Learn to determine if a molecule is polar or nonpolar based on the polarity between bonds and the molecular geometry (shape). We start with the polarity between bonds using the electronegativity (EN) values on the Periodic Table provided. After that we’ll look at how the shape of the molecule, based on VSEPR, allows us to determine if the entire molecule is polar or nonpolar. H2S Molecular Geometry / Shape and Bond Angles (Note: precise bond angle is 92.1 degrees.)

A quick explanation of the molecular geometry of H2S including a description of the H2S bond angles (note: the precise bond angle for H2S is 92.1 degrees (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_sulfide). Looking at the H2S Lewis structure we can see that there are two pairs of unbounded valence electrons on the Sulfur atom. Based on VSEPR Theory (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory) these electrons will repel the electron clouds of the two other atoms and unbounded electron pairs. As a result they will be pushed down giving the H2S molecule a bent molecular geometry or shape The H2S bond angle will be about 109.5 degrees since it has a Bent molecular geometry. For the PH4+ structure use the periodic table to find the total number of valence electrons for the PH4+ molecule. Once we know how many valence electrons there are in PH4+ we can distribute them around the central atom with the goal of filling the outer shells of each atom. Liacos Educational Media's Shedding Light on Atoms series teaches students all the basics of chemistry and of atomic theory AND explains how we know what we know about these things. In this Episode, we look at, as the name suggests, ionic bonding. We explain how and why atoms form ions and demonstrate that the final charge an atom ends up with is determined by its electron configuration. We show students how to determine the chemical formula of an ionic compound and introduce polyatomic ions. We finish the program with a look at some of the differences between ionic compounds and covalent compounds, focussing in particular on why ionic compounds have high melting points, while most covalent compounds generally have low melting points.
