Sustainability Issues & Responses of the Mining Industry in Australia: Dr Dilhani Kapu Arachchilage

05:25
Dr Dilhani Kapu Arachchilage, from the School of Accounting, Finance and Economics at Edith Cowan University (ECU), presents her research "Key Contemporary Sustainability Issues and the Diversity of Responses of the Mining Industry in Australia" in ECU's 2012 Your Research In a Nutshell Competition. Dr Arachchilage's research focuses on sustainability development, which is a contemporary concept. She discusses research she undertook with ECU's School of Management. She discusses the popular definition for sustainable development, defined by the World Commission on Economic Development ~1987 as 'sustainable development is simply about meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of meeting the needs of future generations.' Dr Arachchilage sees sustainable development as an important issue as far as intra-generational equity is concerned and also as far as inter-generational equity is concerned. Dr Arachchilage's research looked at the 3 spheres identified as the key areas of sustainability development: environment, society and economy; supported by evidence in triple bottom line reporting (3BL) reporting and in GRI Initiative. Her study analysed 8 multinational companies who operate in Australia on the basis of 13 criteria across those 3 key spheres: - Environmental Performance: Biodiversity & Land Stewardship, Climate Change, Water Management - Social: Work & Community Safety, Stakeholder Engagement, HIV AIDS Reduction, Policies for Mine Lifecycle, Human Rights, Community Development - Economic: Supply Chain Management, Transparency & Accountability, External Performance Management, Sector Specific Global Initiatives For each criteria, Dr Arachchilage selected a number of indicators. As a result, her study examined about 67 indicators communicated in self reported sustainability reports, annual reports, media reports. Dr Arachchilage found that companies have selected different legitimation strategies in order to achieve social legitimacy and demonstrate they adhere to the social contract. While there were differences, there were 3 key legitimation strategies used by the multinational organisations she studied: - Disclosure of improvement - Alter public perception - Divert attention from issues and negative reports in the media For more information on Dr Dilhani Kapu Arachchilage see http://www.ecu.edu.au/schools/accounting-finance-economics/staff/profiles/faculty-research-scholar/dr-nirosha-dilhani-kapu-arachchilage ECU's Your Research in a Nutshell Competition is open to "early career" researchers at ECU. Participants present on their research, with presentations limited to 5 minutes/less, using only 3 presentation slides. The 2012 Your Research in a Nutshell competition ran during ECU's Research Week 17-21 September 2012: http://www.ecu.edu.au/research/week/overview

Ancient tradition / modern fashion | Mahlet Afework | TEDxPlaceDesNations

07:55
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Combining ancient designs, traditional skills and a modern approach to fashion and entrepreneurship can lift women out of poverty and bring African fashion into the limelight. Mahlet Afework is a fashion designer based in Addis Ababa. She started her career at 16 as a model and musician, while simultaneously studying nursing. She left school and quit modeling to follow her passion and become a professional fashion designer. She has since gained critical acclaim for her cutting-edge designs; winning the 2012 Origin Africa's design award, showcasing her work at African Fashion Week New York 2012, and winning the 2010 Designer of the Year award from Alliance Ethio-Française at European Fashion Day in Addis. Mahlet works exclusively with hand-woven fabrics made by women. She creates clothing and accessories which are fresh and cutting-edge and at the same time very wearable. Working with hand-woven fabrics is a way for Mahlet to give back and to support women weavers who are often marginalized within the male-dominated weaving community. Mahlet is a beneficiary/participant of the International Trade Centre's Women and Trade Programme. The programme supports women entrepreneurs and help them connect to regional and global markets. News Conference: US Representatives at CPI Discuss Career & Technical School Reform.

34:30
Reps. Thompson and Krishnamoorthi co-authored the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (H.R. 2353), which reauthorizes the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. It passed the House unanimously on June 22, and it is the first major overhaul to the program since 2006. The bipartisan legislation strengthens and improves career and technical education and gives Americans the skills they need to compete for in-demand jobs. The benefit of such legislation can be witnessed first-hand at CPI in Pleasant Gap, Pa. CPI was founded in 1969 to meet the career and technical needs of high school students in the Centre Region. By combining academics with technical training and industry-recognized certifications, CPI is uniquely poised to prepare students for rapid employment and long-term career success. Reps. Thompson and Krishnamoorthi hosted the news conference at CPI with school President Dr. Richard C. Makin as well as industry experts and local business leaders. CPI will launch a new two-year degree program in November: Natural Gas Compression – CAT/Ariel Emphasis Associate of Specialized Technology. The program is in partnership with Cleveland Brothers – a Pennsylvania-based Caterpillar dealer – and Ariel Corporation, the world’s leading manufacturer of natural gas compressors. CPI is currently accepting students for a November 28, 2017 start date. It is one of only two programs of its kind nationwide. Ariel Corporation compressors and CAT engines are located in oil and gas fields throughout the world. Graduates of CPI’s Natural Gas Compressor degree program will have the opportunity to work locally, nationally, and globally. Cleveland Brothers, Ariel, and gas industry partners will be interviewing NGC students after the first term. If pre-hired by the program’s industry partners, students will receive $7,500 per year ($15,000 total) in company-sponsored tuition reimbursement.
FAIRCHILD AT-21 GUNNER BOMBER CREW TRAINER PROMOTIONAL FILM 87594

