How to be an exotic car broker

Ed (@edbolian) has made a lot of exotic car deals. He hates the ways brokers insert themselves into deals without adding value but today he offers pointers on how supercar deals should be done. Wow! If I was the person purchasing the car, I would have told the seller, “I’m sorry, but if you aren’t going to be a stand up guy and stay true to your word, I am no longer interested in the car.” Talk about lack of integrity on the sellers part.

My first job out of college was at a Mercedes Dealership in Seattle in the early to mid 90's. I was hired because I have a knack for ignoring money, and fame. I did meet a lot of people like you, however, and my impression is that you are a real douche. I learned there was three kinds of customer. Old money, New money, ( Like an NBA player or Football), and the kind of guy who makes pyramid-scheme videos. There is no need to deal with anyone but the old money, and the new. You are the unwanted.

Has anyone who watches this channel ever driven anything nicer than a M, Amg or a Porsche? I haven't. Edit: I got to drive an 80s Ferrari too, but it wasn't a special model worth maybe 30-40 grand
Kevin Hibbard (1 month ago)
So the impression I get it from all these videos. all supercars break, all the time, no matter what. So you better have a lots of cash.
bsheehan (1 month ago)
Wow, that's a crazy story, pretty low of the seller to renegotiate after the deal had been struck. Obviously buy low sell high is the mantra of business be it the stock market or cars, new and or used. I have a complex question and maybe some here can give some guidance, how do you determine which car to buy? I'd like to buy a Porsche. I look at old Porsches and I can see them going for 100k or more and I look at relatively new ones (a few years old) going for about the same. How do you evaluate the depreciation hit on a new car vs a used car not know exactly how it was driven in the entry exotic market (aka normal not limited or track series Porsches)? This from a guy who has only owned complete beaters or modest new vehicles.

This is the worst part about sales...it's one of the few jobs where people think it's 100% ok to screw someone over. "Oh...they just made a phone call" Well you own a phone jackass...why didn't you make it?
daxadam (2 months ago)
Hiding behind the wife, what a gutless move... Ed should've called the buyer and have him drop the offer 10k, no point having the buyer overpay if he ain't getting the entitled commission.
Taekwondo Time (2 months ago)
Trying to sell anything is the most frustrating experience anyone will ever experience in their life. 1% of buyers show up as advertised and pay the agreed upon amount 99% of buyers either don't show up, don't have the money, or try to continually renegotiate and talk you down on price

Ben Schneider (2 months ago)
You were upset with $10k for setting up a transaction?
kingkckc (2 months ago)
over all seems to be a decent guy, but hiding sales details is shady. transparency in market is needed for people to make informed decisions, hiding them so someone can make profit later is just shady business not a fan of that BS and why "invest" vehicles is a nonsensical thing. its just a bunch of rich guys scamming each other
kingkckc (2 months ago)
not advocating he needed to state the details in the video but just the fact he mentioned it was for profitability purposes later is why i bring it up

Why ANYONE would take a 5 mph bumper Countach outside in daylight is a complete mystery to me. It`s not just an eyesore, they make the car look retarded. The one that came to school in the short bus. And thats not how a Countach should have to live. Like the village idiot with a gross deformity
ddavid122 (2 months ago)
I hate those fucking people. Not just in the exotic car industry but in every business transaction, when they go back on their word trying to screw you out of the money you earned once the job has been completed. It can really make your blood boil.

Honesty First (2 months ago)
Suing someone is not always about the money. It is the principle. Even though the money owed was roughly lest than $7K, you should have sued because he didn't think you would. Verbal contract is as solid as a written one. Not to mention the owner gave himself up in the text messages.
It’s too bad that the engine didn’t blow up catastrophically after the cheapskate bought it.
The paint on that car by the 25th anniversary emblem looks like it was applied with a paint roller.
Roy LaPorte (2 months ago)
yes, a contract is a must. can't trust anyone
constantin58 (2 months ago)
The seller was ok with $205k (text message) but ended up with $55k more and cheaped out for 2% less commission.

I would of said, so you're saying the deal's off. Deals off. Explains my mechanic friend that dude is trying to screw me.

