Space Miner is a weird old DOS game lovingly painted with beautiful CGA graphics. The graphical fidelity is truly amazing, and can only be matched by the sound which is created with a square wave by the PC speaker which could produce one sound at a time. In this game you control a space ship and collect ore while blasting aliens to earn money. It's truly magical. #retro #retrogaming #DOS #dosgames #weird #videogames

Programmer: Ian Currie Artists: Robert Koller, Perry Pontano, and Alex Jean-Claude Graphics Toolkits: Genus Microprogramming Company: Sights UnScene Date: 1990 First off, this is NOT the same game as the 1983 Space Miner by Charles Karp. However, they both involve collecting (or mining if you prefer) particles floating around space. This game has a very simple premise: collect X number of rocks to complete the stage. Be warned, this game is VERY difficult. I would go as far as saying the MOST difficult space shooter I have played (and I have played 100's). You only have 3 enemy types. Drones come from the top and shoot at you. Patrols come from the bottom and attack if you grab any ore. Mulchers come straight down from the top and release lots of rocks if you shoot them right in the center. But why is it so hard? The controls! You instantly go sliding in any direction you press, so you need to hover over your arrow keys to keep the ship under control. The screen feels small, and the drones can easily hit you if you blink. The police patrols will destroy you if you stay at the bottom of the screen or collect a rock when they are on screen, and the mulchers will suck you in if you get too close. In fact, the manual even boasts "no one has ever finished level 3". There are three levels in all and the game is tough. If you love space shooters and/or want a big challenge, then you will want to play this game. But don't blame me if you rage quit. ;)

Elite is a free-form space trading and combat simulation, commonly considered the progenitor of this sub-genre. The player initially controls a character referred to as "Commander Jameson", starting at Lave Station with 100 credits and a lightly armed trading ship called Cobra Mark III. Most of the game consists of traveling to various star systems, trading with their inhabitants, gaining money and reputation. Money can also be gained by other means beside trading; these include undertaking military missions, bounty hunting, asteroid mining, and even piracy. As the player character earns money, he becomes able to upgrade his ships with enhancements such as better weapons, shields, increased cargo capacity, an automated docking system, etc. The game utilizes pseudo-3D wire-frame graphics; its world is viewed from a first-person perspective. It has no overarching story, though a race known as Thargoids play the role of antagonists: their ships will often attack the player-controlled ship, forcing the player to engage in space combat. Combat is action-oriented, taking place in the same environment as the exploration. The player must use various weapons the ship is equipped with, as well as manoeuvre the ship, trying to dodge enemy attacks. The player can also choose to attack neutral ships; doing so will decrease the protagonist's reputation, eventually attracting the attention of the galactic police. Elite is notable for its expansive game world, consisting of eight galaxies and 256 planets. The player is free to travel to any of these planets, provided his ship has enough fuel for the trip (the ship's fuel capacity is limited for a journey to the distance of seven light years). Written and developed by David Braben and Ian Bell and originally published by Acornsoft for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers in September 1984. Elite's open-ended game model, and revolutionary 3D graphics led to it being ported to virtually every contemporary home computer system, and earned it a place as a classic and a genre maker in gaming history. The game's title derives from one of the player's goals of raising their combat rating to the exalted heights of "Elite". -- Want to support? Become a Patron! - https://www.patreon.com/thriftweeds

Author: Robert Hans Hansen Jr. Date: June 21, 1990 Here is a space exploration and fighting game like the countless Star Trek simulation games, only this one is a LOT easier to figure out. There are only a handful of commands to send you rocketing throughout the galaxy, exploring new planets and hunting down evil aliens. Your main controls are navigation, shooting your phaser, and a few informational options about ship status. You can refuel at certain areas, dock with star bases, and you'll be given information when you encounter enemies, planets, etc. I haven't found much to do other than shooting alien ships, but from the documentation it seems that there may be more or that this is a precursor to more things to come. Here is the quote: "This is the central program for a game that will have several adventures in it. Including exploring moons, planets, space stations, asteroids, wrecked space craft, ect..." It's pleasant interface and promise of things to come intrigue me. If you like space sim games, then I think it is worth at least taking a look at this one. Who knows, maybe it will inspire you to make your own space sim game!