26:38
Made during WWII, this promotional film from Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation showcases the AT-21 Gunner, an ill-fated design that failed to perform its original mission -- to train bomber crews for combat service. The film starts out by mentioning the success of the Fairchild C-82 Packet cargo aircraft, and briefly shows that airplane at the 1:30 mark, before starting to focus on the Gunner. The film was directed by Robert Elwyn and produced by Gordon Knox and his Princeton Film Center. The film details the building of the plane using modern techniques including veneer sheets of wood as shown at 5:20, which are later coated with rubber and glue that is then autoclaved at 6:10. The process, known as Duramold, is identical to that used with the famed H-4 Hercules "Spruce Goose" aircraft. Duramold is a composite material process developed by Virginius E. Clark. Birch plies are impregnated with phenolic resin, such as Haskelite and laminated together in a mold under heat (280 °F, 138 °C) and pressure for use as a lightweight structural material. Similar to plywood, Duramold and other lightweight composite materials were considered critical during periods of material shortage in World War II, replacing scarce materials like aluminum alloys and steel. Metal working on the Ranger 12 engines is also shown, with many modern procedures utilized. At 13:30, aluminum fins are shown bonded to steel cylinder fins using the Alfin Process. The Fairchild AT-21 was an American World War II specialized bomber crew trainer, intended to train crews in the use of power gun turrets or a gun on a flexible mount, as well as learn to function as a member of a crew. It had a brief career as a training aircraft before modified bombers took over this role. The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) laid out a specification for a specialized bomber trainer, ordering two prototypes from Fairchild Aircraft. The XAT-13 powered by two 450 hp (336 kW) Pratt & Whitney R-1340-AN-1 radial engines, emerged as a "scaled down" bomber with a single machine gun in the glazed nose and a top turret with twin machine guns and fitted with tricycle landing gear. The concept was to have a single type that was able to duplicate the bomber crew positions from piloting, navigation, bomb aiming/dropping to aerial gunnery. The second prototype, designated the XAT-14 was similar in layout but was powered by two 520 hp (388 kW) Ranger V-770 inline inverted 12-cylinder vee-type engines. A further refinement to suit the aircraft for bombardier training with the nose gun and turret removed, led to a new designation, the XAT-14A. Both prototypes featured an unusual construction, being built from "Duramold" plastic-bonded plywood.[4] At the end of the testing period, the USAAC ordered the inline version as the AT-21 Gunner, specialized for gunnery training. The AT-21 had a crew of five, pilot, co-pilot/gunnery instructor and three pupils. Fairchild Aircraft Company built one aircraft in Hagerstown and 106 aircraft at their Burlington, North Carolina plant in 1943 and 1944, while Bellanca Aircraft built 39 at New Castle, Delaware, and McDonnell built 30 aircraft at their St. Louis plant. Both companies were enlisted to speed production and delivery to training units. The AT-21 proved to be unsuitable for use as a trainer due to vibration and oscillation tendencies as well as an inherent instability caused by the short distance between the rudders and the gull wing resulting in unacceptable yaw even when slight rudder movements were made. Not deemed suitable for its original purpose, The AT-21 was evaluated as an advanced pilot trainer. This did not work out well, due to poor single-engine performance and multiple landing gear problems. The aircraft was withdrawn from service in 1944 and was replaced by training examples of the actual aircraft in which the gunners would eventually serve. Many of the AT-21s were then relegated to target-tow duties. A small number of AT-21s survived as civilian examples, with one (s/n 42-48053 owned by Craig Cantwell) still in existence in North Texas as a "basket case" awaiting restoration. Decolonizing Language Revitalization

01:56:24
September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. April Charlo from Bitterroot Salish people and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Montana. Khelsilem Rivers is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw language revitalization activist from Vancouver. Cross Sector Conference: The Museum as Urban Planner

01:30:03
Open Engagement Pre-conference | CROSS-SECTOR April 28-29, 2016 Arts Research Center, UC Berkeley Thursday, April 28, 2016 Plenary Lecture #1: The Museum as Urban Planner with: Laura Raicovich, Queens Museum Lori Fogarty, Oakland Museum of California Chaired by: Shannon Jackson | Responses by Ben Grant (SPUR) and Deborah Fisher (A Blade of Grass) Conference Details: Whether we are imagining the role of the arts in social change, whether we are imagining new structures for sustaining the arts, artists and organizations increasingly tout the importance of the “cross-sector” partnership. What does it mean to work across non-profit, for-profit, and public sectors? How do partnerships differ depending upon the domain — in public health, cultural policy, public education, urban planning, social entrepreneurship, and more? How do artists, arts leaders, and arts organizations re-skill to establish cross-sector partnerships? What do the arts bring to such partnerships, and when do cultures clash? What new knowledge can be acquired across sectors, and when is it tempting to stay in one’s own lane? This symposium brought together artists, scholars, curators, industry leaders, community organizers, and cultural administrators to mine the goals, pragmatics, and puzzles of “cross-sector” exchange. In plenary lectures, break-outs, and workshops, we asked participants to share successful strategies and epic failures in cross-sector collaboration, exploring new practices of art-making, practitioner training, curation, cultural leadership, philanthropy, and cultural investment. Plenary speakers and session leadered include Andy and Deborah Rappaport (Founders, The Minnesota Street Project), Lori Fogarty (CEO, Oakland Museum of California), Laura Raicovich (Executive Director, Queens Museum), Deborah Fisher (Executive Director, A Blade of Grass Foundation), Ben Grant (Urban Design Policy Director, SPUR), Nora Silver (Director, Haas Center for Social Sector Leadership, UC Berkeley), Deena Chalabi (Barbara and Stephan Vermut Associate Curator of Public Dialogue, SFMOMA), Catherine Cole (Department Chair and Professor, UC Berkeley), Shannon Jackson (Director, Arts Research Center and Associate Vice Chancellor for the Arts + Design, UC Berkeley), Paul Ramírez Jonas (Artist), Kevin Bott (Associate Director, Imagining America), and many others. http://arts.berkeley.edu/cross-sector-conference/
