The vote against the project in Rosia Montana was unanimous. The commission recommended a new draft law for all mining in the area. "We have the same message for the exploitation of shale gasses as well. But for both projects and future ones we need to have clear laws passed to sustain the projects," Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta told reporters. Analysts reckon working the mine, which is based in one of the largest gold deposits in Europe, could create up to 2,300 jobs in the future and boost Romania's economy to the tune of billions of euros. Exploitation was expected to begin in November 2016. Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews
Top 10 Countries With The LARGEST Gold Reserves!

India According to the World Gold Council, the Bank of India currently holds 557.7 tons of gold. It is one of the largest stores of gold in the world! This makes up 9.9 % of the country’s total foreign reserve. Foreign exchange reserves is money or other assets held by a nation’s central bank so they can back the national currency. India, home to 1.25 billion people, is the number one largest consumer of the precious metal. Furthermore, India is one of the most reliable drivers of global demand. For example, India’s festival and wedding season, which runs from October to December, has historically been a major market for gold. And probably, one of the most interesting facts about India and gold is that India rarely invests much in gold. This is because as a country, India operates under the belief that buying gold leads to a deficit. And their belief must be proving right as things also seem to be improving for India. For instance, if you look at the last few years, India has increased its gold reserves from 557.74 to 557.77. While this might not seem like a lot, India is also at its highest point in history! In addition to what the country holds, Indian households which are considered the world’s largest hoarders of gold, hold a record 23,000-24,000 tons, which is worth about $800 billion. 9.) Netherlands In the past few years, the Netherlands has held 52% of its foreign reserve in gold. The Netherlands has a reported 612.45 tons. In 2016 it was reported that the bank was looking for a place to store all its gold because they were going to renovate the vaults and needed to moving it. The Dutch central bank is planning to move the country’s gold reserves from the center of Amsterdam to a new complex called the Cash Center. Like most countries, Dutch gold is also held in banks around the world to reduce risk. Security measures to guard the gold 24/7 have become a problem in Amsterdam. 189,000 kilos of gold will be moved at the beginning of 2022. Maybe this is one reason that over the last decade and a half, the Netherlands was selling off tons of gold in order to reduce its reserve. However, there weren’t that many buyers out there and they sold less than the country wanted. More recently the country has had less ambition to sell gold. Currently, the country holds the same amount of tons, 612.45 that they have over the last few years. However, the country has increased its percentage of foreign reserves to 61.2 %. 8.) Japan Japan is another country which had been increasing its gold reserves since the 1960’s. Their official gold holdings were reported at 765.2 tons. About 2.4% of Japan’s gold today is in foreign reserve. Historically, Japan has always held a bit more gold than other countries. This was true until 2011, when they began to sell some of their reserve in order to pump money into the economy after the tsunami and the following Fukushima nuclear disaster. But even with selling, Japan’s central bank has been one of the most aggressive practitioners of quantitative easing. For example, in January of 2016, it lowered interest rates below zero, which has helped fuel demand in gold around the world. 7.) Switzerland Prior to 1997, Switzerland was steadily building its gold reserves. In 1997, the decision was made to sell some of those reserves to bolster the Swiss currency and diversify the foreign reserves. The percent of foreign reserves in Switzerland is currently 6.7 %. Switzerland actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita and currently has reported 1,040 tons. Over time, many citizens in the country started to feel like the bank was getting rid of too much gold. They then banded together with the “Save the Swiss” movement. However, once everyone was able to vote in 2014, the vote came to a no, and gold continued to be sold. During World War II, Switzerland became the center of the gold trade in Europe, making transactions with both the Allies and Axis powers. Today, much of its gold trading is done with Hong Kong and China. Around last year, the Swiss National Bank made a $5.9 billion profit, reportedly from its gold holdings. Special Report from the Occupied Forest: Meet Activists Fighting Europe’s Largest Open-Pit Coal Mine

21:15
https://democracynow.org - Reporting from COP23 in Bonn, Germany, Democracy Now! travels to the nearby blockade of the Hambach coal mine, the largest open-pit coal mine in Europe. Activists say the mine extracts an extremely dirty form of coal called lignite, also known as brown coal, which causes the highest CO2 emissions of any type of coal when burned. For more than five years, they have been fighting to shut down the mine and to save the remaining forest from being cut down to make way for the expanding project. Only 10 percent of the ancient forest remains. Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs weekdays on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Coal mining in America's heartland | DW Documentary

