Make Nitric Acid - The Complete Guide

We show 3 ways to make nitric acid based on two different chemical approaches both of which can be done using easily accessible materials. Warning: The procedures in this video produce large quantities of toxic gases and deal with highly corrosive acids. All work must be performed in a fume hood with proper safety equipment. And all apparatus must be glass to withstand the acids. Chemically, nitric acid is made by bubbling nitrogen dioxide into water. So the objective in this approach is to generate nitrogen dioxide. This can be done by reacting hydrochloric acid, a nitrate salt and copper. Around 80grams of sodium nitrate, over 30 grams of copper and 100mL of hydrochloric acid (37% 12M) are the quantities needed. The exact amount isn't critical. For usable concentrations, the amount of water being converted should be small, around 20-50mL. Any source of nitrate is usable including potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate and even nitrate-based fertilizers. You can use our previous video on testing for nitrates if you want to determine if yours can be used. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5M3rUqaEYs The tricky part now is leading the gas into water. Two approaches are shown in the video. In the first approach three containers, such as jars are place inside each other to force the gas to go into the water. This is very inefficient but is very simple to do. The better approach is to lead the gas out of the generator through a tube and into a chilled container of water. The water that's converted into nitric acid can be replaced with hydrogen peroxide for better yield. The chemical waste that's generated contains the valuable copper used before and recovering it is worthwhile due to todays high copper prices. This is simply done by putting in enough aluminum metal that it reacts with all the acids and copper in solution to create a slurry of copper. This can be filtered to obtain a residue of copper. Its highly contaminated but can still be used to make more nitric acid. For further information on the chemistry type "copper and nitric acid" into google. The hydrochloric acid and nitrate salt behave as nitric acid (with nitrate from the salt and protons from the hydrochloric acid) and dissolve the copper releasing nitrogen dioxide gas. You can use other concentrations of hydrochloric acid but you need to decrease the amount of water added to keep the concentrations the same. Finally, the last way of making pure nitric acid is to react concentrated sulfuric acid and a pure nitrate salt (NOT fertilizer) and heat it in a glass distillation apparatus to distill over the pure nitric acid. Stoichiometric quantities of both reagents are recommended for maximum yield. We get our glassware from chemglass or VWR

In this video lecture, educator explains multiple functions of kidneys especially excretion of metabolic waste products and foreign chemicals. For maintenance of homeostasis there is regulation of water and electrolyte balances. Regulation of arterial pressure by excreting variable amounts of sodium and water. One of important function of kidneys is regulation of acid base balance and regulation of erythrocyte production. Synthesize glucose from amino acids and other precursors during prolonged fasting, a process referred to as gluconeogenesis. Educator explains physiologic anatomy of the kidneys, renal blood supply, the nephron: functional unit of the kidney, physiologic anatomy and nervous connections of the bladder by different diagrams. Micturition is the process by which the urinary bladder empties when it becomes filled. After filling of bladder, its wall tones the cystometrogram. Result of a stretch reflex initiated by sensory stretch receptors in the bladder wall is called micturition reflex. Brain either facilitate or inhibit micturition. There are certain abnormalities of micturition. Educator explains the process of urine formation. The first step is glomerular filtration during urine formation. Then there is determination of GFR. Physiologic control of glomerular filtration and renal blood flow have different aspects. Feedback mechanisms which are intrinsic to the kidney and keep the Renal Blood flow and GFR relatively constant despite marked changes in arterial blood pressure is called autoregulation of GFR. Arterial smooth muscle contracts and relaxes in response to increases and decreases in vascular wall tension is called myogenic mechanism. Tubuloglomerular is a feedback mechanism that links sodium and chloride concentration at the macula densa with control of renal arteriolar resistance. Sympathetic nerve fibers innervate afferent and efferent arteriole neutrally regulate GFR. Hormonal regulation of GFR can be done through vasoconstrictors or vasodilators. Feb 18, 2011 - 11 days old DSCN0826.MOV Hummingbird unexpectedly excretes ammonia in urine The Anna's hummingbird (Caltypte anna) predominantly excretes ammonia in its urine under some conditions, say Marion Preest and Carol Beuchat of San Diego State University, California [Nature, 386, 561 (1997)]. Vertebrates excrete three main end products of nitrogen metabolism, and their relative proportions in the urine vary with both the organism and its environment. Fish, amphibians, and water reptiles predominantly excrete ammonia (ammonotely) or urea (ureotely), the authors say; land reptiles excrete predominantly uric acid (urieotely), for them a more water-efficient way to excrete nitrogen. Uric acid, they say, is also thought to be the predominant end product in birds, but nobody previously has studied nitrogen excretion in birds with very high rates of water flux, such as C. anna. Hummingbirds dine mainly on floral . nectar and have the highest metabolic rates of any vertebrate. Maintaining their body temperature at low ambient temperature takes a lot of nectar, which results in high rates of water turnover. In these con- ditions, the authors say, the bird could reduce the metabolic cost by excreting nitrogen as ammonia or urea. At high ambient temperature, metabolic cost and nectar intake are lower, but the birds lose more water to evaporative cooling. In these conditions they should excrete nitrogen as uric acid to reduce excretion of water and avoid dehydration. Preest and Beuchat fed a sucrose solution to Anna's hummingbirds at ambient temperatures of 10, 20, and 40 DC. Rates of consumption at 20 and 40 DC did not differ Significantly. But at 10 DC, the rate of consumption jumped about 60%, to about 27% of the weight of the bird per hour. The San Diego scientists collected urine from the birds at the three temperatures and determined its concentrations of ammonia, urea, and uric acid. At all three temperatures, the authors report, the concentration of ammonia topped that of uric acid or urea. Owing to the different number of nitrogen atoms in the three compounds, however, the birds excreted 60 to 65% of nitrogen as uric acid at both 20 and 40 DC. At 10 DC five of 10 birds were ammonotelic, o~e was uricotelic, and urine from four contained about the same amounts of nitrogen as ammonia and uric acid. Uricotely in birds, say Preest and Beuchat, was first documented in the chicken (Gallus domesticus). Since then, for various reasons, uricotely has become widely accepted as ubiquitous in birds. The ability of the Anna's hummingbird to be ammonotelic in some conditions and uricotelic in others, they say, has been reported only for one other group of vertebrates, the crocodilians. Still, they opine, "given the surprisingly few avian species in which nitrogen excretion has been examined, and the occurrence of atypical patterns of nitrogen excretion in other vertebrate groups . . . it is possible that nonuricotelic patterns of nitrogen excretion could occur in other birds as well."
