Qanda - Balance of power
Monday 30 May, 2016 Audience: Coalition 45%, ALP 35%, Greens 12%, Other 8% Discuss the Questions Here are the questions our panel faced this week. Tell us what your answer would be or what you think our panellists need to say. RISK AVERSE POLITICIANS DONNA BYRNE asked: When I first voted there were federal politicians like Bob Hawke and Malcolm Fraser, and in Queensland Joh Bljeke Petersen and Tom Burns - you might not have liked them but they told you what they thought, they made mistakes and we all moved on. Now politicians have image consultants, media training, speech writers, media advisors and chiefs of staff. Now they are so worried about making a mistake that they won’t even have a genuine leader’s debate. How are we going to get real people to represent and tell to us what they really think when most of our politicians come through the party system and are so risk averse? WORKING POOR RICK JOSEPH asked: I applaud the drive for jobs and growth, but what will be done to help the working poor of this country? Families are struggling from pay cheque to pay cheque with ever increasing prices for electricity, food, rent. The decision to feed your family or attend to medical issues is a constant battle, let alone striving to save enough to have a house of their own. Put yourself in the shoes of these people and actually think - what it is like to have a single constant thought in your mind “how am I going to make ends meet”, not just from the moment you wake up, but during the night because you can’t sleep because you are sick with worry. Please stop and actually think what that might feel like. What are you doing to fix this? PENALTY RATES – CHEF David Carter asked: I've worked as a chef for over 17 years. The Productivity Commission recommended a cut in Sunday penalty rates for people like me in the hospitality industry, but hospitality workers are some of the lowest paid workers in Australia. Steve Ciobo: Why are Sundays more important for those who work in other industries than those who work in hospitality? I give up my weekends to serve others too! PENALTIES COST JOBS RYAN WEBB asked: A recent study by Restaurant and Catering Australia has found that unifying penalty rates across Saturday and Sunday’s could create 40,000 across new jobs in Australia, with almost 9,000 right here in Queensland. With youth unemployment at 13.5% nationally and peaking at well over 20% in regional areas, it’s clear that double-time rates on Sundays are locking tens of thousands of young Australians out of the workforce. If we’re serious about creating jobs and opportunity, wouldn’t ending Sunday penalty rates be a great place to start? PUT MINOR PARTIES LAST? HARRY SPICER asked: My question is for all the cross benchers. Given that you put a gun to the Gillard governments head which resulted in horrendous policy outcomes for Australia, and given that you've now spent the last 3 years being openly hostile to any reform in the senate, as well as regularly being patently unreasonable in negotiations, arguably holding our very democracy to your self interest, why should Australians ever consider putting you above dead last on their ballot papers? HUNG PARLIAMENT PATRICIA BALCHIN asked: In the event of a hung Parliament which party would you choose and who do you think would make the better Prime Minister ? GREENS & PREFERENCE DEALS HANNAH TAYLOR asked: There has been ongoing discussion of preference deals between the Liberals and the Greens in a mutual attempt to undercut Labor seats. Wouldn't any such preference deal, whether formal or informal, be a complete betrayal of the values of both of your parties? TRICKLE DOWN TAX CUTS? NATHAN SCHOLZ asked: Steven Ciobo: My wife and I own a small business, a coffee shop here in Brisbane. The proposed corporate tax cut means we will get an extra $8 a week next year. Given it means everyone in this room, including potential customers, will have to pay more for them and their families to go to the GP, couldn't we cut out the middle man? You keep the $8 and protect bulk billing so my customers will have more money to spend in my shop? QUEENSLAND GHOST TOWNS KRISTY HARLING asked: I have lived in Central Queensland which encompasses towns such as Emerald, Blackwater & Moranbah for a number of years, working in the local mining industry. Today, we see the aftermath of the mining boom after 21,000 jobs have been lost in the region. It breaks my heart, to see local families struggling to put food on the table & to see hundreds of houses empty because of foreclosure with no one to fill them. The people

56th Annual South Filmfare Awards
The stars bade goodbye to the skies for a few hours to descend on Hyderabad on Friday evening. With sizzling performances from top actresses providing a treat to the audience and a galaxy of stars from throughout the country present, the Black Lady was clutched, petted and flattered to the fullest. The crème de la crème of tinsel town was present at the 56th Idea Filmfare Awards 2008 — South. With top celebrities for company, the audience was in for a night of scintillating dance numbers and awards galore, and of course, star-gazing! Vaaranam Aayiram (VA) and Subramanipuram — two films that shook the Kollywood BO last year — were aptly awarded on stage. While Subramanipuram won the Best Film and its director Sasikumar awarded the Best Directors Award, Suriya-starrer Vaaranam Aayiram almost swept the music category. Receiving the Best Actor Award, Suriya said, This is as much Gauthams award as it is mine. It was no ordinary