NOTE: Although this video shows an up-close look at the blasting process, NEVER go near an active surface mine or blast site without Federal training and permission. FYI, the white bags are Emulsified Ammonium Nitrate. The read cap is TNT and the silver rod that is connected to it by the yellow wire is the blasting cap, it's what ignites the shot. The white pebbles that are emptied into the blast holes by the powder trucks are the main explosive- "ANFO" or Ammonium Nitrate, which is a mixture of fertilizer and diesel fuel. Once the holes are filled with explosives, rock fines or "stemming" is pushed back in the holes and packed down to keep the explosives under pressure. After all the holes are loaded and rigged up, it's time for the fireworks! And remember kids, don't try this at home! Want to see more Blasting? You’ve heard of fracking, and you’re pretty sure lots of people don’t like it, but do you know how it actually works? Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/hydraulic-fracking.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/M5kx1i Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/FbuzEW Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com Fracking. You’ve heard of it. You know it’s controversial. But you might not know what it actually involves. Never fear: We’re here to put some fracking knowledge in your brain. Fracking is the delightfully cheeky-sounding nickname for Hydraulic Fracturing... which sounds a little bit less delightful and more like something you do to your enemies in Starcraft. But no! It is something we do to rocks. In the simplest terms, hydraulic fracturing is a way of getting more of the valuable fluids, like oil and natural gas, out of geologic formations under the ground. Deep under earth’s surface, there are deposits of rock that have huge reserves of oil and natural gas within them. But these fossil fuels aren’t like big lakes where you can just stick a straw in and suck. No, these reserves of oil and natural gas are found locked up in pores distributed throughout vast layers of rock, like shale. So how do you get them out at a reasonable pace? Let’s look at a typical fracking setup for something like shale gas: You start with a deep, vertical well, drilling a hole down to the level of the shale you want to mine. The depth will vary, but just for example, one company claims its average fracking well depth is 7,700 feet. That’s deep: almost one and a half miles, or about 2.3 kilometers. When you’re at the right depth, you take a 90-degree turn and continue to drill horizontally, parallel to the target rock layer. This horizontal section of the well can also travel thousands of feet. Now here’s where the “fracturing” comes in. First, you open up holes in the horizontal section of the pipe. Then, you vigorously push a liquid cocktail known as fracking fluid down into the borehole under high pressure. This fracking fluid is usually a mixture of water, some chemical additives -- like acids to help dissolve the rock, and gels to thicken the fluid -- and finally, solid particles called proppants – we’ll get to those in a second. When the mixture reaches the horizontal section of the pipe, it bleeds out through the holes into the surrounding rock, and the extremely high pressure causes the rock to form tons of little fractures, or cracks. Through these cracks, the reserves of fossil fuels contained in the rock can escape into the well to be pumped back up to the surface. What once was entombed in ancient rock is now on the way to powering your car or heating the water for your next shower. And those proppants I mentioned, which are often just grains of sand, help “prop” the cracks in the rock open, so the Earth’s precious bodily fluids continue to escape into the well without the miners applying continuous pressure. So that’s how it works, but then there’s the entirely separate question of whether fracking is a good idea. It’s controversial in many parts of the world. Some people claim it consumes too much fresh water, and worry about what will be done with the fracking fluid after it’s been used. And some opponents wonder if it will create earthquakes, or cause chemical contaminants to leak into our groundwater. Click the link to subscribe: http://bit.ly/FactsVerse Shawn worked as a heavy equipment operator for Canada's largest energy company, Suncor. His job had him working all over Canada. This job had him working at the Millennium Mine. It is part of the Athabasca Oil Sands project in eastern Alberta. Shawn's job was difficult, but the pay was good. Business was booming, and he enjoyed going to work each day. The Athabasca Oil Sands are deposits that are formed from the remnants of ancient marine