Bitcoin Q&A: Schnorr signatures and the privacy roadmap

16:29
How important are privacy improvements to Bitcoin in the roadmap? How will second layers and atomic swaps help with this? When will Schnorr signatures / signature aggregation be added to Bitcoin? What are Taproot and Graftroot? Will it be done through a soft or hard fork? Should we keep transaction transparency instead of adding privacy features? Watch Pieter Wuille's presentation - https://youtu.be/YSUVRj8iznU Schnorr signature BIP - https://github.com/sipa/bips/blob/bip-schnorr/bip-schnorr.mediawiki CORRECTION / CLARIFICATION: At 3:47, I mention that Schnorr signatures had to overcome "patent encumbrances" and guessed that the patent expired somewhere around 2010. The precise expiration date of the U.S. Patent (No. 4,995,082) was February 2008. At 4:22, I say that ECDSA and EC-Schnorr are based on the difficulty of solving the discrete logarithm problem over a prime-order field. While this is true for the digital signature algorithm (DSA), ECDSA and Schnorr are based on the discrete log problem over an elliptic curve group. Ethereum Q&A: The legality of smart contracts

08:47
Are smart contracts legally binding? How can tokens represent ownership of external assets? Are those transfers of titles recognised? Where are ether transactions stored when contract code is executed? How are state transitions validated? Will smart contracts work to the extent that people envision? Should we combine smart contracts with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), or is all of this tech still too immature? Bitcoin Q&A: How to avoid re-creating systems of control

18:40
What are the implications of blockchain projects that re-create the same financial systems of control that we currently have? Should we use banks for custodial cryptocurrency services? Are there benefits to permissioned, centralised blockchains for supply chain management, digital rights management (DRM), healthcare data, or tokens for senior citizens’ credit? Why is decentralisation of control and minimising trusted third parties in finance is more important? What should we learn from the demonetisation & Gresham's Law in India? Can we achieve our dreams without capitulating on principles? These questions are from the MOOC 9.6 session, the June monthly Patreon session, and part of the Denver talk, which took place on March 23rd, June 24th, and August 6th 2018 respectively. This is the first part of a more technical talk where Andreas explores Bitcoin script, with examples from the 2nd edition of Mastering Bitcoin, focusing on the use of conditional statements, flow control, guard clauses and time locks. The examples will include advanced multi-signature scripts, hash time lock contracts and asymmetric revocable commitments. Then he answers questions about Bitcoin's quirky bugs, where Bitcoin differs from Ethereum at a scripting level, how SegWit works, how consensus rules change, and whether Bitcoin is more than just a currency. Bitcoin Q&A: Multi-signature and distributed storage

17:58
What happens when wallets (personal or at an exchange) are hacked? What is "sweeping" with regards to private keys? After a hack, is it possible to track the stolen bitcoin and identify the hacker? How do you keep bitcoin safe in a group / corporate environment? Is it possible to create a multi-signature setup with Trezor and Electrum? Could passphrases be brute-forced? What is happening with browser extension deprecation? You will have to evaluate which tools are the best based on the amount of cryptocurrency you own, your circumstances, and your threat model. Bitcoin Q&A: Regulation and the bank boycott

08:19
In 2014, you told the Canadian Senate to hold off on regulating cryptocurrencies for five years. What would you say to them now and do you see any new restrictions or regulations regarding bitcoin coming in the next 6 months? How would the Cryptocurrency Tax Fairness Act (HR-3708) affect capital gains reporting? Most regulations in the next six months will probably focus on ICOs and whether they fall under securities law. Custodial services which hold money on behalf of others may also face more scrutiny on a state-by-state basis in the United States. I don't believe in KYC/AML regulations. More and more interactions will move to decentralised exchanges; destroying the on- and off-ramps will just encourage people to stay in the cryptocurrency economy. Boycotting a technology or industry that is rapidly evolving is not a good idea. https://coincenter.org/link/the-cryptocurrency-tax-fairness-act-was-offered-as-amendment-to-the-house-tax-reform-bill-last-night-in-congress My testimony to the Canadian Senate: https://youtu.be/GP_eT6E4os8 The first question is from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on November 27th 2017. Bitcoin Q&A: Scaling strategies and adoption

