Bitcoin Q&A: Careers in open blockchain development?

06:00
A question from a soon-to-be computer science graduate about career options in open blockchain development. Should a young person go the corporate route or the entrepreneurial route? What benefits and risks do the options entail? Would a "traditional" job still have the lifelong guarantee of security they used to? Being willing to take risks and fail gracefully, like Bitcoin, in the early years of your life by doing work that matters to you. This question is from the November monthly Patreon session, which took place on November 17th 2018. Never before in history have we been able to acquire, record, communicate, and use information in so many different forms. Never before have we had access to such vast quantities of data of every kind. This revolution goes far beyond the limitless content that fills our lives, because information also underlies our understanding of ourselves, the natural world, and the universe. It is the key that unites fields as different as linguistics, cryptography, neuroscience, genetics, economics, and quantum mechanics. And the fact that information bears no necessary connection to meaning makes it a profound puzzle that people with a passion for philosophy have pondered for centuries. Little wonder that an entirely new science has arisen that is devoted to deepening our understanding of information and our ability to use it. Called information theory, this field has been responsible for path-breaking insights such as the following: What is information? In 1948, mathematician Claude Shannon boldly captured the essence of information with a definition that doesn’t invoke abstract concepts such as meaning or knowledge. In Shannon’s revolutionary view, information is simply the ability to distinguish reliably among possible alternatives. The bit: Atomic theory has the atom. Information theory has the bit: the basic unit of information. Proposed by Shannon’s colleague at Bell Labs, John Tukey, bit stands for “binary digit”—0 or 1 in binary notation, which can be implemented with a simple on/off switch. Everything from books to black holes can be measured in bits. Redundancy: Redundancy in information may seem like mere inefficiency, but it is a crucial feature of information of all types, including languages and DNA, since it provides built-in error correction for mistakes and noise. Redundancy is also the key to breaking secret codes. Building on these and other fundamental principles, information theory spawned the digital revolution of today, just as the discoveries of Galileo and Newton laid the foundation for the scientific revolution four centuries ago. Technologies for computing, telecommunication, and encryption are now common, and it’s easy to forget that these powerful technologies and techniques had their own Galileos and Newtons. The Science of Information: From Language to Black Holes covers the exciting concepts, history, and applications of information theory in 24 challenging and eye-opening half-hour lectures taught by Professor Benjamin Schumacher of Kenyon College. A prominent physicist and award-winning educator at one of the nation’s top liberal arts colleges, Professor Schumacher is also a pioneer in the field of quantum information, which is the latest exciting development in this dynamic scientific field. Bitcoin Q&A: How to avoid re-creating systems of control

18:40
What are the implications of blockchain projects that re-create the same financial systems of control that we currently have? Should we use banks for custodial cryptocurrency services? Are there benefits to permissioned, centralised blockchains for supply chain management, digital rights management (DRM), healthcare data, or tokens for senior citizens’ credit? Why is decentralisation of control and minimising trusted third parties in finance is more important? What should we learn from the demonetisation & Gresham's Law in India? Can we achieve our dreams without capitulating on principles? These questions are from the MOOC 9.6 session, the June monthly Patreon session, and part of the Denver talk, which took place on March 23rd, June 24th, and August 6th 2018 respectively. Andreas is a teaching fellow with the University of Nicosia. Privacy & Freedom of the Press

