What should I charge as a freelancer? (know your CODB)
One of the only ways to ensure your business succeeds is by knowing your cost of doing business, or CODB. At the most basic level, this is literally just the cost it takes to run your business while making a profit. If you can’t make a profit then you can’t afford to provide your services to clients. It’s really that simple. But when you’re just starting out trying to find the right rates to charge for your services can be tough - you don’t want to charge too much and price yourself out of the industry or land a project you can’t handle, and you don’t want to charge too little and price others out of the industry or land projects that aren’t worth your time. So you have to come up with a number that works for you - but for most freelance video producers or freelance professionals of any kind, figuring this out can feel daunting. However, even though this seems like a really complex part of running your own business, it’s actually dependent on a lot of really simple things as you'll see in the video. Hopefully after watching this video you’ve got an idea and some tools to help calculate your CODB. If you have any questions about this video, calculating your CODB, or want to know more about freelancing or filmmaking just let me know in the comments section below! My Travel Photography Salary April 2017
Like every month, I divulge my travel photography salary. Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/brendanvanson --- The Drone I Use: http://amzn.to/2lXUzlR It's the end of another month. Or, at least it was a couple days ago. So, it's time to once again come at you with the monthly round up. As always, I feed you guys my monthly travel epic as well as give you my income and travel photography salary stats. As I mentioned in the video, I'm not sure there's such thing as a travel photography salary. To me, the word salary means that it's consistent every month, like a paycheck that's always the same number. As a traveling photographer, most of us are work on a freelance basis, or at least on contracts that are short term. So, a better term might be a travel photographer's income. Semantics, I know, but it's probably best to clear up the fact that travel photographers don't just work in an office and then go out and shoot. It's not like in the movies. It's much more wide open and less structured than that. In the field, people always ask me "who do I work for?" But, like I think almost every travel photographer out there, I work for myself. I do projects for clients, but essentially, I'm my own boss. Being a freelance travel photographer isn't the most steady source of income. But, it is a lot of fun. And, I love the freedom that comes along with it. In this episode, like all the monthly round-ups, I bring out the income octopus and breakdown my income as a travel photographer. As usual, it fits into 8 tentacles, err, categories: editorial, commerical, social, stock, vlog, blog, assignments, and affiliate/misc. Of course, those aren't the only forms of income for travel photographers, they are just my most common ones. Tomorrow, I'll be back to the regular travel photography vlogs. I'm still in Freiburg, Germany. Tomorrow I'm heading to Basel, Switzerland to pick up a rental car so I can explore with a bit more freedom. See you there!

How to calculate your hourly rate as a freelancer [whiteboard] | How much should you charge clients?
You love being your own boss and you also love the freedom that being a freelancer brings but you probably have the question the back of your mind - what should I be charging my clients? I'm Spencer X Smith from https://www.spencerXsmith.com and in 60 seconds you will learn how to calculate your hourly rate as a freelancer. If this was your only job, how much would you like to make per year? Divide that annual salary by 40 hours a week, then divide by 52 weeks a year, and multiply it by 2.5 for overhead. For example: You aim to make $100,000 per year / 40 hours a week / 52 weeks in a year X 2.5 = $120.19 You would then charge $120.19 per hour WARNING: This formula assumes you will take no vacation. If you plan on taking a vacation (or two!), then simply subtract the number of vacation week(s) from 52 and use that new number. Also, why do I have you multiply by 2.5 overhead? Here’s why, time worked - does not equal the time you can actually bill to clients. There's a lot of non-billable time that we refer to as Overhead. This includes travel, administration, billing, and business development. How to Make an Illustration Proposal, Part 2: Pricing & Usage Terms for Freelance Projects
How much should I charge for this illustration? Should I charge a small company less than a big company for art? Why does packaging illustration cost more than editorial illustration? Answering these questions is crucial to putting together a solid illustration proposal. Overall, pricing for commercial illustrators is a complex topic and it's tied to how the work is used by the client. In this video, I'll do my best to lay out some of the broad strokes and give you a sense of how to price your illustration based off of some common end-uses. How I Make Money with Photography
