Anglo American's (AAL.L) diamond unit De Beers on Thursday launched the world's largest diamond exploration vessel off the coast of Namibia as it looks to maintain high production levels until 2035. The 12,000-tonne, 113-metre-long SS Nujoma was built at a cost of $157 million and is named after Sam Nujoma, Namibia's founding president. "I am very, very confident this (vessel) will allow us to continue to extract 1.2 million carats a year," De Beers CEO Bruce Cleaver told Reuters by telephone.… READ MORE : http://www.africanews.com/2017/06/16/namibia-unveils-world-s-largest-diamond-exploration-ship Africanews is a new pan-African media pioneering multilingual and independent news telling expertise in Sub-Saharan Africa. A 500-year-old Portuguese ship filled with gold estimated to be worth $13,000,000 and other treasures was unearthed in the Namibian desert along Africa’s “Skeletal Coast.” Miners from De Beers discovered the wreckage of Bom Jesus, a ship traveling from Lisbon to India in 1533, in the pit of a drained lagoon in 2008. Once excavation of the site was complete minors discovered hundreds of gold coins. It is believed the ship went down due to a combination of excess cargo and bad weather. The ship will remain in the custody of Namibia as the Portuguese government generously waived their right to the wreckage. Joan goes behind closed doors of the "Fort Knox" of diamonds – the DeBeers diamond empire, housed in one of the most secure buildings in Europe. Joan has the unique privilege of going inside for an exclusive look at where billions of dollars in diamonds are sorted and graded, including a visit to a restricted diamond vault that most of DeBeer’s own employees are forbidden to enter. Then Joan finds out what it is like to be a Hollywood starlet walking down the red carpet as she dons three-million dollars worth of diamond jewelry. This diamond ensemble loaned to Joan by DeBeers for the show’s opening is a typical example of their ongoing marketing strategy to ensure that diamonds stay in the spotlight.

The spending by the company and its joint venture partners on goods and services in the country reached N$2.8 billion (US$192 million) and covered a diverse range of suppliers for Namdeb and Debmarine Namibia. And it came in one of the most significant years of the company’s history in Namibia, when it signed its longest ever sales and marketing agreement with the Government of the Republic of Namibia. The new 10-year agreement means that more of Namibia’s diamonds will be sold in-country to support the domestic cutting and polishing sector, providing a platform for greater sustainability in the local diamond industry. It also gives the government a reliable route to market for its diamonds. Read more: http://bit.ly/2qUYjt7 © 2017 | 3BL Media/De Beers Group | All Rights Reserved

Mining group Anglo American has retained De Beers as a prize asset after a radical overhaul. The firm is banking on prospects that a surging Chinese and Indian demand for diamonds, will outstrip dwindling supply even after a 2015 crunch. The group, in which Anglo American has an 85 percent stake, has seen its market share fall from over 80 percent in the 1980s to about a third now, losing it control of supply and unleashing price volatility. Synthetic diamonds and uncertain demand from customers in the "millennial" generation, are increasing pressure on the business. Anglo has cut the value of De Beers assets in its books each year since 2012, after it had paid $5.1 billion for a 40 percent stake. But it remains the largest diamond producer by value ahead of Russia's Alrosa, securing access to top mines through close ties to countries such as Namibia, with which signed a 10-year sales deal this week, and Botswana. This is the basis of Anglo American's case for retaining De Beers in a drastic overhaul.

