Seabed Mining in the Deep Sea

57:45
(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) 0:16 - Main Presentation - Lisa Levin 28:24 - Audience Discussion Given the growing demand for deep sea metals created by electronic and green technologies, scientists are faced with decisions about whether to engage in baseline and impacts research that enables development of a new extraction industry, and whether to contribute expertise to the development of environmental protections and guidelines. Lisa A. Levin, distinguished professor of biological oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, addresses the ethical and societal challenges of exploitation in a relatively unknown realm. Sea bed mining scraping the bottom of the barrel

14:48
Out feature story this week takes us on a rather sobering underwater expedition into the dark world of seabed phosphate mining. The deep ocean floor, admittedly, is not a habitat we generally give much thought to. But in mankind’s quest for resources and mineral wealth, companies have now turned to this relatively unexplored region, and its phosphates they’re after, a resource in relatively limited supply on Earth. Is the supply of phosphates really so limited that it’s worth scraping our ocean bed completely bare? With our global seas, sea life and climate already in serious trouble, this action certainly seems like a bridge too far. Bertus went to see if he could get to the bottom of this matter.

Fishing for a Sustainable Future

01:00:59
This panel discusses the importance of fisheries to Pacific Island nations. Panelists include Transform Aqorau, CEO of the Parties of the Nauru Agreement Office (PNAO); Kate Barclay, Associate professor, University of Technology Sydney and; John Virdin, Director, Ocean & Coastal Policy; Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University. The global fish market is big business – worth a staggering USD 137.7 billion annually. The management of the world’s fisheries, like many of our precious natural resources, is a challenging and complex system, driven by factors of territory, politics, culture and revenue. In the Pacific, one the biggest challenges ensuring the long-term sustainability and viability of coastal and ocean fisheries – both as a source of food and a source of significant income. A recent increase in foreign fishing vessels in Pacific waters is pushing Pacific Island governments to consider policies which will ensure a greater share of fishing revenue is captured, while protecting the region’s environment. Throughout the discussion, the panelists consider many issues, including how Pacific Island countries can capture a greater share of the revenue earned from fish captured in their waters; and whether regional cooperation between nations can effectively drive reform.

A Game-based Experiential Approach to Teaching Professional Ethics

01:04:00
Unlike the traditional approach to ethics education that involves reading, writing, and discussing moral reasoning in the abstract, our new pedagogy uses experiential games to position students in situations that require first-hand ethical decision-making. The games allow students to personally explore what factors prevent them from living up to their moral ideals, and what strategies are effective for coordinating groups to address collective-action problems, where personal incentives are at odds with the group’s best interests. Each game consists of complete and independent modules that can be combined to form undergraduate & graduate level courses in sustainability ethics. Furthermore, both the modules and the course are deliverable in a synchronous (or semi-synchronous) fashion at multiple Universities, wherein students at multiple campuses interact on-line through game play. The games can also be played entirely in-class, in blended learning environments (online and in-class), or completely online. This novel multi-campus form of instruction allows students to be mentored by multiple instructors from different disciplines. Also, when played internationally, students are exposed to the inequality of globalization since they engage directly with peers from distant places and experience first-hand whether they are willing to treat them with as much respect as their own classmates, or whether distance discourages moral behavior. To date, three full courses have been delivered at Rochester Institute of Technology and Arizona State University, while modules have been adopted in engineering, environmental science, and business courses at Mesa Community College, Michigan State University, University of Colorado -Boulder, Purdue University, Northeastern University, University of Arizona, University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez, Dartmouth College, Mountains of the Moon University (Uganda), the Management Development Institute (India) and Desert Vista High School (Phoenix AZ). The project has trained nearly two dozen faculty and a dozen graduate and undergrad students to deliver the modules in two workshops. Moreover, the grant allowed for both student training and professional development, as it funded a four-year PhD dissertation in Sustainability as well as an undergraduate research experience. Dissemination of results is taking place both through traditional modes (several academic conferences, multiple public lectures, workshops, & journal articles) and through digital media, including on-line articles in Slate, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and other web-based media. Experience in several instructional contexts reinforce the hypothesis that the game-based pedagogies move students from passive to active, apathetic to emotionally invested, predictable to surprising, and from narratively closed to experimentally open. We’ve also been surprised at the ability of some groups to behave cooperatively, despite the inherent incentives to act otherwise. We attribute this success to the moral suasion of ethical leaders in our classrooms, and we argue that the importance of our findings extends beyond the classroom by offering potential models of cooperation for addressing real-world resource management challenges. Furthermore, an invention disclosure has been created for the Tragedy of the Commons Game (a.k.a the Pisces Game, which is our most successful and widely used game) that will be the first product of a spin-out company called 'Experiential Sustainability Ethics Training Games, LLC' (XSET Games). The Pisces Game simulates dilemmas where decisions must be made about depletion or preservation of resources held in the public commons, such as the problem of overfishing occurring in Lake Victoria -- the second largest freshwater lake in the world. In the game, players fish from a shared lake and make decisions related to conservation, consumption, capital investment, trading, or other transfers. XSET Games is unveiling a smartphone interface of the game on November 18th, 2013 at the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Annual Conference in Nashville. Participants are expected to obtain a greater understanding of the human dimensions of sustainability problems, such as diverse values and worldviews, social media skills related to leadership, teamwork, negotiation, and empathy, and (if the classroom experience is any indication) may discover relevant insights into their own or others’ moral character.