I explain how I make money with photography and how I use my Squarespace website to make it happen. Get a FREE trial with Squarespace and 10% off your first order - http://www.squarespace.com/firstman Check out my website - https://www.firstmanphotography.com/ When Sqaurespace got in touch with me to ask if I would make a video about their platform I decided I would only do it if I could provide value at the same time as advertising their service. Thankfully the good people at Squarespace wanted the same thing. I was a Squarespace customer for about 6 months before they started sponsoring me. The website it the gateway to how i make my money with photography and the two are intrinsically linked. Having that base on the internet provides some context about who you and people will take you seriously. The first way I make money with photography is by selling prints of my work. The website provides a fully integrated store where the prints can be ordered directly online. I make the prints myself using the Canon PRO-10s which puts me in full control of quality. Selling prints is an obvious way to make money as a landscape photographer but finding a market and people who want to buy them requires hard work and the ability to build an audience. The second way is via my landscape photography workshops. These launched successfully recently and form part of almost all landscape photographers income. This is a much bigger topic that deserves a dedicated video. If you are considering running workshops it’s important to consider your teaching style, locations, legal issues, insurance and much more. Thirdly is weddings. Most professional photographers have shot a wedding at some point. It’s another big subject that I will cover more in future. However it is a great way to make money as a photographer, the market it always there. The pressure, hard work and importance of being professional with a client can’t be overstated. You get one chance to capture each moment of the day so do not accept a wedding job lightly. Fourth is YouTube. There are several ways you can make money with YouTube. Advertising revenue, affiliate marketing and sponsorships are the usual kind of pathways to make money. Creating videos for YouTube can be amazing fun but if you plan to create videos consistently, it is very hard work. With enough dedication, hard work and a little talent, anyone can make money with photography. If you want to start a website and start making money from your photography, make your next move with Squarespace.

How Do I Get Work With No Experience?
I often get asked, "How do I get work without any experience?" Often people decide to work for free thinking that this will get them "in" with a client. While working for free will get you experience, its a terrible idea. Working for free is career suicide. The "client" will know you as the person who works for free. You cheapen your own work and you will be the "go to" photographer when the client doesn't have the budget for the pro. So how do you gain experience to hopefully break into the business. In this video, I'll tell you what you need to do. How to Price YouTube Sponsor Deals
How to Price YouTube Sponsor Deals Find YouTube Sponsorships with Famebit https://fbit.co/hQY What to charge for YouTube sponsor deals is something a lot of YouTubers struggle with when negotiating with brands. Some people use formulas and some use flat rates. There is not really a right or wrong answer here. It's a matter of perspective and what you are trying to accomplish with your channel and what relationship you want with a sponsor. I avoid trying to base Sponsor Deals of CPM rates and estimated views, because these are unreliable even if they are what most advertisers are familiar with. Typically in working with sponsors, I try to position it as them not paying for the content, but paying for editing and production work and me consulting them on what would appeal to the audience. In looking at it from that perspective and approaching brands based on that, I've been able to retain creative control and makes sure that everyone is getting value. How to Start a Freelance Photography Business with Sterling Grinnell
Sterling Grinnell started his freelance photography business in Denver Colorado. I picked up a call with Sterling to get his tips on how to start a successful freelance photography business. ⏩ Submit a question in the form below for me to answer on YouTube ( http://bit.ly/2KGVwK4 ) ► More Videos and Sterling's Gear List Below! ► How to Develop Your Style as a Photographer ( https://youtu.be/6RQB4ZIskxc ) ► Sterling's Camera ( http://amzn.to/2El8I5A ) ► Sterling's 50mm Lens ( http://amzn.to/2DIgN3g ) ► Sterling's DREAM camera! You enjoy taking photos and you want to turn it into something that will start to earn you an income. Sterling has a few great tips on starting a freelance photography business, so with out further delay I am going to pass it onto him now. 1. The best way to start a freelance photography business is to literally just get started. I know this sounds dumb, but it is an key step in starting. If you never make your first call, had out your first business card, or charge your first client than you will never start your photography business. 2. So what does that mean? What is a practical way to start a photography business? Well, When sterling first got started he bought an A6300 and just started by photographing his friends to build up a portfolio of work that he could share with prospective clients. This is key because some of the fist jobs you will get are your friends, or your friends-friends. So if no one ever hears that you are now a photographer that is going to make the difference if they hire you or they do not. 3. When people think of you they need to think, "Oh, he/she is a photographer. This happens by getting out there and shooting a lot of photos, begin to fill your Instagram and other platforms with photography, and begin to reach out to people to photograph them. 4. How are you supposed to gain experience and clients as a freelance photographer? Sometimes it means getting out and taking really cheap jobs, or second shooting for another wedding photographer. This is really good because you can watch, learn, and practice alongside someone else without taking on the full responsibility of the main photographer. 