Mining the Crowd - Tova Milo - Technion Computer Engineering lecture
Mining the Crowd Lecture by Prof. Tova Milo, Head of the Computer Science Department, Tel Aviv University Harnessing a crowd of Web users for data collection has recently become a wide-spread phenomenon. A key challenge is that the human knowledge forms an open world and it is thus difficult to know what kind of information we should be looking for. Classic databases have addressed this problem by data mining techniques that identify interesting data patterns. These techniques, however, are not suitable for the crowd. This is mainly due to properties of the human memory, such as the tendency to remember simple trends and summaries rather than exact details. Following these observations, we develop here a novel model for crowd mining. We will consider in the talk the logical, algorithmic, and methodological foundations needed for such a mining process, as well as the applications that can benefit from the knowledge mined from crowd.

Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence: Crash Course Computer Science #34
So we've talked a lot in this series about how computers fetch and display data, but how do they make decisions on this data? From spam filters and self-driving cars, to cutting edge medical diagnosis and real-time language translation, there has been an increasing need for our computers to learn from data and apply that knowledge to make predictions and decisions. This is the heart of machine learning which sits inside the more ambitious goal of artificial intelligence. We may be a long way from self-aware computers that think just like us, but with advancements in deep learning and artificial neural networks our computers are becoming more powerful than ever. 11 Facts About Area 51
Area 51: one of the most secretive places on the planet. From conspiracy theories to UFO sightings, here are 11 secrets about Nevada's mysterious military base. Subscribe for new videos: http://goo.gl/SaufF4 Voiceover by Rodney Tompkins: https://www.youtube.com/c/BigBadada2012 11: It’s a U.S. Air Force Facility Area 51 is a part of a US Air Force facility in Nevada that serves as a center for research, development, and testing aircrafts. The origin of Area 51's name is unclear, but it is commonly thought to come from the grid reference given by the Atomic Energy Commission. The air force base itself is only 6 by 10 miles, but it is encompassed by a restricted air space nearly 25 miles squared centered on the Groom Lake salt flat. 10: It’s Part of a Larger Nuclear Test Site Area 51 is part of the Nevada Test Site used extensively from 1951 to 1992 for nuclear tests. The region surrounding the Indian Springs was recognized as a potential site for testing. 9: The U.S. Government Denied its Existence Until quite recently, Area 51 did not even officially exist. For decades Area 51 received no official recognition until the site was finally declassified in 1997, but the projects undertaken there remained a secret. It took a Freedom of Information Act request years to finally get some real information. The CIA officially recognized Area 51's existence in 2013, and released 355 documents that confirmed 8: Exemption from Environmental Regulations A group of civilian contractors had once tried to sue the Environmental protection Agency in 1994 over the high levels of dioxin, dibenzofuran, and trichloroethylene found in their bodies after inhaling toxic chemicals burned at Area 51. They suffered skin and liver damage, and some even stopped living from the toxic exposure. But in 1995, President Bill Clinton signed an order exempting the entire area from certain environmental regulations. A similar act 7: Paradise Ranch Area 51 was once given the nickname "Paradise Ranch" in order to entice employees. Located in the middle of a barren scorching desert, it would only be normal for some government officials to not want to be employed in Area 51. The area is full of dust and sand, and miles away from any town or city, and employees were required to actually live there. So in order to entice these people, the management jokingly nicknamed the place "Paradise Ranch" 6: Extreme Secrecy Area 51 is known for the extreme measures it takes in maintaining the secrecy of all operations held in its facilities. Confidentiality is pressed upon everyone, and all employees are required to swear an oath of secrecy. It is said that the buildings located within the complex are mostly windowless so that each group has zero idea about the specifics of what others are doing. Contractors and military personnel are ferried to and from the facility by a fleet of passenger aircrafts operating from a private terminal at McCarran Airtport. 5: Alien Conspiracy Theories The enormous secrecy surrounding Area 51 has led to a large number of conspiracy theories about the activities going on behind the gates of the military base. The most common accusation is that the US government is harboring aliens and alien technology there. The area has been identified by assorted conspiracy theorists as a place where researchers study captured UFOs and alien life forms. This includes the "alien craft" that supposedly crashed in Roswell in 1947. That year, the Army Air Field at Roswell 4: Alleged Former Employees have “Confirmed” the Alien Theories In 1989, a man named Bob Lazar added fuel to the Area 51 alien stories when he claimed to be a physicist who used to work in the secret facility, having witnessed at least 9 alien spacecrafts that the military were trying to reverse engineer. In a 1996 documentary film titled Dreamland, a 71 year old former mechanical engineer claims to 1: Spy Planes and Stealth Bombers Of all the Area 51 facts, the most interesting is that the origins of Area 51's association with alien life forms might actually stem from decidedly terrestrial roots. In the 50s and 60s, with relations with the Soviet Union worsening, Groom Lake was made the test site for CIA's Project Aquatone, and later the OXCART program. These were high altitude reconnaissance plane development programs that eventually lead to the production