42:26
West Virginia, USA - under its wild mountain idyll hides the "black hell": A labyrinth of dark tunnels - hard life in a coal mine. [Online until: 15 August 2019] "Wild, wonderful West Virginia” - that’s how the small state nestled in the Appalachian Mountains bills itself. This documentary reports on the daily struggle facing local coal miners hoping for help from Donald Trump; a sheriff combating the opioid epidemic that has already claimed thousands of lives; and a Cherokee environmental activist whose efforts have earned her intimidation and threats. The whistle of a locomotive at the front of an old coal train, quiet winding roads, and hardly a highway to be found - that’s still the image that many have of West Virginia today. But beneath the forest-covered mountains lies a labyrinth of tunnels just one meter high, in which miners still spend their entire working days toiling in the dark on their hands and knees. The camera team accompanies a traditional coal mining family as they go about their day. Together with the family’s two sons, Scott and Steven Lockhart, the crew ventures into the mine. Conversations with the miners reveal why people who had been lifelong Democratic Party supporters are suddenly placing their hopes for the future in Donald Trump. But the documentary also ventures beyond the coal mines to uncover the lesser-known sides of this Appalachian state - from snake-handling Pentecostal churches to the bluegrass and mountain ballads of Alan Cathead Johnston. We also speak with Sheriff Martin West, who sued the country’s three biggest pharmaceutical makers for their role in the opioid epidemic that has swept the region. And we meet another person who has decided to fight back: Maria Gunnoe, a young Cherokee activist who has dared to take on the coal barons that are ravaging the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The World's Largest Abandoned City - Ordos

04:36
Ordos The World’s Largest Abandoned City The development of the city of Ordos is a unique tale. Ordos is a city designed from scratch and built within 10 years. This city came to fruition after private mining companies were given the rights to dig into deposits in the late 90’s and 2000’s. This generated a lot of tax revenue making Ordos the 2nd highest income per capita city in China. Ordos is a city located in Inner Mongolia that has been constantly been burdened with water shortage issues. Instead of trying to revamp the current infrastructure the Chinese government decided to rebuild the city from scratch which is called “New Ordos” just 16 miles or 25 km kilometers away from the existing city now called “Old Ordos”. The people of Old Ordos refer to New Ordos as the Kangbashi district of Ordos, these new and old labels are basically not supported by anyone locally. Two villages built around the Wulan Mulan River were demolished and construction started in 2005. 161 billion dollars in infrastructure was invested to build the Kangbashi District over the first 5 years. Regardless if anyone lives in this new city, this is a major plus to the government of China as it increases China’s GDP. The government gave kickbacks to developers who helped boost GDP so building anything anywhere is promoted. The old city of Ordos or Dongsheng is home to over ½ a million people, it was expected that many of them would move to the new city as it became completed. As explained by many locals, a working couple only makes $800 a month combined of which ⅓ is taken for rent. The new apartments in New Ordos sell for 70 - 100 thousand dollars making it virtually impossible for locals to live there. Sales were slow at first but eventually investors snapped up many of the units in the new city. This has left New Ordos with a ton of infrastructure and no residents. The city was originally designed to hold 1 million people but was scaled down during construction to 500,000 then to 300,000 after coal prices crashed. The city features a 5 story shopping mall, impressive monuments and statues, art and city museum, the Ordos Dongsheng Stadium that seats 35,000 people, opera house, a brand new airport and a modern designed mosque. The city streets are lined with skyscraper after skyscraper that are almost completely empty. A toy store is one of the only stores in the massive 5 story mall, the man who runs the store says he sells something every few days and if the government doesn’t step in soon to fix it, he may have to move back to Dongsheng. It is estimated only 2 % of the buildings were ever filled the rest remain abandoned. Outside the mall an elaborate water show is put on every night with only a few people found to be watching it. A water show this size in a normal city would draw thousands of viewers daily. The city has everything it needs to be a great thriving new city like extra wide roads with bike lanes like what is found in Taipei, modern amenities and infrastructure but simply no people. The initial wave of 30,000 people that moved to New Ordos all lived in a 4 to 5 block radius just north of central park. A few years later that grew to 60,000 and now 12 years after the start of construction there are around 150,000 residents in a city that was originally designed for 1 million. The city has been doing many things to attract people to live there like moving the best schools from Dongsheng to Kangbashi. While some areas of Kangbashi aren’t a ghost town at all today, many still are. One abandoned project is the Ordos 100 Project, which is a project that was to have 100 different extreme luxury villas designed. Instead of the government doing it themselves they invited 100 different architects from around the world to each design a luxury villas to be placed on the map. Land sections were given out with the utmost creative freedom except the design was not to look like traditional Mongolian designs such as Yurts. Each architect designed their villa and construction started. Within the Ordos 100 Project site multiple half finished villas can be found. While many lay half finished some have progress going forward. NEW-MINE – EU Training Network for Resource Recovery Through Enhanced Landfill Mining