Australia asylum seekers riot at PNG detention camp; one dead, 77 injured

Originally published on February 19, 2014 Sign up for a free trial of News Direct's animated news graphics at http://newsdirect.nma.com.tw/Reuters.aspx ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Clashes late Monday (February 17) at a detention center for Australia asylum seekers on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island have left one person dead and 77 injured. Australia's Immigration Minister said on Tuesday (February 18) that the riot began as detainees attempted to break out of the facility used to process asylum seekers hoping to settle in Australia. The incident is the second this week at the detention center on Manus Island, a site holding over 1000 asylum seekers. One asylum seeker was killed by gunfire in the clashes, while 77 people were injured. Another individual was shot in the buttocks and is being treated in hospital. The facility on Manus Island is part of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot's policy of diverting asylum seekers from traveling to Australia by boat. Australian government vessels now escort boats of asylum seekers to facilities in Papua New Guinea after a campaign pledge by Abbot that no one arriving by boat will be granted asylum. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, are critical of conditions at the processing camp and Reuters reports that an advocate for the detainees disputed the government's claims about the riot, saying it was sparked by Manus Island residents and police attacking the refugee camp. Reuters reports, however, that the British outsourcing giant G4S, the firm responsible for security at the facility, claimed no local villagers were involved, saying in a statement, "Claims that the transferees breached the fence following internal attacks on them by local residents are unfounded." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation's News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. Hon. Christopher Weeramantry - Air date Nov. 1987

58:06
Judge Christopher Weeramantry was a Judge of the International Court of Justice from 1991 to 2000, and was Vice-President of the Court from 1997 to 2000, presiding in that capacity over several important cases before the Court, including the case on the illegality of the use and threatened use of nuclear arms. While on the court he has written numerous judgments seeking to advance the frontiers of international law and to make it more multi-cultural and future-oriented. These judgments have made a profound impact on the content and direction of international law. Prior to joining the Court, Judge Weeramantry was a Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, a Professor of Law in Australia, and Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry which probed international responsibility for phosphate mining on the island of Nauru. The Report of the Commission led to the first claim before the International Court of Justice by a dependent territory seeking compensation for damage done to it during occupation by a trustee power. Apart from treatises on law, Weeramantry has written extensively in twenty books and over a hundred articles on such matters as apartheid, the impact of the world's religions on law and human rights, the impact of technology on human rights, third world legal problems and the philosophy of law. Judge Weeramantry is a Doctor of Laws and a Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) of the University of London.

SCP-1461 is an English manor (circa 1890) with attached sub-levels. It came to the Foundation's attention on November 1941, when the dwelling and its sub-level facilities vanished, then rematerialized after an eleven day period of absence. The surface portion of SCP-1461 is a two-level dwelling with twelve bedrooms, four baths, three studies, a main foyer/ballroom, a library, a kitchen, and a pantry-basement. Most of these rooms were converted into simple barracks prior to Foundation acquisition and are believed to have been dwellings for the cult. Site-6 Staff have reinforced the structure and use the available space to house monitoring rooms and security forces. No anomalous activity has ever originated from the manor itself. Ocean thermal energy conversion