06:13
What are the scaling trade-offs in the so-called "block size debate"? Moore's Law, increasing capacity through additional layers, and the two engineering strategies: make the pipe bigger vs. make the content smaller (compression). Are we in a "honeymoon" period in terms of innovation potential without patents? Does Ethereum face more scaling challenges than Bitcoin? Will open blockchains compete or cooperate with banks, such as... offering fractional reserve services? This question is from a talk which took place on May 18th 2018 for the WeAreDevelopers World Congress at Austria Center Vienna in Vienna, Austria: https://www.wearedevelopers.com/speakers/ If you want early-access to talks and a chance to participate in the monthly live Q&As with Andreas, become a patron: https://www.patreon.com/aantonop RELATED: Decentralised Globalisation - https://youtu.be/QoiR4aNbTOw Investing in Education instead of Speculation - https://youtu.be/6uXAbJQoZlE Beyond Price: Bitcoin's Impact on the Future - https://youtu.be/rvwVbRQ5Ysc The Lion and the Shark: Divergent Evolution in Cryptocurrency - https://youtu.be/d0x6CtD8iq4 Wallet design and mass adoption - https://youtu.be/WbZX6BDZJHc Mass adoption and peer-to-peer commerce - https://youtu.be/n9qIAEFS-Qs Lightning Network scaling - https://youtu.be/4KiWkwo48k0 Layered scaling and privacy - https://youtu.be/4w-bjUhpf_Q Scaling complex systems - https://youtu.be/dm9m1oQr6Ks Scaling, trust, and trade-offs - https://youtu.be/vCxmHwqyJWU Scaling is a moving target - https://youtu.be/pT9kJq_Ogrk Price volatility and store of value - https://youtu.be/wzzZT95ijTo Why I earn bitcoin instead of buying - https://youtu.be/Ci7TyD8jETY Job opportunities with cryptocurrencies - https://youtu.be/89_p4pDlQtI Inspiring cryptocurrency projects - https://youtu.be/WW8norCKUbE From barter to abstract money - https://youtu.be/KYsppZoHguQ Crossing the chasm of theoretical vs. real need - https://youtu.be/yIR0OBEAaUE Remittances and smuggling in Venezuela - https://youtu.be/RRXecXfWARw How long until mainstream adoption? - https://youtu.be/y3cKBDBabtA What is the biggest adoption hurdle? - https://youtu.be/jHgyHF3F2TI Bitcoin as everyday currency - https://youtu.be/xYvvSV4mjH0 Hyperbitcoinization - https://youtu.be/AB5MU5fXKfo Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: Hot vs. cold wallets

04:59
The dangers of custodial accounts; not your keys, not your money. Security practices for long-term vs. short-term storage, trading, and transacting. I don't leave any currency (crypto or fiat) in an exchange for longer than 15 minutes. I use these cryptocurrencies to pay my bills, so I transact very often. So far, I've only ever lost small amounts of bitcoin through stupid mistakes. 1. Don't leave your money on exchanges longer than you have to. If you day-trade, make sure you understand the risk that entails. 2. Organise a tiered storage system of hot and cold wallets, factoring in the amount of bitcoin you're storing, how you plan to use it (soon or not for a long time), and what security risks you're willing to take with each tier. 3. Use cold storage (i.e. paper wallets) for large amounts or for bitcoins you don't plan on using for a longer period of time. 4. Use hardware wallets that are PIN or password-protected 5. Use multi-signature multi-party or multi-factor wallets for carrying out your weekly business transactions. 6. Use hot wallets (ex. mobile wallets) for petty cash, or if you are the Oprah of cryptocurrency. Bitcoin Q&A: Misconceptions about Lightning Network

