Pyrite or Chalcopyrite?  Chemical Analysis Rock and Mineral Identification
I found a piece of quartz with what looked to be either pyrite or chalcopyrite. One knowledgeable person told me it was pyrite and another told me it was chalcopyrite. I performed a wet chemical analysis to see if copper was present since chalcopyrite has copper and pyrite doesn't. I found the real answer in the lab.

Many people who may have difficulty to identify the gold in the rock, because gold is usually often confused with the kind of carrier minerals pyrite , chalcopyrite, pyrhotite, pentlandit and gold-colored mica, because the mineral carrier is very similar to a vein of gold ore. consequence of the existence of native gold movements in the earth's heat or thermal. Where the size of microcrystalline gold ore minerals are below 150 microns to 0.8 microns and fatherly look of metal ore we need a tool microscope. Microcrystalline gold deposits are generally found in the primary. Gold grains are disseminated in a gangue of quartz and intergrown or locked in sulfide minerals. Coarse grains can be liberated by crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration using a concentrator. If the ore consists of very fine grains extraction with a mixture of sodium cyanide to extract metal ore fatherly. Submicro crystalline gold particles and typically occur in the crystal lattice of certain sulfide ores. Gold contained in sulfide minerals present as small grains and particles in the crystal lattice of minerals. Many primary deposit consists of grains and disseminated in pyrite, chalcopyite, arsenopyrite or pyrrhotite containing large amounts of gold and intergrown with gangue minerals. Sulfide minerals can not be concentrated by gravity methods because the gravity is very low for gold sulfide. Froth flotation is the most common technique used to process the content of ore minerals in these rocks, followed by using sodium cyanide to remove gold. Prospecting For Gold & Silver - New High Grade Ore Vein Found!
Sampling an area with extensive outcrop containing viens of solid mineral containing gold, silver, platinum, lead and zinc. We have sampled several other smaller viens in the area but this is the most promising and returning the best values. The ore is found amoungst a schistose host rock with numerous quartz veins and dissemintions in the host rock of pyrite and chalcopyrite. The quartz veins are virtually barren other than the occasional speck or pocket of pyrite. The solid mineral viens mainly consist of a pyritic ore with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite and some galena. Complete gold recovery processing line for gold ore
We had a customer send us some very high grade gold quartz ore which we recovered 1.310 troy ounces from only 300 lbs! We ran the quartz through our 1/2-1 ton per hour complete turnkey processor comprised of out jaw crusher, hammer mill, and shaker table modules. The system did a good job of crushing and pulverizing the ore, but the shaker table did a remarkable job of recovering lots of gold that was smaller than 325 mesh. What Is Gangue? Geology Lesson (Episode #2)
What is Gangue? A mining term everyone should know! Here's a quick lesson explaining the differences between overburden, tailings and gangue. This mine was struck over 130 years ago into a shichtose metavolcanic rock the deposit hosted multiple gold, silver & copper quartz veins which contained semi massive and massive minerals consisting of mainly chalcopyrite, some sphalerite, galena snd a few others. A lot of the mineral was left behind as there were very poor techniques for refining 130 years ago causing a lot of the side veins to be lower grade. This was stored in mine dumps, some ore was proscessed onsite. The mine dump, waste rock and tailings are now partially mixed. We were hired to perform some sampling of one adit and three mine dumps for an older fellow who holds the claim. Out of courtesy we can show little of the surrounding area. This is used in several processing industries. Historically this was first used in the mining industry The following steps are followed: 1.Grinding to liberate the mineral particles 2.Reagent conditioning to achieve hydrophobic surface charges on the desired particles 3.Collection and upward transport by bubbles in an intimate contact with air or nitrogen 4.Formation of a stable froth on the surface of the flotation cell 5.Separation of the mineral laden froth from the bath (flotation cell) Simple flotation circuit for mineral concentration. Numbered triangles show direction of stream flow, Various flotation reagents are added to a mixture of ore and water (called pulp) in a conditioning tank. The flow rate and tank size are designed to give the minerals enough time to be activated. The conditioner pulp [1] is fed to a bank of rougher cells which remove most of the desired minerals as a concentrate. The rougher pulp [2] passes to a bank of scavenger cells where additional reagents may be added. The scavenger cell froth [3] is usually returned to the rougher cells for additional treatment, but in some cases may be sent to special cleaner cells. The scavenger pulp is usually barren enough to be discarded as tails. More complex flotation circuits have several sets of cleaner and re-cleaner cells, and intermediate re-grinding of pulp or concentrate. froth flotation cell. Numbered triangles show direction of stream flow. A mixture of ore and water called pulp [1] enters the cell from a conditioner, and flows to the bottom of the cell. Air [2] or nitrogen is passed down a vertical impeller where shearing forces break the air stream into small bubbles. How to Make Bismuth Crystals
Bismuth ingots can be purchased here (this is an affiliate link): http://ebay.to/1iwwqji Bismuth is non-toxic and has a number of very interesting properties. For best results I recommend using at least 4 or 5 pounds of bismuth for the surface crystallization method demonstrated in the video. The deeper the pool of bismuth is in the pan the better, because the crystals will have extra room to grow before they touch the bottom. The more you use the more impressive your results will be. Some of you that are familiar with other forms of crystal formation may be thinking I gave bad advice when I state in the video that you can move the crystals as they grow. Usual crystal growth requires a very still solution with no movement, and a very slow cool down period. I did quite a lot of experimenting with this method and found that bismuth does not behave quite the same way. Once the crystals have begun forming it does not seem to matter if they are moved so long as they remain submerged. Further structured growth happens regardless of disturbance once there is a point to nucleate from. You may also notice that I was not wearing gloves for a portion of the video, that was foolish of me. I was wearing eye protection the entire time. Leather gloves (not synthetic!) and lab goggles should always be worn in case of splashes or spills. Prospecting A Newly Logged Area & Some Old Gold Mines
We have recently staked this area to evaluate the mineral potential. Recent logging has exposed loads of new bedrock. Several locations were found with minerlization including a new quarry used to build access roads. Part of the property has several old mines including an old prospectors pit, 6 meter deep shaft, an incline shaft 33 meters deep and a big quarry were we have recently been removing material for a bulk sample (shown in another video). The video shows some quick exploration of the area to get a view of how much bedrock is exposed from logging. And shows some of the workings. Buca Della Vena Mine – Part 2: Discovered Underground Mine Train!
