URBAN MINING! Recovering gold, copper, precious metals from PCB's without chemicals

We are excited to post this video and show you all our progress on processing printed circuit boards (PCB's) for gold, copper and other metals with our hammer mill and shaker table. We have the ability to take whole boards, crush them, and run them on our shaker table. We are still in the experimental stage but we have high hopes to have a complete system ready to sell soon. I should clarify that we can't recover all the gold from the boards, but at the end of the video we do have free metallic gold in the gold pan. Our goal is to take whole boards and concentrate out the valuables (metals) from the non-values (fiberglass, plastic, etc). The free gold can easily be removed, melted, and sold directly to a gold buyer, leaving the concentrates, which are much more valuable that the boards themselves. The remaining gold is plated onto other metals. This cannot be mechanically separated, but using the hammer mill and shaker table it can be concentrated into a salable product. The #2 and #3 hole outputs can be sold to a refiner and let them deal with all the chemicals and refining process. For most people its too complicated, dangerous, expensive, etc. to separate out the different metals in the concentrates. As a side note the free gold per pound recovered from the ~20 pounds of boards equates to 1 troy ounce per ton of boards. This would be considered very high grade gold ore for any miner. The PCB's also have loads of copper, tin, lead, plated gold, etc that is added value on top of that 1 oz/ton free gold recovered. We had a customer send us some very high grade gold quartz ore which we recovered 1.310 troy ounces from only 300 lbs! We ran the quartz through our 1/2-1 ton per hour complete turnkey processor comprised of out jaw crusher, hammer mill, and shaker table modules. The system did a good job of crushing and pulverizing the ore, but the shaker table did a remarkable job of recovering lots of gold that was smaller than 325 mesh. This is our second video in our five part series of our trip to Kenya to install a shaker table to help eliminate the use of mercury by the smalls scale gold miners. We met with Julius who is the president of the MICA gold mining cooperative and donated a shaker table to MICA to show the miners a different technology for gold concentration other than the use of mercury. Once the shaker table was set up the miners were amazed! The shaker table on average recovered 2-3 times more gold from the same material they had been processing with their blanket/burlap sluices and mercury use. The table can also process the material up to 10 times faster than the blanket/burlap sluices. The result being in some cases 30 times more gold for the miners in the same amount of processing time. Despite government attempts to regulate mining, illegal pits are still commonplace. They lack even the most basic health and safety and workers are exposed to toxic mercury fumes. Dirty water causes skin diseases and they live with the constant threat of being buried alive. Workers continue to take these risks day after day, because there is no other source of income. Many of the gold miners are children whose families can’t afford to send them to school. Some gold is panned on the surface, but a lot has to be extracted from underground. To do that, prospectors dive into narrow, mud-filled shafts, uses snorkelling masks and long tubes too breathe. If the mine collapses, they have no chance of escape. They have a saying here, ‘while you’re down the mine, you have one foot in the grave’. Several miners have already died that way, others from respiratory diseases caused by inhaling mercury fumes. The toxic metal is used in gold extraction with no safety precautions, so it poisons the air, the ground and the water, causing long-term harm to the whole community. Another danger to the inhabitants of Paracale comes from disused mines, abandoned and left open, waiting for unsuspecting victims to fall in. The business takes its toll on workers, their families and the community. They have been known to demonstrate, demanding safer working conditions, better pay and other job opportunities, but change is slow. Meanwhile, extreme poverty among people who produce one of the world’s most precious metals leaves them no option but to continue with this pitiless occupation. Five multi element assays done on Mineralized Outcrops With Prescious Metals with good results for gold, silver, platinum and palladium. All Elemental results listed at the end of the video. Samples were tested via ICP analysis, with a fire assay for gold done as well. Several mineralized rock outcrops with decent grade gold, silver, platinum and palladium showings. The veins are stringers with pyrite and chalcopyrite as the main sulphides hosting multiple minerals. Mineralization can also be found as disseminations in the host rock. We are sampling and exploring various new outcrops over the next few months in the hopes of finding new areas to complete more in depth mineral exploration programs. The area has mass amounts of mineralization and is in a silitified and pyritized fracture zone 11km long and several kilometers wide in BC, Canada, this zone carries multiple gold, gemstone, mineral and VMS deposits. There are hundreds of heavily mineralized outcrops and multiple large and smaller deposits. Some mined over a hundred years ago, some are new discoveries. The town of Marmato, in Central Colombia, sits on top a mountain of gold. Its people have been living off of it for centuries, mining the precious metal through mostly small scale, artisanal operations. But as the country is increasingly relying on its mineral resources to fuel the economy, multinational mining companies have set their sights on places like Marmato to install open air mines that would literally swallow the landscape. According to some estimates, it would take about 20 years to extract all the gold from the mountain, wiping out the town and its 10,000 inhabitants in the process. The imminence of this news weighs heavily on the people of Marmato, who are organizing to fight back and prevent this from happening. Whether talking