56:24
Ocean thermal energy conversion uses the temperature difference between cooler deep and warmer shallow or surface seawaters to run a heat engine and produce useful work, usually in the form of electricity. OTEC is a base load electricity generation system. However, since the temperature differential is small, the thermal efficiency is low, making its economic feasibility a challenge. Among ocean energy sources, OTEC is one of the continuously available renewable energy resources that could contribute to base-load power supply. The resource potential for OTEC is considered to be much larger than for other ocean energy forms [World Energy Council, 2000]. Up to 88,000 TWh/yr of power could be generated from OTEC without affecting the ocean’s thermal structure [Pelc and Fujita, 2002]. This video is targeted to blind users. Niue

33:00
Niue (/ˈnjuːeɪ/ NEW-ay; Niuean: Niuē) is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi) northeast of New Zealand within the triangle formed by Tonga to the west, Samoa to the north, and the Cook Islands to the east. Its land area is 260 square kilometres (100 sq mi) and its population, predominantly Polynesian, is around 1,400. They commonly refer to the island as "The Rock", a reference to the traditional name "Rock of Polynesia". Niue, whose capital city is Alofi, is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand, and most of its diplomatic relations are conducted by New Zealand on its behalf. Niueans are New Zealand citizens, and Queen Elizabeth II is head of state in her capacity as Queen of New Zealand. 90–95% of Niuean people live in New Zealand, along with about 70% of the speakers of the Niuean language. Beyond social justice: Dorothy Hoddinott

56:03
In this lecture recoded at ANU on the 26th of August 2015, Dorothy Hoddinott delivers the 2015 Herbert & Valmae Freilich Foundation Annual Lecture in Bigotry and Tolerance. The idea of social justice is not new when we are talking about education. What is new and increasingly urgent in the light of an unstable world and regressive government policies and changes to the law in this country is the need to reframe the discourse from social justice to human rights. This talk is about human rights in education, what that means for students and schools, and what that means for all of us. My focus will particularly be the human rights of young refugees and asylum seekers. At my school in western Sydney, one in every six students is an asylum seeker, either in community detention or on a bridging visa. Under current government policies, few of these young people have a future. What can ordinary Australians do about this situation, which flies in the face of the values we believe are intrinsic to our national identity and the aspirations we hold for our own children? How can schools contribute to social cohesion and help prevent the radicalisation of young people with nowhere to go? Dorothy Hoddinott is one of Australia’s most widely recognised school educators. She is the principal of Holroyd High School in Western Sydney, where six out of every ten students are refugees, and one in every six students is an asylum seeker. Dorothy has a deep, life-long commitment to social justice and is a strong public advocate for the human rights of refugees and asylum seekers, and those of children, particularly disadvantaged children. In recognition of her work, she was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2008, and, in 2014, she was awarded the Australian Human Rights Medal. She is a Fellow of Senate of the University of Sydney, and is currently Pro-Chancellor of the University.

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Jarvis Island Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. The capital and largest urban agglomeration is the city of Caracas. It has a territorial extension of 916,445 km2 (353,841 sq mi). The continental territory is bordered on the north by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Colombia, Brazil on the south, Trinidad and Tobago to the north-east and on the east by Guyana. With this last country, the Venezuelan government maintains a claim for Guayana Esequiba over an area of 159,542 km2 (61,600 sq mi). For its maritime areas, it exercises sovereignty over 71,295 km2 (27,527 sq mi) of territorial waters, 22,224 km2 (8,581 sq mi) in its contiguous zone, 471,507 km2 (182,050 sq mi) of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean under the concept of exclusive economic zone, and 99,889 km2 (38,567 sq mi) of continental shelf. This marine area borders those of 13 states. The country has extremely high biodiversity and is ranked seventh in the world's list of nations with the most number of species. There are habitats ranging from the Andes Mountains in the west to the Amazon basin rain-forest in the south via extensive llanos plains, the Caribbean coast and the Orinoco River Delta in the east. The territory now known as Venezuela was colonized by Spain in 1522 amid resistance from indigenous peoples. In 1811, it became one of the first Spanish-American territories to declare independence, which was not securely established until 1821, when Venezuela was a department of the federal republic of Gran Colombia. It gained full independence as a country in 1830. During the 19th century, Venezuela suffered political turmoil and autocracy, remaining dominated by regional caudillos (military strongmen) until the mid-20th century. Since 1958, the country has had a series of democratic governments. Economic shocks in the 1980s and 1990s led to several political crises, including the deadly Caracazo riots of 1989, two attempted coups in 1992, and the impeachment of President Carlos Andrés Pérez for embezzlement of public funds in 1993. A collapse in confidence in the existing parties saw the 1998 election of former coup-involved career officer Hugo Chávez and the launch of the Bolivarian Revolution. The revolution began with a 1999 Constituent Assembly, where a new Constitution of Venezuela was written. This new constitution officially changed the name of the country to Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (Spanish: República Bolivariana de Venezuela). The sovereign state is a federal ...

