MINING JOBS TV Episode 3: Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs Brought to you by www.miningresumes.com - Kick-start your mining career today and email us at [email protected] or call Mining Resumes on 1300 737 863 Welcome to Episode 3 of Mining Jobs TV. Hi my name is Matt and I will be speaking to you today about unskilled and entry level jobs in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. You may have probably heard the stories about a friend of a friend who is earning over $100,000 a year on a mine somewhere in Western Australia or Queensland and wondered how you could get a mining job too. Entry level or unskilled jobs, like trade assistants or plant operators are hard to get now as every man and his dog are applying for them. The best way to get these jobs would be to move out to the little mining towns and live there and register with all the labour hire companies, there are hundreds of them. Trades people like fitters, welders, boilermakers and electricians still have a fairly good chance of picking up work on mining sites. If you don't have a trade, doing a rigging or scaffolding course would give you a good chance at getting a job, the courses are only about 4 weeks long, but they are fairly expensive. Other unskilled or basic jobs available include cleaners, laundry workers and kitchen hands which is not difficult if you have hospitality training and experience. Talking to people who are currently working on mining sites can be a big help, especially if you have no previous experience or qualifications. It would be even better if you could get in contact with expats from your own country who are working on mining sites. They can let you know who to call and what you need to do. If you are inexperienced and unqualified you need to be fit and ready for physical labour. The work will be very repetitive and routine based with long 12 hour days, so you really need to be mentally prepared, as well as physically. Some mines will have a very high turnover of workers. This is because many people go to work on the mines not knowing what to expect. Because there can be such a high turnover, you may not start earning big money straight away, although your wages won't be small either. Once you've proved yourself to be a reliable worker, your wages should increase. Most mining companies will run police checks, as well as drug and alcohol tests. Even though there are wet mess areas on-site where workers can unwind and drink alcohol, they do have to drink in moderation and be fit-for-work before their shift starts Shutdowns are exactly what the name suggests. Every now and then mining sites need to shut down for upgrades, maintenance or repairs and they usually hire people temporarily to work during shut downs. A lot of the work is unskilled and doesn't last very long, so it's great for backpackers who want to keep on travelling and don't want to make a full-time commitment. It's also a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable on-site experience. To do certain mining jobs you will need to get licences and training, or 'tickets' as they are more commonly known. There are lots of different types of tickets depending on what type of work you're going to do. Some tickets can be very expensive and mines in different states require different tickets, so you really need to do your research before you start spending money on courses. Don't think that just because you're female that the mining companies and recruiters won't consider you. The mining industry in Australia is becoming increasingly gender neutral. It's not just cooking and cleaning jobs either on offer for women either; more and more women are working on Australian mining sites, and in some cases, companies even prefer women for certain jobs. For example, a popular job for women on mining sites is driving a dump truck because research has shown that women are easier on the multi-million dollar equipment yet still get the job done. It's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. They can be contacted via phone on 1300 RESUME or have a look at their website miningresumes.com with package details and samples browse that demonstrate their quality and experience. US Mining Companies Show New Interest in Rare Earths

03:58
I'm Mario Ritter with the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Today we continue our report on the group of chemical elements known as rare earth metals. These are mined from the earth and used to make technology from mobile phones to missiles. The United States once led the world in rare earths. Today China controls almost all production. Premier Wen Jiabao says China will not use these metals as a diplomatic weapon. But Japan says exports meant for that country have remained at Chinese ports as a result of a recent dispute. The United States stopped mining rare earths in two thousand two. Companies blamed environmental rules and low-priced imports from China. But now exploration is moving forward again. Edward Cowle is president and chief executive of a company called U.S. Rare Earths. He and his partners gained rights to some land in the American West about fifteen years ago. They had been interested in thorium -- a radioactive element that can fuel nuclear reactors but not be processed into weapons. Mr. Cowle later found that the land also held a lot of rare earth metals -- lately a subject of intense interest. The company has not started mining yet. It still has to get permits and work with other businesses to put operations in place. Ed Cowle says a lot of work remains. He says the earliest that they could open the mine would be in six to seven years. Another American company is Molycorp. Jim Sims, the public affairs director, says Molycorp has already begun producing three thousand tons of rare earths a year. That makes the United States the world's second largest producer, a distant second. Mr. Sims says Molycorp is the western hemisphere's only producer of rare earth products. The company says the largest reserves of rare earths outside of China are in its mine in Mountain Pass, California, and in the Mount Weld area of Australia. Jim Sims says Molycorp spends only about ten percent on mining. The big cost is in chemically separating the rare earths from the minerals that carry them. He says Molycorp raised about three hundred eighty million dollars when it sold stock to the public for the first time in July. The company aims to increase production to twenty thousand tons by two thousand twelve. It says that would more than meet current levels of demand in the United States. For VOA Special English, I'm Mario Ritter. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 15Oct2010)

