Guitar: The Springhill Disaster (Including lyrics and chords).
Having been introduced to some new songs recently by Tony Oppegard, the old grey matter got to working on remembering a song I heard in the 60s about a mining disaster. Eventually I recalled its name and found the lyrics for it. Written by Peggy Seeger who was married to Ewan MacColl the lyrics I have used are those purported to be MacColl's but I suspect that whoever transcribed them could not hear correctly the name of the miner in the sixth verse. I should have checked out other sites before accepting this but did not. therefore I sing 'Kaehler Brushen' which I now realise should have been ;Caleb Rushton'! (One of the pitfalls of the free internet and transcribing by ear!!) There had been a number of mining disasters in the mines of Springhill in the Cumberland County of Nova Scotia, but this song was probably inspired by one in 1958 after which, the mines at Springhill were closed for good.

U. Utah Phillips - Miner's Lullaby
Utah Phillips discusses his song, "Miner's Lullaby," followed by bluegrass duo Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin performing his song. Miners would take a tin of morphine with them down in the shaft, in case of a cave in, or other disaster to ease the pain as they died. The lyrics of "Miner's Lullaby" are: MINER'S LULLABY (Bruce 'Utah' Phillips) Once, long ago, he was handsome and tall And fit to be called to the war We left our village, family and all To never return any more Now he takes his coat, his bucket and lamp And whistles away to the cage Where men young and old from all over the camp Gather in search of a wage Chorus: Husband, sleep, lay your head back and dream A slow fallen leaf borne down to the stream Then carried away on the wings of morphine Homeward far over the sea My husband and I are Roman in faith And we have a secret to keep If ever his life is taken away Then gentle and long will he sleep Now some men pass with family around And linens and blankets so clean But seldom a miner goes underground Without his tin of morphine Chorus And now here's a word, an explosion is heard The miners are trapped far below If any survived down there alive I'm certain we never will know Although our families have vainly appealed No rescue attempt can be seen Our hope for loved ones in the dark earth sealed Now lies in a tin of morphine Chorus Words and music by Bruce 'Utah' Phillips. Fall of Tragedy - Songs of Innocence
Fall of Tragedy (A 7-part video series) Video and Photography Stills by Billy Soh 2008 (May) This piece of artwork is a monologue between the actor and the character she has taken up as a role. The script is a video work with the actor dressing up and behaving in a certain conduct to express thoughts about marriage, love, death, rebirth and confusion. The photograph documents the process of the performance while in shooting. This shifting of actor to character requires the juxtaposition of identities and personalities, slowly blurring the definition of the artist as actor and that of the character. This puts a concept of un-clarity firmly in context. Theatre as an art form draws an interesting reference to the portrayal of drama as a whole. It is a form of musical opera where singers are engaged to sing and act out the tragedies of life; in sorrow, in sadness, in joy etc, as seen in many historical works by famous playwrights. Theatre is highly regarded as a high Art form as it manages to capture the essence of emotions in the work and by re-enacting emotional feeling that the audience can relate to. My interest in Tragedies came as a personal experience to living my own life and experiencing changes in my surroundings. I am also extremely chaotic in nature and am used to liking works that arouse such similar attitudes. Sculptor and Performance Artist John Bock is an artist that I look at. His work takes on the form of sculpture, performance, installations hat are both narrative and playful. The video challenges the form and space of traditional theatre when I use it in place of a theatre studio; video technology as opposed to a group performance. These are 7 different videos outling 7 different tragedies that uses neither words nor speech to describe an emotion but by illustrating using only simple gestures and props to narrate a story. Songs of Innocence: Songs of Innocence traces one woman's struggle to negotiate between her simple outlook of innocence and that of growing up and accepting differences and difficulties. Her joy/idea of innocence is portrayed from the start of the video which grows into the process of growing older and accepting her realities.

U2 - Bono "The First Time" acoustic demo
Bono previews an unfinished version of The First Time, perhaps for a journalist. The quality is sub-par, but it was probably recorded on a hand held recorder. Bono gives commentary on the song as he struggles to play, sing and make up the words at the same time. Does anyone know the source of this recording? I used to have it on a tape labeled "Spanish Zoo Radio" but have no other info. Thanks to whackjester on interference.com for the mp3.

This is a demo of U2 performing their song Jack In A Box. The audio was recorded when the band members were teenagers. The song was played on an Irish radio special about the band a few years later and taperecorded off of the radio, so the sound quality is not great. I used a mashup of early video footage and do not claim copyright ownership on any of this material. It is presented for its historical importance.