The term "coconut" (or the archaic "cocoanut") can refer to the whole coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which botanically is a drupe, not a nut. The term is derived from the 16th-century Portuguese and Spanish word coco meaning "head" or "skull" after the three indentations on the coconut shell that resemble facial features.Coconuts are known for their versatility of uses, ranging from food to cosmetics. The inner flesh of the mature seed forms a regular part of the diets of many people in the tropics and subtropics. Coconuts are distinct from other fruits because their endosperm contains a large quantity of clear liquid, called "coconut milk" in the literature, and when immature, may be harvested for their potable "coconut water", also called "coconut juice". Mature, ripe coconuts can be used as edible seeds, or processed for oil and plant milk from the flesh, charcoal from the hard shell, and coir from the fibrous husk. Dried coconut flesh is called copra, and the oil and milk derived from it are commonly used in cooking – frying in particular – as well as in soaps and cosmetics. The hard shells, fibrous husks and long pinnate leaves can be used as material to make a variety of products for furnishing and decorating. The coconut also has cultural and religious significance in certain societies, particularly in India, where it is used in Hindu rituals.

Apsny [apʰsˈnɨ]; Georgian: აფხაზეთი Apxazeti [ɑpʰxɑzɛtʰi]; Russian: Абха́зия, tr. Abházija, IPA: [ɐˈpxazʲɪjə]), officially the Republic of Abkhazia, is a de facto and partially recognized republic on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, south of the Greater Caucasus mountains, in northwestern Georgia. It covers 8,660 square kilometres (3,340 sq mi) and has a population of around 240,000. Its capital is Sukhumi. The separatist Abkhazian polity, formally the Republic of Abkhazia, is recognised as a state by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria. While Georgia lacks control over Abkhazia, the Georgian government and most United Nations member states legally consider Abkhazia part of Georgia, whose constitution designates the area as the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. The status of Abkhazia is a central issue of the Georgian–Abkhazian conflict and Georgia–Russia relations. The region had autonomy within Soviet Georgia at the time when the Soviet Union began to disintegrate in the late 1980s. Simmering ethnic tensions between the Abkhaz—the region's "titular ethnicity"—and Georgians—the largest single ethnic group at that time—culminated in the 1992–1993 War in Abkhazia which resulted in Georgia's loss of control of most of Abkhazia, the de facto independence of Abkhazia, and the ethnic cleansing of Georgians from Abkhazia. Despite the 1994 ceasefire agreement and years of negotiations, the dispute remains unresolved. The long-term presence of a United Nations Observer Mission and a Russian-led Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) peacekeeping force failed to prevent the flare-up of violence on several occasions. In August 2008, Abkhaz forces fought against Georgian forces during the Russo-Georgian War, which led to the formal recognition of Abkhazia by Russia, the annulment of the 1994 ceasefire agreement, and the termination of the UN mission. On 28 August 2008, the Parliament of Georgia declared Abkhazia a Russian-occupied territory, a stance supported by the vast majority of the international community.

Words at War: Lifeline / Lend Lease Weapon for Victory / The Navy Hunts the CGR 3070

