Autonomous drone flight into a mine stope

05:51
Autonomous flight into an underground mine stope to explore and map it in 3D. The Hovermap payload enables this by providing GPS-denied flight and collision avoidance. In this trial the drone was tasked to fly to a set of pre-defined waypoints. It descended only 5m into the stope but still obtained a dense and relatively complete map. In future the drone will autonomously explore the stope to ensure full coverage without the need for pre-defined waypoints.

Mining Method

02:51
Sub level stoping is a commonly used method in large scale mining. It is a versatile and productive method that is primarily used for large orebodies with a steep dip, regular shape and defined ore boundaries. There are different variations of the method depending on the shape of the orebady. However, the method is based on the principale of blasting of large stopes which are usually backfilled to maximiza recovery of the orebody. Drifts are created through the orebody to enable mining of stopes between sublevels. The orebody can be divided into primary and scondary stopes, where the primary stopes are mined first. The scondary stopes are left as pillars until the adjacent primary stopes have been mined and backilled. Stabilized fill in the primary stopes prevent sidewalls to cave in when secondary stopes are mined. opening raises are required to accommondate the initial blast and start up the stoping process. If rock conditios allow, it is common to drill the entire stope before charging and blasting. Once ore from the first section has been blasted and mucked out, enough room is made to blast larger sections of the stope. One of the advantages with blackfilling, is the possibility to reuse waste for blackfill material, such as teilings-sand from the processing plant. The excavation sequence continues according to plan. Before it is time to excavate the secondary stopes, cable blots are often installed above the stope. This will provide additional support to the rock mass, helping to prevent larger blocks from falling into excavated stope. Productivity is maintained at a high rate since it is possible to mine the ore, on different levels and stopes, at the same time. Sublevel stoping is a productive large scale mining method that enables a multitude of production points in operation at the same time, offering good productivity and low dillution.

Exploring The Yuba River Mines: Part 2

20:11
The road forks at the “Pit of Gold” mine seen in the first video with the fork to the left running uphill and then upriver (we’ll see that section in the next video) and the fork to the right running along the river until it abruptly ends where a bridge was washed out long ago. In this video, we take the fork to the right, but the road is so rough that we are compelled to walk in this section. Along the way, we encounter the remains of vehicles that could not handle the road. However, also along the way, we encounter multiple shafts and adits - evidence of this area’s rich gold and rich mining history. At the end of the road, we cross the Yuba River to visit a mine that George Hearst once held an interest in. George Hearst was the father of William Randolph Hearst (perhaps most famous for his media empire and for Hearst Castle). William Randolph Hearst got his start with money from his father’s very profitable mining investments. So, it is pretty safe to say that this Yuba Mine was a successful one. The miners must have been following a tremendous vein of quartz as you’ll see in the video that the adits are stacked one on top of the other and that they followed the vein all of the way to the surface, creating open stopes. It’s an impressive sight… With these open stopes and all of the adits running in horizontally, I believe that the miners created a series of false floors or trestles inside of the mountain and worked there way up or down until they had taken as much quartz out as they could. The natural limit, of course, being them hitting the open sky… The miners would have brought the ore out on carts and then either sent it down an ore chute or down a tramway to the bottom of the canyon. At the bottom was a 25-stamp mill (one doesn’t build a mill of that size unless they are into something good) as well as a hydroelectric facility to power the mill. The records I saw indicated that the miners pushed more than 600 feet into the mountain. Therefore, we are only seeing a small part of this operation as, unfortunately, so much material has come down those open stopes that it blocks us from continuing for the full length of the adits. When I go into the bottom adit, I encounter a pile of rubble where the open stope starts. In the upper right corner, you can see a tiny opening where the adit continues. The opening is almost completely covered with rocks, but cold air was screaming out of there. So, I know that adit continued back quite a way. Of course, that also means that it is at least partially unobstructed. So, if someone were really motivated… By the way, that gold vein has been there for much longer than the canyon has. So, a large section of that vein was eroded away and washed down into the river (becoming placer gold). The giant pit we saw in the first video is just downstream from this mine and so a fair amount of the gold could have washed down into that pit. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

What is DRIFT MINING? What does DRIFT MINING mean? DRIFT MINING meaning, definition & explanation