Sure, we’ve come across ore carts and trammers before while exploring at abandoned mines. However, finding an intact underground mine train parked with the ore carts still hooked up to the trammer (what miners call the electric locomotive) is something that I have never seen before or since. I’ll give away some of the secrets of the upcoming videos by saying that there is a second part to this train just a short distance farther down the track. I wonder if the operator of the trammer/locomotive felt a twinge of sadness when it was parked underground for the last time? I mentioned in the description and comments of the last video that I would talk more about the history and geology of the abandoned mine in this description. The below is a translation from Italian to English and the translation is not perfect. However, it conveys the relevant information. So, quoting directly, here you go.. “The Buca della Vena Mine (formerly Stazzema Mine) was part of the 15th-16th century Vene Ferralis, although it is believed that works were held there already during the Medicean period. Work restarted between 1850 and 1860, and in 1938 the Pignone of Florence company began excavating. Since 1957, the SIMA company (subsidiary of EDEM) continued to work regularly in the tunnel searching mixed mineral barite-pyrite until 1990. The field is described as a mineral body almost unique with barite, pyrite and iron oxides of good quality. It is oriented NNE/SSW, in the contact zone between shale Unit Fornovolasco, white dolomite and grezzoni. Considerable scientific interest was aroused by the discovery of rare or unique in the world mineralogical species. Minerals mainly extracted are: - barite used for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum industry and as nuclear power plants insulation - pyrite for chemicals and iron and steel - iron oxides for steel products” Although the mine being explored in this video apparently dates back to the Medicean period, I passed ancient workings while pushing up the canyon walls that date back to the Romans and even the Etruscans. In other words, the iron ore deposits here have not exactly been a secret for thousands of years. The section of the Buca della Vena Mine featured in this video hosted very dark rock and huge open chambers. So, even with multiple lights, it was a struggle to fully illuminate it. Cure for cabin fever. Gold prospecting in the winter. Dayna and I went out to look at a new Hardrock gold claim I just picked up, right on the side of a highway so access was easy even in the winter. We checked out where the "Minfile" (old prospecting reports) said to look and grabs some quartz samples. But after some closer inspections of all the old prospecting files we found a good map that showed us we were digging on the wrong side of the highway. But at least we got out and had some fun and got a good look at the mineral claim. Mining Tellurium (Te) and selenium (Se) for solar panels - University of Leicester
www.le.ac.uk https://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/geology/research/vtmrg/tease A shift from fossil fuels to low-CO2 technologies will lead to greater consumption of certain essential raw materials. Tellurium (Te) and selenium (Se) are 'E-tech' elements essential in photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. They are rare and mined only in small quantities; their location within the Earth is poorly known; recovering them is technically and economically challenging; and their recovery and recycling has significant environmental impacts. Yet demand is expected to surge and PV film production will consume most Se mined and outstrip Te supply by 2020. Presently, these elements are available only as by-products of Cu and Ni refining and their recovery from these ores is decreasing, leading to a supply risk that could hamper the roll-out of PV. Meeting future demand requires new approaches, including a change from by-production to targeted processing of Se and Te-rich ores. Our research aims to tackle the security of supply by understanding the processes that govern how and where these elements are concentrated in the Earth's crust; and by enabling their recovery with minimal environmental and economic cost. This will involve 20 industrial partners from explorers, producers, processors, end-users and academia, contributing over £0.5M. Focussed objectives across 6 environments will target key knowledge gaps: The magmatic environment: Develop methods for accurately measuring Se and Te in minerals and rocks - they typically occur in very low concentrations and research is hampered by the lack of reliable data. Experimentally determine how Te and Se distribute between sulfide liquids and magmas - needed to predict where they occur - and ground-truth these data using well-understood magmatic systems. Assess the recognised, but poorly understood, role of "alkaline" magmas in hydrothermal Te mineralisation. The hydrothermal environment: Measure preferences of Te and Se for different minerals to predict mineral hosts and design ore process strategies. Model water-rock reaction in "alkaline" magma-related hydrothermal systems to test whether the known association is controlled by water chemistry. The critical zone environment: Determine the chemical forms and distributions of Te and Se in the weathering environment to understand solubility, mobility and bioavailability. This in turn controls the geochemical halo for exploration and provides a natural analogue for microbiological extraction. The sedimentary environment: