Big Lady (1968)
Brighton, East Sussex. In a back garden we see various shots of sculptor David Whipp at work, welding pieces of metal together on a huge abstract statue of a Suffragette. A girl in a bikini (looking rather cold) poses on a stool with her arms raised above her head. The progress is watched by Mrs Marie-Louise Cohen, who commissioned the statue, and her two children. Commentator explains she is something of a 60s suffragette: "She won a legal fight to become a candidate for an all-male council, but was later outvoted in favour of five men". The statue was "commemorating women's greatest victory for women for the Brighton Arts Festival". It was hoped that the statue would eventually take up a position in Pankhurst Avenue near Brighton racecourse - I wonder if it did? Note: there are cameraman's notes and a news cutting about the statue on file. The model could be Zita Madenville. Cameraman David Allan notes "The model didn't charge for the goose pimples!".
