This is a summarized version of a several hour hike through the beautiful Karangahake Gorge area in New Zealand. During the hike, we see a waterfall, walk in a tunnel through a mountain, visit a nearby cafe, and follow paths through the cliffs and into the mines. I highly recommend this area for its scenic beauty, even on a rainy day! Grey River Gold Dredge, at 170 meters long and 30 meters high, the 3500-tonne gold dredge on the banks of the Grey River on the West Coast, New Zealand. This dredge is one of the few bucket-line gold dredges in the world today and is the last of its kind on the West Coast. The dredge was originally constructed by Kaniere Gold Dredging Company Ltd and worked in the Hokitika area between 1938 to 1953. In 1957, the dredge was relocated to Taramakau River where it worked until 1978. It was dismantled in the early 1980’s and the salvageable machinery was used in the construction of the Grey River Gold Dredge. When running with a staff of 15, with two eight-hour shifts a day, seven days a week, its 104 in-line buckets digging up 60,000 cubic metres or 120,000 tonnes of rock and gravel a week from the bottom of the 20-metre-deep pond on which it floats. When it had been running round-the-clock it was producing 5000oz to 7000oz a year. The dredge is of all-steel construction, is powered by two megawatts of electricity and moved around its 300-metre-wide pond by five computer-controlled positioning winches operated through DC electric motors. Each of the buckets has a capacity of 0.57 cubic metres or about a tonne of gravel, filling at the rate of 25 buckets a minute. The bucket-line is powered by two 1000hp DC motors, and it washes 850 cubic metres or 1700 tonnes of gravel an hour through a 3.6-metre-diameter screening trommel lined with polyurethane. Any material bigger than 12mm is rejected as coarse tailings that are carried by a conveyor belt to a tailings stack behind the dredge, while the rest is washed through two circular jigs mounted on either side of the screening trommel. The gold-bearing concentrate then passes into a hopper from where it is pumped to secondary and tertiary jigs, and finally to the concentrate bin. The dredge and its pond advance at the rate of about three metres a day, and ultimately the tailings are bedded down under quality dairying pasturage. The dredge floats on a pontoon 80 metre long and 36 metre wide that was part of the original machine built by the Kaniere Gold Dredging Company on Lake Kaniere in Westland in 1938, and between then and 1953 recovered 175,000oz of gold from the Hokitika area. In 1957 it was relocated to the Taramakau River, from which it recovered 202,000oz until being laid up in 1978.

On a beautiful summers day we left Auckland via the Hunua's for a ride around Waihi district. The ride started out with a purposeful ride through the Karangahake - Waikino gorge stopping to take in the sites in Waihi township with gold mining relics and the open cast gold mine itself. Continuing on from there we arrived at Bowentown domain with views over Anzac Bay and across the inlet to pine forested Matakana island. Then a leisurely ride up the coast to a sparsely populated Whiritoa Beach. The return home is a great ride through Whangamata, Kopu-Hikuai, Miranda and Hunua. A wonderful day. QUEENSTOWN The Kawarau River gorge with its steep hills and rapidly flowing river is exceptionally scenic and we made many stops to take photographs. We stopped at a tourist site outlining the gold mining history on this river. Gold was discovered on the Shotover River in 1862, and it became the second richest gold-bearing river in the world. Makeshift towns of tents, stores, bars and grog shops sprang up almost overnight, establishing not only Queenstown, but also Arrowtown, 21 kilometres to the north east beside the Arrow River, and many other small encampments

Karangaheke gorge is located at the base of the Coromandel Pensinsula, about a 1.5 hour drive from Auckland. There are plenty of great walks in the area, but from my point of view the Windows walk is the very best. From here you get framed views into the mining sites and the sparkling river below. There are even some glowworms, so keep an eye out for them. You can observe the relics of the many processes that took place in extracting gold - from the tunnels where rock was extracted, to the roasting pits where the rock was broken down, and the huge stamper battery processing plant. The Talisman battery, built in the 1890s was huge in its day, with 50 stampers crushing rock. Another popular option is the historic walkway. It follows the historic Paeroa to Waihi railway. In the stunning natural gorge setting many old mine buildings and machinery can be seen. Where the gorge opens up you will find the huge Victoria Battery. It was erected in 1897 to crush quartz and was considered the largest and most advanced facility of its type in New Zealand. To continue the loop you will get a chance to walk through the 1 km long tunnel that was once used for mining processes. Upon finishing this walk you will pass the Crown Battery site, which was constructed in 1892 and accommodates 60 stampers for crushing quartz There are many more walking and mountain biking tracks, but if you are short in time these are my recommendations. Best place to stay when you visit Auckland: https://goo.gl/8G7BgW Stay tuned in for more great day trips from Auckland and subscribe to my channel! https://goo.gl/Lp2q7A

Arrowtown is an old gold-mining town just outside of Queenstown. It resembles a snapshot in time of what a town of that era would have looked like. When JRR Tolkien created Middle Earth little did he know the magical landscapes of his imagination actually existed, 12,000 miles away from his home in Oxford England. It took Peter Jackson 10 years and millions of dollars to bring the Rings to life on the big screen. Golden Fox tours have been taking people there every day for the past 10 years. Many of the areas that Golden fox tours visits provide the spectacular backdrops to much of the action in Peter Jackson¹s film The Fellowship. Golden Fox Tours takes you on a special adventure tailored to include some of the locations used for significant scenes in the film, Prepare to be amazed. Golden Fox Walking Tours takes you in to the embodiment of the Middle Earth of Tolkien¹s imagination. Golden Fox Tours is a scenic charter that gives a spectacular look at the diversity of the scenery in the area. It is based around several of the specific sites where filming took place. These are real places ; there are no film sets ; they are areas of outstanding natural beauty that need no enhancement. Here it is possible to experience the magical atmosphere We talk about the History of Arrowtown and how it sprung up over night when Gold was discovered back in 1862, You get to look at some real Gold Nuggets. And have a look at some Rings, similar to those used in (The Rings) Then we move out of the town to the Chinese settlement. Where we have a chat about the history of the Chinese miners. We then walk to where the Black Riders and there horse did there gallop though the River scene. At this point we have a chat about the movie and the discovery of Gold. we continue walking through native bush for about ten minutes till we get to a clearing, this is the place where William Fox found all that Gold back in 1862. ), It is here where we go Gold panning for some Elf Gold. Everyone finds Elf Gold flakes in the famous Arrow River to take home with them. General tour will take two and a half hours round trip. gold mining gold fossicking Slab Hut Creek reserve is a small DOC campsite where you are legally allowed to pan for gold in the river that runs past. It is in a really quiet location, set in a forest environment, and features a large brick barbeque with pizza oven on the side. It also has the distinction of being one of the very few locations where you can legally pan for gold, and keep what you find. Elsewhere in New Zealand, if you don't have a prospecting license, you can't legally keep any gold that you might find, even it it is on your own land.

In the Parakiwai Valley of Coromandel Forest Park, gold prospecting is closing conservation land and destroying the habitat of Archey's frogs. Local guide Clive Duxfield showed Forest & Bird Regional Manager Rebecca Stirnemann through the valley, and discovered fresh damage from prospecting sites. The area is known habitat for the citically endangered Archey's frog, and even with the best efforts at mitigation, there is going to be an impact on them. These frogs are more precious than any gold. The Government should be protecting the remaining places where they live, not allowing gold mining to destroy this specially protected conservation land. Learn more about these frogs and their valley in the Spring issue of Forest & Bird magazine, in letterboxes this week. Join Forest & Bird to get your copy: http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/joinus