task — to play two different roles — and VA was not an ordinary film at all. Doing the film and receiving this award is a very special feeling. A couple of minutes later, even as the crowd cheered, the actor raised his Black Lady and said, Jo, this is for you, to which the Mozhi actress gave an Im-so-proud-of-you smile. He went on to add, I see this award as a blessing from Kamal sir. Im a big fan of his and Im sure hes watching my progress. I did two characters in VA, which in itself was a big task. Just imagine a man playing 10 characters in a single film! Only Kamal can do that. The pretty Jothika earlier went on stage to give away the Best Actor (Female) Award to Parvathi of Poo fame. Holding the Black Lady with pride, Parvathi said, Im being compared to Jo... something that I dont agree with! Im honoured to be standing on this big stage. I did the things I like in front of the camera for Poo and I got an award for that! Also, Shailesh Goyal, president, Real Estate, Gitanjali Group, presented the Best Supporting Actor (Female) award in Kannada to Shubha Poonja. Serving as a breather between awards were the performances, which set the stage on fire. While Sneha moved gracefully for slow songs, Mumaith Khan got the crowd on their feet with peppy numbers. Genelia — whose performance was among the last — proved that she could shake a leg as well as any of her contemporaries. Sasikumar, who has achieved a hat-trick of sorts by hitting the bulls eye in acting, producing and directing, received tremendous applause for his work in Subramanipuram. Getting this award from Ileana is very special, he said with a wink, I dedicate this award to my gurus — Bala and Ameer. Let my success be attributed to them and my failures attributed to me alone. There were some who went down memory lane on receiving the award. One of them was Radha Krishna, who received the Best Director (Telugu) for his film Gamyam. I went with this script to a lot of people but no one accepted it. Finally, my dad gave me Rs 2.5 crores and asked me to go ahead with the film, he reminisced, I dedicate this award to all aspiring directors who have a lot of scripts. It was a night when glitz and glamour fought for attention. And, it was a night that the celebrities and the audience will remember for a long time to come. While the title for the gala event was sponsored by Idea Cellular Ltd, Zandu Balm and Santoor were the associate sponsors for the event. Sun TV Network was the official telecast partner for the event, which was also supported by Radio Mirchi. Others who partnered the event were Hyderabad International Convention Centre for hospitality, Gitanjali Lifestyle, Whyte & Mackay, Fantasie Chocolates for gifts, Orienta Cine Advertising — multiplex partner, Prakash Media Corp —outdoor publicity, Spice Jet — travel partner and magazine partner — Hello. The event was managed by 360 Degrees Experience, while the event consultants were Oxygen Entertainment.

Work Alternatives Beyond Traditional "Jobs"
Carleen MacKay, Mature Workforce Expert Excerpt from the Make Work 'Work' For You at 50+ Symposium, August 2014
Australian Manufacturing: History leading to future strategy.
Around 30 years ago, Australian policymakers decided to gradually demolish long time tariff barriers that favoured domestic manufacturers and open up the economy to international competition. Overnight, Australia became a champion of free trade, encouraging its trading partners to do the same. Many traditional labour intensive manufacturing industries quickly disappeared and the economy went through a major restructure. While many businesses either closed their doors or went offshore the steel and motor car industries were deemed to be of national importance and a range of initiatives were taken to keep them going. Graham Spurling has had a close association with the car industry through these turbulent times. He is optimistic that manufacturing has a place in the Australian economy. He dismisses the claims of the economic rationalists, the view that Australia “just can’t compete”, as being naïve and lacking an understanding of what can be achieved if all players work collaboratively towards a common goal. He sees the impending submarine project as offering a once in a lifetime opportunity for local manufacturers to become involved and make a quantum leap into new technology and work practices. He warns that for many of the stakeholders this will involve a paradigm shift in thinking with the need for labour, business, and government to form a partnership to bring the project in on time, and on budget. Graham points out that the rewards are not simply measured in number of jobs created or profits generated. The benefits are shared across the community in terms of the opportunity for our young people to learn, create, and take on exacting tasks. It contributes to creating a community where knowledge and cleverness is championed.
Controversial Renewable Energy contracts signed
The signing of 20 - year contracts for 27 private producers of Renewable Energy to supply electricity to Eskom has finally happened. Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe signed the contracts at his offices in Centurion today after NUMSA - together with other interest groups in the coal industry- recently tried to block the signing in court but failed. NUMSA argues that bringing in Independent Power Producers into Eskom will lead to thousands of job losses in coal mining, devastate coal mining towns of Mpumalanga and cause thousands of Eskom employees to lose their jobs as well.