Over the Hills and far away - a recruiting song for the Red coats
A song and tune put to many uses during the years since it was first noted in 1620. This version is a recruiting song from the time of Queen Anne and Marlborough's victories on the Continent. The last couple of lines from Eadwyn Torr. OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY Hark now the drums beat up again For all true soldier gentlemen So let us list and march I say And go over the hills and far away Cho: Over the hills, and o'er the main, To Flanders, Portugal and Spain Queen Anne commands and we'll obey, And go over the hills and far away There's twenty shillings on the drum For him that with us freely comes 'Tis volunteers shall win the day Over the hills and far away Come gentlemen that have a mind To serve a queen that's good and kind Come list and enter in to pay And go over the hills and far away And we shall live more happy lives Free of squalling brats and wives Who nag and vex us every day So it's over the hills and far away Prentice Tom may well refuse To wipe his angry master's shoes For now he's free to run and play Over the hills and far away Take courage, boys, 'tis one to ten, But we return all gentlemen All gentlemen as well as they, Over the hills and far away. No more from sound of drum retreat When Marlborough and Galway beat The French and Spaniards every day Over the hills and far away. Over the sea and o'er the land, to Iraq and Afghanistan The queen commands and they'll obey, over the hills and far away (Eadwyn Torr for last phrases)

Ewan MacColl - We are the engineers
Ewan MacColl & Peggy Seeger We Are The Engineers 1971 AUEW1 En soutien au syndicat "Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers" Paroles : "Two Joined Hands" was our device when our banner first unfurled, Hands that knew the feel of tools and helped to build a world. Two hands became a million hands and fashioned down the years The machines that make the world go round, The ships and planes and the diesel trains, The weaving frames and the building cranes, We are the engineers! We tamed the fire and harnessed metals, learned a thousand skills; Our hands have made the tools men use in factories, mines and mills. Ours the hands that throw the switch that puts the world in gear, That make the plows that turn the soil, The ships and planes and the diesel trains, The weaving frames and the building cranes, We are the engineers! Those who came before us walked a dark and lonely road: Hunger, hurt and poverty, they bore a heavy load. Police and spies at every turn, a world of doubt and fear... But they fought the cruel laws and when The lost the rose to fight again, For the right to work and live like men, They were the engineers! Tracked and hunted throught the years, these men of stalwart hand, Starved and beaten, still they took a brave dtermined stand. Jails and transportation hilks face union pioneers- But they fought the cruel laws and when The lost the rose to fight again, For the right to work and live like men, They were the engineers! We've stamped our feet in the morning queues, known unemployment's toll, Known hands go soft in idleness, the slow death on the dole. The rusty lathe and the silent factory mark the hungry years; And the grass growing green on the shipyard floor, And the endless beat of marching feet And men demanding the right to eat And work as engineers! Our skills were used to fight a war, September '39, To rid the world of fascism our workers did combine. Men and women side by side worked through the angry years, And we built the tools of victory, The bombs and guns and the armoured trains, The tanks and ships and the fighting planes, We are the engineers! Two joined hands in unity have built this world of ours; And they have built our union, too, a tool of workers' power: A mighty, multipurpose tool that cuts and bores and shears; Combining skills of those who build The ships and planes and the diesel trains, The weaving frames and the building cranes, We are the engineers! And we, the youngest engineers, we march to claim our rights; We have learned that nothing's ever won without fight. Every battle fought and won reveals a new frontier, And a world to be won by those who build The ships and planes and the diesel trains, The weaving frames and the building cranes, We are the engineers!

"Aberfan (7 pianos, percussion, voice and tools of rescue)" , excerpt
http://laurasiersema.com First Hymn - Rock Sequence, demo excerpt of voice and piano parts from my new, modern composition "Aberfan (7 pianos, percussion, voice and tools of rescue)" which uses excerpts from a folk song my mother wrote in 1966 at the time of the tragic landslide in Wales. Seeking funding to record. To help make sure this project is completed, please donate at: http://www.tinyurl.com/FundAberfan "Aberfan" is a sponsored project of New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt organization. Contributions on behalf of "Aberfan" must be made payable to NYFA, and are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. http://tinyurl.com/Aberfan At approximately 9:15am on October 21, 1966, in the small Welsh mining village of Aberfan, a man-made mountain of coal waste catastrophically collapsed. One thousand tons of black slag came down towards the village, demolishing first a farm, then eighteen houses and Pantglas Junior School. 116 children and 28 adults were killed. Remembering the Aberfan Disaster My mother wrote a folk song, "In a Town Called Aberfan," in the wake of the tragedy, that I used to hear when I was a child. I have been compelled for years to work on an adaptation of my own. Using excerpts of melody and lyric from my mother's song, as well as portions of hymns sung earlier that morning and at the funeral one week later, Aberfan is now a full modern piece incorporating movements of Rain, Sunrise, Rubble, Rock, Hymns, Interludes, Trauma, Silence and a Field, and their alterations. “All Things Bright and Beautiful” was sung that day at morning assembly. The catastrophic collapse occurred about 9:15am. Photo courtesy AGU Blogosphere http://blogs.agu.org/landslideblog/20... -uploaded in HD at http://www.TunesToTube.com