02:46
Europe has somewhere between 150,000 and 500,000 landfill sites, with an estimated 90% of them being “non-sanitary” landfills, predating the EU Landfill Directive of 1999. These older landfills tend to be filled with municipal solid waste and often lack any environmental protection technology. In order to avoid future environmental and health problems, many of these landfills will soon require expensive remediation measures. This situation might appear bleak, but it does present us with an exciting opportunity for a combined resource-recovery and remediation strategy, which will drastically reduce future remediation costs, reclaim valuable land, while at the same time unlocking valuable resources. However, the widespread adoption of Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM) in the EU, as envisaged by NEW-MINE, urgently requires skilled scientists, engineers, economists and policy makers who can develop cost-effective, environmentally friendly ELFM practices and regulatory frameworks. All this demands a European commitment to concerted, inter- and transdisciplinary research and innovation. This project has received funding from the European Union's EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 under Grant Agreement No 721185 More Info: http://new-mine.eu/

"Hambach forest stays!" - Germany and coal | DW Documentary

12:02
The tree houses in Hambach Forest have long symbolized resistance to open-pit lignite mining. Now the authorities are having them removed. German energy giant RWE wants to clear-cut large parts of the forest this autumn to expand its lignite mine. Dozens of activists have been living in tree houses in Hambach Forest in an attempt to save it from being clear-cut for lignite mining. The authorities are now taking action to evict them. Germany energy giant RWE, which owns the land, has already mined much of the lignite in the region. Now it plans to remove most of the remaining woodland to expand its open-pit mine. Antje Grothus refuses to accept that. She lives in a neighboring village and supports the tree house dwellers, saying that, in any case, brown coal is not a fuel for the future. Now a fatal accident has occurred during the eviction. A journalist trying to document it plunged from a rope bridge between two tree houses. The death has strengthened the activists in their conviction that dependence on coal must stop. A report by Viktoria Kleber. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Exploring One Of The Biggest Abandoned Mines In Nevada: Part 1

25:49
Consistent with its status as one of the biggest abandoned mines in Nevada, it requires a hike of thousands of feet and a significant elevation decline just to get down to where the underground workings really begin at this massive mine… As can be seen near the start of this video, there are twin portals and passages running parallel down to the underground workings. Our guess was that this was because one passage was for traffic entering the mine and the other for traffic departing the mine. Deep underneath the mountain, the passages converge on a main hub from which drifts branch out in all directions. At the heart of this hub is a breakroom and a large workshop. A large drift takes off to the right from the workshop, while to the left a drift meanders away and another passage descends deeper into the bowels of the mountain. In this first video, we explore the hub of the mine as well as the workings taking off to the left from the hub. Following the descending passage, we were eventually blocked by flooding as the mine workings continue deep beneath the water level inside of the mine. One can only imagine how many miles of workings are under those dark waters. Fortunately, the other main drift taking off to the left was on a slight upward incline and so the water drained down and (mostly) out. With the miles of underground workings at this abandoned mine stretching well into the double digits, one might expect there to be quite a lot of information available on this site. However, that is not the case. There is surprisingly little information to be found online and the various government agencies involved with this site have done a pretty thorough job of scrubbing references to it from their public databases. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