22:43
What are some misconceptions about the Lightning Network? How does the onion-routing work? How does channel funding work? Are there any security or legal risks to running a Lightning node? How far is the user experience development? This is not a choice between on-chain and off-chain. A large portion of transaction volume has already been conducted off-chain (i.e. within the private databases of exchanges) for years; what second-layer solutions like the Lightning Network do is to allow for similar low-cost activity without sacrificing most of the security model and trustless nature of Bitcoin. Decentralisation is not a Boolean value, it is a range. The Lightning Network is not only about payment channels, there is also routing between the payment channels of others. You do not need to open a channel with every party you want to transact with. If a merchant does open a channel, they do not have to close the channel in order to be paid. Bitcoin Q&A: Setting up secure storage devices

13:40
How secure are mobile wallets compared to desktops or hardware wallets? How easy is it for each type of device to be compromised? Does a factory reset or re-installed operating system help? How hard is it to properly set up a factory-reset or airgapped laptops? Can malware be transmitted via USB? What is the Glacier Protocol? These questions are from the MOOC 9.4 session, as well as a monthly Patreon Q&A session, which took place on March 9th and March 31st 2018 respectively. Andreas is a teaching fellow with the University of Nicosia. The first course in their Master of Science in Digital Currency degree, DFIN-511: Introduction to Digital Currencies, is offered for free as an open enrollment MOOC course to anyone interested in learning about the fundamental principles. Bitcoin Q&A: What is the roadmap?

14:05
What critical infrastructure is being worked on? A multitude of exchanges (preferably decentralised), secure wallets with intuitive user interfaces and the latest features (SegWit, RBF, CPFP), ATMs, and educational projects. What are the next big upgrades or projects in Bitcoin development? Schnorr signatures, signature aggregation, MAST, sidechains and drivechains, Taproot, and Graftroot. Are there block size increases in the roadmap? I am now record separately from Google Hangouts. The first and third set of questions are from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on February 24th 2018. There are several types of wallets that provide different ways to store and access your digital currency. Wallets can be broken down into three distinct categories – software, hardware, and paper. Software wallets can be a desktop, mobile or online. Desktop: wallets are downloaded and installed on a PC or laptop. They are only accessible from the single computer in which they are downloaded. Desktop wallets offer one of the highest levels of security however if your computer is hacked or gets a virus there is the possibility that you may lose all your funds. Online: wallets run on the cloud and are accessible from any computing device in any location. While they are more convenient to access, online wallets store your private keys online and are controlled by a third party which makes them more vulnerable to hacking attacks and theft. Mobile: wallets run on an app on your phone and are useful because they can be used anywhere including retail stores. Mobile wallets are usually much smaller and simpler than desktop wallets because of the limited space available on a mobile. Hardware: wallets differ from software wallets in that they store a user’s private keys on a hardware device like a USB. Although hardware wallets make transactions online, they are stored offline which delivers increased security. Hardware wallets can be compatible with several web interfaces and can support different currencies; it just depends on which one you decide to use. What’s more, making a transaction is easy. Users simply plug in their device to any internet enabled computer or device, enter a pin, send currency and confirm. Hardware wallets make it possible to easily transact while also keeping your money offline and away from danger. Paper: wallets are easy to use and provide a very high level of security. While the term paper wallet can simply refer to a physical copy or printout of your public and private keys, it can also refer to a piece of software that is used to securely generate a pair of keys which are then printed. Using a paper wallet is relatively straightforward. Transferring Bitcoin or any other currency to your paper wallet is accomplished by the transfer of funds from your software wallet to the public address shown on your paper wallet. Alternatively, if you want to withdraw or spend currency, all you need to do is transfer funds from your paper wallet to your software wallet. This process, often referred to as ‘sweeping,’ can either be done manually by entering your private keys or by scanning the QR code on the paper wallet. Bitcoin Q&A: What is Segregated Witness?