The Grocer by Ewan McColl - Margaret Thatcher "tribute"
The Grocer (Ewan MacColl) [tune "The Garden Where the Praties Grow"] Come all you argumentative sods who like to chew the rag, Who stand at the bar hour after hour on a beery talking jag; Sit down and rest your feet awhile and give your mouths a rest, And I'll tell you about the dame they call the "Guardian of the West." Her hair was the best that money could buy, her eyes were china blue; I swear they wouldn't look out of place on a frozen cockatoo. She'd a nose like the blade of a metal saw, a voice like a tungsten drill, She used it to bore the natives when she'd a couple of hours to kill. When she was a puking babe in arms, she read in a magazine About the royals and decided then she'd like to be the Queen; But the job had already been taken, so she stamped her foot and said, "If I can't be the Queen or the Prince of Wales, I'll he the PM instead." And so she moved from NW4 to a pad in Downing Street, A well-found joint where she and a hunch of deadbeats used to meet; And they'd all dance round the table, then have a cosy chat; And in between she'd practice her elocution on the cat. The lady often said she'd like to have lived in the Golden Age, Before the days of the unions and the National Minimum Wage; And she sighed when she thought how Hitler had smashed them all to hell; "What he could do I can do better," she said, "and probably twice as well." And so she set out on the job of castrating them one by one, All except the E.T.U. and that had already been done; Teachers and civil servants and workers down the mine Needed a taste of the lady's whip to make them toe the line. The miners they came out on strike and she went for them tooth and claw, Nurses and firemen struck as well, she belted them with the law; They may be gallant heroes when they're saving people's lives, But they're just a bunch of layabouts when they're asking for a rise. Well, the lady's reputation plummeted down into the red, But trouble blew up in the Falklands, it was jam on her gingerbread; "Thank God for a nice little war," she said, "this is Britain's finest hour!" So a couple of hundred swaddies died so she could stay in power. The day a Polish shipyard became a casualty She rushed to see Lech Walesa, crying "Solidarity!" "O stay with us, my love!" he said, but she answered with a frown: "I've got to rush hack to Glasgow, dear, to close a shipyard down." She doted on brave Colonel North and all that he represents; And she stuck like shit to a blanket to her favourite president; And she's madly keen on Bushy-tail of the dear old C.I.A., And she carries a torch for Botha and General Pinochet. Once behind the counter in her father's grocer shop, She sold butter and jam and flour and Spam and everything else, the lot; But now the merchandise has changed, old prices don't apply; She's selling the nation off in lots to all who want to buy. Pebby Seeger's Notes: Ewan had an odd attitude towards grocers. It might have been due to his own poverty- stricken childhood when his family was continually in debt to the local grocer; or perhaps it was the rumour that the present royal family can be traced back to a grocer who made his fortune by victualling Napoleon armies...no matter. Margaret Thatcher's father was a grocer and Ewan wasn't about to let her forget it.

Pauline Barich Interview 1977 You Tube
Interview of my grandmother, Pauline Barich, done in 1977 for a high school project. Vance Barich and Pauline Barich immigrated to the U.S. as young 18 and 20 year olds. "On the day Pauline Barich, a Croatian, boarded a ship to travel from Europe to America, her mother sent her off with a basket of food to sustain her. It didn’t last. Somewhere along that oceanic crossing a gypsy convinced the pretty 18-year-old, traveling alone in steerage, to trade her food in exchange for learning her fortune. Who knows what he told her? That she would be hungry in a strange land? Or that on the train to Washington state, where her sister and brother-in-law were forging a life in the mining town of Roslyn, a kindly black porter would share his food with her — and protect her with good advice? The year was 1914" "Pauline went on to Roslyn, helped her sister’s family, met her husband Vance Barich, also Croatian, and married him two years later after he’d reimbursed her brother-in-law and sister for her travel expenses. She and Vance had 15 children, one of whom died as an infant in 1937. The third floor of the family’s home served as barracks for the boys. The family ate in shifts — and took pride in their role as Americans. Seven of the Barich siblings were serving in World War II in May 1945, when the family was featured in a parade in Seattle during the seventh war bond drive. " From the 2001 First Barich Cousins Reunion.....Family dynasty that today numbers 162 direct descendants which includes 14 children, 55 grandchildren, 76 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren. We are remember Grandma and Grandpa and their joy and laughter. This is one of their greatest legacies, the love of family. Bog! (God go with you)

It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama is the 30th largest by area and the 24th-most populous of the U.S. states. With a total of 1,500 miles (2,400 km) of inland waterways, Alabama has among the most of any state.Alabama is nicknamed the Yellowhammer State, after the state bird. Alabama is also known as the "Heart of Dixie" and the "Cotton State". The state tree is the longleaf pine, and the state flower is the camellia. Alabama's capital is Montgomery. The largest city by population is Birmingham, which has long been the most industrialized city; the largest city by land area is Huntsville. The oldest city is Mobile, founded by French colonists in 1702 as the capital of French Louisiana. From the American Civil War until World War II, Alabama, like many states in the southern U.S., suffered economic hardship, in part because of its continued dependence on agriculture. Similar to other former slave states, Alabamian legislators employed Jim Crow laws to disenfranchise and otherwise discriminate against African Americans from the end of the Reconstruction Era up until at least the 1970s. Despite the growth of major industries and urban centers, white rural interests dominated the state legislature from 1901 to the 1960s. During this time, urban interests and African Americans were markedly under-represented. Following World War II, Alabama grew as the state's economy changed from one primarily based on agriculture to one with diversified interests. The state's economy in the 21st century is based on management, automotive, finance, manufacturing, aerospace, mineral extraction, healthcare, education, retail, and technology.