YouTube for Opinion Mining Research at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies
University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies computer scientist Louis-Philippe Morency is analyzing online videos to capture the nuances of how people communicate opinions through words and actions. For Morency, who is also research assistant professor at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, online videos are the latest tool in the growing field of opinion mining. In his current research -- figuring out how to identify when someone is sharing a positive, negative or neutral opinion - YouTube provides a limitless library of likes and loathes. Morency and his colleagues created a proof-of-concept data set of about 50 YouTube videos that feature people expressing their opinions. The videos were input into a computer program Morency developed that zeroes in on aspects of the speaker's language, speech patterns and facial expressions to determine the type of opinion being shared. Morency's small sample has already identified several advantages to analyzing gestures and speech patterns over looking at writing alone. First, people don't always use obvious polarizing words like love and hate each time they express an opinion. So software programmed to search for these "obvious" occurrences can miss many other valuable posts. Also, Morency found that people smile and look at the camera more when sharing a positive view. Their voices become higher pitched when they have a positive or negative opinion, and they start to use a lot more pauses when they are neutral. "These early findings are promising but we still have a long way to go," said Morency. "What they tell us is that what you say, how you say it, and the gestures you make while speaking all play a role in pinpointing the correct sentiment." Morency first demonstrated his YouTube model at the International Conference on Multimodal Interaction in Spain last fall. He has since expanded the data set to include close to 500 videos and will submit results from this larger sample for publication later this year. The YouTube opinion data set is also available to other researchers by contacting Morency's Multimodal Communication and Machine Learning lab at ICT. Potential commercial uses could include for marketing or survey purposes. In the academic community, Morency foresees his research and database being resources for scientists working to understand human non-verbal and verbal communication, helping to identify conditions like autism or depression or to build more engaging educational systems. Inspiring the next generation of female engineers | Debbie Sterling | TEDxPSU
Close your eyes and picture and engineer. You probably weren't envisioning Debbie Sterling. Debbie Sterling is an engineer and founder of GoldieBlox, a toy company out to inspire the next generation of female engineers. She has made it her mission in life to tackle the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and math. GoldieBlox is a book series+construction set that engages kids to build through the story of Goldie, the girl inventor who solves problems by building simple machines. Debbie writes and illustrates Goldie's stories, taking inspiration from her grandmother, one of the first female cartoonists and creator of ""Mr. Magoo."" Her company, launched in 2012, raised over $285,000 in 30 days through Kickstarter, and has been featured in numerous publications such as The Atlantic and Forbes. Prior to founding GoldieBlox, Debbie served as the Marketing Director of Lori Bonn, a national jewelry company. For the past 7 years, she has also served as a brand strategy consultant for a wide variety of organizations including Microsoft, T-Mobile, Organic Valley and the New York Knicks. Debbie's inspiration to create a mission-driven company came in 2008, when she spent 6 months volunteering at a grassroots nonprofit in rural India. She created a viral fundraising campaign called ""I Want a Goat,"" raising over $30,000 for economic and educational development in the region. This experience helped pave the way to finding her true passion: inspiring the next generation of female engineers. Debbie completed her degree in engineering at Stanford (Product Design, '05) and currently lives with her husband in San Francisco. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