World's Longest Tunnel - How It Was Built - Full Documentary

45:08
The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT; German: Gotthard-Basistunnel, Italian: Galleria di base del San Gottardo, Romansh: Tunnel da basa dal Son Gottard) is a railway tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland. It opened on 1 June 2016, and full service began on 11 December 2016. With a route length of 57.09 km (35.5 mi), it is the world's longest and deepest traffic tunnel and the first flat, low-level route through the Alps. It lies at the heart of the Gotthard axis and constitutes the third tunnel connecting the cantons of Uri and Ticino, after the Gotthard Tunnel and the Gotthard Road Tunnel. The link consists of two single-track tunnels connecting Erstfeld (Uri) with Bodio (Ticino) and passing below Sedrun (Graubünden). It is part of the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA) project, which also includes the Ceneri Base Tunnel further south (scheduled to open late 2020) and the Lötschberg Base Tunnel on the other main north-south axis. It is referred to as a "base tunnel" since it bypasses most of the existing Gotthard railway line, a winding mountain route opened in 1882 across the Saint-Gotthard Massif, which was operating at its capacity before the opening of the GBT. The new base tunnel establishes a direct route usable by high-speed rail and heavy freight trains. The main purpose of the Gotthard Base Tunnel is to increase local transport capacity through the Alpine barrier, especially for freight, notably on the Rotterdam–Basel–Genoa corridor, and more specifically to shift freight volumes from trucks to freight trains. This both significantly reduces the danger of fatal road crashes involving trucks, and reduces the environmental damage caused by heavy trucks. The tunnel provides a faster connection between the canton of Ticino and the rest of Switzerland, as well as between northern and southern Europe, cutting the Basel/Zürich–Lugano–Milan journey time for passenger trains by one hour (and from Lucerne to Bellinzona by 45 minutes). After 64 percent of Swiss voters accepted the NRLA project in a 1992 referendum, first preparatory and exploratory work began in 1996. The official start of construction began on 4 November 1999 at Amsteg. Drilling operations in the eastern tunnel were completed on 15 October 2010 in a breakthrough ceremony broadcast live on Swiss TV, and in the western tunnel on 23 March 2011. The tunnel's constructor, AlpTransit Gotthard AG, originally planned to hand over the tunnel to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS) in operating condition in December 2016 but, on 4 February 2014, the handover date was changed to 5 June 2016 with the start of an 850-day opening countdown calendar on the AlpTransit homepage. As of 1998, the total projected cost of the project was CHF 6.323 billion; as of December 2015, the final cost is projected as CHF 9.560 billion. Nine people died during construction.

Too much milk in Europe | DW Documentary

28:34
Europe produces too much milk. The surplus milk is processed by the ton into powdered milk for export to Africa. The results can be disastrous. African milk farmers simply cannot compete with European price dumping. Our agricultural exports torpedo all development efforts. European dairy products sell for next to nothing – it’s just one of the consequences of the crisis that has been raging since the abolition of milk quotas in 2015. Never before was milk so cheap in our supermarkets: European farmers have reacted to falling prices with rising production. But what happens to what is not sold here? Export is the magic word for policy makers in German agriculture. For countries like Cameroon, the wave of milk washing over it from Europe is a disaster. These developments stifle promising approaches within the country’s dairy sector. Dairies, some of them even funded with European development aid, lie empty because the farmers refuse to deliver milk to them. They know that their milk has no chance against the indirectly subsidized produce from Europe. "It’s not fair”, says Hayatou El Hadji Souley, dairy farmer in Cameroon. "We should be increasing our home production in order to improve people’s lives here”. That is exactly what German politicians are calling for, too. They want conditions to improve in Africa so that economic migrants won’t feel obliged to come to Europe. Our documentary shows that European dumping prices are the opposite of what Cameroon needs to have a healthy dairy industry. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. Freezing 200,000 Tons of Lethal Arsenic Dust

04:34
Giant Mine sits near Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Once it was a productive gold mine, but after the gold ran out, the mining company went bankrupt and left the government to clean up the mess: enough arsenic trioxide dust to kill everyone on Earth. The solution: freezing it, at least for now. Thanks to all the team at the Giant Mine Remediation Project! Why the Deadly Asbestos Industry is Still Alive and Well

