The Grateful Dead - Ripple (Studio Version)

04:14
Link to the picture: http://thingstolookathigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/alice-in-wonderland-trippy.png Robert Hunter, wrote this song in 1970 in London in the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly also drinking an entire bottle of retsina in the process). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Like many folk songs, "Ripple" addresses itself as a song and an instrument of the performers' emotional expression. Several lines throughout the song echo the 23rd Psalm of the Bible. Trip hard and good, motherfuckers.

Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station

16:21
Lyrics: Lady With A Fan" Let my inspiration flow in token lines suggesting rhythm that will not forsake me till my tale is told and done While the firelight's aglow strange shadows in the flames will grow till things we've never seen will seem familiar Shadows of a sailor forming winds both foul and fair all swarm down in Carlisle he loved a lady many years ago Here beside him stands a man a soldier by the looks of him who came through many fights but lost at love While the storyteller speaks a door within the fire creaks suddenly flies open and a girl is standing there Eyes alight with glowing hair all that fancy paints as fair she takes her fan and throws it in the lion's den "Which of you to gain me, tell will risk uncertain pains of Hell? I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance" The sailor gave at least a try the soldier being much too wise strategy was his strength and not disaster The sailor coming out again the lady fairly lept at him that's how it stands today you decide if he was wise The storyteller makes no choice soon you will not hear his voice his job is to shed light and not to master Since the end is never told we pay the teller off in gold in hopes he will come back but he cannot be bought or sold Terrapin Station" Inspiration, move me brightly light the song with sense and color, hold away despair More than this I will not ask faced with mysteries dark and vast statements just seem vain at last some rise, some fall, some climb to get to Terrapin Counting stars by candlelight all are dim but one is bright: the spiral light of Venus rising first and shining best, From the northwest corner of a brand-new crescent moon crickets and cicadas sing a rare and different tune Terrapin Station in the shadow of the moon Terrapin Station and I know we'll be there soon Terrapin - I can't figure out Terrapin - if it's an end or the beginning Terrapin - but the train's got its brakes on and the whistle is screaming: TERRAPIN At A Siding" While you were gone these spaces filled with darkness The obvious was hidden With nothing to believe in the compass always points to Terrapin The sullen wings of fortune beat like rain You're back in Terrapin for good or ill again For good or ill again

Grateful Dead - Truckin'

05:09
Grateful Dead - Truckin' Garcia;Lesh;Weir;Hunter Lyrics:Truckin got my chips cashed in. keep truckin, like the do-dah man Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin on. Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on main street. Chicago, new york, detroit and its all on the same street. Your typical city involved in a typical daydream Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings. Dallas, got a soft machine; houston, too close to new orleans; New yorks got the ways and means; but just wont let you be, oh no. Most of the cast that you meet on the streets speak of true love, Most of the time theyre sittin and cryin at home. One of these days they know they better get goin Out of the door and down on the streets all alone. Truckin, like the do-dah man. once told me youve got to play your hand Sometimes your cards aint worth a dime, if you dont layem down, Sometimes the lights all shinin on me; Other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip its been. What in the world ever became of sweet jane? She lost her sparkle, you know she isnt the same Livin on reds, vitamin c, and cocaine, All a friend can say is aint it a shame? Truckin, up to buffalo. been thinkin, you got to mellow slow Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin on. Sittin and starin out of the hotel window. Got a tip theyre gonna kick the door in again Id like to get some sleep before I travel, But if you got a warrant, I guess youre gonna come in. Busted, down on bourbon street, set up, like a bowlin pin. Knocked down, it gets to wearin thin. they just wont let you be, oh no. Youre sick of hangin around and youd like to travel; Get tired of travelin and you want to settle down. I guess they cant revoke your soul for tryin, Get out of the door and light out and look all around. Sometimes the lights all shinin on me; Other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip its been. Truckin, Im a goin home. whoa whoa baby, back where I belong, Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin on. Hey now get back truckin home.

Grateful Dead Truckin' Live 1972

05:44
Dedicated to Deadheads everywhere, Grateful Dead performs Truckin' in high-def live at Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark on April 17, 1972. The classic Grateful Dead line-up is Bob Weir - rhythm guitar/lead vocals, Jerry Garcia - lead guitar/backing vocals, Phil Lesh - bass/backing vocals, Bill Kreutzmann - drums, Mickey Hart - drums and Howard Wales - organ. From the Grateful Dead 1970 album American Beauty, Truckin' was written by band members Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and lyricist Robert Hunter. United States Library of Congress recognized Truckin' as a national treasure in 1997. Peaking at only 64 on the US Pop Singles chart in 1971, Truckin' was the second highest-charting single the Grateful Dead would have. Heavy rotation on progressive rock and AOR radio stations helped popularize the San Francisco-based rock group to a wider audience.

Grateful Dead - Me and My Uncle

03:05
Lyrics: Me and my uncle went ridin' down, South colorado, west texas bound. We stopped over in santa fe, That bein' the point just about half way, And you know it was the hottest part of the day. I took the horses up to the stall, Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all. Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt, It bein' summer, I took off my shirt, And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt. When texas cowboys, they's all around, With liquor and money, they loaded down. So soon after payday, know it seemed a shame; You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game, High-low jack and the winner take the hand. My uncle starts winnin'; cowboys got sore. One of them called him, and then two more, Accused him of cheatin'; oh no, it couldn't be. I know my uncle, he's as honest as me, And I'm as honest as a gamblin' man can be. One of them cowboys, he starts to draw, And I shot him down, lord he never saw. Well I grabbed a bottle, cracked him in the jaw, Shot me another, oh damn he won't grow old. In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold, And we high-tailed it down to mexico. I love those cowboys, I love their gold, I loved my uncle, God rest his soul, Taught me good, lord, taught me all I know Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road.

Grateful Dead - St. Stephen

04:28
Garcia,Lesh,Hunter Lyrics: Saint stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes, Country garden in the wind and the rain, Wherever he goes the people all complain. Stephen prospered in his time, well he may and he may decline. Did it matter, does it now? stephen would answer if he only knew how. Wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to hell, Hell halfway twixt now and then, Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again. Lady finger, dipped in moonlight, writing what for? across the morning sky. Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer, darkness shrugs and bids the day good-bye. Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow, What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned. Several seasons with their treasons, Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own. Did he doubt or did he try? answers aplenty in the bye and bye, Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills, One man gathers what another man spills. Saint stephen will remain, all hes lost he shall regain, Seashore washed by the suds and foam, Been here so long, hes got to calling it home. Fortune comes a crawlin, calliope woman, spinnin that curious sense of your own. Can you answer? yes I can. but what would be the answer to the answer man?

Grateful Dead - Friend of The Devil

03:24
Garcia,Dawson,Hunter Lyrics: I lit out from reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds Didnt get to sleep last night till the morning came around. Set out runnin but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills I spent the night in utah in a cave up in the hills. Set out runnin but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air. Set out runnin but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night, The first ones named sweet anne marie, and shes my hearts delight. The second one is prison, babe, the sheriffs on my trail, And if he catches up with me, Ill spend my life in jail. Got a wife in chino, babe, and one in cherokee The first one says shes got my child, but it dont look like me. Set out runnin but I take my time, A friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

U.S. Blues by the Grateful Dead from their 1974 studio album, The Grateful Dead From The Mars Hotel. The first part of the video is a short film I found called "200." I put the rest at the end together. Happy 4th of July, my friends! ~Sara