the History of Mechanical Engineering. The application of mechanical engineering can be seen in the archives of various ancient and medieval societies. In ancient Greece, the works of Archimedes (287–212 BC) influenced mechanics in the Western tradition and Heron of Alexandria (c. 10–70 AD) created the first steam engine (Aeolipile). In China, Zhang Heng (78–139 AD) improved a water clock and invented a seismometer, and Ma Jun (200–265 AD) invented a chariot with differential gears. The medieval Chinese horologist and engineer Su Song (1020–1101 AD) incorporated an escapement mechanism into his astronomical clock tower two centuries before escapement devices were found in medieval European clocks. He also invented the world's first known endless power-transmitting chain drive. During the Islamic Golden Age (7th to 15th century), Muslim inventors made remarkable contributions in the field of mechanical technology. Al-Jazari, who was one of them, wrote his famous Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices in 1206 and presented many mechanical designs. He is also considered to be the inventor of such mechanical devices which now form the very basic of mechanisms, such as the crankshaft and camshaft. During the 17th century, important breakthroughs in the foundations of mechanical engineering occurred in England. Sir Isaac Newton formulated Newton's Laws of Motion and developed Calculus, the mathematical basis of physics. Newton was reluctant to publish his works for years, but he was finally persuaded to do so by his colleagues, such as Sir Edmond Halley, much to the benefit of all mankind. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz is also credited with creating Calculus during this time period. During the early 19th century industrial revolution, machine tools were developed in England, Germany, and Scotland. This allowed mechanical engineering to develop as a separate field within engineering. They brought with them manufacturing machines and the engines to power them. The first British professional society of mechanical engineers was formed in 1847 Institution of Mechanical Engineers, thirty years after the civil engineers formed the first such professional society Institution of Civil Engineers. On the European continent, Johann von Zimmermann (1820–1901) founded the first factory for grinding machines in Chemnitz, Germany in 1848. In the United States, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) was formed in 1880, becoming the third such professional engineering society, after the American Society of Civil Engineers (1852) and the American Institute of Mining Engineers (1871). The first schools in the United States to offer an engineering education were the United States Military Academy in 1817, an institution now known as Norwich University in 1819, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1825. Education in mechanical engineering has historically been based on a strong foundation in mathematics and science. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Internet Hardware in the Loop
Michigan Engineering is pioneering an Internet system that enables researchers to interconnect and test physical and virtual prototypes, in real time, no matter where in the world those prototypes might be. The challenge is to ensure a high-fidelity simulation despite the presence of Internet delays. This system could make it possible for researchers to test a entire multi-component system (like a car) no matter where in the world those components might be. This improves current system prototyping technology that's limited to bench-testing interconnected components, or testing a system in which components are interconnected locally. About the Professor: Tulga Ersal (https://me-web2.engin.umich.edu/pub/directory/bio?uniqname=tersal) is an assistant research scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (http://me.engin.umich.edu) at the University of Michigan College of Engineering (http://www.engin.umich.edu). His work delves into system dynamics and control, mathematical modeling, model reduction, multi-body dynamics, networked hardware-in-the-loop simulation, and biomechanics. The application areas of this work include vehicle dynamics, vehicle powertrains, energy systems, driver modeling, and human stance and balance.

