Vocation Training to Drop-Out Youths in Rajasthan by Vedanta Hindustan ZInc

09:48
Vedanta Hindustan Zinc, in association with Government of India and other NGOs has introduced a state level youth training program in Rajasthan at Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara and Rajsamand distrcts. The program aims to provide employment by analyzing the potential & preference of rural youth and accordingly give professional training to them. It is known fact, more than 50 % India's population is below the age group of 25 years of age. Unemployment is among the serious problem in India and even more serious among rural youth, quite a few among whom are educated. It is important to address the population of unemployed drop-out rural youths to make them self-reliant rather than dependent. Drop outs youths in Rajasthan particularly with rural background are deficient in command over languages, communication and confidence in facing interviews and also have limited access to information about job opportunities available. Some inter-mediation is needed for grooming these people for the job opportunities. This can be done better in public private participation mode through the intervention of big corporates like Hindustan Zinc who by way of this initiative has not only opened different avenues for the rural youth but has also mitigated the migration.

Dr. Rima Habib, 2017 International Health and Safety Award, OHS Section, APHA

04:33
Rima Habib, PhD, MPH, MOHS, of the American University of Beirut, received the 2017 International Health and Safety Award from the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA). This award recognizes individuals with outstanding achievement in the field of occupational health and safety outside the U.S. Dr. Habib is Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Environmental Health in the School of Health Sciences. Over her near 20 year career, she has challenged colleagues, government officials, and NGO’s to recognize and pursue social justice approaches to environmental and occupational research and public-health practice. Dr. Habib’s attention is focused on health disparities for marginalized workers and unrecognized labor in Lebanon and the larger Arab region. Her work extends outside traditional boundaries by investigations of the work environment and gender. Dr. Habib is one of the pioneers in exploring women’s work in the household with housing conditions. She’s developed innovative and cultural appropriate approaches for policy makers to recognize women's domestic labor and its impact on individual and community health. In Dr. Habib’s research on migrant agricultural workers, she pursued new lines of inquiry about gender in farmworker populations. Her research has provoked new advocacy on behalf of farm workers and agricultural communities in Lebanon. This includes her support for the rights of these workers to basic labor protections, as well as broader state recognition and support of marginalized worker populations. Dr. Habib has also been engaged in health research and advocacy on behalf of Lebanon’s refugee communities to compel public and policy attention on the relationship between levels of social and economic deprivation and a cascade of morbidities. As nationalism and the vilification of refugees continues to intensify, Dr. Habib’s research and advocacy to vulnerable worker populations is particularly essential. Its relevance is obvious to workers in Lebanon but is also contributing to broader regional and global debates on development policies, geopolitics, and health. Every year, the OHS Section presents four award at the APHA Annual Meeting. These awards are granted to highly deserving individuals or organizations that provide tireless advocacy for the health and safety of workers in the U.S. and internationally. The OHS Section is involved in preventing work-related injuries, illnesses, disabilities and deaths through research, training, treatment, advocacy and policymaking. The OHS Section is one of the oldest within APHA, advocating for the health, safety and well-being of workers, families, communities and the environment since 1914. The OHS Section provides leadership and expertise on occupational health matters, recognizing the intrinsic link between the work environment and the health and safety of families, communities and the environment at large.

The Ship Breakers of Bangladesh: VICE INTL

10:14
There aren't too many places left in the world where the practice of ship breaking—scrapping old ships for metal—can still exist. These days, environmental and labor regulations in the developed world have displaced the practice to India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, where cargo carriers are salvaged for their steel. The largest vessels wind up on the shores of the city of Chittagong in Bangladesh, where the industry has become a vital part of the country's urbanization. It employs roughly 200,000 workers and supplies the country with 80 percent of its steel. Ship breakers beach and dismantle vessels daily wearing flip-flops and T-shirts. It's no easy task, considering ships are constructed to withstand the elements for the 30 years they spend operating on international waters. We decided to check it out. Tyre hosts global open day for women, peace and security in south Lebanon

