How can Canada excel in big data? This animated video considers how Canada’s primary industries — mining, energy, forestry and agriculture — can foster economic growth in Canada’s data-driven economy. Primary industries have invested more than $50 billion in “simple” sensors installed in machinery across the country. While these sensors are important to the operation of the machinery, they do not provide robust data sets for machine learning analysis. With quality data, Canadians could discover new opportunities to lower costs, reduce environmental impacts — including waste, emissions and land disturbances — and improve overall performance. Providing quality sensor data to start-ups and big data entrepreneurs through a national open-source library could enable the next generation of Canadians to develop large-scale, big data-based businesses poised to unlock the next “big idea” for Canada.

The 35th Fisher Memorial Lecture Nancy Reid, University of Toronto Statistics departments in Canada are scrambling to introduce programs in data science, and the situation is doubtless very similar in many other countries. Many of these programs concentrate on training, with somewhat less emphasis on research. I will present my views on some of the associated research areas, with emphasis on lessons learned from a six-month thematic program on Big Data that took place at the Fields Institute in 2015. While it is difficult to predict the long term impact of the rush to data science, there does seem to be an interesting mix of both old and new statistics involved.

Splitting stops when every subset is pure (all elements belong to a single class) -- this can always be achieved, unless there are duplicate training examples with different classes.

As recently as 2005, the state of Virginia had eight centers like Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, housing more than 1,300 delinquent youth. But by 2017, after a series of reforms, that number had shrunk to one. “It's not that you can't do good work here,” said Andy Block, who, since 2014, has served as the juvenile-justice department’s director. “But the place itself and the design and the size and the location are barriers to doing good work.” Block and others are working to close Bon Air and replace it with something that reflects the juvenile justice reforms that have taken hold in Virginia and across the country—a system that once focused on confinement is now dedicated to rehabilitation. In recent years, more than 70 percent of Virginia's juvenile inmates were rearrested within three years of their release.* Read more on The Atlantic: https://www.theatlantic.com/projects/juvenile-justice/ *This documentary originally stated that Virginia has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country. This characterization was based on incomplete data. The documentary also stated that the three-year rearrest rate for current Bon Air inmates would be 74 percent. This was the rate for former juvenile inmates in Virginia in 2014. We regret the errors.

The NSW Waratahs will become the first sports team in Australia to deploy an innovative new predictive analytics program to reduce player injuries as they bid for a successful 2014 Super Rugby campaign. The Australian-first technology was launched this week in conjunction with Technology Partner and global giant, IBM. The technology will analyse player data from multiple sources to assist in the decision marking surrounding player training load and injury predication, enabling the club to field the best possible team throughout the season. The analysis predicts the likelihood of a particular player being injured, which then enables the NSW Waratahs coaching team to adapt and modify each player's personalised training program to maximise their training load and minimise their risk of injury. Semi-supervised classification has become a popular area of machine learning, where both labeled and unlabeled data are used to train a classifier. This learning paradigm has obtained promising results, specifically in the presence of a reduced set of labeled examples. We present the R package ssc (https://cran.r-project.org/package=ssc) that implements a collection of self-labeled techniques to construct a classification model. This family of techniques enlarges the original labeled set using the most confident predictions to classify unlabeled data. The techniques implemented in the ssc package can be applied to classification problems in several domains by the specification of a suitable learning scheme. At low ratios of labeled data, it can be shown to perform better than classical supervised classifiers.

Sergey V Ermolin, Technical Program Manager Spark Analytics, Big Data Technologies Intel Corp Intel recently released BigDL, an open source distributed deep Learning framework for Apache Spark. It brings native support for deep learning functionalities to Spark, provides orders of magnitude speedup than out-of-box open source DL frameworks (e.g., Caffe/Torch/TensorFlow) with respect to single node Xeon performance, and efficiently scales out deep learning workloads based on the Spark architecture. In addition, it also allows data scientists to perform distributed deep learning analysis on big data using the familiar tools including python, notebook, etc. In this talk, we will give an introduction to BigDL, show how big data users and data scientist can leverage BigDL for their deep learning (such as image recognition, object detection, NLP, etc.). BigDL users can analyze large amounts of data in a distributed fashion, which allows them to use their big data (e.g., Apache Hadoop and Spark) cluster as the unified data analytics platform for data storage, data processing and mining, feature engineering, traditional (non-deep) machine learning, and deep learning workloads. Sergey Ermolin is a valley’s veteran with a passion for machine learning and artificial intelligence. His interest in neural networks goes back to 1996 when he used them to predict aging behavior of quartz crystals and cesium atomic clocks made by Hewlett-Packard at its Santa Clara campus. Sergey is currently a member of Big Data Technologies team at Intel, working on Apache Spark projects. Sergey holds MSEE from Stanford and BS in Physics and Mechanical Engineering from Cal State University, Sacramento http://www.meetup.com/SF-Bay-ACM/ http://www.sfbayacm.org/

Google Tech Talks June, 2 2008 ABSTRACT Feature-based structured models provide a flexible and elegant framework for various information extraction (IE) tasks. These include label sequences for traditional IE, segmentation models for entity-level extractions, and skip chain models for collective labeling. I will present efficient inference algorithms for finding the highest scoring (MAP) prediction for two interesting types of structured models in IE. I will then present our recent results in max-margin training of such models. There are two popular formulations for maximum margin training of structured spaces: margin scaling and slack scaling. While margin scaling is extremely popular since it requires the same kind of MAP inference as prediction, slack scaling is believed to be more accurate and better-behaved. I will describe an efficient variational approximation to the slack scaling method that solves its inference bottleneck while retaining its accuracy advantage over margin scaling. Further I argue that existing scaling approaches do not separate the true labeling comprehensively while generating violating constraints. I will propose a new max-margin trainer PosLearn that generates violators to ensure separation at each position of a decomposable loss function. Speaker: Sunita Sarawagi Sunita Sarawagi researches in the fields of databases, data mining, machine learning and statistics.