creatures and plants that had died off hundreds of millions of years ago. Time caused them to turn to fossils. Close to 70 percent of the world's oil sand deposits are in northern Alberta, and Athabasca is the largest one. This area is not considered an oil reserve because refining the sand wouldn't be profitable. Work began in the Athabasca site in 1967. It wasn't until 2000 that business really started booming. People were flocking to the town of Fort McMurray looking for work in the oil sands, working with natural gas, and on pipelines. This is what drew Shawn to the area in the first place. He was looking for work, and he got plenty of it. Shawn was assigned to an area where deposits could be extracted through surface mining. He would go to work and operate his excavator. All day, he would dig through layers of rock, dirt, and sand. Later, they would be filtered to extract valuable bitumen. On most days, it was monotonous work. On this day, the monotony was broken when he came across something shocking. Shawn was digging like he did each day when he hit something hard. It was much harder than the normal rock that he excavated. He stopped digging and emptied his bucket into the next pit. He checked to see what he hit, and it was walnut colored rock. He had never seen anything like this before, and he knew it was important. He turned off his excavator, and he called his supervisor, Mike Gratton. Shawn and Mike looked at the weird lumps wondering what they could be. When Shawn flipped one of the rocks over, they did a double take. There were even rows of light-brown circles with gray stone in between. Shawn had been digging for 12-years, and he never saw anything like this. Mike told Shawn that they had to have the rock examined by a professional. Mike contacted the museum of paleontology which was located 420-miles away from the site. The museum thought that there was merit and they set Dr. Donald Henderson and a veteran technician, Darren Tanke to check things out. Suncor sent a private jet for them to get to the mine. When they arrived, they discovered that it could be a dinosaur fossil. Getting the fossil separated from the rest of the rock wasn't easy. They each worked 12-hour shifts to get them separated. When the team whittled the rock down to a 15,000-pound rock, they had to get it out of the hole. They dug two tunnels beneath the block of stone and place wood beams inside. This made it possible for them to whittle the rest of the rock down. The first time they tried to lift the rock out, it collapsed under the weight. Hoping to save the remaining pieces, they covered them with burlap and plaster for safe travel. They were then loaded to a truck. It wasn't easy to separate the fossil from the rock. It took the team five years and over 7,000 hours to finally free the fossil. It turned out that it was a dinosaur fossil. It was very well preserved complete with scales, armor, and visible skin. It came from the Cretaceous period, and it was a nodosaur. It was the best-preserved fossil the museum had ever seen, and finally, they could put it on display for the public. All of the hours that the team worked finally paid off. This guy finds ancient relic, but when he flips it over the weirdest thing happens. He found a fossil that had been hidden from the world for thousands of years. Shawn went to work that day never expecting to find anything special. In all of his years working as a heavy equipment operator, he never found anything significant. He says that he is thrilled that he suspected something when he hit that rock. If he hadn't and continued digging, this incredible fossil could have been lost forever. A quarry is the same thing as an open-pit mine from which minerals are extracted, open to the Earth's surface. Another type of mine, a sub-surface mine, consists of underground tunnels or shafts. The most common purpose of quarries is to extract stonefor building materials. Quarries have been used for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians built the Great Pyramids with massivelimestone and granite blocks cut by hand from nearby quarries. Each of these blocks weighs many tons. In ancient Rome, slaves and criminals were often forced to do the extremely difficult work of cutting stones in marble, granite, and limestone quarries. Today, people use mechanical tools to mine quarries, including drilling equipment, blasting equipment, and hauling equipment. Industrial drills with diamond tips are used to cut into hard rock. Some miners use explosives to blast away unwanted material to access the desired rock. Finally, materials are hauled away by enormousmining trucks. Some mining trucks can carry more than 350 tons of material.

