The price of gold: Chinese mining in Ghana documentary | Guardian Investigations

Ghana has had a gold rush but here, Afua Hirsch discovers how Chinese immigrants are profiting from industrialising the country's small-scale mining industry. She sees for herself that, for the many locals who chance losing life and limb for a piece of the same pie, the risks are rarely worth it, and explores where the responsibility for regulating this industry lies. South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines

10:37
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Poisoned By The Gold Rush

14:23
Gold is quickly becoming the new cocaine in Colombia. The precious metal is now the currency of choice for individuals and groups engaging in illicit trade in the South American country. That's because unlike cocaine, it's perfectly legal to carry gold, and unlike money, it's virtually untraceable. But there are some major side-effects of Colombia's new gold rush that locals are curiously quiet about: erectile dysfunction and brain damage. VICE News correspondent Monica Villamizar travelled to the Antioquia, Colombia, a hotbed of illegal gold mining, to investigate an unprecedented surge in impotence and neurological problems that experts are attributing to mercury, an essential gold-digging element. Environmental journalist Mike Anane has been investigating the effects of electronic waste in Ghana and to him the result is unequivocal: "total devastation", from stunted growth of children to cancer and chronic conditions. 500 container-loads of electronic waste arrive every month, often falsely declared as second-hand goods to overcome the problem of it being illegal to ship toxic e-waste without a permit. "They have no moral right to allow their waste to come in here", the director of Ghana's Environmental Agency says. The UN is moving slowly closer to banning toxic waste exports, yet for the local Ghanaians the nightmare will take generations to overcome. Illegal Diamond Trade Flourishes in Angola (1996)

05:21
Dirty Diamonds (1996): Angola boasts the most dangerous and illegal diamond mines in the world. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Synopsis: From an aerial view, hundreds of men dot the crater ridden landscape. In small groups, bare chested, knee deep in murky water, they sieve gravel for hours until they spot the glitter of one tiny diamond. In town, we interview an illegal trader who compares diamond dealing to the blood diamond trade in a warzone. He takes out a small paper package from his trouser leg and slowly unwraps a cluster of uncut jewels. He carries them to bribe his way out of any difficult situations. The De Beers diamond cartel is keen to stop the illegal diamond trade. A spokesman maintains that most of Angola's diamonds are smuggled out the country and are therefore denied to the people of Angola. We would like to develop a first class diamond field and build a proper mining operation. In this way the country can be further developed. Local mining companies depend on private security firms to guarantee their safety. While filming, bandits with grenade launchers and machine guns take our reporter by surprise. After much bargaining, she is finally allowed to leave the area. IronRidge snaps up rights for “highly prospective” gold licence in Côte d'Ivoire

05:06
IronRidge Resources Limited (LON:IRR) said it had secured access rights for a “highly prospective” gold licence application to the Zaranou project in Côte d'Ivoire. The exploration firm said multiple gold occurrences had been recorded over the project area, with eight high priority targets already identified. CEO Vincent Mascolo also tells Proactive London why the company has slated an Ordinary General Meeting for shareholders. Historical results for the Cote d'Ivoire prospect (in the late 1990s and 2008) included a result of 2.2 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold over 21 metres, including 5.7g/t over 5 metres, in a limited rotary air blast drilling program, while mining activity in the 1930s at the Yosso occurrence within the project had reported quartz vein zones between 2m to 60m thick, and over 300m in length with evidence of gold mineralisation extending 10m into pyritic schists either side of the veins and averaging 1.5g/t to 12g/t of gold.
State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!

15:39
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river "you need a permit to do that"...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie! This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING! In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts. UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college. Oregon Mining Law: Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law: "ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, "lawful mining operation" means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws. (2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally: (a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or (b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation. (3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]" Here is the GoPro camera I was using: http://amzn.to/19yYus6