PDAC 2012 Special Achievement Award

05:11
Special Achievement Award From time to time, the PDAC presents a Special Achievement Award that recognizes exceptional contributions to the mineral industry. This year, the association has chosen to honour the Mine Training Society (MTS) for providing Aboriginal people in northern Canada with the opportunity to develop usable job skills for the mining industry and for developing a pool of skilled workers for the industry. MTS is a non-profit organization comprising Aboriginal, industry, and government partners. Its objectives are to: i) screen, select, train, and place northerners in all areas of mining; and ii) in cooperation with the NWT's education system and communities, build a legacy of education and awareness about the employee and skill requirements of the mining industry. MTS works with mining companies and industry service providers to bring training and jobs together, funding up to 50% of eligible costs for training programs. Priority for funding is given to training proposals that are skills based and lead directly to employment. The MTS is a pioneer in this area and serves as a model for the other training societies across the North. Since 2004, the MTS and its partners have trained 854 individuals out of a total 1,095 applications, and 600 people have been employed in the mine and mine services sector. Courses offered include: general trades training; environmental monitoring; first aid first responder; driller helper; underground mining (heavy equipment operator, etc.); and mineral process operation.

Copper mines in Zambia - Straight through Africa

43:29
Trade is better than aid for Africa. They say. In a journey through copper thieves and mine barons in the north of Zambia, Bram Vermeulen investigates the truth behind that slogan. From a distance they look like ants, the hundreds of men digging holes in the rubble slopes of an old copper mine in Zambia. They are looking for copper ore in the walls of the enormous pit, without wearing helmets and without reinforcing the walls of their caves. Life-threatening, of course. But they find enough to live on. Is it legal, Bram asks. They laugh about it. No of course not. But the Chinese buyer does not really ask where they get their ore from. You just have to leave when the guards of the mine come. How different is it in a huge copper mine in full operation. Huge machines drive off and on. Sirens sound regularly, followed by explosions. Here, 300,000 tons of stone are moved every day, and the copper ore from it yields a profit of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. But it is a foreign company that raises that money. And if the productivity gets too low after about twenty years, the investors will move on. From the air it is easy to see how far-reaching it all is. The mine takes big chores out of the country and turns huge plains into a kind of lunar landscape. But other changes are also visible. Houses, schools, a golf course. Prosperity, therefore, emphasizes a mine boss. Seven years ago this was still a dull provincial town, and now look! A little further on the big changes are about to begin. There is a giant copper mine here, and for that an area of no less than four hundred square kilometers is expropriated. The new owners promise economic prosperity. Did not a city like Johannesburg also start out as a simple mine? Naturally, people living in the area can not stay. They have worked the land for generations, but they can not show ownership documents. They have not been asked anything. They do get compensation for their houses, chickens and fruit trees, but not for the ground. "Everything under the ground is state property," says a representative of the mining company, "and that is what the state can rent out to us." Residents who do not want to leave are squatters who violate the law from that moment on. Even though they were born and lived there all their lives. Those former residents are moved to neat new houses outside the area. With toilet, and bigger than the previous house, but without land to grow food. Some of them seem satisfied with that. Most do not. 'In Africa, land has sentimental value. You are no one without land, 'says one of them. "So you're destroying these people. They will not pass on anything to the next generation. " Episode 6. Copper fever  For Africa, trade is better than aid, or so they say. On a journey to copper thieves and mine bosses, Bram Vermeulen investigates the truth behind the slogan. Let's Blast!

05:00
NOTE: Although this video shows an up-close look at the blasting process, NEVER go near an active surface mine or blast site without Federal training and permission. FYI, the white bags are Emulsified Ammonium Nitrate. The read cap is TNT and the silver rod that is connected to it by the yellow wire is the blasting cap, it's what ignites the shot. The white pebbles that are emptied into the blast holes by the powder trucks are the main explosive- "ANFO" or Ammonium Nitrate, which is a mixture of fertilizer and diesel fuel. Once the holes are filled with explosives, rock fines or "stemming" is pushed back in the holes and packed down to keep the explosives under pressure. After all the holes are loaded and rigged up, it's time for the fireworks! And remember kids, don't try this at home! Want to see more Blasting?
