door-stepping Zimbabwe's secret police.