Galamsey Operations in Kyebi Area part 4

00:56
In my previous article on illegal mining in Ghana, I focused on how foreigners especially Chinese have “bought” the local leaders to rob our nation of its resources and pride. Within some weeks after I wrote on the topic, the security officials and the government took a stern look at the practice and caused the arrest and deportation of many foreigners who were involved in mining without a license to operate. During a visit to commission a water project at Kyebi last year, President Mahama remarked, “…excuse me to say, Akyem Abuakwa has turned into the headquarters of galamsey in Ghana. I came here by air and if you see how the land is being destroyed, it saddens me.” The President later apologized on this statement. I strongly believe the Presidents apology was not necessary as it was and is a statement of fact. As a New Year dawns 2016, I decided to visit some of the towns and Villages specifically Afiasa and Apapam in the Kyebi Area in the Eastern region of Ghana. My expectations had been a reduced case of the destructions and menace of illegal mining activities in the region. It turned out ironically that “aluta continua”. Local men and women were busily excavating land and destroying forest and cocoa farms in search of Gold dusts. I do not intend to discuss the effects of illegal mining in this article but to urge us all to take responsibility of our environment because our natural resources is all we have. Gold and all minerals in Ghana are precious and need to be mined to support our weakly economic. Of course we cannot sit on Gold and diamond to east sand. Note that in Ghana we are blessed with the prospect of minerals on every part of our land. The question however is that shall we overcome the cost of extraction and damage to the environment on mining in particular place in a particular manner? Simply, is such illegal mining profitable when you consider the damage to the environment? Kofi Bonsu (actual name withheld) who works as a supervisor for a sponsor to a Galamsey operations remarked “Are you thinking of filling back land and planting trees? No way have you just taken your Gold and leave.” It is clear that there is no such thing as mining license and EPA Permits in their dictionary. This is how the Galamsey operations affect our natural resources. The Minerals Commission offers license to qualified and responsible mining companies in order to control and guide the operations of mining in the country. It also ensures compliance with Ghana's Mining and Mineral Laws and Regulation through effective monitoring. It is clear that the Mineral Commission is defunct in monitoring the activities of mining operations in Ghana. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Security Services of the country have their due responsibilities. What ought we to do as individuals. We all have a duty to protect our natural resources. If you have any complaints or suspicious of any mining activity undertaken in your community, Immediately inform the authorities or the Mineral Commissions on hotlines: 030 2771318, 030 2779823.

Mufti Kannada Dubbed Hindi Full Movie 2017 | ShivaRajkumar, SriiMurali |2018 Sandalwood Action Movie

02:24:18
Mufti is a 2017 Indian Kannada-language neo-noir action crime thriller film. The film tells the story of a police officer, played by Sriimurali, who tracks down and confronts an underworld boss, played by Shiva Rajkumar. At the cost of risking his life, an undercover cop Gana ventures into the big bad world of crime - a place called Ronapura, in search of a ruthless don Bhairati Ranagallu, actually peoples man taken over the place of don for justice. Let's just serve you the simple premise of the film on the platter. Mufti is a compelling story of a man Gana (Srimurli) who is an undercover policeman. The one man army or the lonely warrior Gana puts all his efforts, strenghts and power to achieve his objective. The crux of the previous line i.e. the objective of the character Gana is to capture the ruthless and fiery underworld mafia Bhairathi Ranagal. His mission is to collect evidence and arrest the underworld don Bhairathi Ranagal (Shiva Rajkumar) at the cost of risking his life. The noteworthy and idiosyncratic don Bhairathi Ranagal is the king of evil deeds. Now if we put the the character defenition of Bhairathi in simple words then he is the modern Robin Hood of the visual art with an healthy conjecture of various shades. The epic saga starts with the cinematic explanation of the villace Ranapura where the fiery don resides and rule. This is where our dynamic positive character of an undercover policeman Gana is influenced by the unexpected Grey shade character of the Bhairathi Ranagal. Bhairathi is the messiah of Ronapura which the major conflict plot point of this mainstream formula based experimental film. The plot point is dilemma, wiggling of thoughts, constant yet painful judgements leading to stressful decisions and the conclusion of these thoughts. Bhairathi Ranagal is a Mufti who choose his own way to provide happiness in the miserable lives of poor residents of Ronapura. The major shift in the life of Gana happens when he wish to see Bhairathi Ranagal once and actually this happen the day when Bhairathi have to visit the temple in the Ronapura village. But soon Gana realize that his master's life is in danger and the one man army Gana comes to rescue the dangerous situation. Because of this risk taking capability and unbeatable strength, Gana now becomes the right hand of the messiah of Ronapura Bhairathi Ranagal. Later, Gana learns that the local politician Raghuveer Bhandri (Devaraj) wants to kill Bhairathi because he wants to run Ronapura with brutal and corrupt bureaucracy. The story ends when Raghuveer comes to kill Bhairathi while Bhairathi was at the grave of his father. However, the one man army and alone fighter Gana comes to rescue Bhairathi again and kills all of them. Bhairathi was deeply influenced by Gana's work and dedication and hence he decides to surrender himself and accept all those charges on him. The Toxic Mining Law