5. Strategy is key! Start taking pictures of friends. Reach out to your most popular friends on Instagram and ask them if you could do a photo shoot with them. This will help you build a name quickly. You can have these people tag you, and share with their friends the work you have done for them. 6. Know what you are worth. You need to start to develop your pricing sheet. You may have to start "cheap" and then slowly increase your prices over time until people stop buying from you. You need to work your way into how much you should charge. How long does each shoot take and how much is your time worth. #BenGKaiser #SterlingGrinnell #FreelancePhotography #PhotographyBusinessTips ------- Support My Channel With Patreon! ►►► ( https://www.patreon.com/bengkaiser ) SOCIAL Twitter ► @bengkaiser Facebook ►/bengkaiser Instagram ►@bengkaiser WHERE I LEARN: (affiliate links) Lynda.com ► http://bit.ly/2rQB2u4 Envato ► http://bit.ly/2CSoROx edX.org ► http://fxo.co/4y00 MY FAVORITE GEAR: (affiliate links) Camera ► http://amzn.to/2BWvE9o CamStand ► http://amzn.to/2BWsv9M Compute ► http://amzn.to/2zPeLvs Mouse ► http://amzn.to/2C0T9hq TubeBuddy ► https://www.tubebuddy.com/bengkaiser Host Gator ► http://bit.ly/2CBonPO ( Get 60% off Website Hosting with the link ) DISCLAIMER: ALL LINKS IN DESCRIPTION ARE AFFILIATE LINKS Thanks for Supporting Our Channel!

How Much Should You Charge for Your Artwork or Animation?
Learn How to Animate The Right Way https://ambanimation.com/ambaa/ In this video I answer a question put to me 'How Much Should You Charge For Your Artwork' I talk about the deeper mental concern of the matter by identifying the determining factor of Pricing Artwork as Self Worth. Many beginners , amateurs and hobbyists or indeed graduates struggle with this question as they are desperate to establish a career as an artist and it is that desperation that leads them into an uncertain spiral of fear and doubt. Instead of being desperate to receive income for your art you must have a definite desire to receive an income and by doing so identify that income in relation to the value that you truly feel that you provide. What do you think of yourself and your art? What would you pay for it? How experienced are you? Experience does come into play when determining a price, there can be no doubt about that. However There is more to it than just experience you must understand the nature of the business occurring and understand that it is an exchange. Your client will be willing to offer you a certain amount that is determined by his or her impression of you and your ability and of course their overall budget. However if they regard you as an asset they will consider your terms. Also you need to understand what you are receiving in return. In most cases the usual 'you'll get exposure' just isn't good enough, however you will come across opportunities where you can receive a learning experience of far greater value than any price and you definitely should consider such exchanges. Freelance Video Editor Hourly Rate | How To Work Out Your Freelance Video Editor Hourly Rate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9MqeRl-GfI - How to work out your Freelance video editor hourly rate? Well it really does depend on a number of factors. I guess the first factor is how experienced you are. How good you are at the job you do. It also depends on the type of work you are carrying out, the type of clients you have and the size budgets they are working with. I guess one of the best ways to work out what you really should be charging as your freelance video editor hourly rate is to look at your competitors. Ask yourself where are you positioning yourself in the market? If you are starting out as a freelance video editor your hourly rate will be lower than say a video editor that has been working for ten or twenty years. Work out who your competitors are, see what they are charging for their work. Then decided if you what to charge the same amount as them, under cut them, or maybe if you feel you are better then charge more. To work out your freelance video editor hourly rate it's easier to work out daily rate first. If your daily rate is say £150 then you just need to divide that by the amount of hours you are willing to work for that £150. If you are happy to work ten hours for £150 then your freelance video editor hourly rate would be £15. As a freelancer it's important to know your figures, as you will be working on different types of projects and dealing with different customers who have different size budgets. Knowing how long a certain type of job will take is also important to working out how much you will charge the client for the job. You should always have two rates in mind. Set your top rate at the figure you'd be really happy to work for say £150. And then set a lower figure, say £100. This is the figure you would be willing drop to, to carry out the same work. You can then decide when clients come to you with different budgets where you want to position yourself when quoting for projects.