The mine began production in 2015, and ramped up to an estimated production of 1.5 million carats in 2016. The mine is located just three kilometers from the Nyurbinskaya pipe, the principal asset within the Nakyn field. Botuobinskaya had an estimated 69.3 million carats of reserves as of January 1, 2015, and should continue to produce for more than 30 years. 9 - Mines - Venetia Where - south Africa E.st.reseves - 71.8. million carat It is currently the largest producing diamond mine in South Africa, and is located northwest of Kruger National Park near the border with Zimbabwe. In 2013, De Beers committed to invest up to $2 billion to expand the Venetia mine underground, with production to commence in 2022. The expansion plan could add considerably more reserves to the project than currently estimated. The company estimates that the expansion will extend the life of the mine until 2046. 8 - mines - Grib Where - Russia E.st.reseves - 91.5 million carat Grib is the only significant diamond mine in Russia that is not operated by ALROSA. It was discovered by oil and gas giant Lukoil during prospecting for natural gas near Verkhotina in the Arkhangelsk region of North-Western Russia. 2016 production is expected to be around 4.5 million carats. 7 - Mines - Argyle Where - Australia E.st.reseves - 93.1 million carat Although now nearing the end of its lifespan, the Argyle mine in Australia has been the largest producer of diamonds in history, and has produced more than 750 million carats of diamonds since 1982. After 30 years of mining the open pit, the mine transitioned to a fully underground operation in 2014, with an $800 million investment from Rio Tinto, the mine’s owner. 6 - mines - Mir(mirny) Where - Russia E.st.reseves - 97.4 million carat The Mir mine is an awe-inspiring site, and now ranks as the second-largest excavated hole on Earth. It is so big that flying over the mine is banned because of reports of airborne vehicles being sucked into the pit by the temperature and pressure deviations around the hole. It measures nearly 1.2 km in diameter, and more than 500 m in depth. The mine played a very important role in the development of the diamond industry and the eventual collapse of the De Beers cartel. 5 - mines - Udachny Where - Russia E.st.reseves - 108 million carat Udachny has been the most prolific mine in Russia’s history and could be considered the twin mine of Mir. It is 640m deep, and is so steep in places that it poses a safety risk for hauling trucks to fall off the side of the road. The open pit has been in operation since 1971, and has yielded $80 billion worth of diamonds from 340 million tonnes of ore. Like Mir, Udachny has transitioned into a fully underground mine, with an over $800 million development plan. Development is currently underway. 4 - mines - Vatican Where - Angola E.sr.reseves - 110 million carat Angola, accounting for 70% of the country’s production. It was first discovered in 1965 by artisanal diggers in the region. A mine was developed in 1994, and is owned and operated by Sociedade Mineira de Catoca, a joint venture which includes the state-run mining company ENDIAMA, and Russia-based diamond producer ALROSA, amongst others. The mine began production in 1997. 3 - mines - Jubilee Where - Russia E.st.reseves- 125.4 million carat Jubilee was the largest diamond mine in the world for many years, but it dropped to fourth spot due to high production rates at other mines over the past several years. The mine’s 2015 production was estimated at 9 million carats. However, with the addition of unproven underground reserves. 2 - mines - Jwaneng Where - Botswana E.st.reseves - 149.1 million carat Not surprisingly, the highest producing diamond mine in the world by value is also one of the largest. The Jwaneng mine is located 160 kilometers southwest of Gaborone in the south of Botswana. 1 - mines - Orapa Where - Botswana E.st.reseves - 151.4 million carat The mine in Botswana is located about 500km northwest of the capital city of Gaborone in central Botswana. Orapa, meaning ‘resting place of lions’, was discovered in the 1960s, shortly after Botswana gained independence from Britain. It began production in 1971, and has been one of the highest-producing mines in the world, ever since hitting a peak production of 17.3 million carats in 2006.

by: Joseph Sheefeni The purchase of a N$3,5 billion marine vessel bought from the Bahamas, was observed in the First Quarter Trade Bulletin that was released by the Namibia Statistics Agency last week. The vessel is believed to have doubled the trade deficit to N$ 8,3 billion compared to a N$4,8, which was recorded during the same period under review. The NSA now suspects that the vessel was likely hired by industrialists for oil exploration purposes. The last time an exploration vessel was imported to Namibia was in 2016 when Debmarine Namibia built a deepwater diamond exploration and sampling vessel to the value of N$2.3 billion, called "The Motor Vessel, SS Nujoma." Labour Researcher Herbert Jauch on the other hand, suggested that as it was re-exported, it might have simply been sold after purchase, for a higher price by its importer.