I've started a website to track the progress of the new versions of this game that will be developed, it's http://cosmicaliens.com Cosmic Aliens is a game I wrote for MS-DOS systems back in 1988, it started as an "I told you I could do it" exercise in one of my college classes and grew into a full featured arcade game with a variety of settings and features, and was distributed through local bulletin board systems BBS in South Florida and made it's way around the country at least. It's a hybrid of Space-Invaders and Galaxians, as the aliens move around a bit but still bomb you. The basic game play is move left and right fire at the aliens, avoid bombs and clear the round. Like Space Invaders, there are UFO ships that will randomly fly across the top of the screen and can be shot for bonus points. Each round or wave add more aliens and faster speeds. And there are a few variations to the game play. On occasion, the normal round of aliens will be replaces by a Kamikaze Attack! and these are 1-2 very fast aliens that are almost impossible to hit, but they are worth 1,000 points each. After clearing a normal wave, there is a chance that you will encounter an asteroid shower before you advance, in this mode, there are falling rocks from the sky that can't be shot or destroyed. You have to shoot down a certain number of alien UFO ships before you run out of time. Every 5th round is the Bonus Round, there are no bad guys to hurt you and you have 30 seconds to try and shoot as many flying UFO ships as possible. What was very unique about this game, was the amount of customization I put into it. Just about every aspect of the game play settings could be changed. How fast your joystick moved, how many points you had to get for an extra life, how many lives you start with, what your laser or shot looks like, how quickly the difficulty would increase, etc. In addition to just changing some of those now somewhat "standard" features, there was also a difficulty editor. There are 10 different difficulties from 0-9. You could select which difficulty you wanted to change, and change the number of aliens that the round would start with, and the speed of the aliens, too, so you could really dumb it down and make them slow if you wanted. It also featured a top 10 high score table, and game over attract modes, and some familiar space music. I'm really glad I found this, and I hope you enjoy the video, I'm going to be re-making this game on a variety of retro and modern platforms, follow the progress at http://cosmicaliens.com You need to run this either on a real PC that's real old and real slow, like an 8088 CPU, or run it on DOS BOX but you need to throttle the CPU speed from like 40000 to about 800 for the speed to be playable, your millage may vary, hit me up if you need help tweaking Dos BOX. This was one of the latest public releases the was shared on bulletin board systems, and I recently found on an internet archive.

Mining and selling resources from planets in Galactic Magnitude

A long time ago, a great empire comprised of Humans, Velox, Thrynn and Elowan ruled the stars. The Empire's currency was an energy source called Endurium. But something happened and this empire is no more. Furthermore, the small colony world named Arth has forgotten this heritage and technology. A thousand years have since passed and the people of Arth have rediscovered archaeological evidence of their empire. Using these discoveries, they create spaceships and form the Interstel corporation to govern the fleet. It's time to take the first steps back into space... but could it be the same enemy that destroyed the Empire still exists? Starflight is a space exploration game with role-playing elements. The game is completely non-linear, allowing the player to venture to any star system and explore any of the vast amount of available planets. The main plot is advanced by following cryptic clues either received as transmissions at the initial spaceport, or obtained as a result of successful communication with various alien races populating the universe. The player must first form a crew, assign their positions and customize the spaceship before blasting off from spacedock. Besides the captain of the ship, a science officer, a navigator, an engineer, a communicator, and a doctor have to be assigned to the ship. The player can choose between Humans, Velox, Thrynn, Elowan, and Android races when creating the characters. Each profession usually has a racial counterpart with the highest proficiency in it. Except Androids, members of every race can be trained in their skills by spending the game's currency. In the starting location the player can also acquire better weapons, armor, and shields for the ship, as well as outfit it with cargo pods. Terrain vehicle can be customized as well. Once out into space, the standard interface allows access to different crew members and navigation. The entire galaxy is unknown and it's up to the player to travel to distant planets to explore and land on them. Planets may be inhospitable, with harsh weather conditions and various terrain types. Using a top-down interface, a planetary lander will venture out with the task of finding minerals and biological data to transport back to Starport. These resources can be sold for MU, the game's currency. Different alien races control the galaxy and it will be up to the player to approach them diplomatically or face them in combat. Depending on the communicator's skill, the player may conduct successful conversations by assuming different postures, requesting information, or answering questions posed by the aliens. Each race has a different attitude and requires different approaches to peacefully end the negotiations. If all else fails, or if the player so wishes, the player-controlled ship may engage the aliens in combat, which is presented as overhead arcade action sequences. Successful exploration of the galaxy and alien cultures will yield clues and new leads as to the fate of the Empire. The Amiga version adds an auto-mining command. The Genesis version has updated graphics and sound, and is different in several aspects: locations of minerals and artifacts are different; there are new weapons for the ship and upgrades for the terrain vehicle; landing on planets is no longer automatic and must be controlled manually to avoid crashing; terrain vehicle exploration is more realistic, with visible weather conditions and various terrain types slowing down the vehicle.

FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/DanielsGameVault ------- DOWNLOAD HERE: http://www.bestoldgames.net/eng/old-games/prehistorik-2.php ------- Check out the game's WEBSITE : http://pre2.mine.nu/ ------- For my Christmas special I thought I might as well do the sequel to Prehistorik. Why do I regard this as special ? Because it's one of the hardest and annoying games I've ever played on a computer: harder than Dragon's Lair, harder than Adventure Island and harder than the first Prehistorik ! You haven't seen anything until you've tried the sequel ! It's a combination of bad controls, cheap difficulty, annoying screen movement and piss-poor password system. Yes, unlike the previous one, it actually has a password system, but it doesn't make things any easier, because there's a pretty good chance you'll die before finding it. Yes, that's right, you don't get the password as soon as you start the level, noooo, not like in other games - you have to find it somewhere in the level. First of all, the path that you take may not necessarily lead to the password, so you might not find it at all and secondly, not all the levels have the passwords in plain sight - some are hidden in the deepest corners of the level, where no one would ever dare to go, so you have the choice of trying to find the password but risk dying in the process, or push on with the level and hope you make it to the end in one piece. But then good luck finding the password for the next one ! Why couldn't the password be right at the beginning of the level ? What game gives you the password only after you've gone through half the level? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING ?! The controls are slightly better than the first Prehistorik, but not by a whole lot. The attacking and jumping are way better: this time you get enough hang time to leap over hazards and the bat stays out long enough to hit enemies. You can also attack diagonally up or down by pressing the arrow keys while attacking, although to swing the bat upwards, you have to press the UP arrow key which is the same key used for jumping, so you could end up jumping right into the enemy you're trying to hit. You have to press UP slightly after you hit the space bar. Now: the number 1 biggest problem I have with this game is the way the camera moves ! Yes, the damn camera is your worst enemy. Unlike other games, like Super Mario, or Jazz JackRabbit, the screen doesn't follow the caveman continuously, so when you approach the side of the screen, the camera freezes for a second and THEN reorients. It's similar to Kid Kool on the NES (watch a video of that to see what I'm talking about). It's hard to explain, but basically the camera pans way too slowly, causing nothing but trouble. It's especially problematic when you're trying to hop across small platforms: because the camera doesn't adjust fast enough, there's no way you can land on a platform that's not on screen because you can't see it until it's too late, which results in some cheap deaths. You're not supposed to wait for the screen to pan! The camera just points wherever the hell it wants - bottom line. Even in the original game the transitions were smooth. Not to mention, the screens had well defined boundaries, so you couldn't stand between two screens like you can here - the camera was either on one screen or on the other, it never had to constantly reorient when the character approached the edge ! With all these factors combined, the game is challenging, but in a cheap way ! It may not seem so bad in the first stages, but once you reach around level 4, GOD DAMN: the frustration comes out full-fuckin'-force ! You only get 3 hitpoints, meaning you can only get hit 3 times. The fourth hit kills you and you lose a life. Once you lose all of them, it's game over, so hopefully you have a password or you're screwed - you're doing it all over again ! There are also a lot of instant death hazards, like spikes, and let me tell you, this game got really carried away with spikes, especially in the last level: there's spikes on the floor, spikes on the walls, spikes on the ceiling, there's spikes EVERYWHERE, you get annihilated ! There's no way you can be expected to make it through in one piece with no cheats ! On top of that, add a truckload of enemies that pop out of nowhere because of the shitty screen movement and you're in for a mind-fuck ! End of story, the game is insane ! For the video I used a trainer that prevent loss of energy or lives, but that still meant it took me all day to get through the last castle ! Can you imagine beating this game with just your regular 1-UPs and your 3 hitpoints ? If you did, then congratulations because you have an amazing level of patience and pain-tolerance ! Not a bad game overall, but the difficulty is crazy ! Daniel out.

The default is 3. You can turn on a forcefield that lasts a little too long, making it easy to win levels if there are too many flees. The object is to kill enough flees to fill up the box on the right, and then the game advances to the next level.