01:28:00
The United States Merchant Marine is the fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant vessels, operated by either the government or the private sector, that engage in commerce or transportation of goods and services in and out of the navigable waters of the United States. The Merchant Marine is responsible for transporting cargo and passengers during peace time. In time of war, the Merchant Marine is an auxiliary to the Navy, and can be called upon to deliver troops and supplies for the military. Merchant mariners move cargo and passengers between nations and within the United States, operate and maintain deep-sea merchant ships, tugboats, towboats, ferries, dredges, excursion vessels, and other waterborne craft on the oceans, the Great Lakes, rivers, canals, harbors, and other waterways. As of 2006, the United States merchant fleet numbered 465 ships[2] and approximately 100,000 members. Seven hundred ships owned by American interests but registered, or flagged, in other countries are not included in this number. The federal government maintains fleets of merchant ships via organizations such as Military Sealift Command and the National Defense Reserve Fleet. In 2004, the federal government employed approximately 5% of all American water transportation workers.[3] In the 19th and 20th centuries, various laws fundamentally changed the course of American merchant shipping. These laws put an end to common practices such as flogging and shanghaiing, and increased shipboard safety and living standards. The United States Merchant Marine is also governed by several international conventions to promote safety and prevent pollution. The merchant marine is a civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Navy, but not a uniformed service, except in times of war when, in accordance with the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, mariners are considered military personnel. In a time of "national emergency", the President can permanently seize any merchant marine vessel in return for fair compensation, or commandeer it for temporary use with no compensation if returned in reasonable condition. Mariners are well represented in the visual arts. Merchant seaman Johnny Craig was already a working comic book artist before he joined up, but Ernie Schroeder would not start drawing comics until after returning home from World War II. Seaman Haskell Wexler won two Academy Awards, the latter for a biography of his shipmate Woody Guthrie. Merchant sailors have also made a splash in the world of sport. Drew Bundini Brown was Muhammad Ali's assistant trainer and cornerman, and Joe Gold went made his fortune as the bodybuilding and fitness guru of Gold's Gym. In football, Dan Devine and Heisman Trophy winner Frank Sinkwich excelled. Seamen Jim Bagby, Jr. and Charlie Keller played in Major League Baseball. In track and field, seamen Cornelius Johnson and Jim Thorpe both won Olympic medals, though Thorpe did not get his until thirty years after his death. Writers Richard Henry Dana, Jr., Ralph Ellison, Herman Melville, and Jack Vance and were merchant mariners, as were prominent members of the Beat movement: Allen Ginsberg, Herbert Huncke, Bob Kaufman, Jack Kerouac, and Dave Van Ronk. Peter Baynham, the coauthor of the film Borat, and Donn Pearce, who wrote the movie Cool Hand Luke, were formerly merchant mariners. Filmmaker Oliver Stone won multiple Academy Awards. WWII-era merchant mariners played well-known television characters. The list includes Raymond Bailey (who played Milburn Drysdale on The Beverly Hillbillies); Peter Falk (who played the title character on Columbo); James Garner (who played Jim Rockford on The Rockford Files); Jack Lord (who played Steve McGarrett on the original Hawaii Five-0); Carroll O'Connor (who played Archie Bunker on All in the Family); Denver Pyle (who played Uncle Jesse Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard); and Clint Walker (who played Cheyenne Bodie on Cheyenne). Songwriter and lyricist Jack Lawrence was a mariner during World War II and wrote the official United States Merchant Marine song, "Heave Ho! My Lads, Heave Ho!" while a young lieutenant stationed at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, in 1943. Writer/businessman Robert Kiyosaki claimed to have been a mariner. Paul Teutul, Sr., the founder of Orange County Choppers and Orange County Ironworks, was a merchant mariner during the Vietnam War. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Merchant_Marine

Political Concepts: The Trump Edition (Saturday PM Session 2)

52:04
Political Concepts at Brown: A Critical Lexicon in the Making The goal of Political Concepts is to serve as a platform for revising, inventing, and experimenting with concepts while exploring the political dimension of their use and dissemination. Participants operate under the assumption that our era urgently needs a revised political lexicon that would help us better understand the world in which we live and act, and that the humanities at large can and should contribute toward such a revision. In the past, some of the participants revised key political concepts while others showed the political work done by terms and common nouns that are not usually considered “political.” The 2017–2018 conference was dedicated to analyzing and contesting the transformation of the American political system under the presidency of Donald Trump. Moderator: Susan Buck-Morss, Distinguished Professor of Political Sciences, The Graduate Center, City University of New York Presenters: Uchronia – Claire Brault, Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Political Science, Brown University (speaker chose not to have her talk filmed) Water – Françoise Vergès, Chair of Global South(s), Collège d'études mondiales, Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'homme, and Visiting Professor, Cogut Institute for the Humanities, Brown University Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 Brown University
