(Transcript is below) The February 7, 2014, issue of Focus on Funds offers a full analysis of ICI's data on 2013 mutual fund and ETF flows. More information on ICI's statistical data collections can be found here: http://www.ici.org/research/stats ___________________________ VIDEO TRANSCRIPT Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs, Director, ICI Media Relations: Welcome to Focus on Funds, the Investment Company Institute's weekly roundup of industry news, ICI activities, and research findings. The full data on 2013 is in, showing mutual funds and ETFs ended the year on a high note. Gains from soaring stock prices more than offset losses from declining bond prices and helped push total assets of funds to nearly \$14 trillion—a year-over-year increase of close to 20 percent. ICI senior economist Shelly Antoniewicz takes an in-depth look at the trends. Shelly Antoniewicz, ICI Senior Economist: In addition to a rising stock market in 2013, fund assets were also bolstered by strong investor demand. [Graphic: Demand for Funds Remained Strong http://www.ici.org/pdf/fof_14_02_07_graph_1.pdf ] Combined net new cash flow of mutual funds and net share issuance of ETFs amounted to \$333 billion last year. Though still strong, last year's pace of new investment, was down somewhat from 2012, largely due to a mid-year reversal in bond fund flows. Focusing in on the bond story, investor demand for bond funds started out 2013 at a brisk pace, very similar to the past several years, and inflows through May totaled around \$110 billion. [Graphic: As Interest Rates Rose, Demand for Bond Funds Fell http://www.ici.org/pdf/fof_14_02_07_graph_2.pdf ] In June, however, long-term interest rates moved up abruptly and continued to rise through the remainder of the year, in anticipation of the Federal Reserve's plans to taper its massive bond-buying program. In response, investors moved out of bond mutual funds and ETFs in the second half of 2013 and for the year as a whole redeemed \$71 billion, on net. Meanwhile, equities had a different experience, as major stock indexes steadily climbed to new highs, equity funds received \$358 billion in 2013. [Graphic: Investors Gravitated Toward World Equity Funds http://www.ici.org/pdf/fof_14_02_07_graph_3.pdf ] While investors continued to gravitate more toward world equity funds, domestic equity funds drew 42 percent of the total new investment. In fact in 2013, domestic equity mutual funds had their first annual inflow in seven years. Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs: Antoniewicz adds that hybrid funds, which have been popular with investors seeking flexible investment strategies with exposure to the equity and bond markets, had record inflows of \$76 billion. That's this week in funds. See you next week.

Welcome to a Python for Finance tutorial series. In this series, we're going to run through the basics of importing financial (stock) data into Python using the Pandas framework. From here, we'll manipulate the data and attempt to come up with some sort of system for investing in companies, apply some machine learning, even some deep learning, and then learn how to back-test a strategy. I assume you know the fundamentals of Python. If you're not sure if that's you, click the fundamentals link, look at some of the topics in the series, and make a judgement call. If at any point you are stuck in this series or confused on a topic or concept, feel free to ask for help and I will do my best to help. https://pythonprogramming.net https://twitter.com/sentdex https://www.facebook.com/pythonprogramming.net/ https://plus.google.com/+sentdex

This example is a portfolio of three stocks: GOOG, YHOO, and MSFT. Process is: 1. I calculated for each stock the historical series of daily periodic returns (bottom left, below). 2. For each historical day (e.g., Friday 7/18), I calculate the portfolio gain/loss as if I held the current portfolio on that day. This is the essence of the idea: run historical returns through the current portfolio allocation. 3. This produces an historical series (right column, green) of simulated portfolio returns. Now I can treat as with the single-asset; e.g., if I want 95% VaR, then I need = PERCENTILE(range, 5%). For more financial risk videos, please visit our website! http://www.bionicturtle.com

Option Chain probability can help you earn huge profit from the stock market. However, the option chain analysis helps investor or trader to find out the short term sentiments in the stock market. The sentiments keep changing with news or other macroeconomic data that keep pouring in. In this video on option chain probability, i have shared my excel sheet on Implied volatility based on which you can easily find out the probability of success based on option chain data. In this excel sheet, you need to fill very simple details like current stock price or index value. The implied volatility data on both put and call side. After that, you need to check the strike price with a maximum concentration of Open Interest or OI data. Once you input this data in the option chain analysis excel sheet, you will get the corresponding probability against each strike price. Thus the strike price with higher relative probability and maximum open interest or OI built up is a possibility during the current expiry. Normally, this option chain probability should be done in the 2nd or 3rd week of expiry month. It is not much reliable during expiry week.