Identify the geological and microbiological controls on the occurrence, mobility and concentration of Se and Te in coal - a possible major repository of Se. Identify the geological and microbiological mechanisms of Se and Te concentration in oxidised and reduced sediments - and evaluate these mechanisms as potential industrial separation processes. Microbiological processing: Identify efficient Se- and Te-precipitating micro-organisms and optimise conditions for recovery from solution. Assess the potential to bio-recover Se and Te from ores and leachates and design a bioreactor. Ionic liquid processing: Assess the ability of ionic solvents to dissolve Se and Te ore minerals as a recovery method. Optimise ionic liquid processing and give a pilot-plant demonstration. This is the first holistic study of the Te and Se cycle through the Earth's crust, integrated with groundbreaking oreprocessing research. Our results will be used by industry to: efficiently explore for new Te and Se deposits; adapt processing techniques to recover Te and Se from existing deposits; use new low-energy, low-environmental impact recovery technologies. Our results will be used by national agencies to improve estimates of future Te and Se supplies to end-users, who will benefit from increased confidence in security of supply, and to international government for planning future energy strategies. The public will benefit through unhindered development of sustainable environmental technologies to support a low-CO2 society. Revisit of Cligga Tin Mine with much improved lighting, filmed on my GoPro3, 3 hour trip condensed into 30 minutes no software enhancement required. Bob and myself both have extensive knowledge of mines and mining techniques through working in the industry, old workings are extremely dangerous and must only be entered with a full understanding of how they work, many transfer chutes, winzes, shafts and open stopes make it a hazardous environment. History of Cligga Mine. Cligga Wolfram & Tin Mine lies on the cliff tops about one and a quarter miles southwest of Perranporth on the North Cornish coast. The granite pegmatite cliffs have been altered to greisen and exhibit jointing and veining. The veins often filled with cassiterite (tin oxide), wolframite, mispickel (arsenical pyrite) and the copper/iron suphides, chalcopyrite and bornite. Silver ore has also been reported here. There is one shaft on the sett called Contact Shaft and two adits, one at beach level called Beach Adit, the other atop the cliffs and unsurprisingly called Cliff Adit. The mine worked in the early part of the twentieth century although 'Old Men's Workings' from the past are quite visible as you approach the area. Mining restarted in 1938 after a period of closure prior to the mine being taken over by the 'Rhodesian Mines Trust Limited in 1939'. Trials were carried out around this time to see if it was more feasible to work the stockwork as an open cast pit rather than an underground mine, but this came to nothing. There is surprisingly little information on Cligga although there are production records showing that between 1940 and 1944, 300 tons of wolfram and 200 tons of black tin were raised and sold. 1945 Cligga Mine closed. The War was nearly over and shipments of American tungsten were now arriving regularly in England. The high cost of producing a small quantity of tungsten from Cligga could no longer by justified and therefore, production at Cligga was halted. In 1962 the 'Geevor Mining Company took out a lease on the mine and in collaboration with the Sungesi Besi, Tronoh and Panang Companies started a programme of shaft rehabilitation and deepening with a view to re-opening the mine. Contact shaft was deepened to 550 feet from surface, drives 'on lode' were started both seawards and inland. However water was hit at about 250 feet from the shaft and work there abandoned. The seaward drive continued for some 800 feet before further exploration by diamond drilling commenced. The results were inconclusive, and by early 1964 Geevor had decided to unwater 'Levant' mine instead of re-opening Cligga. 1976 there was renewed interest in mining for tin on a small scale at Cligga, and Wheal Concord undertook a limited programme of evaluation. Wheal Concord Ltd planned to re-open contact shaft in 1984-1985, but the collapse of the tin-market in October 1985 put a stop to this. Cornish tin mines are dangerous only people with knowledge of working mines should enter but then only with extreme caution. To the contents a suitable oil like pine oil or olive oil is added. A frothing agent like sodium ethyl xanthate is mixed. Then froth is formed and carries the ore particles with it. The gangue settles down at the bottom of the tank. The froth, if allowed to settle, leaves behind the concentrated ore. The bubbles of the froth formed are stabilized by adding "collectors". The hydrocarbon chains in them possess oily nature and so prevent the ore particles from going into the aqueous layer. The gangue is wetted by water and so remains in the aqueous layer. Follow-up video to the Ore Sample project.
This is part two of me designing a project for my students. In this video I play with the crushing of the ore samples and testing for gold. Also modified the slabbing part of the project a bit to shorten the time needed for all the cuts. In this part of the project students will use a manual crusher to make the sample smaller, then use the Cobra Crusher to powder the sample. Then the students will pan out the powder to see if there is any gold.