Green Mining: Relating Software Metrics to Power Consumption
Presented at Queens University. Green Mining is a mixture of software power consumption research and mining software repositories research. Essentially green mining is about the effect of software change and software evolution on software power consumption. The goals of green mining are to investigate and learn from software evolution from a power consumption perspective. Mobile devices and servers face limits on the amount of electrical power they may draw upon. These limits comes from batteries or the capacity of racks and enclosures. Furthermore more hardware tasks are being moved into software that the software engineer, and even application-level software developers are having a greater impact on the power consumption of a computer system than ever before. Applications affect power usage because they interact with a wide variety of peripherals such as screens, radios, wifi, and speakers. Previous work has focused more on the systems level de- velopers, we want to instead focus on application developers and help them reduce the power consumption of their applications. Thus we want to document the types of changes that impact power consumption. We want to be able to estimate the power consumption induced by new changes to a system. Finally we want to leverage mining software mining repositories research to help us understand how maintenance and evo- lution of software systems affect software power consumption. Reduced software power consumption leads to reduced carbon emitted that could affect the global climate, ar- guably this is the kind of software engineering that can help the world! http://greenmining.softwareprocess.es/

IACS Seminar: Geometric Deep Learning on Graphs and Manifolds: Going Beyond Euclidean Data 1/26/18
Presented by Michael Bronstein, Associate Professor at Università della Svizzera italiana (Switzerland) and Tel Aviv University (Israel); Radcliffe Fellow Talk Description: In the past decade, deep learning methods have achieved unprecedented performance on a broad range of problems in various fields from computer vision to speech recognition. So far research has mainly focused on developing deep learning methods for Euclidean-structured data. However, many important applications have to deal with non-Euclidean structured data, such as graphs and manifolds. Such data are becoming increasingly important in computer graphics and 3D vision, sensor networks, drug design, biomedicine, high energy physics, recommendation systems, and web applications. The adoption of deep learning in these fields has been lagging behind until recently, primarily since the non-Euclidean nature of objects dealt with makes the very definition of basic operations used in deep networks rather elusive. In this talk, Dr. Bronstein will introduce the emerging field of geometric deep learning on graphs and manifolds, overview existing solutions and applications, and outline the key difficulties and future research directions. The IACS seminar series is a forum for thought leaders from academia, industry, and government to share their research on innovative computational and data science topics and methodologies. IACS seminars are generally held every other Friday during the academic year, and are free and open to the public https://iacs.seas.harvard.edu/iacs-seminars.

Citeology: Visualizing Paper Genealogy (Autodesk Research)
Citeology looks at the relationships between research publications through their use of citations. The names of each of the 3,502 papers published at the ACM CHI and ACM UIST Human Computer Interaction (HCI) conferences between 1982 and 2010 are listed by year and sorted with the most cited papers in the middle. In total, 11,699 citations were made from one article to another within this collection. These citations are represented by the curved lines in the graphic, linking each paper to those that it referenced (in blue), and in turn, to each paper that referenced it (in red). By extending this process in each direction we can see further generations of ancestor and descendant papers which the target paper built from or inspired. Try Citeology on the Autodesk Research website: http://www.autodeskresearch.com/projects/citeology Or take a look at our Citeology alt.chi 2012 paper: http://autodeskresearch.com/publications/citeology2 (Music is from the "Tumbler" track from Kyle Gabler's World of Goo Soundtrack)

Created as a sandwich of alternating copper and insulating substrate layers, PCBs can reveal clues about system functionality based on layout heuristics or how components are interconnected. By accessing each individual copper layer of a PCB, one can reconstruct a complete circuit layout or create a schematic diagram of the design. In this presentation, Joe examines a variety of inexpensive, home-based solutions and state-of-the-art technologies that can facilitate PCB reverse engineering through solder mask removal, delayering, and non-destructive imaging. The work is based on Joe's Research and Analysis of PCB Deconstruction Techniques project performed as part of DARPA's Cyber Fast Track program. Joe Grand is an electrical engineer and hardware hacker. He runs Grand Idea Studio (www.grandideastudio.com) and specializes in the design of consumer and hobbyist embedded systems. He created the electronic badges for DEFCON 14 through 18 and was a co-host of Discovery Channel's Prototype This. Back in the day, he was a member of the infamous hacker group L0pht Heavy Industries. Twitter: @joegrand Web: http://www.grandideastudio.com