14:41
What is Segregated Witness (SegWit)? How do you know you’re using SegWit? SegWit fixes transaction malleability and enables further upgrades towards Bitcoin smart contracts. Can transaction malleability lead to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks? Does SegWit put witness data in a different block? Did SegWit change transaction validation? versus? Are there any security risks of invalid blocks? CORRECTION: At ~2:07, I stated the incorrect BIP number for the Bech32 address format, which should be BIP173. BIP176 is about "bits" denomination. https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0173.mediawiki More on SegWit: https://bitcoincore.org/en/2016/01/26/segwit-benefits/ These questions are from the MOOC 9.3 and 9.5 sessions which took place on March 2nd and March 16th, 2018 respectively. Bitcoin's Origins and the Genesis Blockade

33:50
In this talk, Andreas recounts the origins of Bitcoin, the meaning of the message embedded forever in its genesis block, and how we figured out who the banks truly serve when there was no other choice. He also speaks about what happens when money stops working, why censorship resistance was one of Bitcoin's most valuable characteristics from the start, and what possibilities lay in store with a global, voluntary financial system. This talk took place on August 6th 2018 as part of 'The Internet of Money Tour' at the Hilton Denver Inverness in Denver, Colorado: https://antonopoulos.com/event/arapahoe-libraries-talk/ If you want early-access to talks and a chance to participate in the monthly live Q&As with Andreas, become a patron: https://www.patreon.com/aantonop RELATED: Money As A System-of-Control - https://youtu.be/FyK4P7ZdOK8 Worse Than Useless: Financial Surveillance - https://youtu.be/n4F-h4xuXMk The Currency Wars and Bitcoin's Neutrality - https://youtu.be/Bu5Mtvy97-4 Measuring Success: Price or Principle - https://youtu.be/mPMsbgWl9p4 Why Open Blockchains Matter - https://youtu.be/uZPIz3ArQww Decentralised Globalisation - https://youtu.be/QoiR4aNbTOw Investing in Education instead of Speculation - https://youtu.be/6uXAbJQoZlE Beyond Price: Bitcoin's Impact on the Future - https://youtu.be/rvwVbRQ5Ysc Wallet design and mass adoption - https://youtu.be/WbZX6BDZJHc Mass adoption and peer-to-peer commerce - https://youtu.be/n9qIAEFS-Qs Price volatility and store of value - https://youtu.be/wzzZT95ijTo Why I earn bitcoin instead of buying - https://youtu.be/Ci7TyD8jETY Job opportunities with cryptocurrencies - https://youtu.be/89_p4pDlQtI Inspiring cryptocurrency projects - https://youtu.be/WW8norCKUbE From barter to abstract money - https://youtu.be/KYsppZoHguQ Crossing the chasm of theoretical vs. real need - https://youtu.be/yIR0OBEAaUE Remittances and smuggling in Venezuela - https://youtu.be/RRXecXfWARw How long until mainstream adption? - https://youtu.be/y3cKBDBabtA What is the biggest adoption hurdle? - https://youtu.be/jHgyHF3F2TI Bitcoin as everyday currency - https://youtu.be/xYvvSV4mjH0 Hyperbitcoinization - https://youtu.be/AB5MU5fXKfo Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: Why permissioned blockchains fail

09:27

Bitcoin Q&A: Inflation and debt systems

12:04
How do you see the roles of debt and inflation changing in society with the advent of cryptocurrencies? Does Bitcoin have the best monetary policy? Bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies are not debt instruments, whereas most of the popular, state-run forms of currency today are. You can't do fractional reserve banking or issue debt with bitcoin. Airdrops / fork coins are a form of supply inflation. How do you explain the different approaches to cryptocurrencies from China and Japan? The first question is from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on January 27th 2018. The second question is from the first monthly live Patreon Q&A session on November 27th, 2017. The third question is from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on February 24th 2018. Bitcoin Q&A: What is mining?

03:11
What is mining? Does it work as a business model? Mining - particularly regarding proof-of-work cryptocurrencies like bitcoin - provides industrial infrastructure via special purpose, high performance computing with application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to ensure security of the network. But the media don't describe it like that, because talking about the "dark web" gets more clicks and sells newspapers. The early internet was also described as an obscure technology only for geeks and criminals. People are afraid of change and we're still in the early days of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin Q&A: Protocol development security

12:56
What are the odds of "rogue developers" who introduce vulnerabilities? What happens if the digital signature algorithm is compromised? Is trust in hardware wallet developers and the firmware update process a problem? Note: I was mostly talking about Bitcoin and other popular open blockchains which have a large development communities and a robust review process before any new code is put in production. The risk of vulnerabilities introduced by developers is different for each project, and having open-source code does not prevent it if no one is reading or testing it. Bitcoin Q&A: Scaling and "Satoshi's vision"

