Protection Against Radioactivity in Uranium Mines 1969 US Bureau of Mines

25:12
This film from the United States Bureau of Mines presents general descriptions of the hazards of radon daughters in uranium mines, and outlines the environmental control, principles and procedures for mitigating the hazard. Scenes of underground mines show the origin and reason of the hazard, and various methods of ventilation are shown on how to correct the condition. Uranium mining occurred mostly in the southwestern United States and drew many Native Americans and others into work in the mines and mills. Despite a long and well-developed understanding, based on the European experience earlier in the century, that uranium mining led to high rates of lung cancer, few protections were provided by employers or government for US miners before 1962 and their adoption after that time was slow and incomplete. Some US officials and scientists advocated ventilation requirements in US mines as a proactive, preventative measure during the 1950s, on the basis of their knowledge of European experience. Duncan Holaday, an industrial hygienist with the PHS, has generally been recognized as the most prominent advocate for ventilation. He led the effort to obtain measurements of radon in the mines, and he used the data to argue forcefully within the government that ventilation would be effective and was feasible. His arguments achieved only limited success, as there was government resistance to requiring ventilation and his views were not made public at the time. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was an obstacle. In the late 1940s, controversy erupted in the New York Operations Office over the hazards from beryllium and uranium mining. The AEC wrote worker health requirements in contracts with companies that handled beryllium. After conflicting recommendations from staff, it chose not to establish such requirements for uranium. It claimed to lack legal authority, but it did not explain the legal difference between uranium and beryllium. The AEC did not lack knowledge: records of a January 25, 1951, internal meeting of AEC and PHS staff reveal that, on the basis of early measurements, they believed that radon was present in levels that would cause cancer and that ventilation could abate the hazard. Public acknowledgment of this problem was apparently squelched. For instance, Hueper, the scientist who wrote the 1942 review and who was then at the National Cancer Institute, was forbidden to speak in public about his concerns about the health hazard of radon in uranium mines. It is reported that he was even forbidden to travel west of the Mississippi, lest he say too much to the wrong people. The resulting high rates of illness among miners led in 1990 to passage of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. For more details, see the outstanding article, The History of Uranium Mining and the Navajo People, in the Sept 2002 American Journal of Public Health at http://www.ajph.org/cgi/reprint/92/9/1410 .

ONLY ON AP Mining causes Greek villages to crumble

06:36
(19 Dec 2018) Anargyri is a hardscrabble enclave of homes in a black landscape gutted by coal mining. The village once had more than 400 inhabitants and now has fewer than 50 after being torn apart over decades. Its roads are slowly buckling, door frames and walls cracking open, and residents leaving not in panic but out of desperation. One after another, tiny villages in northern Greece's lignite belt have been destroyed by mining, the ground becoming too unsteady to hold homes upright. Bells at one church in the area are not rung regularly for fear of causing more cracks. A few dozen households in the village have refused a power company offer to move to a rented apartment in a nearby town. They are demanding full compensation for their homes, a right only granted by law if mining activity occurs directly below a settlement. Heavy excavators and vehicles on the horizon look more like toy trucks, dwarfed by the scale of the blackened mining fields. Despite warnings expressed at the current UN climate talks in Poland, backed by ambitious European Union renewable targets, Greece is planning to remain hooked on coal and is on course to expand its dependence on oil and gas, anxious to attract overseas investment as it emerges from a financial crisis that lasted nearly a decade. Nearly a third of Greek electricity is produced by coal-fired plants and the country has no phase-out plan for domestically produced coal, unlike most parts of western Europe. Known as brown coal, lignite is considered to be the lowest rank of coal, and Greece is currently the world's 12th largest producer according to data from the US federal Energy Information Administration, with some 36 million tons annually. Under measures hammered out with Greece's bailout creditors, the state-controlled power company, PPC, will privatize three coal-fired electricity plants, prolonging their life. The government has also embarked on a major exploration drive for oil and gas off its western and south coast. The ventures have alarmed environmental groups which issued any urgent plea to the government this week to reverse course, switching investments to renewable sources abundant in Greece like solar and wind power. "We must act directly to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but our country is moving in the opposite direction," a letter addressed to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipas said. It was signed by 34 environmental and human rights groups, including Greenpeace, the World Wide Fund for Nature, Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders. Greece is planning "investment in fossil fuels for decades, along with worrying delivery of hundreds of thousands of square kilometers, on an off shore, for hydrocarbon extraction. This would surrender the country to the nightmare consequences of climate change," the letter said. In Anargyri, residents have mixed feelings about coal. PPC is a vital employer with some 5,000 local jobs. The other attraction is that lignite, mined domestically, is not vulnerable to market or geopolitical shocks, unlike imported oil and gas, much of it coming from Russia. "Clearly, lignite activity will be reduced and will be replaced by other sources of energy, renewable sources of energy," PPC executive Konstantinos Theodoridis said. "But lignite will continue to be a strategic fuel that, in any geopolitical instability, is the only energy-producing fuel that is absolutely controlled by our country." Slaves of Dubai