While everyone is distracted by a certain orange presidential candidate, a river turned orange in Colorado. The Animas River disaster happened when contractors working for the EPA accidentally released a toxic stew from an old abandoned gold mine. Before we go and dismantle the EPA and eliminate government entirely, let’s take a look at why the deadly mining waste was there in the first place. You can see more at http://www.MarkFiore.com. Galamsey Operations in Kyebi Area part 2

00:28
History of Mine Safety and Health Legislation in the USA

09:02
In 1891, Congress passed the first federal statute governing mine safety. This 1891 law was relatively modest legislation that applied only to mines in U.S. territories, and, among other things, established minimum ventilation requirements at underground coal mines and prohibited operators from employing children under 12 years of age. In 1910, following a decade in which the number of coal mine fatalities exceeded 2,000 annually, Congress established the Bureau of Mines as a new agency in the Department of the Interior. The Bureau was charged with the responsibility to conduct research and to reduce accidents in the coal mining industry, but was given no inspection authority until 1941, when Congress empowered federal inspectors to enter mines. In 1947, Congress authorized the formulation of the first code of federal regulations for mine safety. The Federal Coal Mine Safety Act of 1952 provided for annual inspections in certain underground coal mines, and gave the Bureau limited enforcement authority, including power to issue violation notices and imminent danger withdrawal orders. In 1966, Congress extended coverage of the 1952 Coal Act to all underground coal mines. The first federal statute directly regulating non-coal mines did not appear until the passage of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966. The 1966 Act provided for the promulgation of standards, many of which were advisory, and for inspections and investigations; however, its enforcement authority was minimal. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, generally referred to as the Coal Act, was more comprehensive and more stringent than any previous Federal legislation governing the mining industry. The Coal Act included surface as well as underground coal mines within its scope, required two annual inspections of every surface coal mine and four at every underground coal mine, and dramatically increased federal enforcement powers in coal mines. The Coal Act also required monetary penalties for all violations, and established criminal penalties for knowing and willful violations. The safety standards for all coal mines were strengthened, and health standards were adopted. The Coal Act included specific procedures for the development of improved mandatory health and safety standards, and provided compensation for miners who were totally and permanently disabled by the progressive respiratory disease caused by the inhalation of fine coal dust pneumoconiosis or "black lung". Most recently, Congress passed the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Mine Act), the legislation which currently governs MSHA's activities. The Mine Act amended the 1969 Coal Act in a number of significant ways, and consolidated all federal health and safety regulations of the mining industry, coal as well as non-coal mining, under a single statutory scheme. The Mine Act strengthened and expanded the rights of miners, and enhanced the protection of miners from retaliation for exercising such rights. Mining fatalities dropped sharply under the Mine Act from 272 in 1977 to 86 in 2000. Additionally, the Mine Act established the independent Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission to provide for independent review of the majority of MSHA's enforcement actions. This was clipped from the 2002 MSHA video, Reflections Mining History, which shows the evolution of health and safety laws and the role of the supervisor. The entire DVD is 11 minutes in length and available from MSHA.

Fool´s Gold (Gold Mining in Costa Rica documentary)

29:50
Fool´s Gold (El Oro de los Tontos, 2011) is a 30-minute documentary produced by Costa Rican local activists and University professors, depicting an outrageous string of legal and political irregularities that almost allowed a Canadian Mining Company to destroy a rain forest system in Northern Costa Rica (the so-called "Crucitas Gold Mine"). In a last-minute decision, an Administrative Court revoked the mining permits, and instructed an investigation of Former President, and Nobel-Prize winner, Oscar Arias, who personally endorsed the project from its inception. This video also gained notoriety as two interviewed professors from the Universidad de Costa Rica were sued by the Company for a million dollars each!

