Join us on this flipped math lesson for CCLS 4.MD.C.6 where we work through a problem that was inspired by a released common core exam item where we practice measuring angles in whole number degrees of angles using a protractor.
This lesson answers the question: How do I identify a given angle? How do I find the measure of an angle using a protractor? How do I use a protractor? What is the difference between an acute and obtuse angle? How do I sketch angles of specified measure?
Our lessons are perfect for flipped classroom math teachers and students and for warm-up and exit ticket activities . This lesson is aligned with the 4th grade common core math learning standards for math and the SAT math curriculum as well.

Which type angle is the cutest? Which looks like the antlers on the head of a FULL-GROWN moose?! Find out the answers to these mysterious questions as Earl, our favorite pizza delivery man, takes us on his route for a day to show us around the world of angles.
»»-------------¤-------------««»»-------------¤-------------««
LYRICS
Between zero and ninety an angle is acute.
This angle’s small and skinny and kind of cute.
It looks like a V or the top of a Y
or the angles that you see eating pizza or pie.
Angles are all about degrees,
and here’s how to remember them with ease!
Only when an angle measures ninety do we call it right.
You can tell this angle just by sight.
It looks like an L or the corner of a square.
You’re looking at them when you’re walking up the stairs.
Angles are all about degrees,
and here’s how to remember them with ease!
Between ninety and one hundred eighty, an angle is obtuse
This angle’s kind of fat; it’s got a big caboose.
It’s like the hands on a clock when it’s quarter to two
or the antlers on the head of a full grown moose.
This video addresses the following Common Core Standards:
4.MD (Geometric measurement: understand concepts of angle and measuring angles.)

I explain what an angle measure is, how to measure angles with a protractor, and how to draw angles with a protractor.
When an angle "opens", it draws an arc of a circle, and we compare that arc to the full circle, which is 360 degrees.
Using a protractor is fairly straight-forward. You line up one side of your angle with the protractor's "zero-line" and you place the midpoint of the protractor to the vertex of the angle. Then you read the angle measure where the other side of the angle touches the half-circle of the protractor. But you need to place the protractor right.

How many types of angles can you name? Acute angle, obtuse angle, right angle and straight angle. What is the easiest way to learn and remember the types of angles? Watch the video to know how. Learn about different types of angles at: https://byjus.com/maths/types-of-angles/
Ancient mathematicians decided to break a circle into 360 different parts and call it degrees. Why? Here is the clue. It has got something to do with your birthday! Watch this video to learn different types of angles and how a circle is formed in the simplest way.
Geometry is a branch of mathematics and is all about shapes. ‘Angles’ is the most important topic of the basic mathematics. What is an angle and how is it formed? The space created between two lines is called an Angle. Angles are of different types – Acute Angle, Obtuse Angle, Right Angle, and Straight Angle. A small angle is called an Acute Angle. What is the big angle called? How are the other angles represented? The secret to the answer is in this video.
0:44 Right Angle
1:12 Obtuse Angle & Straight Angle
1:42 Circle is made up of angles
2:15 A circle is divided into 360 equal parts. How and why?

This is a simple maths tutorial answering the question of why there are 360 degrees in a circle. You can find the written tutorial here:
http://www.ninetyeast.net/maths/foundation/geometry/two-dimensional-shapes/angles/measuring-angles/why-360-degrees-in-a-circle
----------------------------------------------------
There are three theories as to why there are three hundred and sixty degrees in a circle. The first is that 360 is simply an easy number to work with because it's divisible by so many other numbers (24 in fact). But then why 360 and not 720 or 1080, which are divisible by more?
The second theory relates to the solar and lunar calendar. There are 365 days and 355 days in each respectively - and 360 is the number that's right in the middle, and once again much easier to work with.
Lastly, if you were to take the radius of a circle and make an equilateral triangle with it (identical sides and angles) you'd find that six of them fit beautifully into the circle. In the past, people used the sexagesimal system which has a base of 60 (we use the decimal system now, that has a base of 10). It's thought that each of these triangles were arbitrarily given the value of 60. And 6 x 60 = 360.
So there you have it, three theories as to why there are 360 degrees in a circle. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter why we use 360 - what's important is that you know how to measure angles and use them when needed. Check out this tutorial to learn how:

The trivia is cool though, isn't it?