12:10
How big will the Bitcoin blockchain get? How will optimisations that conserve space affect growth, while keeping full nodes affordable to run? Why should we add second layers for microtransactions instead of moving to altcoins? What design trade-offs will we make regarding scalability, decentralisation, privacy, and smart contracts? Bitcoin Q&A: Scaling is a moving target

06:57
Scaling solutions, advantages and disadvantages. I won't take a position on scaling options for a simple reason: I think we will do all of them. SegWit, second layer implements like Lightning Network, increasing the base block size with 4-8 Mb of capacity, Schnorr signatures, Spoonnet. Scaling is not something that is solved once; scaling is a moving target, an aspiration. As you achieve each level of scale, that opens the door for new applications; solving current problems creates the opportunity for new problems. The internet has been failing to scale for 25 years. Email, image attachments, audio, video, high-definition video, livestreaming, holographic virtual reality, etc. We have a system that allows for global transactions, without borders, a level of planetary scale immutability. As soon as we make it faster and cheaper, people will want to put _more_ data on the blockchain. We will reach Visa scale and then surpass Visa scale on an exponential curve. We can never "fix" scaling. All we can do is hope to continue to fail to scale gracefully. Solutions that are technically sensible, maintainable, and don't violate the core principles of decentralisation. We can change the rules as often as we like, but we should not appoint rulers. This talk took place on June 6th 2017 at a joint meet-up with Blockchain Professionals, BitcoinSYD and SydEthereum in Sydney, Australia: https://antonopoulos.com/event/blockchain-professionals-sydney/ RELATED: Why we should worry about optimisation, not scaling - https://youtu.be/J3sEcuCc9fg The Lightning Network - https://youtu.be/vPnO9ExJ50A Lightning, full nodes, and miners - https://youtu.be/dlJG4OHdJzs Bitcoin, Lightning, and Streaming Money - https://youtu.be/gF_ZQ_eijPs Rules vs. Rulers - https://youtu.be/9EEluhC9SxE The Scaling Rites of Passage - https://youtu.be/rZi86_ovB3Y Altcoins and the scaling debate - https://youtu.be/slbpdW-H3yk Unlimited vs. Cypherpunks - https://youtu.be/5adgo4-32HU Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: Full node and home network security

10:47
Does running a Bitcoin and Lightning node at home attract hackers? Why is security through obscurity not the best strategy? What is some general advice on securing your personal computer and home network? Are there full node starter kits? Could bitcoin nodes be cut off if ISPs blocked port 8333? Andreas M. Antonopoulos--Bitcoin Future April,2018--: What is the roadmap?

14:12
What critical infrastructure is being worked on? A multitude of exchanges (preferably decentralised), secure wallets with intuitive user interfaces and the latest features (SegWit, RBF, CPFP), ATMs, and educational projects. What are the next big upgrades or projects in Bitcoin development? Schnorr signatures, signature aggregation, MAST, sidechains and drivechains, Taproot, and Graftroot. Are there block size increases in the roadmap? Bitcoin Q&A: Passphrases and seed storage

Do passphrases protect against leaks or compromises of mnemonic seed words? Why are brain wallets usually insecure? Why should you not "roll your own crypto" and promote creative schemes that deviate from the standards (like BIP39), without at least getting peer review and testing from other developers, cryptographers, or security researchers? Bitcoin Q&A: Mass adoption & peer-to-peer commerce

07:42
When are we going to see mass adoption of open blockchains, especially by "big sellers" and merchant services like Amazon? A system of closed, centralised, weaponised poltical control vs. open source, localised / peer-to-peer commerce. Will the user experience improve? Measuring Success: Price or Principle

36:30
In this talk, Andreas questions whether our ways of measuring success in Bitcoin and open blockchains (such as price, market capitalisation, or being able to buy coffee at Starbucks) make sense, what these metrics reveal about our individual goals, and why we should instead focus on fostering communities founded on principles we want to see flourish in the world. Bitcoin Q&A: Lightning Network game theory