What is GOLD LAUNDERING? What does GOLD LAUNDERING mean? GOLD LAUNDERING meaning & explanation

05:10
What is GOLD LAUNDERING? What does GOLD LAUNDERING mean? GOLD LAUNDERING meaning - GOLD LAUNDERING definition - GOLD LAUNDERING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Gold laundering is the process whereby illegally obtained gold is melted and recast into another form. The recasting is performed to obscure or conceal the true origin of the gold. The recast gold is then sold, thus laundering it into cash. It may also refer to a money laundering transaction in which the exchanged good is gold. There are several stages in the gold laundering process. The first is the acquisition of the gold, which may be from any combination of sources, at least one of which is illegal. This is then treated as scrap metal, melted, then cast into a mold. This results in a transportable ingot, gold bar or other bulk form bullion. In some cases, there is no gold involved in the laundering scheme. Colombia reported 70 tons of gold exports for 2012 despite production of only 15 tons. This is a result of fictitious gold exports filed with the Colombian customs agency by drug cartels in order to import "cash from international drug deals". Acquisition of the gold occurs in many forms. Small-scale gold mining operations, particularly those with no permits or licences, extract gold from areas unsuitable for large mining operations. Gold obtained in this fashion that is exported may not be traced or authenticated. This includes artisanal mines operated by few individuals, who then sell the gold to brokers. Another form of acquisition is theft. In the 1940s, Nazi Germany forcibly obtained the possessions of Jews, sometimes in collaboration with other parties. Most victims who died in death camps and Nazi concentration camps were robbed of all valuable property by the state, which was then sold or, in the case of bullion, sent to the Reichsbank. For example, in 1945 the Hungarian Gold Train was established to transport the property of Hungarian Jews to Berlin. Once the Jews had been deported to German concentration camps, the valuables were sorted into categories such that their owners could no longer be identified. In the late 1930s and throughout World War II, Germany would increase its unofficial gold reserves by expropriating gold from foreign governments, including $223m from Belgium and $193m from the Netherlands. Some of the Nazi gold was exchanged for cash, and some deposited in financial institutions, including $316 million of the looted gold at the Swiss National Bank. Of the nearly 100 tons of gold laundered through Swiss banks, only 4 tons was returned. The Banco de Portugal, the central bank of Portugal, would regularly purchase Nazi gold held at the Swiss National Bank, according to a 1944 document from the American Overseas Special Services. The scrap gold is then sold by brokers to smelters or refiners, who heat the gold to at least 1,064 °C (1,947 °F), its melting point. This may include gold from numerous sources, including recycled and newly mined gold. Once melted, it may be purified by parting, which separates out silver impurities, and the Miller process or Wohlwill process, depending on the desired level of purity and scale of operation. Once refined, it is cast into a transportable form for further processing. Gold fingerprinting, that is identifying a particular source of gold based on its impurities or trace elements, may be possible if the impurities have not been removed via refining. To prevent laundering of gold and other metals (such as tantalum, tin, and tungsten), some nations have established systems and regulations. For example, Rwanda introduced regulations for mineral trade that requires all ore extraction be tagged, in part a response to the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act in the United States that requires companies to disclose the use of conflict minerals by publishing a supply chain audit. However, with only 100 government monitors overseeing 450 mining sites during typical business hours, smuggling still occurs, exacerbated by corrupt monitors illegally selling tags or failing to record transactions in logbooks. In 2013, Ghanaian president John Dramani Mahama announced that the government of Ghana would establish a task force to regulate the small-scale mining sector. This was to ensure that gold produced in small-scale mines could be authenticated, and also to eliminate the use of heavy machinery that had become prevalent on such sites, which have had caused environmental damage.

We Call Them Intruders: A Documentary about Canadian Mining in Africa

03:41
How well do you know your money? Two Vancouver-based filmmakers trace their investments to Canadian mines in Eastern and Southern Africa. If you live and work in Canada, chances are you’re connected to Canadian mining companies whether you know it or not through your savings, taxes, Canada Pension Plan contributions, RRSPs and other investments. "We Call Them Intruders" (previously titled "Plenty's Paradox") is a documentary that travels from Canada to Africa and back again to unearth the stories behind some of the continent’s largest Canadian-owned mining projects. The film brings viewers on a journey, taking a hard look at why communities, governments and corporations are so often pitted against each other in an explosive battle over extracting the earth’s riches.