19:28
Despite irrefutable scientific evidence calling out the dangers of asbestos, 2 million tons of the carcinogen are exported every year to the developing world, where it's often handled with little to no regulation. For this episode of VICE Reports, correspondent Milène Larsson traveled to the world's largest asbestos mine in the eponymous town of Asbest, Russia, to meet workers whose livelihoods revolve entirely around the dangerous mineral. Surprisingly, the risks associated with asbestos mining didn't seem to worry the inhabitants; in fact, asbestos is the city's pride, celebrated with monuments, songs, and even its own museum. Larsson then visits Libby, Montana, another mining town almost on the other side of the globe, where the effects of asbestos exposure are undeniable: 400 townspeople have died from asbestos-related diseases, and many more are slowly choking to death. Why is the deadly industry of mining and selling asbestos still alive and well? Subscribe to Motherboard Radio today! http://apple.co/1DWdc9d In October of last year Motherboard gained access to a massive, secretive Bitcoin mine housed within a repurposed factory in the Liaoning Province in rural northeast China. This is the infrastructure that keeps the digital currency’s decentralized network up and running, and its operators are profiting big time. The mine we visited is just one of six sites owned by a secretive group of four people, part of a colossal mining operation that, as of our visit, cumulatively generated 4,050 bitcoins a month, equivalent to a monthly gross of $1.5 million. Afghanistan's Secret Billion Dollar Emerald Mines

27:50
Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? Subscribe to Journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures For similar stories see: Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines https://youtu.be/c7iv1fef6qo Zimbabwe's Blood Diamond Killing Fields https://youtu.be/k9Bk5VIhjiY The Children Risking Their Lives In Underwater Gold Mines https://youtu.be/P1L_pxYZVwE "We have a lot of requests from Europe because the Emeralds from Afghanistan are the best in the world", Raphael says. He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? Europe's largest gold mine?

07:11
Europes largest Gold Mine???? Dalradian Gold are about to be given permission to commence mining in the Sperrin Mountains in County Tyrone. The Foyle River system, including the Owenkillew River (only meters from mine site) is a designated Special Area of Conservation, and Area of Special Scientific Importance and in located in the Sperrins Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Local government, including the Department of the 'Environment' have failed to insist that a full independent Environmental Impact Assessment be carried out, before granting permission. It appears that foreign investment, tax revenue and the creation of a hand full of jobs is enough to cause government to negate their environmental responsibilities and ignore European Designations, designed to protect this very important and fragile environment. The Owenkillew River is one of just four in N.Ireland which contain a population of the severely threatened Fresh Water Pearl Mussel, Margartifera margartifera, an important spawning ground for the Atlantic Salmon, Sea Trout, not to mention home to the Otter, Kingfisher, Dipper.......the list goes on and on. Only in Ireland!!!!!!!!!

$1,000.00 Gold Paydirt - Unclassified Nugget Bucket from Lynch Mining

Today I panned the new $1,000+ "Unclassified Nugget Bucket" from Lynch Mining. It's "paydirt" from the Lynch Mining company, and it contains gold. Find out what happens! **EDIT** I apologize, it's not 24K gold! It's probably closer to 18K-22K gold, as pointed out by me in another (more recent) video when I test Arizona gold for karat purity. India's Sand Mafia: The Dark Secrets of India's Booming Construction Industry

24:35
India's building boom has spawned an illegal trade in sand. Plundering the environment and even killing those who get in its way, the "sand mafia" has spread its influence throughout India. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Sand is the key to the construction industry, but there is no legal supply to meet the increasing demand. Accordingly, criminal gangs are ravaging riverbeds and beaches. Sumaira Abdulali recounts the damage done to her local beach: "the whole level of sand has dropped by about 10 feet ... They’ve really destroyed it". When she tried to report the perpetrators, she was met with fierce resistance. "They bashed up the car, broke everything. They hit all of us. They broke my teeth." Sumaira now campaigns to expose this black-market trade, which harms many living near sand supplies. Brijmohan Yadav, like many farmers in his region, had his plot devastated by illegal sand mining. However, his complaints were ignored: "the mafia is so influential. They have police and local authorities on their side". Brijmohan began to fight for his land, but ended up fighting for his life. "These people kidnapped me and took me to an isolated place. They beat me up and threatened to kill me if I did not stop all this." Whilst there is an almost blanket ban on unlicensed mining across India, in remote, rural areas it continues unabated. The Longest Tunnel in The World