15:05
Can the rules of the Lightning Network be updated easily? How does it use the consensus of Bitcoin? What are other implementations (Lit, Raiden)? What are the options for channel funding & creation? What is the benefit of commitment schemes? What are hashed timelocked contracts (HTLCs)? How does the mutual guarantee against cheating work? What prevents malicious use of the revocation key to steal coins? Blockchain for Off-Chain Assets and the Need for Legal Impurities

01:28:17
Blockchain for Off-Chain Assets and the Need for Legal Impurities The Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), Queen Mary University of London, is pleased to announce the fifth seminar of the series in Paris on Regulating Cloud Computing and the Internet of Things. This seminar on Blockchain will be presented by Chris Reed, Professor of Electronic Commerce Law at Queen Mary University of London. Blockchain technology allows the creation of distributed ledgers. These distribute control among the players rather than requiring a centralised database, and so can reduce costs and speed up transactions. However, when it is used for assets which exist outside the blockchain itself, an unmodified adoption of the technology would bypass legal and regulatory requirements which, for these kinds of assets, cannot be bypassed without fundamental change to the law. Building those requirements into any blockchain-based system introduces features which are not necessary for performing its core functions, and we call these 'legal impurities'. The most important legal impurities required are those relating to identification of the parties, and introducing the ability of a trusted third party to make modifications to the ledger. Not only does introducing these legal impurities make fundamental changes to the concept behind blockchain, but it is also essential that they are implemented in ways which do not threaten the integrity of the blockchain as evidence. About the Speaker Chris Reed is a member of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). He joined the Centre in 1987 and is responsible for the University of London LLM courses in Information Technology Law, Internet Law, Electronic Banking Law and Telecommunications Law. Chris has published widely on many aspects of computer law and research in which he was involved led to the EU directives on electronic signatures and on electronic commerce. From 1997-2000, Chris was Joint Chairman of the Society for Computers and Law, and in 1997-8 he acted as Specialist Adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology. Chris participated as an Expert at the European Commission/Danish Government Copenhagen Hearing on Digital Signatures, represented the UK Government at the Hague Conference on Private International Law and has been an invited speaker at OECD and G8 international conferences. He is a former Director of CCLS, and from 2004 to 2009 was Academic Dean of the Faculty of Law & Social Sciences.

Bitcoin Q&A: SegWit adoption

07:49
Why does SegWit adoption seem stalled at 10-20% of transactions? Why would they force users to pay high fees? What are the considerations that cryptocurrency businesses (wallets, exchanges, payment processors / merchant providers, etc.) of various sizes are making in these contentious debates? Chart of SegWit adoption here: http://segwit.party/charts/# This is a question from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on December 16th 2017. How do coin selection algorithms work? What is STONEWALL and Ricochet? How did Samourai become one of the most privacy-preserving wallets? How much fungibility does Bitcoin have and how much should it have? What do you do about crime using blockchains? How likely is an on-chain privacy update and what are the implications? Bitcoin Q&A: Is quantum computing a threat?

09:18
Is quantum computing a threat to Bitcoin? How can Bitcoin become more secure against a quantum computing attack? Will this upgrade require moving coins to new addresses? Will it be implemented as a soft or hard fork? What happens to coins controlled by lost keys? CORRECTION: Apologies for the confusion - regarding the question of whether Satoshi's (suspected) coins would be vulnerable to a quantum computing attack on ECDSA, the correct answer is in the first clip at 3:05. While what I initially say at 6:10 is true, that Satoshi did not spend their coins, those coinbase transactions still used pay-to-public-key (P2PK) instead of pay-to-public-key-hash (P2PKH), which means the public keys are already exposed. Bitcoin Q&A: From barter to abstract money

07:12
Centrally controlled currencies were not the norm for most of human history, and in many small-scale human societies today it is still not the norm. Will people in more barter-based, technologically illiterate economies be able to adopt cryptocurrencies like bitcoin? What does the type of money people use say about their level of social organisation? Why are abstract forms of money the most useful for trade on large scales? This is part of a talk which took place at Pebble Beach for the Capgemini CXO Forum on November 1-3rd 2017 in Monterey, California.