01:54
In the lead-up to a recent global open day on Women, Peace and Security, UNIFIL’s gender unit held three preparatory meetings in Tyre, Bint Jbeil, and Marjayoun in south Lebanon to use the participation of women to further peace and security. Women’s civil society organizations in south Lebanon – called the Gender Working Group – attended the meetings and provided suggestions on how to further strengthen Lebanon’s National Action Plan for the Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325. “That resolution calls for women’s complete participation in decision making in relation to conflict resolution and peace building,” said Dr. Afaf Omer, UNIFIL Gender Advisor at the wrap-up event in Tyre on April 27. The recommendations suggested by the women in the preparatory days were presented to UNIFIL’s Head of Mission and Force Commander Michael Beary at the public event. “We look forward to the choice of peace and safety in our society,” Hadiyeh Abdullah of the Tyre Women’s Affairs Association told the Force Commander. “That is why we emphasize the need for women in all fields and aspects.” After listening to the recommendations from all three districts, Major General Beary thanked the women for sharing their views on Lebanon’s National Action Plan for the implementation of 1325, noting its importance in helping to further peace and security. Background: The Global Open Days on Women, Peace and Security are organized in conflict-affected areas all over the world. These days are designed to enable direct dialogue between women’s peacebuilding organizations and women community leaders, and senior UN representation at the country level. The purpose is to seek women’s views on means of improving the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (SCR) 1325 in their areas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Article: Aoibheann O’Sullivan Video camera: Mohamad Hamze & Aoibheann O’Sullivan Video Edit: Aoibheann O’Sullivan, Suzane Badereddine & Mohamad Hamze Translations: Hiba Monzer & Adib Al-Moussa Video Music: Running Waters by Jason Shaw Stills: Suzane Badereddine --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age

02:08:21
The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-04-14 - For the first time in recent memory, the CEOs of America's top two coal mining companies, and a leading international company, came to Capitol Hill to answer questions on their positions on climate change, clean energy policy, and the challenges that face their industry. "Just as our national energy policy is at a crossroads, so, too, is the coal industry," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the committee that hosted the CEOs. "Whether it's climate science, the viability of 'clean coal,' or safety concerns, I believe Congress requires answers from the coal industry on their ability to be a part of our clean energy future." As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of mountaintop mining. TESTIMONY: Gregory Boyce, President and Chief Executive Officer, Peabody Energy Corporation; Steven F. Leer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Coal, Inc.; Preston Chiaro, Chief Executive for Energy and Minerals, Rio Tinto; Michael Carey, President, Ohio Coal Association. Port Waratah Coal Services - Members Take Action

08:05
Maritime Union of Australia members are poised to launch protected industrial action against Rio Tinto's subsidiary Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) in Newcastle after an impasse in negotiation because of the company's strident anti-union posture. Workers at Kooragang Island and Carrington have voted on the motion to take protected industrial action against PWCS, which has achieved strong support from the workers. "Rio Tinto and PWCS need to understand that Australia is not Bangladesh," said Ian Bray, the assistant secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia. "In Australia, we have standards established over many years to make sure workers' have a voice, a decent standard of living and, most important, a safety and health regime so their life and limbs are safeguarded." PWCS' anti-union proposals are seeking to undermine the safety and health of workers, tear up long-standing settlement procedure of contract issues, and radically change the scope of matters that can be arbitrated. Newcastle Branch Secretary Glen Williams "PWCS management is poisoning a long history of mutually beneficial good relations with its aggressive anti-worker, anti-union approach," said MUA Newcastle Branch Secretary Glen Williams. "It's trying to stick it to workers at every turn, refusing our reasonable claim that sick or injured workers should have a right to leave without pay and salary continuance insurance to deal with their illness. It just shows the PWCS - Rio attitude that workers are expendable parts." "PWCS has even gone so far as to try to remove the dispute procedure clause that has been in the agreement for many years which would allow PWCS do as it pleases even if a dispute resolution procedure is underway," added Williams. Talks between union members and PWCS have seen more than eight months of negotiations. The single bargaining unit representing workers comprises the Maritime Union of Australia, the Transport Workers Union, the Electrical Trade Union, and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union. Mick Forbes, Branch Secretary of the Transport Workers' Union, Newcastle Branch, said the problem was that PWCS management was not willing to bargain in good faith. "PWCS is playing hardball -- they won't move on job security and proposed changes to the contractor's clause makes our members very nervous about what the company's real intentions are," Mr Forbes said. "We have enjoyed a long period of industrial harmony at PWCS through generations of enterprise bargaining agreements that continue to benefit both parties." "During the time PWCS has operated the coal loaders, we have seen a cooperative and consultative approach to industrial relations that has allowed PWCS to become the biggest bulk handling facility in the world. This has not happened by accident and our members are as much a part of the success of the company as management," Forbes added. Daniel Wallace, AMWU Organiser said: "This is union busting 101 and our members are determined that a few industrial relations extremists, who have been appointed to positions within the management of PWCS, will not destroy the flexibility and industrial harmony we have all worked so hard to achieve over many years." "PWCS are showing absolute contempt for their workforce and they need to come to the table ready to resolve these negotiations as matter of urgency," ETU organiser Russell Wilson said. "They have openly said that they will train non-skilled employees who do not have the requisite safety skills to do the job while industrial action is underway. They are determined to undermine their workers," Wilson added. In July last year, Glen Williams wrote to NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner seeking an independent report about the cause of a cancer cluster at Kooragang Island. The MUA is still awaiting a response to the letter but it is understood that Hunter Valley Area Health Service is providing an interim report to the Minister. Made in Germany | Peru -- The Mining Boom