43:20
The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is a railway tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland. It opened on 1 June 2016, and full service began on 11 December 2016. With a route length of 57 km (35.4 mi) and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels, shafts and passages, it is the world's longest rail tunnel, surpassing the Seikan Tunnel in Japan. Its main purpose is to increase total transport capacity across the Alps, especially for freight, notably between Germany and Italy, and more particularly to shift freight volumes from road to rail to reduce environmental damage caused by ever-increasing numbers of heavy lorries. A secondary benefit will be to cut the journey time for passenger trains from Zürich to Milan by about an hour and from Zürich to Lugano to 1-hour 40 minutes. The project consists of two single-track tunnels. It is part of the AlpTransit project, also known as the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA), which includes the Lötschberg Base Tunnel between the cantons of Bern and Valais and the under construction Ceneri Base Tunnel (scheduled to open late 2019) to the south. It bypasses the Gotthardbahn, a winding mountain route opened in 1882 across the Saint-Gotthard Massif, which is now operating at capacity, and establishes a direct route usable by high-speed rail and heavy freight trains. The total cost of the project is 9.8 billion Swiss francs, or US$10.3 billion. When completed, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be one of the longest tunnel construction projects in the world: 20 years of constant construction and preparation. blackfields: poland's coal industry

04:38
Poland is the second largest coal producer and consumer in all of Europe and consequently one of the most polluted and polluting countries. From all fossil fuels brown coal is the one that has the biggest impact on climate change, producing 1/3 of the worlds CO2 emissions. Pep Bonet visited the region of Upper Silesia -- one of the most heavily industrialized and polluted areas in the continent -- to document the environmental and humanitarian impact of coal mining. During his trip to Poland Pep visited "Adamow", a coal mine that pumps 80 to 120 million-m3 of water out of the ground every year. Dry grounds enable the extraction of brown coal but the lack of water makes the land infertile affecting the life of local inhabitants. Pep: "the surrounding burnt-out landscape is littered with heaps of coal waste, trucks and excavators. Deep in the mine, conveyor belts slither along, laden with earth and rock. On the observation deck built around the hole, people fall silent; the view has a sobering effect". Poland has one of the highest numbers of lakes in the world and the current developments of expanding mining throughout the country will have a serious impact on these natural resources. Devastating effects can occur on the fragile ecosystem endangering several species. Marshes and peat bogs can also dry up, causing irreversible destruction. Researchers believe that the impact of these new mining operations will affect not only surrounding areas but also regions hundreds of kilometers away. If mining companies continue to refuse considering these facts and reevaluate their plans, the damage caused by opencast mining in Poland might have only begun. Small-scale Gold Mining: Chinese Operations in Cameroon

21:20
Ein Film von Katja Becker und Jonathan Happ (2016) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem vom BMBF-geförderten Forschungsprojekt AFRASO –"Afrika's Asiatische Optionen" (http://www.afraso.org). Wissenschaftliches Konzept: Diderot Nguepjouo und Jürgen Runge Over the last decade, Cameroon’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector has gone through several mutations thanks to the new policy which has attracted various international investors from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. As from 2012 on, the involvement of Chinese entrepreneurs has dramatically accelerated the pace of progress in the sector. Some of them switched from other economic activities they were already pursuing in the country whilst the others, mostly mining professionals, moved from the Ghanaian gold mining business to Cameroon. Chinese entrepreneurs have gradually become main players in the gold mining operations, recording successes, while other actors, e.g. Koreans, went bankrupt and in many cases have sold their business capital to Chinese without any competition. Through taking over those projects coupled with their greenfield mining initiatives, Chinese investors has gained the image of successful businessmen in the sector. As a result, their working style and techniques are gradually being adopted by almost all local and foreign investors. This is the context that spurred AFRASO researcher Diderot NGUEPJOUO together with the filmmaking crew UJUZI travel to Cameroon and shoot the 3rd AFRASO documentary. The film follows several active players in the major segments of the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) in Cameroon: a Chinese investor; local entrepreneurs (member of Parliament, businessman, and middleman); workers, small operators in “Nguéré”, civil servants as well as the affected communities on their working sites. The film reveals that political elite and administrative authorities appear to favour the involvement of Chinese operators because they consider it beneficial to the State and local entrepreneurs (service providers, middlemen…), while traditional rulers and business people who did not partner with Chinese are less supportive of this presence. Furthermore, the positive impacts resulting from gold mining are reported to be enjoyed by Chinese investors and some local entrepreneurs while the communities are left with the impact of these activities such as land disturbance, water pollution, diseases... All in all, the movie tries to put forward the ongoing dynamics and contradictions that are taking place in the Cameroon's gold mining.