Advice for New Freelance Photographers
Tips for New Freelance Photographers Freelance Photography is often underpaid and undervalued. Making it as a Freelancer is tough for Photographers and Artist. But on occasion new freelance photographers are making mistakes that are getting in their way. For one thing ,Freelance Photographers should charge a deposit for their work and should charge for editing. Not doing so is a path to not necessarily being taken seriously by paying clients. Marketing and promoting yourself as a photographer is essential in this day and age, and freelance photographers should be marketing in social media and doing local marketing and networking. I can't stress this enough, in fact, I did an entire speaking engagement about this topic at ShutterFest. Editing is something that a few photographers are resisting still, but it gives you a unique style to market yourself with and stand out from the crowd. However, this is an opportunity for freelance photographers to pick up additional work editing for people who are primarily shooters. I have a good friend that would rather shoot than edit and my advice to her was to outsource her editing for Photography and DSLR Video.

Mistakes New Freelance Photographers Make When Getting Started
Professional Photographer Sterling Grinnell tells us about some big mistakes that new freelance photographers make when getting started. Avoid these mistakes, you are off to a good start. ( http://amzn.to/2DYsSoe ) ► Sterling's Drone ( http://amzn.to/2GsLLhQ ) ► Sterling's Editing Software ( http://amzn.to/2Elxhzw ) ► Sterling's Instagram ( https://www.instagram.com/sterlinggrinnell/ ) ► Sterling's Website ( https://sterlinggrinnell.com/ ) 1. One of the first big mistakes that new freelance photographers make is not going into a photo shoot properly prepared. When you don't have a plan for a portrait session of product shoot and just showing up with your camera is a really bad idea. Some thing that Sterling got into that has helped him out a lot is building mood boards before he heads out for a shoot. What is a mood board?... You know what your model looks like, you know a general style of what you are looking for, and it is here where you flesh out these ideas. You want to find photos that match what you want to shoot. This helps you come prepared with a mindset of the poses you want to use, the composition you want to achieve, the editing you want end up performing, and the locations you want to be at. You want to avoid the mistake of just showing up at a beach or brick wall downtown somewhere and say, I have my camera, let's figure it out from here! 2. Another big mistake new freelance photographers make is overlooking the details. For instance if you are shooting a wedding don't lose the wedding rings. Sterling almost lost a set of wedding rings in a field of flowers on his last wedding shoot. Perhaps you are shooting weddings, perhaps you are not, but what we can take away from this is details are important. Mistakes new freelance photographers make often involve overlooking the details. They miss a shot, arrive late to a venue, forget a piece of crucial gear, or an essential prop and the whole shoot is thrown a curve ball. I am not saying you can't recover from a detail missed, but it makes it a lot smoother to remember the details. #BenGKaiser #PhotographyTips #FreelancePhotography #PhotographyMistakes ------- Support My Channel With Patreon! ►►► ( https://www.patreon.com/bengkaiser ) SOCIAL Twitter ► @bengkaiser Facebook ►/bengkaiser Instagram ►@bengkaiser WHERE I LEARN: (affiliate links) Lynda.com ► http://bit.ly/2rQB2u4 Envato ► http://bit.ly/2CSoROx edX.org ► http://fxo.co/4y00 MY FAVORITE GEAR: (affiliate links) Camera ► http://amzn.to/2BWvE9o CamStand ► http://amzn.to/2BWsv9M Compute ► http://amzn.to/2zPeLvs Mouse ► http://amzn.to/2C0T9hq TubeBuddy ► https://www.tubebuddy.com/bengkaiser Host Gator ► http://bit.ly/2CBonPO ( Get 60% off Website Hosting with the link ) DISCLAIMER: ALL LINKS IN DESCRIPTION ARE AFFILIATE LINKS Thanks for Supporting Our Channel!