01:51:39
The first panel of the 2017 National Student Symposium at Columbia Law School. The topic of the Symposium is "The First Amendment in Contemporary Society." March 3-4, 2017. The Internet has made information not only much more accessible, it has allowed almost anyone to be a provider of such information. This has not been without consequence: the refusal to take down an obscene video led to an eye-popping $140 million jury verdict and the subsequent collapse of Gawker Media. Personal e-mails or national secrets can quickly turn into political ammunition through the amplification of Wikileaks. A wide range of individuals, from Dan Rather to former President Barack Obama, have criticized the spread of misinformation. They claim false information is being dressed up as legitimate online journalism with the intent to deceive and misinform. Technology CEOs have felt the pressure. For example, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is devoting considerable resources to developing methods to regulate speech on his platform— probably the most significant in the world. But, as Zuckerberg himself said, “identifying 'the truth' is complicated." This panel will explore this new reality and whether it necessitates new regulation. Will any effort be imprecise, such that protected speech will necessarily be silenced? Does such regulation go against the principles enshrined in the First Amendment? Panelists: - Prof. Richard Epstein, Laurence A. Tisch Professor of Law, New York University School of Law - Prof. Irina Manta, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Intellectual Property Law, Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University - Mr. Jameel Jaffer, Director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University - Prof. Steve Coll, Dean & Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism, Columbia Journalism School; Staff Writer, The New Yorker - Moderator: Hon. Reena Raggi, Circuit Judge, US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit

Preethi chats with Isaac J and Matheus of Decred to learn more about the hybrid proof of work/proof of stake consensus mechanism and their governance model. Join the TruStory Expert Community today https://boards.greenhouse.io/trustory/jobs/4128579002 Discussion Outline Introduction, Issac, Community Manager [00:38] Introduction, Matheus, Developer [01:48] What is Decred? How does the hybrid proof of consensus algorithm work? [03:53] Decred’s 60/30/10 block reward split and validator ticket voting system [05:30] When selected, what happens if the five randomly chosen proof of state validators are not online? [06:49] What’s the rationale for choosing a hybrid model instead of solely a proof of work or proof of stake? How is the hybrid model more deterrent to majority attacks? [08:00] What happens if many competing blocks are produced in parallel? Does the majority selection still work in that case? [12:27] In Decred, with reward chains, is it deterministic or probabilistic with the five ticket vote? [14:11] How does Decred handle malicious activity? [17:17] Besides the majority attack benefit, what other benefits do you envision this hybrid model having? [17:50] What are the downsides of having both on-chain and off-chain governance? [24:07] How volunteers, contributors and contract workers contribute to the Decred community [28:20] Decred is trying to be a Store of Value (SoV); is Decred directly competing with Bitcoin? [34:14] How Decred’s ensures that stake is not centralized through proof of stake model [36:10] Decred airdrop campaign [40:28] Lightning Network integration, decentralization of management funds from treasury, Decred’s recent proposal for decentralized exchange, and Decred’s long-term goal of having a decentralized autonomous entity [43:41] Do you look at the stakers as having the real power to make decisions relative to the miners or users? [46:02] How Decred attempts to both prevent and handle bugs and malicious chains [50:30] Lightning Network’s role in scalability [55:16] Levels of involvement in Decred’s community and Decred’s Contract Clearance proposal [57:10] Connect with the Decred Community: https://decred.org/community/ Connect with us: If you have questions, post em to our Discourse: https://discourse.trustory.io/ If you find false claims, @ us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/isTrustory If you wanna get updates on TruStory, check out our website: https://www.trustory.io/

Bitcoin Q&A: Software distribution security

13:37
How is Bitcoin software securely developed and delivered? What is Gitian? What happens if your client software is compromised and how is this prevented? How is consensus reached on new upgrades? What are the different consensus groups? How are developers compensated for their work? Are there other compatible Bitcoin clients available besides the Bitcoin Core reference client? These questions are from the MOOC 7.2, 9.3, and 9.5 sessions, which took place on February 26th 2017, March 2nd and March 16th 2018 respectively. Bitcoin Q&A: The Switzerland of currencies