Green Tech Future: Environmental Atlas of Europe

07:25
Greenland is one of the most mineral rich regions in the world and within the last decade Greenland has become a new mining frontier. This is due to the fact that the Greenland Ice Cap is rapidly melting around the edges, exposing new mineral rich mountains. Additionally this effects the melting of the Arctic sea-ice, which means that cargo transportation is becoming much more accessible throughout the year. Located at the tip of southern Greenland, The Kvanefjeld Mountains are believed to be the world's second largest source of rare earth metals and minerals. Currently, several international companies are exploring the mining opportunities for these rare earth minerals, which are a critical resource for most of the world's new green-technology and electronic products. The film explores how Greenland's government is requiring high standards of extraction, demanding environmentally sustainable extraction methods as a minimum.

This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- http://www.ceepackaging.com - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focussing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine! Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Old coal mines transformed into holiday lake resort

04:53
(19 Jun 2018) LEADIN: Germany is celebrating the opening of a new lake this summer, one of dozens created by filling former coal mines. The goal of this massive environmental project is to create Europe's biggest artificial lake district, transforming a former industrial area into a tourist destination. STORYLINE: A sweeping view of these vast lakes shows little sign of what this region used to be. But this was once mining country, and these lakes are all man-made. It's a huge project that's transformed the old industrial landscape into a new lake district. The open cast Meuro mine that once dominated the landscape, providing jobs to thousands of workers, has vanished. Only a floating excavator plucking sunken trees out of the water hints at the effort that's gone into reshaping this corner of eastern Germany over the past decades. It's part of a massive environmental clean up in Lusatia, a region that once provided much of the coal which heated German homes and powered the country's industrial rise. Lignite is a soft brown coal that often lies close to the surface, meaning it is easiest to just remove layer upon layer from above rather than dig underground shafts. "This is a region that was shaped by strip mining for hundreds of years," says Kathrin Winkler, a native of Lusatia197, who is the head of Lusatia Lakes Tourism Association.           "That means we had gigantic open-cast mines here. We have extracted the coal from the deeper layers in the area. We have broken down gigantic open pit mines." As a young woman growing up in communist East Germany, Winkler worked in the Meuro mine for a year. Now it's her job to promote Lusatia as the next big tourist destination, billing it as a tranquil lakeside retreat for weary city dwellers from nearby Berlin and Dresden. The idea would have seemed outlandish to anyone looking at the alien, lifeless landscape not so long ago. But over the past two decades the man-made craters have been slowly resculpted to create 26 lakes connected by 13 canals and hundreds of miles of cycle track. Instead of coal-fired power plants, the horizons are now dotted with wind turbines and fields full of solar panels. Much of the task of turning brownfield sites into the kind of "blooming landscapes" Germany's late chancellor, Helmut Kohl, promised East Germans shortly before reunification has fallen to a state-owned company, LMBV. "It's a unique task we've been given here," says spokesperson Uwe Steinhuber. "Among other things, we are creating 25,000 hectares of new blue eyes, i.e. new lake landscapes in the two districts in Lusatia and central Germany. You could say that it's the biggest landscape reconstruction in Europe that we're operating. There's no script for this job, no complete task description and also no experience that you can rely on." Steinhuber had just begun a career in the East German diplomatic service when the Berlin Wall collapsed, and with it the life plans of millions who had grown up in the knowledge that, if little else, the communist regime would guarantee them work for life. Of the more than 90,000 jobs that existed in Lusatia's coal mines three decades ago, only a few thousand remain. Some former miners have found work in restoring the depleted countryside, a task German law requires mining companies to set money aside for. So far, the company has spent 10.6 billion euros (12.5 billion US dollars) removing the legacy of industry and creating 25,000 hectares (61,775 acres) of lakes. Portfolio Watch EP 21: Trade wars: How vulnerable are emerging markets?

27:21
Synchronised global growth, trade tensions and political uncertainty in Europe has put emerging markets under pressure with the consequence of sliding towards contractionary territory. Commodity markets are very cyclical and higher demand prompt companies to expand capacity. Higher prices attract competition which effects oversupply and causes a decline in price. The worst case scenario is that prices fall below marginal levels causing closure. Mining companies historically operate in a volatile, unpredictable environment but still play an important role in a diversified investment portfolio.