Yes its true! General Motors developed the Titan in response to the need for more efficient haul trucks by open pit mine operators. GM believed that a general decrease in mineral ore quality combined with a projected need to mine tar shale and tar sands would increase the quantity of ore hauled by surface mine operators' trucks, worldwide. Terex put the 33-19 "Titan" into service with Kaiser Steel at its iron mine at Eagle Mountain, California, in January 1975. The 33-19 "Titan" experienced frequent downtime, but over the course of its four years of service at the Eagle Mountain mine, the 33-19 "Titan" hauled approximately 3.5 million tons of earth.

Dr. Shao-Meng Li Differences between Measured and Reported Volatile Organic Compound Emissions from Oil Sands Facilities in Alberta, Canada Large-scale oil production from oil sands deposits in Alberta, Canada has raised concerns about environmental impacts, such as the magnitude of air pollution emissions. In this presentation, results on volatile organic compound (VOC) emission rates based on the 2013 airborne measurements over the oil sands surface mining facilities will be given. Individual emission rates for 73-93 VOCs for each of four surface mining facilities were determined using a combination of the Topdown Emission Rate Retrieval Algorithm applied to PTR-ToF-MS measurements and the emission ratios for a large number of VOCs determined from canister samples. The aggregate emission rate (ERVOC) of the VOCs ranged from 49.9±14.0 to 69.5±22.1 tonnes/day depending on the facility. These emission rates, of both the aggregate VOCs and individual species, were compared to those reported to the Canadian National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI). The comparison showed notable differences, indicating that currently accepted approximation methods generally underestimate VOC emissions. Potential reasons for the observed differences will be discussed.

Cedar Lake Mining, an Alabama coal mine operation, recently tried out the Titan STL3 Low Sidewall (LSW) tires on their Cat wheel loaders. With a larger rim diameter and smaller sidewall than comparable standard tires, the LSW design provides greater stability and breakout force for loaders, which results in efficiency and improved productivity.

A trip on Highway 285 between Fort Stockton, Texas, and Carlsbad, New Mexico, is both fascinating and horrifying for the average commuter in the US desert Southwest. Read the full article: http://go.spe.org/yts2401 The 140-mile stretch of two-lane road can take hours to traverse on a given day as trucks hauling crude oil, sand, water, chemicals, and petroleum equipment overload the battered, sun-fried pavement. The mostly flat, dusty landscape is populated by drilling rigs, workover rigs, and gas flares as far as the eye can see. Even on the highway’s best day, most traffic laws are ignored as oilfield workers in pickup trucks race from site to site. The industrial chaos along the corridor serves as a snapshot of the now multiyear industry boom in the Delaware Basin and greater, 75,000-sq-mile Permian Basin. Keeping track of it all has become a massive challenge for operators, service firms, and midstream companies that make the basin move. They work in an environment that is changing daily, and they can’t afford to be caught by surprise when hydraulically fracturing a well, building infrastructure, delivering equipment to a remote area, or prospecting for new business. An emerging solution: an intelligent, continually updated view from above—or satellite imagery analytics. Companies such as Sourcewater, Planet, and Westwood Global Energy Group are stepping up to monitor the world’s busiest oil play by leveraging relatively inexpensive satellite technology and machine learning. Application of satellite imagery in the oil and gas industry is nothing new. It has been used by companies to monitor remote facilities. Market observers have used the technology to assess global oil supplies by tracking tanker traffic and storage levels. The World Bank has used it to estimate emissions from the flaring of natural gas and oil output by the Islamic State. The real breakthrough is in merging this capability with advanced analytics to aid planning for development, production, and logistics while providing competitor intelligence and market research. Development is still in the early stages as companies refine their models to produce the most reliable information possible, and products are just now being rolled out to clients. "They wanted a screener that was easier to access and required fewer people to maintain. That led us to design and engineer the APEX." Weighing only five pounds, each APEX screen measures 30 by 42 inches and is available in sizes ranging from 1/2" inch to 325 mesh. "This is an easy size for one person to handle," says Scheper. "We decided on this size because you can use a standard roll of screening cloth when you replace the screen and there isn't much waste, a real savings for our customers."