08:24
Can cryptocurrencies have an inflationary monetary policy? How do cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin fit into the global currency wars? Initially there wasn't enough demand in the economy, but as the reward diminishes over time, bitcoin will have a deflationary monetary policy and simulate a scarce resource like gold. But you can simulate whatever monetary policy you want. Digital currencies are now part of the currency wars, because they are giving people all over the world a choice to exit the currency wars, one of the most powerful choices you can make. Within the currency, Bitcoin will act as the Switzerland of currencies. Even if governments start making them illegal to use, this does not destroy demand. In practice, cryptocurrency use has gone up after a country has banned it. Governments are failing in their role of delivering the fundamental functions of currency. When there is a dramatic spiral in an economy, the state takes the entire country hostage. People often haven't thought about money as a language or a technology, constructs that can be created and improved by anyone. So what if you can exit? It changes everything. The first and second questions are from a talk which took place on July 7th 2017 at a Bloktex event hosted by the Wisma BeeOn Group in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: https://antonopoulos.com/event/the-future-of-money-kuala-lumpur-malaysia/ Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/HaJ1hvon0E0 The third question is from a talk which took place on December 3rd 2016 at the Coinscrum {MiniCon}, hosted by Imperial College in London, England: https://www.meetup.com/coinscrum/events/235709468/ Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/Bu5Mtvy97-4 RELATED: The 21 million supply cap - https://youtu.be/AABkJ55Zz3A The Killer App: Engineering the Properties of Money - https://youtu.be/MxIrc1rxhyI Price volatility, pegging, stability - https://youtu.be/9KPyflyHP6s Divisibility and deflationary monetary policy - https://youtu.be/xhLgxX_wU6E Will governments ban cryptocurrencies? - https://youtu.be/LIQkuF_I5Xo Unstoppable code - https://youtu.be/AQx3E3F8Kz4 Is Bitcoin a democracy? - https://youtu.be/TC3Hq76UT5g The War on Cash and Crypto - https://youtu.be/BAlRKfvBnvw The revolution in trust - https://youtu.be/iWfpxB3HZOY Global financial crisis - https://youtu.be/JU3gNC_ZPKM Fungibility, privacy, anonymity - https://youtu.be/y3s8c7YDtXU Solar energy and mining in space - https://youtu.be/cusakcpa8AM Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: Altcoins and specialisation

07:06
What other crypto-assets and technologies interest you besides Bitcoin and Ethereum? I'm interested in the cryptocurrencies that are pioneering privacy and anonymity, such as Monero and Zcash. I'm interested in resource-sharing ones as well. It is less likely that they will be eclipsed by Bitcoin and its second layers as long as they maintain that privacy-conscious differentiation. Is Litecoin still "the silver to bitcon's [digital] gold"? Litecoin often follows the core roadmap, but it has filled a niche of rapid development that acts as a testing ground for innovations that may end up in Bitcoin. I think there is room for multiple cryptocurrencies that have less adoption overall but are "apex" in certain categories. Calm Bitcoin. Litecoin and Ethereum Classic surge! Steemit news. FUD Friday again?

15:56
The Litecoin surge can't be explained but the ETC surge may be because of a Tweet about Barry Silbert. Bitcoin has been calm lately and you should be calm also even if we experience a third "FUD Friday" in a row. Have a strong hand and don't panic like the reader I quote in the video. This Week in Bitcoin will be at 7:30PM EST on Friday- Scheduled guests are Tai Zen, Alex Fortin, and Joel Valenzuela. Goo gle CEO Sundar Pichai says artificial intelligence is like fire

02:03
Goo.gle CEO Sundar Pichai says artificial intelligence is like fire. In an interview with Recode and MSNBC, Pichai described artificial intelligence as something akin to electricity or fire: useful but dangerous. It’s no exaggeration to say that 2017 was the year of AI. Not only did we see the birth of Bixby, but existing AI assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant finally made their way to the mainstream through smart speakers. In fact, AI is expected to grow substantially over the next few years, reaching a global worth of $23.4 billion by 2025. However, as more manufacturers rely on AI technology, there are increasing concerns, ranging from practical to ethical issues. Thankfully, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai is also cognizant of the fact that with such great technology comes a need for caution. In an interview with Kara Swisher from Recode and Ari Melber from MSNBC, Pichai stated, “AI is one of the most important things that humanity is working on. It’s more profound than, I don’t know, electricity or fire.” He continued, “[While fire is good] it kills people, too. They learn to harness fire for the benefits of humanity, but we have to overcome its downsides, too.”