about gold, pork bellies, silver, palladium, platinum, or any commodity (from coffee to cotton), there are a few very important considerations. In general, the prices of the penny stock mining companies will increase or decrease by a larger percentage amount than the actual metal itself. This is because of the profit margin increase. If gold (for example) rises 10%, then since the extraction costs are set, the boost to profit margins could be extreme... such as 200%. Thus, the 10% surge in the price of the metal actually translates into a significant gain to the penny stock's profits. However, one issue that all businesses have, which the commodities do not face, would be company-specific risks. Commodities do not embezzle money, or make bad business deals, or get sued, or have to deal with employee deaths, etc... Additionally, dump leaching is an essential part of most copper mining operations and along with other deterministic factors, determines the quality grade of the produced material. Our waste is worth money. Recovering it has started up a new global industry worth billions. It is called Urban Mining and it appears to be the solution for many of our environmental problems and our energy needs. And it is hot. A ton of broken mobile phones, computers or other electronic waste contains sixty times the amount of gold a ton of gold ore has. Moreover, it is easier to get at. It is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of total world demand for rare metals can be covered by urban mining and this is only the beginning. Urban Mining has a different, almost hilarious consequence: for years we have dumped our electronic waste in developing countries, with our eyes closed. There, it was to be recycled. But in Africa only one quarter of the gold, platinum and coltan is recovered whereas the newest technology in Belgium recovers almost 99 percent. So somewhere there’s a profit to be made. This is the third and final installment of our smelting and gold refining series. In this last video we smelt the dried anode slimes and recover a button of precious metals. *** Gold recovery clarification. I wanted to mention the copper button with the ~8 grams of gold from the first video in this series was not used in part 2 and 3. I sent the first copper button to a refiner as a test piece to see if it was something they could refine and to find out what percent they would pay on the gold recovered. This is why there is not at least 8 grams of gold recovered in this final video. The material I smelted to recover the ~2 grams of gold in part 2 and 3 was from some other sulfides from a different source. Thanks to CoinSilver800 for pointing this out.**** ***I wanted to post this response here in the description too as it brings up some good points about this process and why I am using this method to recover the gold. This is in response to a comment by Greg Burnside, thanks for the comment Greg!: Thanks for the comment and question. I guess I should clarify a few things about this process and this is the perfect post to do it. My goal is to find an scale-able process for direct smelting hardrock gold ore concentrates from gravity separation (off our shaker table specifically, but could work with any concentrate) without any roasting or pre-treatment and end up with a salable product. By this process the roasting step can be eliminated which is very environmentally hazardous, is expensive to do in larger batches, and takes a lot of expensive equipment. Secondly, by direct smelting the handling is greatly reduced, ie take your shaker table cons, mix them with some flux and collector metal and smelt, pour your product. Now I should also mention here that the copper button I ended up with in the very first video is a perfectly salable product. AAA precious metals in Portland, OR paid me 80% of the gold value in that copper button (for nuggets, placer, etc. gold they pay 95% of the assayed value on batches under 100 oz for comparison). The second two videos (electroplating and slimes smelting) were mostly just an experiment to see if they would work and to try and end up with a gold product. Didn't quite work out like I planned, but I think with some more experimenting it could be done. Even if it does work its not easily scale-able, takes a long time, produces some by-product (sulfuric acid with heavy metal ions that needs to be disposed of) and only increases the value by 15%. Each operator will have to decide if the cost of further refining from a copper button is worth it, for me personally I think sell copper with 1-10% gold content for 80% value and be happy. I think in your original post you were hinting at the a wet chemical separation of the gold/values from the concentrates, correct me if I am wrong. So to answer the root of your question: gold concentrates are very tricky for wet chemistry methods. Unlike with electronics, gold plated jewelry, etc. in hardrock cons the gold values are not always available to the leach because they are encapsulated by the sulfide crystals. The free/liberated gold in the concentrates can easily be leached, but I have seen concentrates with only a 10% recovery rate by leaching due to this encapsulation problem. Some ores will be easily leached due to their high percentage of free gold, others will need to be treated in other ways. The fire assay is the universal way ores are tested for gold values. By melting everything to a liquid and collecting the precious metals in a button a very very high percentage of the precious metals can be recovered in the assay process and that is why it is still used today on all types of ores and by all companies. I am trying to essentially re-create the assay process on a large scale so no matter what type of ore concentrate you have (free gold, sulfide matrix, or a combo of both) you can recover a high percentage of the gold with minimal cost and have a easily salable, non toxic, product with minimal work and equipment. I plan to do another smelting video in the near future with a measured amount of gold and then assay the slag, matte, and copper button so we can see exactly where the precious metals ended up and what percent recovery can be accomplished by this method.
