11.17.2012. Here's some scenes from the road, the old Vulture Mine in Wickenburg AZ. It's pretty much looks like an old west mining ghost town. This is high definition [HD] video footage for Youtube. I did a little gold nugget metal detecting in areas that weren't off limits. Wickenburg seems mostly a tourist town, not much prospecting going on today. Peace, Mark Allen Channel (4GUESTS.COM)

This location exercises a camera's control of aliasing, morie, and chromatic aberration. On different weekends, a Canon EOS 7D, Panasonic HDC-TM700 and Panasonic DMC-GH2 were used to shoot three separate projects. This is the Panasonic DMC-GH2 result. The GH2 suffered little of the aliasing and morie of the 7D, and none of the TM700 chromatic aberration. One of finest true ghost towns in the American West, Vulture City grew up around the mine discovered by Henry Wickenburg. Twelve miles southwest of the city that now bears Wickenburg's name, the Vulture Mine and Vulture City once had a population of almost 5,000 souls. Its history was marked by violence and tragedy. Eighteen of Vulture City's former residents swung to eternity at the end of a hangman's noose dangling from the branches of the ancient ironwood tree that still thrives next to the ruins of Henry Wickenburg's old cabin. More died in robberies or through many other acts of terminal lawlessness. A few of those souls are said to haunt the many buildings of the decaying town. The Texas Queen Mine, located in the Vulture Mining district, just outside of Wickenburg, Arizona, is reported to be a fluorine/fluorite mine. Upon inspection, our surveyors disputed this fact, siting that the waste dumps and general trends of the area had no indications of fluorite. There was much oxidized iron in the waste dumps and there were two main shafts instead of only one shaft, as historically reported.

The Verde Combination claim is set in the high hills adjacent to the historic mining town of Jerome, Arizona. Much of Jerome and the surrounding mines is and has been private for many, many years. The area is known for its deposits of copper, silver, gold and lead. The Verde Combination was so named for the Verde Combination company who originally located the mines.

This is our first experience running the 151 on the claim near Wickenburg, AZ. Installed a new riffle cloth and was a bit concerned how it would work as I had never done it before. Happy with the results so far and it seems to work ok at catching the fine as well as larger flakes. Sorry I did not video the clean up, but will try to get that done on the next vid. We run the cons from the drywasher through a reverse helix trommel to reduce to amount of time required to recover the gold, if any. A very expensive clean up tool, but we also use it when it is too wet to dry wash in AZ. I made a short video of the trommel in operation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlCI_HKTaMs I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor)

The Vulture Mine ... prospector Henry Wickenburg came to Arizona from Austria in 1862 and discovered a promising outcropping of gold quartz a year later. Further investigation proved him right - he had indeed discovered a rich deposit. Two stories address his naming the claim the Vulture. One suggests he found the quartz while retrieving a buzzard he shot. Since there is no great purpose to wasting ammunition on a buzzard (unless it sees you as a prospective meal), this probably is not an accurate accounting. A second, more plausible, version is that on the day Henry Wickenburg made his discovery, he saw several of the big birds circling the mountain now known as Vulture Peak. As one of Arizona's richest gold mines, the Vulture became an important supplier of bullion for the Union cause during the Civil War. Henry Wickenburg was not a "hard rock" miner. Instead of doing the work, he contracted others to do the mining and milling, keeping a flat $15 per ton for himself. In 1866 Benjamin Phelps purchased an 80-percent interest in the mine, but, according to one account, never paid Wickenburg the total agreed-upon price. Wickenburg, who preferred other pursuits to begin with, left mining and tried the cattle business. His Wickenburg Ranch established the place-name for the town that bears his name. In the first six years of Phelps' mining operation, more than $2.5 million in gold was "officially" extracted. Unofficially, the total was believed to have been far higher: An estimated 20 percent to 40 percent of the ore is believed to have been "high-graded" (stolen) by the miners who worked there. One account says 18 of the high-graders were hanged. James Seymour purchased the mine in 1878, despite popular sentiment that the veins had played out. Seymour's instincts were right. The Vulture came back to life with such vigor that Seymour added a stamp mill along the Hassayampa River, about 12 miles from the mine. He named the community that formed around the stamp mill after himself. Then, in 1880, the mill was dismantled, moved to the Vulture to furnish parts for a new mill, and the town of Seymour died. The Vulture thrived well into the 1890s. The town featured a large stone assay office, miners' dormitories, houses for company officials, a mess hall, a school, a post office, and an 80-stamp mill. The post office closed in 1897, although production continued on a diminished scale through the 1920s. In fact, it was not until 1942, when President Roosevelt's Executive Order 208 banned mining of non-strategic material during World War II, that production ceased.

The Vulture Mine Preservation & Restoration Association (VMPRA) is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and sharing the Vulture gold mine's legacy and its importance to the development of Arizona and the Western United States. This video gives a brief history of the Vulture mine near Wickenburg Arizona. It makes the case for the value of the Vulture Mine site and need to save the buildings from deteriorating to a point where they are lost forever.