Most people know Dubai for its massive skyscrapers and luxurious hotels, but few know that the city was built by modern-day slaves. -- For months, the BBC's Ben Anderson hung out around the glittering, insane towers springing up in Dubai trying to infiltrate the community of expatriate workers who are putting them up. What he found when he finally got in was that the jewel of the Arab world is almost entirely built upon imported slave labor. SA Nehanda News | Nyambirai buys Arcturus Mine – Nehanda Radio

04:59
Businessman Tawanda Nyambirai has snapped up Arcturus Mine from Metallon Corporation (Metallon). The London-listed firm placed Arcturus Mine under care and maintenance in the 2016 first quarter with mining operations suspended due to consistent losses. As part of the transaction, Metallon ceded all of its rights and obligations concerning Arcturus Mine — a gold resource of one million ounces with exploration potential — to TN Securities, an investment firm owned by Nyambirai. This includes trade and statutory creditors and the mining rights over Arcturus mining lease Number 33.Metallon chief executive Ken Mekani said the sale of Arcturus Mine was in line with the gold producer’s strategy to prioritise investments, focus resources and reduce costs. The Mzi Khumalo-owned mining giant has four operating mines and over eight million ounces of gold resources.“The transaction provides the mine, which was on care and maintenance, with the opportunity for the resumption of operations, leading to job creation and increased gold output for the country,” he said.Arcturus is a robust asset with a significant gold resource and Metallon received offers from a number of potential investors, both from within Zimbabwe and abroad, Mekani said.“We have taken the decision to sell the mine to a Zimbabwean company in order to empower local investors. As the leading gold mining company in Zimbabwe and a significant employer, Metallon is committed to operating and investing in Zimbabwe,” he added. The latest announcement comes after Metallon in September said it was restructuring its business as part of a strategy to increase efficiencies and meet growth targets.Metallon runs four mines, namely How Mine, Mazowe, Redwing and Shamva. Each of these mines is now operating under separately registered companies, namely Bulawayo Mining Company, Goldfields of Mazowe, King’s Daughter Mining Company and Goldfields of Shamva, respectively. The companies will have their own boards and management that will now assume all responsibilities over operations and suppliers, thereby reducing bureaucracy and bringing renewed focus across the group. New managing directors have been appointed to run the operations.“As the country’s leading gold producer, Metallon has a duty to invest in production and help meet national gold output targets. Metallon has an ambitious plan to increase gold production. As part of that plan, we had a thorough evaluation of our structure and operations,” Mekani said.“One of our key findings was that in order for us to efficiently exploit our assets in the future, we require each mine to focus clearly on managing their own operations.“Reorganising the group will allow each operation to manage and exploit the vast potential of our assets more efficiently. By empowering each mine, we are making the company stronger as a whole,” he said. The reorganisation is a continuing exercise and stakeholders will be updated on material developments as necessary.

As millions of American workers are facing cuts in their pay, their pensions and their benefits, a group of unionized miners in the desert town of Boron, California said NO when their employer, Rio Tinto, a giant global mining corporation, tried to slash their wages and benefits. In retaliation for refusing to accept these cuts, Rio Tinto, locked these workers out of their jobs and hired replacements from around the U.S. But the miners and their families stood strong and organized a mass support system both in the U.S. and abroad. This documentary reveals what happened during a 4 month struggle between the workers and their employer. http://www.lockedoutmovie.org

[Webinar] Ethical Sourcing & Conflict Minerals in the European Union

58:57
The recently published European Union conflict mineral regulation contains new requirements for businesses with tin, tungsten, tantalum and/or gold in their supply chain. Truck Load-In at Vest Frac Sand Mine in the Permian Basin