What is DRIFT MINING? What does DRIFT MINING mean? DRIFT MINING meaning -DRIFT MINING definition - DRIFT MINING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Drift mining is either the mining of an ore deposit by underground methods, or the working of coal seams accessed by adits driven into the surface outcrop of the coal bed. A drift mine is an underground mine in which the entry or access is above water level and generally on the slope of a hill, driven horizontally into the ore seam. Random House dictionary says the origin of the term "drift mine" is an Americanism, circa 1885–1890. Drift is a more general mining term, meaning a near-horizontal passageway in a mine, following the bed (of coal, for instance) or vein of ore. A drift may or may not intersect the ground surface. A drift follows the vein, as distinguished from a crosscut that intersects it, or a level or gallery, which may do either. All horizontal or subhorizontal development openings made in a mine have the generic name of drift. These are simply tunnels made in the rock, with a size and shape depending on their use—for example, haulage, ventilation, or exploration.

How Lead is Mined & Refined: "A Story Of Lead" 1948 US Bureau of Mines; Lead Metal Mining & Refining

Support this channel: https://www.patreon.com/jeffquitney more at http://scitech.quickfound.net/geology_news_and_links.html "Portrays mining operations in the lead belt of southeast Missouri--the crushing of ore, smelting, refining and other steps in the production of pig lead." Originally a public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Lead has been commonly used for thousands of years because it is widespread, easy to extract and easy to work with. It is highly malleable as well as easy to smelt. Metallic lead beads dating back to 6400 BCE have been found in Çatalhöyük in modern-day Turkey. In the early Bronze Age, lead was used with antimony and arsenic. The largest preindustrial producer of lead was the Roman economy, with an estimated annual output of 80,000 tonnes, which was typically won as a by-product of extensive silver smelting. Roman mining activities occurred in Central Europe, Roman Britain, the Balkans, Greece, Asia Minor and Hispania which alone accounted for 40% of world production. Roman lead pipes often bore the insignia of Roman emperors (see Roman lead pipe inscriptions). Lead plumbing in the Latin West may have been continued beyond the age of Theoderic the Great into the medieval period. Many Roman "pigs" (ingots) of lead figure in Derbyshire lead mining history and in the history of the industry in other English centers. The Romans also used lead in molten form to secure iron pins that held together large limestone blocks in certain monumental buildings. In alchemy, lead was thought to be the oldest metal and was associated with the planet Saturn. Alchemists accordingly used Saturn's symbol (the scythe, ♄) to refer to lead. Up to the 17th century, tin was often not distinguished from lead: lead was called plumbum nigrum (literally, "black lead"), while tin was called plumbum candidum (literally, "bright lead")... Most ores contain less than 10% lead, and ores containing as little as 3% lead can be economically exploited. Ores are crushed and concentrated by froth flotation typically to 70% or more. Sulfide ores are roasted, producing primarily lead oxide and a mixture of sulfates and silicates of lead and other metals contained in the ore. Lead oxide from the roasting process is reduced in a coke-fired blast furnace to the metal. Additional layers separate in the process and float to the top of the metallic lead. These are slag (silicates containing 1.5% lead), matte (sulfides containing 15% lead), and speiss (arsenides of iron and copper). These wastes contain concentrations of copper, zinc, cadmium, and bismuth that can be recovered economically, as can their content of unreduced lead. Metallic lead that results from the roasting and blast furnace processes still contains significant contaminants of arsenic, antimony, bismuth, zinc, copper, silver, and gold. The melt is treated in a reverberatory furnace with air, steam, and sulfur, which oxidizes the contaminants except silver, gold, and bismuth. The oxidized contaminants are removed by drossing, where they float to the top and are skimmed off. Since lead ores contain significant concentrations of silver, the smelted metal also is commonly contaminated with silver. Metallic silver as well as gold is removed and recovered economically by means of the Parkes process. Desilvered lead is freed of bismuth according to the Betterton-Kroll process by treating it with metallic calcium and magnesium, which forms a bismuth dross that can be skimmed off. Very pure lead can be obtained by processing smelted lead electrolytically by means of the Betts process. The process uses anodes of impure lead and cathodes of pure lead in an electrolyte of silica fluoride...