Well, it would have been simple to just get a title on the agreed amount right before disclosing buyer and seller to each other.
Craig Schwegler (2 months ago)
In the end, it looks like Ed got him though. He was pissed enough to say ‘it was me!’ in the comments on this video. Very few people would have known who it was. He outed himself.
Bruce Lee (2 months ago)
This is a very rare type of man you come by these days, a stand up guy trying to make a legit deal and not screw anyone out of money. Makes sense why he wanted to get out of being a car salesman and left the business. I respect his honesty and can only hope this is the kind of fair deal we all get. 👍
Steven Sieja (2 months ago)
So you sold the lambo for 260k and split the 8% $20,800 commission with your mechanic. Should have been $31,200 split to $15,600. Lambo owner... SMH, but probably good confirmation to move on from being a broker.
Andrew Boccasino (2 months ago)
I’ve been in the market for a Lamborghini Countach for about a year now. I’m looking for a 1989 25th anniversary. It has to be white though. It has to be in exceptional condition, and it has to have less then 10,000 miles on it. It’s been extremely hard finding one with all the specifications I am looking. I’m waiting for the right car, and the right deal to present itself. If anyone owns one, and is interested in selling it or happens to know someone who owns one that is interested in selling it please let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

when your making calls here and there setting up buyers and sellers doing paperwork for 8 to 10% on 200K plus deals but still complain of not being paid enough thats when you know your a greedy lowballer I mean seriously making over 20K on one car even if it takes a few weeks or month to make it work is better then most people make in 1 year of actual hard work. I understand that getting things to work needs to be paid but really?? even if you guys lost 2500 to 3500$ each on the deal you still came out with a really good deal. Sorry I love the stories but this I dont agree with when I see people working their asses off ALL year to make ends meat and watching RICH people complaining about not getting RICHER over OTHER peoples cars for what is basically calling people and doing paperwork. I know that the hate comments I'll be getting will be from rich people not caring how they make their money but I see this stuff all the time around me and it makes people that do this stuff look like spoiled children complain about not being rich enough.

I just sold a gmc syclone...the first guy that "bought it" agreed on a price at my shop and told me to drive it to his house the next morning and he would have the cash waiting...so a 2 hour ride later the next morning i pull into a driveway to see the buyer and a friend with a creeper and other inspection items they look it over for an hour and the guy comes at me with a price 20 percent less than what we agreed on and said his wife wouldnt let him spend anymore...and i wrote in my ad that i didnt want to deal with anyone that is gonna use the my wife excuse....needless tosay the syclone went sideways over his lawn 4 tires spinning

“Classless decision of trying to renegotiate terms” Ed, that is the classiest way possible to describe such an act. I applaud you
Stevethe11th (2 months ago)
In the boat brokerage world there is so much legal paperwork so things like this don’t happen. Industry standard commission is 10% and most people are fine with that. Then some think they can do better on Craigslist and we have to convince them why they won’t do better or in very rare cases drop the commission to 8-9%. But this is always fixed before the boats are ever even listed.

This entire video should have been one second long with him sarcastically saying "Don't!".
SeanFromPVD (2 months ago)
I'd finish the deal and then after I got my money I'd tell the guy to lose my number. If he has another car to sell, fuck him, he can try Craigslist.
Tony Montana (2 months ago)
Greed is the biggest problem of humans. I'm not surprised the seller would try and shaft you on the commission. When the whiff of money starts to circulate and you add a woman's poison, this is what you get.

I sell exotics for a living and this happens more often than not. Always using the "Significant Other" as a scapegoat to back on earlier promises. One day you are buying a house the next day you are selling a house. That's the game and will always have its fair share of these people.
1776ERS (2 months ago)
If you made a honest mistake you honor what you originally said when you have dignity, respect & honor not to mention fair & have empathy. When you are a greedy, self centered person who’s word is worth less than a chewed piece of gum that’s stuck under a table then what he did to Ed seems sensible & fair.

What's your opinion on vice president of marketing at the largest Porsche dealer in the country, Shiraaz Sookralli and the missing money? Over the last year, he collected over $2.5 million in customer deposits for dozens of the company's ultra-exclusive 911 GT3 and GT3 RS models. There's only one problem: The cars never existed, the money is missing, and Sookralli just vanished without a trace.

I used to deal with the super rich as I did home tech support for their computers and home entertainment. They are notoriously cheap, notoriously bad about paying their bills and even worse about keeping promises. I hate to say this because I'm not into class warfare and I hope to be wealthy one day, but treating the little guy like shit because you can is low class.