00:26
One thing we do our best to maintain about our frac sand load-in process is predictability. The entire process from mine-gate to mine-gate is designed to be ten minutes or less. Frac Sand Load-In Process: This video was taken at our Vest Frac Sand Facility in the heart of the Permian Basin. The actual loading part of the process inside the silos takes approximately 2-1/2 minutes, during which a spout loads 23 tons of frac sand into each truck. To learn more about our loading process, click https://www.blackmountainsand.com/resources/frac-sand-loading/. Washed sand: Our Winkler White® sand meets the API standards for fracking with a K factor resistance comparable to Northern White sand. However, because our washed sand is produced in-basin, we eliminate an entire segment of the logistics supply chain––rail. As such, Winkle White® is available at a significantly lower cost than Northern White. To learn more about our frac sand solutions in the Permian Basin, click https://www.blackmountainsand.com/products/. Take a look at this color comparison of unwashed/washed sand at one of our Permian Basin facilities. The lighter stockpile is truly Winkler WHITE®, which is ready to be dried and screened before silo storage. Unedited color! https://www.facebook.com/blackmountainsand/photos/a.507386632965708/744577109246658/?type=3&theater Frac Sand Facilities: Black Mountain Sand has frac sand facilities in numerous active shale basins in the United States, providing 40/70, 40/140 and 100 Mesh sand to oil and gas operators and service companies for fracking. Our flagship product, Winkler White® is provided in the Permian Basin in 40/70 and 100 Mesh. For more info, see https://www.blackmountainsand.com/products/. Our Winter Garden White™ is available in 40/140 Mesh from our mine in the Eagle Ford Shale. This sand meets or exceeds the API standards for fracking and our proven K factor resistance enables for high pressure pumping without compromising the integrity of the sand. For more information on our Dimmit Mine in the Eagle Ford Shale, click https://www.blackmountainsand.com/frac-sand-eagle-ford-shale-dimmit/. Frac Sand Mining Jobs: Frac sand mining jobs with Black Mountain Sand have great earning potential in a booming industry. We have need of personnel across a range of skillsets at our frac sand mining facilities across the U.S. as well as at our corporate offices in Fort Worth, Texas. Mutare assigns land for diamond centre - SA Nehanda News

05:09
Mutare City Council has availed 55 hectares of land in Fern Hill for the construction of a multi-million dollar diamond centre or Gemology Park as efforts to accrue maximum benefits from diamonds value chain gather pace. The centre, modelled along the same lines with the School of Mines in Bulawayo, will be constructed in two phases with $18 million having been set aside for the first phase planned to kick start early next year.State mining entity, the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (Pvt) Ltd, will spearhead the establishment of the centre. The diamond miner will be partnered by other stakeholders among them the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in the project. The School of Mines, Diamond Beneficiating Association of Zimbabwe (DBAZ), Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ), Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and Kenako Diamond Processing Company are also part of the stakeholders committee. The Gemology will be subdivided into four sections namely the School of Gemology, which will offer training courses across the value chain, Diamond Manufacturing and Lapidary, which will house cutting and polishing companies, Jewellery Blacksmith and Manufacturing for Blacksmith and Manufacturers as well as Ancillary Services that will house all supporting businesses.ZCDC chief executive officer Dr Moris Mpofu, confirmed the development that he said will help Zimbabwe spread its wings from the extractive sector to the downstream sector that constitute a larger chuck of the world’s $252 billion global diamond industry.“The 2018 diamond value addition and beneficiation cluster targets set in Government’s Zim-Asset blueprint are to have at least 1,2 million carats of polished gem diamonds produced, 1 000 jobs created in downstream businesses and establishment of value addition industries in industrial diamond products,” said Dr Mpofu.“The target also extends to developing a strong skills base and industrial capacity in downstream processes in the diamond value chain. ZCDC is spearheading downstream industries capacitation programmes, which include the establishment of a Gemology Park in Mutare that will accommodate businesses across the entire diamond value chain.“Mutare City Council, which is excited about this investment coming to town, has already availed 55 hectares of land in Fern Hill in Mutare for the construction of the Zimbabwe Gemology Park,” he said. The ZCDC boss added that his company expects the facility to boost the economy through employment creation, value addition and industry growth, which will be good for both the local Manicaland community and the country at large.Architectural drawings for the first phase of the Gemology Park, which is the school, Dr Mpofu said, have already been produced and the first phase is expected to cost $18 million. The mining entity is also engaging with Government to afford the Park with Special Economic Zone status to encourage investment and Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa confirmed this in his 2018 national budget presentation.“Already Treasury, has received requests for funding the development of such infrastructure at Sunway City and Victoria Falls amounting to US$16,7 million, and is considering submissions on the Diamond Cutting and Polishing Special Economic Zone in Mutare,” said Minister Chinamasa.

Imagine if we built an economic system built on abundance rather than scarcity. Taking advantage of the latest digital tools, computational power, material science, biomimicry and a somewhat older idea - the commons - this new system could have the power to transform how we live and work. System Reset is a feature-length documentary which explores this story of change in our economy. Shot in London, Amsterdam and Barcelona, this film is a DIF 2018 exclusive. It features some of the leading thinkers in materials, economics, the commons movement, FabLabs, digital citizenship, urban planning and architecture. Don't miss your opportunity to see them collectively weave a picture of how our economy could operate. This video is translated thanks to Jozsef Vass. One massive Australian car manufacturing industry, eliminating other competitors. Industrial projects, National Industrial Rail & Passenger Network, & the building of efficient and effective Water Catchment Systems across our nation.