05:19
German industry has increased its stake in the mining industry in South America. Peru is currently in the limelight. The nation is one of the largest producers worldwide for copper, silver, gold and zinc. Germany hopes to replace the US as the main supplier of machinery. The German embassy in Peru organises visits to mines for German businessmen and has set up a technological association of German companies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- It is shortly after sunrise and time to head for the Andes. Dieter Lamle is the business attaché at the German embassy in Lima. He has 25 members of staff from German companies with him. Most of them are Peruvians representing BASF, Mercedes as well as a large number of middle sized companies. They have come together to size up their business opportunities in the mining industry and have travelled to the remote mountain region of Alto Chicama in Northern Peru. Dieter Lamle: "The mines are very focused on the US. They want US products, they buy US products - they're up there at an altitude of 4000 metres, looking into the distance and seeing only the US...and they don't realise we exist. That is why we are going to the mine to make them aware of German technology and break into this US monopoly that is shared a bit by South Africa, Canada and Switzerland but not Germany." No easy undertaking when you are headed for 4200 metres above sea level. The scenery is pretty spectacular, but no one really notices at this altitude - where there's very little oxygen in the atmosphere. Exhaustion is getting to most of the members of the expedition. After five hours negotiating pot holes, they arrive at the Lagunas Norte Mine. It is run by the Canadian company Barrick, one of the leading names in the mining industry and especially interesting for the German suppliers. But before they can start their sales pitch they need to undergo a health check. Dieter Lamle and many others need an added supply of oxygen. This helps relieve the typical symptoms of altitude sickness, headaches and dizzyness. Now the diplomat can finally start the ball rolling....in fluent Spanish. He explains to the Barrick managers that they have come to open doors and make personal contacts. The Canadians are positively surprised by the Germans' direct approach: Hugo Roman Venero, Barrick Mine Manager: "So many companies in one go...that's something new to us but I think it's a good idea. I am also surprised by the technology the German companies have on offer. We'll be taking a close look and comparing it to the competitors." The company reps carry on the sales talk while Lamle explores the mine. This is where gold is mined. A sudden change in the weather. Time to sound the red alert. Dieter Lamle explains the situation: "We have a strong storm and that means we have red alert...nobody is allowed to leave their car or the building they are in...there were three fatalaties in Caja Marca recently and that is why the security measures must be followed exactly." The storm passes and we can carry on filming. The Lagunas Norte Mine is just one of many new finds in Peru. The mining industry is booming throughout the country. Most of them are run by US or Canadian companies who buy their machinery and the other equipment back home...although, says Lamle, German technology is more environmentally friendly and more efficient. Time for lunch - fillet of beef at 4200 metres above sea level. A relaxed atmosphere as brochures and calling cards are exchanged across the table. But so far no contracts have been signed. Dieter Lamle: "The work is just beginning for the companies. For my part this job ends this evening and I can plan the next trip. But they have to write emails, make phone calls and make appointments to come back next week. They need to meet up with Barrick's representative in Lima and strike while the iron is hot." The delegation rounds off their visit for a song written especially in praise of the mine workers. So they have managed to outdo their US competitors...if only in song.

Our Safety, Our Voice (By the Children, For the Children, Of the Children) Kannada Version

14:25
In 2014 Bangalore witnessed a sudden surge in reports of child abuse cases. This led to a number of reactions and recommendations from all segments of society. We, the children, felt that a number of these recommendations, while aimed at protecting us, didn’t necessarily make us feel safer. We, therefore came together in an event called “Our Safety, Our Voice (OSOV) – by the Children, of the Children, for the Children”. This was organized by Inventure Academy in association with Enfold Proactive Health Trust on November 19, 2014 to mark the “World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse” “Our Safety, Our Voice”, brought together almost 200 children aged 8 – 18 years from various backgrounds and across 10 Bengaluru schools. While children voiced their concerns and recommendations through the day, a student charter committee from Inventure Academy, documented them by themes and the commonalities and differences expressed. For more on this please refer to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzWXctw9gQg Since it included a long list of recommendations, and highly divergent views on what students from different backgrounds said, we conducted a quantitative survey. This was shared with more than 1000 children, across 18 educational institutions and NGOs. The population sample was carefully chosen to remove any demographic, socio-economic, culture and gender biases. For more on our journey and findings please watch this video. A big thank you to our mentors - Feedback Consulting, Suchitra Rao, Consultant, UNICEF & Government of Karnataka, ENFOLD, Mundkur Law Parnters, Mr Gopalan Balagopal (former Chief of Child Protection, UNICEF),CMCA, Webtv, and the schools which directly participated in the Our Safety, Our Voice event and the subsequent survey. Last, but not the least - the Faculty / Management of Inventure Academy, who provided us with this opportunity to contribute to making Bengaluru safer for all the children, everywhere. Government directives on work safety too costly for small industries

The ongoing effort by the Ministry of Labour to enforce occupational safety audits particularly among Small and Medium Enterprises is eliciting mixed reactions. The Uganda Small Scale Industries Association USSIA, now says that the 2 month deadline given by the Ministry to institute better workplace related safety measures is not feasible and that it would instead add to their operational costs by way of fines. All presentations of the symposium will be posted in electronic formats (text and / or videos) after the Symposium, in French and / or English. • April 14 (Day 1): Uranium mines and the nuclear life cycle : health and environmental issues • April 15 (Day 2): Civil and military nuclear : ethics, economics and political issues • April 16 (Day 3): Human rights, indigenous peoples' rights and governance issues ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVED The Symposium is jointly organized by Physicians for Global Survival (1985 Nobel Peace Prize), the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Nature Québec, the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility and the Coalition pour que le Québec ait meilleure mine. It also receives support from the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (Swiss chapter), the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Sustainable Development Institute, the Cree Nation of Mistissini, MiningWatch Canada, and a number of other local, national and international partners. CONTEXT The Symposium is occurring at a time when many organizations and governments question the future ofnuclear power, currently providing about 11% of the world’s electricity. The year 2015 also marks the seventieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the corresponding United Nations negotiations of the Non Proliferation Treaty for the prevention and the abolition of nuclear arms. It will also see the tabling on a new UN treaty on climate change. Canada is one of the largest producers and exporters of uranium worldwide, yet its nuclear energy output is in relative decline. Only two provinces still operate nuclear reactors: Ontario and New Brunswick. While uranium has been primarily mined from Saskatchewan, the provinces of British Columbia and Nova Scotia have officially banned uranium mining. Quebec recently shut down its sole nuclear reactor and has tasked the Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE) with conducting an investigation on issues related to uranium mining. It is expected to release its report by May 20 2015. The Symposium aims to tackle these different issues and to provide recommendations to decision makers to better ensure protection for the human health, global security and a safe environment

A report released by the IMA team blamed the institute administration for the crisis, stating that the supplier – Pushpa Sales – had held back on oxygen supply due to non-payment of dues. It charged professor Rajiv Mishra, the then principal of the medical college, and Dr Kafeel Khan, in-charge of the encephalitis ward, with negligence. A three-member IMA team, comprising Dr KP Kushwaha, Dr Ashok Agarwal and Dr BB Gupta, had visited the medical college on Thursday. The report, which was released later that evening, also accused the institute administration of overpopulating the wards and not ensuring proper sanitation among patients.
